Avelgem Container Terminal

Avelgem Container Terminal is strategically located on the river Scheldt. This container terminal for inland shipping serves as an extended gate for the ports of Rotterdam, Antwerp and Zeebrugge. It creates a link with South West Flanders, Wallonia and Northern France. The terminal covers an area of approximately 2 hectares and is used as an empty depot by a variety of shipping companies.

River Terminal Wielsbeke

Its strategic location along the river Leie makes River Terminal Wielsbeke an extended gate. It connects the ports of Antwerp, Rotterdam and Zeebrugge with the industrial cluster in Central and South West Flanders.

RTW spans 2 hectares and is a multi-purpose, open access terminal. All activities are available to all shippers. In response to the rapid growth in container traffic, River Terminal Wielsbeke underwent a comprehensive makeover in 2020. The terminal now features a 300 metre quay and a total area of approximately 41,000 square metres.

Delcatrans manages the container operations. With Shipit, the terminal has a second operator focusing on non-containerised freight, including building materials. Shipit uses innovative loading and unloading techniques such as a pallet ship and pallet shuttle barges.

River Terminal Roeselare

Following River Terminal Wielsbeke, POM West Flanders opened a second river terminal in West Flanders, known as River Terminal Roeselare. This terminal features a 230-metre quay and a platform for storage of 18,000 square metres. River Terminal Roeselare complements the Wielsbeke terminal (which mainly focuses on containers), aiming at transporting bulk and pallets, supporting the local cluster of companies active in building supplies. The Roeselare-Leie canal annually handles over 4 million tons of transported goods and raw materials.

At River Terminal Roeselare, even companies without direct access to waterways are now offered an excellent transport alternative to road-based transport. In June 2023, Transferium was appointed as the concession holder. The ambition is to develop this inland terminal into an important regional hub.

International Transport Centre

International Transport Centre Lauwe-Aalbeke-Rekkem, unlocks the Eurometropolis Kortrijk-Tournai-Lille. Railways and motorways connect the local industry with the seaports. Regional Transshipment Centre in Veurne and Diksmuide

Since mid-2023, the Westhoek region too boasts two quay walls, one in Veurne, located along the Lovaart, and the other in Diksmuide, situated on the banks of the river Yser near Heernisse. Both transshipment centres consist of a 325-square-metre quay platform with connecting lanes.

The Science Park Industry 4.0 in West Flanders is not comprised of a single building but of multiple facilities at various locations, each rooted in strong knowledge partnerships. Thanks to local investments in acquiring expertise and developing testing and research facilities, it provides a response to the challenges of the Machine Building & Mechatronics cluster.

Application Lab Smart Assembly & Production

The application lab investigates and demonstrates how to use innovative technologies to support operators in their tasks and how to reduce the cognitive and ergonomic load on operators. It’s aim: enable robots and people to work together safely and with an optimal task distribution.

Application Lab Smart Production Organisation

The Application Lab Smart Production Organisation helps companies to create a smart production organisation. They do this by applying simplified control methods and virtually validating design choices and optimisations.

Maaklab

Maaklab is operated by VIVES University of Applied Sciences. MaakLab is an inspiring workshop lab that focuses on co-creation, the development of technical competencies, and innovation. It provides a challenging learning environment, with a focus on training, crossover initiatives, innovative services, project guidance, prototyping, advice, and applied research.

Industrial Design Center

The Industrial Design Center is a living lab where companies and organisations can challenge experts at every step of the design process. They provide services from problem analysis to idea formation, from prototyping product concepts to user testing, from small-scale production to light measurements. Additionally, the IDC has expertise in Hybrid Prototyping and the use of Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality in the design process.

Innovation Lab: The Ultimate Machine

Innovation Lab The Ultimate Machine designs, controls, and validates machines under the influence of vibrations, faults, temperature fluctuations, and electromagnetic interference. The lab transforms machines, vehicles, and robots into autonomous or semi-autonomous "cyber-physical systems", integrated within the Industry 4.0 environment and within company networks. Machines are designed, optimised and tested for environmental factors. Structural analyses are performed through simulations with virtual sensors or prototypes.

Experts look at the interaction between the machine and the environment in which it operates. Performance, reliability, and functional safety are of paramount importance. This ”dependability" is supported by hardware and software techniques. They idea is that the modern machine is capable of self-detecting whether it is still functioning correctly and, if necessary, transitioning to reduced functionality, complete shutdown, or restart.

Innovation Lab: The Ultimate Factory

Innovation Lab includes a concept factory consisting of a number of self-organising plug-and-produce systems. These are machines that can be flexibly connected and disconnected within a broader production environment. The concept factory includes both established and new processes. It houses a small logistics system, distributed sensor and actuator systems, industrial controllers, a joining module, and communication modules. Innovative algorithms are applied to achieve maximum system performance in this connected environment. The concept factory aims to be a testbed for testing radically new innovations from Industry 4.0 in a simple way.

Technology Lab AR & VR

This technology lab focuses on the implementation of Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and game engine functionalities throughout the value chain in the manufacturing industry. Examples include using AR for internal communication, supporting operators during the production process and for remote support, as well as using VR to offer standardized training tailored to the employee without affecting the production line.

Infinity Lab

The Infinity Lab uses digital twins – virtual replicas of real (mecha)tronic products that constantly gather and analyse data, learn from it, and adapt. This makes products smarter, more efficient and more reliable throughout their entire lifecycle – from design and production to use and maintenance.

By connecting digital information from every stage of a product’s life, Infinity Lab pioneers straightthrough digitalisation. The lab combines the expertise of KU Leuven and VIVES University of Applied Sciences in simulation, sensors, data analytics, augmented reality and artificial intelligence.

Companies can explore these technologies or collaborate with Infinity Lab researchers to discover which digital solutions create the most value for their business.

Seeds of innovation: thriving research in West Flanders

”The presence of test and research facilities in West Flanders is without a doubt an advantage for companies doing business in the region and provides ample opportunities for innovation. As Paul Snauwaert, Senior Advisor Advanced Technology & Innovation at CNHi likes to say: “Every challenge is an opportunity. Fabricating highly automated agricultural machinery means constantly reinventing ourselves and optimising our machines to stay ahead of our competitors.”

In 1906, in a small West Flemish town, Leon Claeys founded a small family company in agricultural implements. Over the past 100 years, this small business has become the biggest branch of multinational CNH Industrial. CNH Industrial (CNHi) is a global

capital goods company that produces equipment and technology for the agriculture and construction sectors. Its Belgian branch specializes in agricultural machines. Zedelgem is CNHi’s biggest site worldwide: it employs 3,000 people and houses an extensive R&D department of 450 researchers and engineers. Always with a focus on agricultural machines, its extensive R&D department has led the way in innovation and automation in combine harvesters and roll balers.

”We started out as experts in mechanics”, says Senior Advisor Advanced Technology & Innovation Paul Snauwaert. “Then, electronics slowly became part of our machines as well, which resulted in our shift to Mechatronics. Think of gps systems,

sensors, AI, automation … all in the name of efficiency and productivity.” CHNi's flagship combine range harvester can harvest 100 tonnes of wheat an hour. This was a world record since 2014 until 2023, when the company launched its newest CR11, which boasts an additional capacity increase of 30%.

The company recently concluded a ten-year research project in collaboration with universities KU Leuven and UGent and research institution Flanders

Make. The end product, the new Twin Rotor Combine Harvester, won this year’s gold medal at the prestigious Agritechnica Innovation Awards. Senior Advisor Advanced Technology & Innovation Paul Snauwaert: ”We managed to increase the capacity of our harvester by 30%. It delivers higher throughputs, reduces grain loss and adds more automation options, crucial to the farms of the future. Another advantage is that a software-controlled automatic system eliminates any blockages, which would be time-consuming and even dangerous for farmers to take care of themselves.”

Zedelgem’s R&D department designed the new combine harvester with an eye on the future. Customers sought greater capacity to make up for a lack of skilled drivers. The wheat harvesting season is usually only two weeks long. It is also difficult to schedule, due to unpredictable weather conditions. That complicates hiring seasonal workers. The new design offers an increased harvesting capacity and maximum productivity. Clearing fields quickly protects the quality and ensures good conditions for the following year’s crop.

Research partnerships with institutions and universities have many advantages, says Snauwaert. ”Collaboration forms the basis for innovation. Especially in the long term, it is the best way to stay ahead of our competitors. We have already experienced a period of growth thanks to our research partnerships. Furthermore, outsourcing part of our research offers flexibility in dealing with market fluctuations. That way, we can guarantee job security for our employees.”

Even though CNHi Belgium exports 98% of its products, moving the branch abroad is not an option. Snauwaert: “Flanders offers a unique ecosystem for innovation. Mechatronics is a fast-evolving sector, and skilled employees are not always easy to find. Luckily, education in West Flanders is top of the line. Also, some university students conduct their master’s thesis or doctoral dissertation with us, or take part in internships over the summer. They get to know us and choose us as employer when they graduate. Another part of the beneficial ecosystem is the Flemish government. Through VLAIO (Flanders Innovation & Entrepreneurship), they offer state subsidies for innovation, which is an important support for our research.” Snauwaert is sure of himself when he says that industry players, academics and the Flemish government combined make for a powerful trio: “Our main competitors are located in Flanders as well.”

Plenty of opportunities remain, explains Snauwaert. Electrification and battery use, for example, are important next steps in the global shift away from fossil fuels. Food sourcing is also a fast-growing sector, especially now that population growth puts pressure on planetary boundaries. ”How to produce food sustainably while also remaining cost-efficient is an important topic on the agenda”, concludes Snauwaert.

West Flanders has a long history of promoting manufacturing and industrial technologies. Vintecc, a one-stop tech agency for smart products and production in an industrial environment, is piloting the sector into a new future by offering smart software solutions and state-ofthe-art AI technology. ”By optimising other companies’ products and processes, we promise more efficiency, more productivity and more profitability”, says Jochen Van Lysebettens, Business Development Consultant.

”West Flanders is our dream location because it is such an enterprising region. There is a strong culture of entrepreneurship. The surrounding area is home to a lot of companies, both small firms and large businesses, active in various sectors and innovative by nature. Just think of companies like Bekaert, Renson, Picanol, Barco, Stow. All these companies have successfully entered the international playing field, but their local ties in West Flanders keep them grounded.”

”Many companies around here want to accelerate their growth using technology”, explains Van Lysebettens. “But because they don’t always have the experience and know-how to do so, they turn to partners like us. Cooperation is crucial for growth, especially in the technological field. Vintecc tries to bridge the gap between history and creativity:

we help strong and established companies to become more futureproof. Many companies in West Flanders are already very good at what they do. By looking for technology partners and other types of cooperation, they aim to become even better. Such cross-fertilisation between in-house expertise and new technological know-how often leads to fireworks.”

”Besides cooperation, the high density of companies in West Flanders is also an asset, because it shortens the decision-making process. In many large, international companies, there is a strong hierarchy, and every decision is preceded by a long process of consultation and approval. Here, we manage to maintain flat organisational structures, with fewer levels of middle management. As a result, companies can make important or innovative decisions much more quickly. Such decisions are usually based on data and analyses, but sometimes simply on gut feeling, because a choice ‘feels right’. That freedom is priceless”, says Jochen Van Lysebettens.

”West Flanders is an authentic and unique investment location. On a global scale, we are in the perfect spot: right in the middle of the Amsterdam–Paris–Brussels triangle, where lots of transport routes come together. We are surrounded by a large number of high-level industrial companies and we can count on a large talent pool to recruit new employees. West Flanders represents a mix of tradition & innovation

West Flanders offers an enticing blend of tradition, innovation, and an entrepreneurial spirit that is deeply ingrained in our DNA. One of those companies with typical West Flemish business mindset is Deceuninck. Deceuninck produces PVC and aluminium window and door systems, with branches across five continents. It is the second largest global player in its industry.

”Deceuninck started out as a family business in BeverenRoeselare in 1937”, explains R&D Project Manager Wim Six. “In that regard, our location is fairly coincidental.” However, Deceuninck now reaps the benefits of being a part of the West Flanders industry. Highly skilled employees find their way to R&D departments, research institutions and universities, and research partnerships are perfectly common. Deceuninck, for example, collaborates with Circular Materials Center,

Centexbel, VKC, KU Leuven (campus Bruges) and UGent (campus Kortrijk). “Local ties with research institutions and neighbouring companies offer huge advantages for us, and for the province in general”, concludes Six. “Universities and research institutions tend to go further in their research than most companies. They are generally much more thorough than commercial R&D departments, thus garnering more knowledge and expertise on which companies can build.”

Implementing innovative techniques happens gradually at Deceuninck, step by step. Complex processes require training for employees. To that effect, Deceuninck opened its own VR centre. Operators take virtual training courses before they come near the machinery. “It is much safer that way, definitely worth the additional cost”, says Six.

”Innovation inherently breaks with tradition”, continues Global Operational Excellence Manager Tom Van Hoorebeke. “Some changes are required by law, such as traceability. Other innovations are beneficial to the company: reducing scrap material, faster ways to adjust machinery, implementing robotics to accurately position parts, quality control …”

”Machine learning, artificial intelligence and virtual reality steadily gain importance in the Machines & Mechatronics cluster, as they do in nearly every sector”,

states Van Hoorebeke. “Naturally, Deceuninck jumps on the bandwagon.” A second trend: the operating methods and accuracy of a lot of mechatronic systems have evolved greatly, thanks to increasingly powerful hardware and therefore more capable software.

According to Van Hoorebeke, the biggest challenge lies in AI-driven software. It requires a large amount of data input to train the software. However, in every challenge lies an opportunity. A lot of progress remains to be made. The same is true for sustainable practices and production processes, an important topic to Deceuninck and Flanders in general.

Van Hoorebeke concludes: ”Research and development is crucial in order to keep our competitive advantage, especially in the EU. Automation in production processes is a valuable and necessary investment. Not in order to replace people with machines, but rather to overcome the chronic shortage of skilled staff.”

We are winners

West Flanders is known across Belgium as a region of hard workers. Entrepreneurship is an inherent part of the region, with family-owned companies still at the cradle of regional growth. Not only are they an important source of employment, but they also underlie the quality of life and wellbeing of the region. While these small and medium-sized enterprises are the engine of West Flanders, however, the region also enjoys a favourable investment climate for companies large and small.

A major influence in this regard is the can-do mentality which is present both in the workforce and its surrounding infrastructure. The current labor market landscape

Following the growth in the cluster also the number of job opportunities is rapidly increasing. With an unemployment rate of barely 2.7% (the lowest of the entire country) the companies are investing in digital transformation to reduce low value-add personnel activities. By consequence the workforce is being upskilled and reskilled to cope with the new job content and digital environment.

Training labs and knowledge centers

Between 2020 and 2023 more than two million euro was invested into high-end training equipment for 38 competence development. This joint acquisition has been dispersed over numerous training locations throughout

the region. Worth mentioning is the Industry 4.0 competence training center of VDAB that is being realised in the heart of the region to reskill the unemployed and prepare them for a job in the local industry.

To upskill and reskill the current workforce, larger companies create their in-house training centers where for SME’s various training labs are operated by local training providers. For technical education of pupils, a brand new Technicum has been realised in Kortrijk.

Forging innovation: an attitude of excellence in West Flanders

One of those companies which invest in people as well as innovation, is 247TailorSteel. ”When we look for new locations, our number one rule is very simple: we go where the business is. West Flanders, in that regard, was the only choice we could really make.” For 247TailorSteel, that business consists of custom-cut metal plates, tubes and bent products. As Frank Gelen, COO, explains, that means the Dutch company has created a very wide playing field for itself: over 40,000 customers make use of their services.

”In order to create the best service, is our goal to locate our factories 2-hour drive of our customers. In that way, we try to create a sort of pearl chain which will allow us to reach as big of a market as possible. Thanks to our

new location in Roeselare, we’ll be able to reach not only most of Flanders, but also an important part of the north of France, allowing us to further develop our business over there. After our first location, in the Netherlands, and the following three in Germany, we were ready to break into a new market. ”West Flanders might just be the Valhalla of sheet metal processing”, adds Guy Van Leeuwen, Plant Manager at the new 247TailorSteel location. ”It houses an impressive amount of steel sheet processing facilities.
