SENIOR-HEAVY WARRIORS CONFIDENT THEY CAN MAKE A RUN Ryan Ray

Pontotoc’s football team is heading into year two under Baylor Dampeer with a sizable 22-senior class. “Going into year two is always different than, say, year one. In year one, you’re still trying to find your way schematically and learn the kids’ names, so going into year two is a completely different dynamic where those relationships with the kids and staff are built,” said Warrior Head Coach Baylor Dampeer. This Warrior squad has played a lot of games together, so expectations are higher this season amongst the players: to win a state championship. “This group has been playing well together for a long time, and they’ve been waiting their turn. They’d loved nothing more than to find a way to win the last game,” said Dampeer. Pontotoc took the first step last year after winning its first-ever 5A playoff game over Lanier before falling to powerhouse West Point in the second

round. A good chunk of last year’s players are returning, including senior quarterback Courtland Pass. Even more importantly, four of the five starting offensive linemen return to protect Pass and open holes for fellow senior Markavion Jones, who missed last year’s playoffs with an injury. Gage Luther leads the o-line group along with Jermarius Belim, Carson Farley, Kyren Ware, and Kaidyn Dandridge. Kyan Roberson and Llandon McGlowen will rotate with Jones in the backfield; Roberson will also line up out wide at receiver. 6’5 Walker Chrestman and speedy Tim Jones will

also headline the receiver group. Defensively, the Warriors return leading tackler Simon Butler, who had 101 total tackles last season. Keontae Griffis also returns in the secondary, along with Roberson and Tim Jones, who will also be factors in the secondary. Jaiden Strong will lead the defensive line group after a strong season last year. McGlowen will return at outside linebacker. At inside linebacker, Brice Blackmon and Rai Feazell will be looked at to replace leader Rylen Mounce, who graduated. Darius Knox and Tim Jones will be key pieces in the return game for the Warriors. Carter Vineyard returns after a successful sophomore year, where he went 30-31 in PATs and 6-6 in field goal attempts, with a long of 42 yards. “We think we got a chance to win every game as long as we are willing to do what it takes,” Dampeer said about his confident 2026 team. “Right now, we are focused on Amory and the excitement couldn’t be higher for this year.”

COUGARS TO FLIP THE SCRIPT IN 2026 Ryan Ray

For South Pontotoc football, the 2026 season is about playing for one another and eliminating last year’s self-inflicted wounds. New Head Coach Jonathan Beard is taking over his first high school program, but is prepared after being a head coach at the junior high level. “Being a junior high head coach prepped me for this adventure that I am on now,” said Beard about being the new Cougar head coach. “It’s been great so far, and the addition of Ty Priest has been phenomenal.” Priest takes over as defensive coordinator for the Cougars, bringing in passion and knowledge of the game. “Priest is a guy you definitely want on your staff,” said Beard. “Schematically, he understands the game and gives a different viewpoint of how he sees the game, and that has been different, but in a good way. He came in the spring and immediately got after it and got to know the kids and built those relationships.” After a disappointing 1-9 season in 2025, South Pontotoc is sticking to the foundation it started building last year. “We have that ‘No Man Left Behind” mentality this season, where we play for one another and lift each other,”

Beard said. “These guys understand their roles and try to make the guy next to them better. It’s just a continuation of what we did last year, just raising the standard for South Pontotoc football.” The Cougars return some key pieces, including seniors Kai Hidalgo and Brayden Patterson. Hidalgo finished with 1,192 all-purpose yards (710 rushing, 246 kick return) and 9 total touchdowns last year, and also had 50 total tackles and 3 interceptions on defense. Patterson led South with 84 tackles last season and will be looked upon to lead the defense. “He’s a hard-hitter,” said Beard about Patterson. “He heads up that front pretty well, and I’m proud of the leadership he has fallen into.” Hidalgo, Dylan Coleman, Estavion High, and Walker Wise will be key players in South’s secondary. Priest will keep the 3-4 scheme defensively and maintain a healthy rotation of inside and outside linebackers to go with Patterson. “Jaiden Bolton, Avery Moore, Carson Deaton, Jordan Golliday, and Kerion Jones will cycle in and out at linebacker, so we feel pretty confident in that group,” said Beard. Cameron Coxey, Landon Parrish, Jett Ward, Tim Baker, Channing Waldo, and Zayden Holley will be a part of a “committee” with defensive linemen. Senior Jaxon Highlander returns as the starting quarterback for the Cougars, who will stick with the triple-op-

tion offense, but with a twist. “It’s still the triple option, but we will go a little more from the gun this season,” Beard said. Dylan Coleman and “sure-handed” Walker Wise return to lead the wide receiver group. Patterson, Bolton, Golliday, Jacob Petty, and Isaac Sampson will rotate in the backfield. South returns most of the offensive line with guys like Waldo, Coxey, Ward, and Parrish headlining the group. “I think our roster is up to 45 this year compared to 32 last year,” Beard said about his growing program. “Some kids are coming in and progressing well, giving up some depth that we did not have last year.” The Cougars know they have to eliminate the self-inflicted wounds to flip the narrative about football at South Pontotoc. “I think a lot of turnovers happened [last season] because guys were trying to make extra effort plays, and I don’t fault them for that. I fault myself. I got to do a better job of creating awareness and understanding of when we two-hand the ball, we need to get out of bounds instead of going into four or five guys.” South Pontotoc’s 2026 football team is poised to turn its fortune around and bring that first-ever playoff win to Springville. “We got young guys, along with our older guys, who are hungry and getting excited about the future of Cougar football.”

VIKINGS STRIVING TO MAKE HISTORY DESPITE INEXPERIENCE Ryan Ray

The 2026 North Pontotoc Vikings are looking to make history in year one of the Matt Lindsey era. “A lot of people may not realize this. We have won a lot of ball games, but we have never won a 4A playoff game,” said longtime Viking and new Head Coach Matt Lindsey. “I just tell them guys, why not y’all? Why don’t y’all be the first group to win a 4A playoff game for North Pontotoc?” The Vikings know they have a challenging road ahead after last year’s graduating class that included threeyear starting quarterback Drew Winfun and four-year starting linebacker and 2025 leading tackler Luke Hale. The Vikings also lost leading receiver DeAnthony Slaughter and sure-fire tackler Levi Gooch. Despite losing some key pieces on both sides, the Vikings are retaining major pieces, starting with Aden Harden, who will play both ways at receiver and cornerback, and even see some snaps at safety. “Aden [Harden] is just an athlete, man,” said Lindsey, “Actually, going to move Aden safety this year to help replace Levi [Gooch], who was our strong safety last year.”

Lindsey will continue to call plays defensively and shuffle some pieces around to fill the holes left by graduation. Carson [Hale], Luke’s brother, will be part of a five-man rotation at middle linebacker with Easton Hill, Brooks Kentner, Jack Horton, and Crew Matthews. “Easton Hill played every snap at outside [linebacker]; he’s probably gonna inside because of the experience he has. I’ve got a three-way battle for the other inside spot. Brooks Kentner, Carson Hale, and Crew Matthews are battling for that position. After what I saw in the spring, I wouldn’t be afraid to put any of them out there.” Brody Howell will be leaned on to take Hill’s spot at outside linebacker. Tucker Harmon will replace Ladarius Adkins, who will be full-time at running back, on the other side. On the defensive line, the Vikings return senior Hunter McKissack and sophomore Carlos Zuniga. Senior Dylan Steele will see some playing time on the defensive line as well. This year’s North Pontotoc senior class consists of only six players, four of whom are on the offensive line. “We’re a senior-heavy offensive line group this year,” Lindsey said. “That’s why I am expecting big things from Ladarius [Adkins] in the running

game because we do have four of our five guys that are seniors on the offensive line.” 6’5 270-pound Dez Nelson and 6’6 290-pound Logan Tharp will lead the offensive line group this season, along with fellow seniors Dylan Steele and Christian Nava. Adkins, along with Hill and incoming speedy-freshman JJ Gambrel, gives the Vikings depth at running back. Trendon and Aden Harden will lead the receiver group, along with Robert Watson and Cayson Jensen, who will also see time at quarterback. The biggest question for the Vikings is who will replace Winfun at quarterback? “We have three kids who are taking reps [at quarterback]. We didn’t get to see Storm [Robinson] in the spring game because of an accident, but he was the backup last year and started for us in JV as a freshman. [Cayson] Jensen can play quarterback as well. He is a great runner. Then we have Nylan Green, an incoming freshman, who is battling for reps there.” “It’s not that these kids aren’t good; we know the talent is there. It’s just that they don’t have the experience. This will be a young team, so that’s why I am trying to get them as many reps as possible before we get into division play.”

WARRIOR BAND TO CONTINUE SUCCESS WITH RETURNING TALENT Ryan Ray

Head Band Director Sarah Todd is entering her 12th year as the head director for the Warrior band, 21st overall at Pontotoc, and is optimistic about this upcoming year despite losing two talented musicians in Max Todd (Ole Miss, trumpet) and Cori Bowens (Mississippi State, trombone). The Warriors are coming off a year where they received All-Superior ratings at marching evaluations in Tupelo, then placed sixth in Class 5A at last year’s MHSAA state band competition. Color guard placed third in Class 5A at the state competition as well. “We have two new drum majors this year, Zoe Holland and Cole Winter. Both have done a great job taking hold of that leadership position. Mallory Watson and Jude Hammer will be our soloists this year and are also section leaders for their section,” said Todd. Colorguard captains Aniylah Hooper, Anna Morgan McClantoc, Emma Stalnaker, and Faith Tzib will lead the color guard group this year. Tenor Kaitlyn Boydstun returns as the drum captain. “Kaitlyn Boydstun is going to be our drum captain again this year,” said Assistant Band Director Steven Strom. “She’s a really good student. She’s responsible, respectful, and willing to help the younger students and

take them under her wing. She’s just as good a leader as she is a player.” “Melany Hernandez and Janice Berry are the leaders of the front ensemble, and they do a great job at keeping kids on track and in line,” said Strom. The Warrior band’s show will be titled “Full Throttle” this year, depicting a Formula One race, which is the highest class of international single-seater, open-wheel racing. “We’ll have the sights and sounds that you would see at a Formula One race with some narration of the crew talking to the driver. The opening will be the F1 theme when it comes on TV, then transitions into “Ride” by Samuel Hazel, which is a pretty popular piece amongst the concert band world,” said Strom. “One goal we’ve had as a program the last three or four years is making sure

the shows we do are not just competitive,” said Todd. “We want them to be enjoyable and accessible to our home crowd, music that everybody can enjoy and not something people are going to wonder what it’s about.” PHS looks to develop leadership and depth of talent throughout the band, not just at the top. “I think our goals this year are to develop more leadership skills within the group as a whole. We also want to develop some depth as an ensemble. We have a lot of strong players, but the younger ones, who maybe haven’t contributed as much, we want them to really dig in and pull their weight so it’s not so topheavy.” The Warriors’ first competition will be on Saturday, September 26th at the Conquistador Classic in Olive Branch.

COUGAR BAND LOOKS TO BUILD OFF THIRD-PLACE FINISH Ryan Ray

South Pontotoc’s high school marching band will head into this fall with confidence after a 2025 campaign that saw them earn All-Superior ratings at the MHSAA State Marching Evaluations, then place third overall and in color guard in Class 4A at the state competition. This year, Band Director Barrett Gray keeps the goals and expectations the same. “Our primary goals are for the students to learn and grow musically, educationally, and socially,” said Gray. “We want the students to enjoy their time in band and feel proud of their performances and accomplishments. We want to perform our best and hope that our results reflect the hard work and dedication of our students.” The Cougar band will be led by drum major Jayee McMillen, but Gray says there are many students who help lead as well. “Jenna Britt, Kaida Key, Chris Gonzalez, Karson Pettit, Steven Cox, Sadie Luby, Brittney Peres, Ashley Vidana, Madison Black, Mackenzie Cheney, Jacob Hughes, Jaren Kelly, and Gabby Mault are all a part of our Student Leadership team and are a crucial element of the success of the band program,” Gray said. “They lead by example and work with their peers to ensure they learn

music, marching techniques, and other skills that will give them the best opportunity to grow, improve, and succeed.” This year’s show will be titled “If I Only Had A Heart,” but Gray says it is not a retelling of the classic Wizard of Oz story. “It uses some of the characters to tell a story of the search for humanity,” Gray said. “Audiences can expect to hear music from The Wizard of Oz, Elton John, and original works

by the arranging team. The music begins very rigid and mechanical, and as the show goes on, the mood lightens, and the music flows more, depicting the change from machine to human.” The Cougars will be able to perform part of their show in the first home football game against Bruce on August 28th, but their first competition will be on September 28th at the Conquistador Classic hosted by Olive Branch High School.

YOUNG VIKING BAND TO DEVELOP WHILE ALSO HAVING FUN Ryan Ray

The North Pontotoc marching band is entering its third year under Band Director Taylor Riley-Vergara and show no signs of slowing down as one of the most entertaining bands in Mississippi. Last year’s show was headlined by a rock and roll-themed performance that many spectators enjoyed not only for the music, but also for the performance of drum major Cheyenna Cable, who has since graduated. “We had 13 seniors graduate last year, and they were all incredibly strong,” said Riley-Vergara. “Cheyenna [Cable] was our drum major last year, and her influence still hangs around despite her graduating.” DJ Phillips and Iesha Bailey will fill the hole that Cable left at drum major. “Those two are very strong leaders for our band, and they’re going to develop into great drum majors.” Emma Sorrells, Mindy Carpenter, and Lorelai Westmoreland are the three color guard captains who have a little more responsibility during school hours. “They are incredibly strong and have a lot on their plate because during the school hours they have to work on the side independently with the rest of the color guard.” “This year’s show will be called “CTRL-ALT-DEL”, and we are telling

the story of a computer that is having technical problems. At some point, the computer is turned off and back on, and the problems are fixed. Some of the music that you might recognize, like our middle song, which is slower, more somber, is a rendition of Britney Spears’ “Toxic”. This year’s band features a substantial freshman class, so expectations are focused more on continual growth. “Our goals and expectations are to build an extensive community,” said Riley-Vergara. “We’ve got a very large freshman class this year, and we have

been fortunate to have really strong upperclassmen to bring them in and make them part of our family. Because we have so many young students we are paying attention to, and making sure that they understand how we operate. We like to have fun around here, and I personally like to challenge our students, especially the upperclassmen. I want to get them out of their shells and build confidence and grace. I think band is a really good way to practice that in a safe environment around your friends doing something fun.”

WARRIORS GOLF BRING BACK EXPERIENCED GROUP Jonathan Wise Sports Writer

The Pontotoc golf teams bring back a notable amount of experience as they hit the links to ultimately try to contend for a trip to the state tournament. “We have a pretty cool group where we have a bunch of seniors and a bunch of eighth and ninth graders,” said PHS boys coach Jon David Poss. “The older guys on our team have done it before. They’ve developed a maturity level over the years where they understand what it looks like on a day-to-day basis to compete, get better, and hold themselves accountable, but we have a bunch of new faces that as time goes on I think are going to turn out to be a really good group to coach and watch play.” The Warriors have six seniors in Elijah Farris, Thomas Jefcoat, Barrett Lewis, Reed Barbles, Sheff White and Jake Cooley. They will be joined by freshmen Carter Simmons and Myles Kennamore and eighth graders Westin Vineyard and Bowen Kidd. “We are challenging them to take it day by day and to compete against their teammates and against themselves from yesterday,” Poss said. “With any sport, but I think especially golf, you have to be able to take the good and the bad. In this sport some days just aren’t going to be your day. You have to be able to turn the page, learn from your mistakes, and get better. You also can’t hang onto your last shot, the next one is the most important one you are go-

ing to hit. If we can build patience and just hang in there, I think we are going to be fine.” The Lady Warriors’ roster has Marlee Rayburn, Juli Anne Beard, and transfer Blakelee Dollins.

“Two of them are returning, and their golf games have definitely gotten better year over year,” said girls coach Justin Jensen. “I think this is a group of girls that can definitely qualify for state and compete.”

COUGARS GOLF ADD TALENT, PUSHING FOR A BIG JUMP Jonathan Wise Sports Writer

The South Pontotoc golf teams have a good mix of experience and talented newcomers as they prepare for the upcoming season. “I think talent-wise we are probably in a better position than last year,” said Cougars coach Zach McDonald. “There was a lot more competition for our team when we had tryouts last spring. We have some new kids who have come out, some more athletes, who are going to help us. “ On the boys side, Logan Tutor, Rivers Donaldson, Wyatt Waldrop and Brady Murphree are all back and ready to take a step forward. Leah Fields and Blakelynn Brasher return for the girls. Cooper Brazil and Maddox Gleaves will provide a boost for the boys, along with Holden Patterson. The girls roster is filled with new players, including standouts in other sports like Choe Rice, Jaylee Beth

Flake, Haylee Phillips and McKenna Spears, as well as Acelyn Gleaves, Kylie Jenkins, and Callie Stuto. “I know a lot of them have been working hard on their own,” coach McDonald said. “A lot of the boys, especially, have played on the Coca-Cola tour this summer, and a bunch of the girls have been going to the range and working. That’s beneficial for us, so that when we get back into school we can go straight into the short game sessions and stuff we really need to improve on to make it

to the state championship. “We are just going to take it day by day. As we get into sessions with the players we will be able to realize where their biggest weaknesses are and figure out what is causing their scores to go up. After every match me and coach (Ethan) Donaldson will help identify things to get their scores down, but one thing we always emphasize is 100 yards and in. If we can improve on the little things, then we will be ready for the district championship.”

VETERAN VIKINGS WILL BE LEANED IN THIS SEASON Jonathan Wise Sports Writer

North Pontotoc golf has high expectations with two veteran teams this fall. “We have a lot of seniors for the boys that have been with me a long time,” said coach Trae Smith. “This is anywhere from year four to year five for them, and we added a senior this year that wanted to play- Greyson Lytal. With us not able to have an organized team practice until probably sometime in September, we are going to have to really lean on our experience. Our boys have been going and playing a good bit on their own.” The Vikings’ senior class is comprised of Hayden Hale, Easton Stark, Will Coomer, Aidan Taylor and Greyson Lytal. Sophomores Hudson Wise and Grady Bledsoe are talented players who will make an impact, while Brody Brown, Braxton Sutton and Pryce Sudduth round out the roster. Senior Mady Lindsey returns for the girls. Sophomores Leah Walker and Brooklyn Tutor begin their third year of play. “Mady came in and picked things up quickly, and Leah and Brooklyn have been playing since it’s eighth

grade,” coach Smith said. “They have done everything I’ve asked of them and improved every year.” New to the sport are Mary Erin Patterson, Emalyn Hill and Alya Bledsoe, but Smith likes what he has seen from them. “They have picked right up on it

and are doing great,” Smith said. “They are going up there on their own and playing as much as they can, and the girls (team) has been coming up there and working on putting and spending a lot of time on the range. I am expecting big things from both the boys and girls this year.”

WARRIORS’ TO CONTINUE KEEPING THE STANDARD FOR ’26 SEASON Kailee Randolph Sports Writer

The Pontotoc cross country program enters the 2026 season with high expectations after a successful 2025 campaign. Head coach Brian Morgan said the team’s focus hasn’t changed. “Our goal is the same as last year— to win the last meet,” Morgan said. The Lady Warriors return a strong core led by sophomore Zoely Romano, who placed sixth at the state meet last season, and senior Yani Morales, who enters her second cross country season after making significant strides over the past year. Morgan believes the duo, along with a talented freshman class and experienced returners, has what it takes to compete for another state title. “They know what it takes to be successful, and they’re dedicated runners,” Morgan said. “Summer runs have looked promising, and we’re looking forward to seeing this team continue to improve and compete like champions.” The boys team also returns a solid foundation, led by senior Noah Parmer, who finished 18th at the state meet last year, and sophomore Rhett Mitchell, who placed 22nd. Morgan said a talented group of freshmen will provide strong competition throughout the season, with several runners capable of earning spots in the team’s top seven. “Noah is a great leader and sets the

example for what it takes to be successful,” Morgan said. “The team has been putting in the miles this summer, and with the talent and leadership we have, we’re excited to see what this

group can accomplish.” With experienced leaders, promising young talent, and a championship mindset, the Warriors are aiming for another successful season.

The South Pontotoc cross country team enters the 2026 season with high expectations, returning nearly its entire boys’ roster while adding depth to a girls’ team looking to reclaim a state championship. After losing just one senior from last year’s boys’ squad, the Cougars return a roster of nearly 20 athletes. The girls’ team, which captured the

2023 MHSAA Class 4A State Championship, has also welcomed several new runners as it aims to return to the top. The boys will be led by senior standouts Traylen Bain and Karson Pettit as they look to build on last season’s success and continue strengthening the program. One of the biggest changes for South Pontotoc this season comes on the sidelines. Laci Bain takes over as head coach, joined by assistant coaches Allen Bain, legendary cross country

and track coach Mike Bain, and South Pontotoc alumni Macy Bain, who was a member of the school’s 2023 state championship team. “We’re looking for growth in the program,” Bain said. “The more athletes we can get interested, the more competitive we can be.” With experienced runners returning, new faces joining the roster and a new coaching staff in place, the Cougars are optimistic about building on their recent success and making another run toward the top this fall.

REEDER TO KEEP BUILDING VIKINGS CROSS COUNTRY Kailee Randolph Sports Writer

The North Pontotoc High School and Middle School cross country teams are set to begin the 2026 season with a talented mix of veteran leadership and promising young runners under first-year head coach and alumni Jack Reeder. Reeder ran cross country where he was 3A’s Daily Journal Male Runner of the Year in 2017 and a two-time 3A All-State Runner. Reeder also played baseball for North Pontotoc, even helping the Vikings win the Class 3A baseball state championship in 2019. “I’m super excited to get the opportunity to come back home and get the chance to coach the North Pontotoc cross country team,” said Reeder. “This year’s team has several talented runners that I’m excited to see compete, grow, and do big things this season.” The high school boys return eight runners, led by seniors Aiden Bates, Logan Wilder, Andrew Montgomery, Colton Lewis, Cailyn Ruth, and Landen Williams. Bates, Wilder, and Montgomery are expected to lead the way, while freshmen Julius Gambrel and Elliot McMillen are expected to make an immediate impact.

The Lady Vikings return 15 runners and will be led by seniors Kari Jaggers and Greenlee Anthony, along with Rubi Grisham, Mallory Spears, Ashley Montufar, and Fatima Lopez. At the middle school level, Addie Davis and Julius Gambrel return after earning All-State honors at the Middle School State Championships. Alana Spears and Myka Wise are also expected to be key contributors,

while newcomer Rylan Hester joins the boys’ team. Coach Reeder said the team’s goals remain simple. “Our overall goal this year hasn’t changed. Coach Lilly did an excellent job working with our runners, and we want to continue building on what she started. I want our runners to compete every time they race and work to get better every day.”

HAYLES CONFIDENT IN EXPERIENCED, VERSATILE LADY WARRIORS Jonathan Wise Sports Writer

The Pontotoc Lady Warriors have a team with a lot of potential, and head coach Jamie Hayles is excited about what she has seen. “This group has shown a great commitment to improving every day,” Hayles said. “When they have the opportunity to be in the gym, they’re there. Our players have embraced new roles, pushed each other in practice, and competed at a high level. We had a great time at team camp, where they gained valuable match experience and continued to build chemistry. I’m excited about the progress they’ve made and the direction we’re heading.” PHS brings back several returning starters, including senior Markarri Rucker, who is taking on a different role as an outside hitter this season, senior setter Tara Wilburn, junior middle blocker Star Williams, and senior Gracie Kuykendall, who will be playing libero. Other key parts of

the lineup and rotation include senior Meredith Farley, junior Amia Mabry, junior Kinsley Cruze, and junior McKenzie McDonald. “I believe our biggest strengths are our chemistry, competitiveness, and versatility,” coach Hayles said. “This team genuinely enjoys playing together, and they all want to win. We also have players who are willing to adapt to new roles for the benefit of the team, which gives us flexibility in different situations. If we continue to communicate well and play with con-

fidence, I think we have the potential to accomplish a lot. “Consistency starts with our daily habits, and our team will have to continue bringing energy and focus to every practice and every match, regardless of the opponent. Limiting unforced errors, serving aggressively, communicating well, and trusting one another will all be key to having a successful season. Our goal is to improve every day and be playing our best volleyball when the postseason arrives.”

HOMAN OPTIMISTIC ABOUT LADY COUGARS POTENTIAL WITH A NEW SEASON UNDERWAY Jonathan Wise Sports Writer

South Pontotoc Lady Cougars volleyball has gotten the season started, and head coach Vicki Homan is optimistic about the team’s potential after getting a few games under their belts. “We play together as a team that’s for sure,” said South head coach Vicki Homan. “That’s always important. We have got to get mentally stronger, but they see that too. That’s the main thing, that they see it and are trying to correct it.”

Key returners for South include McKenna Spears, Addy Vanlandingham, Jaylee Beth Flake and Molly Covington. “McKenna and Addy are our middles,” coach Homan said. “They do a good job following the ball trying to get blocks or get a hand on the ball. They also work great offensively. Jaylee Beth and Molly are our setters, and they are both stronger this year than last year, so that helps. They also try to come in and hit a little bit.” Other key parts of the rotation are junior Emma Walls and sophomore Eden Doss. Others will also see min-

utes, including, among others, Alannah Hughes and Brooke Schwalenberg. “Several of last year’s freshmen are stepping up and getting some playing time,” Homan said. “So I’m looking forward to seeing what they can do going forward.” “The keys for us are mainly going to be concentrating at practice, focusing in on where our mistakes are, and trying to cut them down,” Homan said. “We have to keep making better serves, just the things that we are continuously working on every day.”

FRAZIER TAKES OVER EXPERIENCED LADY VIKINGS Jonathan Wise Sports Writer

The North Pontotoc Lady Vikings had a solid season last fall. Since then, former player Kameron Frazier has taken over the program, and she has a clear vision of how she wants her squad to play. “I am trying to create a very go get ‘em team,” said Frazier. “I want them to play aggressive and have fun. Our motto has been, if you make a mistake, do it aggressively. “We have emphasized not being in our own heads. I have seen a lot of growth this summer. Especially on the mental side of the game, a lot of girls have stepped up. We are going to be a very young team, but a number of girls have stepped up into those varsity roles. I have been impressed with

the way they have played.” Seniors Kendall Villarreal and Evie Coker will be leaders on the court for North. Junior Kinsley Frazier, Charlize Williams, junior Sadie Rhea, and senior Greenlee Anthony will also be impact players, along with a couple of young players who have impressed in sophomore Liv Moore and freshman Elly Stewart. “I think one of our strengths is we have been able to handle pressure

better,” coach Frazier said. “That’s something we’ve worked on a lot in practice. This summer we didn’t let things fall apart and stayed under control. “Communication between our setters and hitters and playing as a team is going to be important, and we do a lot of things to build team connection. What’s going to help us is just continuing to play aggressively and playing smart.”

WARRIORS SWIM TEAM CONFIDENT IN THIS SEASONS CHANCES TO BRING HOME HARDWARE Kailee Randolph Sports Writer

The Pontotoc swim team enters the new season with high expectations after another strong year. The Warriors return a talented group of swimmers, including junior Ruth Ann Burton, who was a state champion in the 100-meter breaststroke in 2024 as a freshman and finished second as a sophomore. Callie Anne Patrick is the lone senior girl in this year’s group. Sophomore Reagan Rackley and junior Ali Larabee also return. Four strong seniors return on the boys side this season: Thomas Jefcoat, Carson Poynor, Jake Cooley, and Elijah Farris. Liam Rackley, Jett Pollard, and Cason Cruse are young swimmers who gained valuable experience last season and will hope to take the next step. The team is coming off a successful season that saw the boys finish third in Class 2 at the state championship. Poynor also returns after placing third in the state in the 100-yard butterfly. This season, the team has its sights set on finishing first in Class 2 at its meets, qualifying 80% of the team for North Half and competing for both

North Half and state championships. Head Coach Zach Gory said the team’s combination of talent, depth and culture gives Pontotoc a chance to compete at a high level. “This is probably one of our most talented teams,” Gory said. “More importantly, this is the best culture we’ve had leaving the summer in my six years as head coach.” Gory also credited the support of the Pontotoc community and parents for helping build what he described as a championship-level organization.

The program continues to emphasize its standards of “Do Right, Get Better, Have Fun,” while also introducing challenges designed to push swimmers throughout the season. With a strong returning group and championship aspirations, Pontotoc will look to turn its experience and talent into another successful season, bringing more trophies and medals back home. The Warriors open their season on August 22nd at the Oxford Invitational.
