Trading Hours Club Daily 9:00am until late Courtesy Bus (See website for Western and Eastern timetables) Welcome all members and guest to another edition of the Port City Bowling Club’s “Pulse” magazine. Christmas has come and gone but Port City still has some great promotions and entertainment for you over the coming months. The Club’s annual Easter egg raffle will be held on 10th April, Good Friday. Tickets will be on sale on the day. Also back by popular request is the Cold Chisel/ Jimmy Barnes tribute show “Last Stand’ on the 24th April. The show was a great success last year so make sure you mark this on your calendar. As well as the weekly specials in Drift the chefs are putting their heads together to come up with some great meals to delight the mums on Mother’s Day. Watch the Club’s website and Facebook page for details as the day approaches. Plans to extend the Drift Café. Restaurant are well under way with an expected start date of June / July. This will extend the internal seating as well as create a deck for alfresco dining. On the bowls front the Pennant season starts in February / March for the Men and Ladies Clubs. For those members and guests who would like to experience bowls on a more casual basis the Club is offering $20 family barefoot bowls from 4:00pm every afternoon. Also the Club’s biannual “Jack Attack” corporate bowls event starts on Friday 6th March. Get a work team together, come down and enjoy Friday nights on the greens, have some fun against other business houses, enjoy some finger food and prizes after the game. Contact the Club to book in your team. Its only $75 for a 5 week competition with all proceeds going to the Club’s Drought Relief appeal. Our Drought Relief appeal has been taking donations of non- perishable food and new clothing etc. for 3 months. So far the Club has made two trips to our sister Club, Quirindi Bowling Club delivering 4 -5 pallets of food and water. Quirindi’s Rotary Club have also been providing their services helping to deliver the goods to those in need in the local community. The recent rain has helped the area but it will be some time before many of the farmers and residents get back on their feet. Thank you to all those members and guests who have donated. This is my last CEO’s message for “Pulse” as I will be leaving the Club on 17th February. I take this opportunity to thank the Board members, management team and staff for all their assistance over the last 7 years and wish the Club all the best in its future endeavours.

Trio Seafood & Saffron Spaghetti Serves 2-4 people
Ingredients:
• 200g spaghetti • 2 tbsp olive oil • 2 garlic gloves
• 100g prawns • 100g scallops • 100g mussels
• 150ml white wine • Good pinch saffron (mixed with 3 tbsp hot water)
• 1 lemon (use for zest & juice) • 4 tbsp cream • Pinch of parsley
Method:
1. Bring a large pot of water to the boil and add a good pinch of salt. 2. Once the water is boiling, add the pasta and cook for two minutes less than it says on the packet. The pasta will be cooked again later when added to the sauce. 3. Meanwhile, heat oil in a med-large frying pan (you’ll need to use one with a lid). 4. Once hot, add garlic and sizzle for two minutes or until it is just starting to turn golden brown. 5. Push the cooked garlic to one side of the pan and increase the heat. Add the prawns and scallops and fry for one to two minutes or until prawns are pink and scallops are just turning golden. Take out of pan and set aside. 6. Add the mussels, white wine, saffron and three tbsp of hot water to the pan for two minutes. 7. Add the prawns and scallops back into the pan and combine with the mussels to create the base for your sauce. 8. Add the lemon zest, juice and cream into the pan and season with salt and pepper, depending on your taste. 9. Drain the pasta when ready or cooked to your liking. 10. Add the pasta into the pan and toss everything together. Place the lid back on the pan to reduce the sauce for a couple of minutes. 11. To top the dish off scatter with a pinch of parsley for colour and give it a final toss. Serve with parmesan. 5

BOWLS @ PORT CITY BOWLS NEWS Club Renovations:
Port City’s renovations are on schedule, the DA for the renovation of green No.1 and the smaller kid’s green has been approved by the Hastings Council. Construction on the new No.1 green will likely begin in the coming months before construction of Drift. The construction of the new No.1 green is scheduled to be completed before the Fire & Rescue Australasian titles begin in August.
Women’s Pennant: The 2020 Women’s Pennant season is shaping up nicely with four teams set to compete this year. With the success of our Grade 1 & Grade 4 teams last year making the state playoffs, we are confident that we can go one better and bring home a flag.
Fire & Rescue Australasian Titles 2020:
Men’s Pennants: The 2020 Men’s Pennants kick off on February 29th with a ten week competition. Members of the Women’s Bowling Club are now able to participate in this competition. We have had several Women’s Club bowler’s trialling for positions throughout the eight teams of pennants for the upcoming season. Our Grade 1 Men’s Team once again have a young team competing with several experienced players amongst them again this year. After narrowly missing out on last year’s playoffs, we are hoping that all grades can improve their positions for this year’s pennants and bring home a state flag.
Port City is very excited to hold the Australasian Titles starting from the end of August till early September with over 200 men & women competing in the singles, pairs & fours competitions. This year we are lucky to have the Australian ranked No. 1 & 2 Women’s Bowlers competing in the event. The Australasian Titles are an exciting competition for the Club to hold. Teams are entering from all over the country and New Zealand for a week of bowls in Port Macquarie and we look forward to holding this great competition.

Port City’s First Australian Representatives: Max Glasse & Chris Thornton the Director have been selected to play for Australia v New Zealand in the upcoming Trans-Tasman series in the B2 Blind Bowlers here at Port City in May. After Max winning the state title late last year, he has gone one better to representing his country for the first time.

OUR NEW FINANCE MANAGER CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND WHERE YOU’RE FROM? I’ve recently relocated to Port Macquarie from sunny warm Armidale where I was born and bred. I’ve brought with me my long term girlfriend and our two dogs. I’m into all things sport and looking forward to spending plenty of time at the beach and fishing in the rivers. CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND? WHAT INTERESTED YOU ABOUT ACCOUNTING? I completed a bachelor of business at UNE where I majored in accounting. I have spent the last few years working at a large regional accounting firm and before that the Bowling Club in Armidale where I started washing dishes at 16 and worked my way up. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do and I thought that a business degree would cover my bases fairly well, I was always fascinated by the Club industry
and how no two days are the same. I got some good marks in the early accounting subjects and I then took an Undergraduate Accountant position. As the old saying goes there are only two certainties in life … death and taxes so I always thought I would be able to find a job. WHAT INTERESTED YOU IN A MOVE FROM ARMIDALE TO PORT MACQUARIE? As a kid and during my teenage years I have frequently visited Port and each time I liked it more. It just ticks all the boxes like the climate, beaches, restaurants, fishing and I have some friends that have already made the move over the mountain. WHAT HAVE YOU ENJOYED THE MOST SO FAR ABOUT PORT MACQUARIE AND THE CLUB? I’m really enjoying working at Port City so far, the staff have all been very supportive and friendly and of course the beaches tick all the boxes. 11

LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR DROUGHT RELIEF CAMPAIGN FROM OUR OPERATIONS MANAGER, GLEN. Can you give us a rundown of what Port City’s drought relief campaign is all about? The drought relief campaign was set up with the view to work with a sister Club to distribute non-perishable food items and new clothing (with tags). The sister Club would work and distribute the items to families on farms that are in need of the everyday essentials. We contacted a number of Clubs and aligned with Quirindi Bowling Club & local Rotary Club.

Why do you think it is important for Port City to do its part to help our farmers and all those affected by the drought? I think that the drought is an area that will probably never go away and someone will always be affected by it, this is the reason that Port City has made a commitment to help all year round. Part of the Club’s values is to support the community, not just locally but also in a broader sense. We believe that the drought will be an ongoing issue that will have a profound impact on people that live in country areas. With the ongoing generosity of our Club members and local community (including Willing & Able Foundation), Port City has made a commitment to provide continuous support. The effects of the drought, even when over, will be felt for some time as communities and families struggle to get back on their feet.
Do you have any goals set for the campaign? What would you hope to achieve? When you grow up in the areas that are drought affected, it’s hard not to feel for the farmers and their families, which is the reason that the Management & Directors of Port City wanted to try and help. I’ve seen firsthand what a tank of water can do to lift the morale of families and if we can put even a little smile on someone’s face, then we have achieved what we set out to do. The goal of the campaign is to provide support for the communities and families affected by the drought, not only during the drought but also assist these communities and families re-establish themselves after the drought. When is the next drop off scheduled for? What is the Club collecting and where can people donate?

The Club did their last drop on Saturday 8th February 2020. Our first drop was in early December 2019, which was very well received. Russell (CEO), Chris King (Chairman) and I took a day trip out to drop off a trailer loaded to the brim with items. A big thank you to Jamie Harrison who donated the trailer. Thanks to the generosity of our members and community, the last trip required the hire of a 3 tonne truck to take the goods out! We are asking our members and local community to keep donating so that we can manage a delivery every quarter. We are collecting non-perishable items like toiletries, tinned foods, water, coffee, or tea and pastas. If they would like to donate clothing, it must have the tag attached to it. Cash donations can also be made, which is used to purchase gift vouchers in local Quirindi stores before being distributed to those in need.
