match report

Meg Hornby’s early free-kick was enough for Pompey Women to beat Sheffield United at Fratton Park and record a first WSL2 victory of the season.

After an even opening to proceedings, the hosts enjoyed a spell of sustained pressure that they were unable to turn into a meaningful chance.

But they managed to take the lead on 10 minutes when a 25-yard free-kick from HORNBY looped over Charlotte Parker-Smith and bounced in off the underside of the bar.

Pompey were looking threatening on the break, while their opponents were more content to patiently build.

Most of the Blades’ opportunities to level came from set-pieces, however, and a number of corners were well dealt with by Gray.

One of them was taken by Abbie Lafayette and diverted towards the target by Jess Reavill, with the keeper getting low to her right to make a smart save.

Andrews had an opportunity on 39 minutes after going down under pressure from Izzy Collins in the box, with referee Phoebe Cross pointing to the spot.

But the striker’s penalty struck the post and although she tucked away the rebound, it was disallowed as nobody else had got a touch on the ball.

United then thought they had levelled in stoppage time when Reavill’s header was turned against the underside of the bar by Gray.

The ball bounced back down and the visitors believed it had crossed the line, but Cross disagreed with them.

Pompey had a great chance to double their lead on 54 minutes after Hornby bundled her way past a couple of challenges and cut the ball back, but Ava Rowbotham’s snatched shot flew over.

Hornby then launched an attack before laying the ball off for Jones to flash a dangerous delivery across the face of goal.

The Blues were looking much more assured and seeing plenty of possession, with Collins sending an attempt narrowly wide.

But they had a let off on 65 minutes when substitute Lauren Thomas was sent racing clear, only to drag her effort just past the post.

The action soon switched back down the other end and after linking up neatly with Jones, a shot from Tia Primmer was blocked.

Both sides looked capable of adding to the scoring as the final whistle drew closer, while the Blades were forced to change their keeper after Parker-Smith was hurt in a collision.

United went close to a late leveller on 88 minutes when Devlin crossed from the right and Tammi George flung herself towards the ball, but could not quite make a connection.

And a stoppage-time strike from Devlin was then turned around the post by Gray, with the resulting corner dealt with.

But Pompey almost wrapped things up with a breakaway goal at the end, with Dahou’s long-range strike fumbled over by replacement stopper Izzy Pendlebury.
