Driven to Serve Youth, Family, Community
With roots tracing back more than 150 years, Youth and Family Outreach is built on compassion and driven to meet the needs of Portland’s children and families. Today, we are focused on early childhood education. We consciously prioritize homeless, teen and immigrant parents to provide them with quality care that sets a strong foundation for future success in school, work, and life. These early, vulnerable years are a time of such promise and possibility. By exposing young people to high
quality environments and diverse, caring relationships, we can bolster their brain wiring and social emotional development that sets them afoot on the path out of poverty. In Portland, the waitlists for early childcare are hundreds long. And the cost for many families, especially those who are already struggling to make ends meet, is prohibitive. At Youth and Family Outreach, we give 60 children the gift of a strong start.

The future for not only our youth but the betterment of our community begins in the early formative years as we set the stage for reading comprehension, vocabulary and crucial social-emotional development. Staff meet training requirements for universal design, social emotional development, trauma informed practice, assessment tracking, and more. We are not only state licensed but accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and a level 4 on Maine’s Quality Rating and Improvement System – the highest rating possible. Quality at YFO is not negotiable.
Rooted in Bayside Our location in the heart of Portland’s Bayside neighborhood allows for invaluable enrichment. We are within walking distance to the Portland Public Library, farmers market, Children’s Museum, Portland Museum of Art, Merrill Auditorium, Portland’s working waterfront, and more. Our community is truly an extension of our classroom. Moreover, our location is key to ensuring accessibility to families that are displaced or underserved, many of whom rely on public transportation or come here by foot. West Bayside has almost twice as many foreign born residents as other Portland neighborhoods. Furthermore we have a higher concentration of households living in poverty, with all adults working, compared to the rest of Portland. Our immediate community is families who are employed or in school. It’s imperative that they have consistent and high quality environments for their children.

Teaching and Feeding the Whole Child Hungry children can’t focus and learn. Maine ranks 1st in New England, and 18th in the nation, for child food insecurity (Educate Maine, 2016). YFO has a nationally-recognized child nutrition program where all students eat a healthy familystyle breakfast, lunch, and snack with their classmates and teachers. Our nutrition program is mindful of our community’s resources, set in sound nutrition, uses only whole ingredients and is good to our planet. A collaboration with Cooking Matters extends nutritional support to families through evening classes, teaching nutrition and low-cost meal planning.
Wrap-Around Services through Partnerships At YFO we know that a family needs to feel supported, be well fed, and have access to resources in order to be successful. Families living in poverty have more barriers to achieve that success and are more likely to experience toxic stress and trauma. To serve the needs of the whole family, YFO engages in strategic partnerships to provide much needed services to children and families. Partners provide an on-site social worker, workshops for families and children in nutrition, music, parenting, language and literacy support, training for staff, and much more. At YFO, our families get more than early education for their children, they get comprehensive support from our partners, and an ally in parenthood.

What makes YFO unique is the people. We are of and for our community and both our student population and our teachers reflect that. YFO embraces the positive contributions to our lives and community that comes from experiencing people of different backgrounds.
Our Community

8 of the 16 YFO teachers incorporate language other than English from their home country as a means to communicate with students and families who are nonEnglish speakers, as well as enhance the center’s educational programming.
Strengthening Our Workforce Relationships are key for our youngest learners. Hiring, retaining, and advancing the careers of quality early childhood educators is a priority at YFO. With support from YFO and the Department of Labor we have four staff members working toward their degree. In this way we not only set an example for our students, but we support the economic and workforce development that our community needs, addressing wage gaps for women and people of color.

As the Need Grows, So Will We Maine is in the midst of a childcare crisis. 68.5% of Maine children under age 6 live in households with all parents working, but the average cost of care for one infant is 92.6% of the cost of tuition and fees at a 4-year Maine college. While the need for childcare grows, the number of licensed family childcare facilities has dropped 37% in the last 10 years. In addition, fewer and fewer childcare centers participate in the Child Care Subsidy Program. Investing in quality early care and education so that it is accessible and affordable for all families in Maine is essential to a healthy economy (Maine Public Digital, https://projects.mainepublic. org/child-care-deep-dive).

To address the enormous need for expanded quality early care and family support, YFO has purchased the adjacent property (formerly Maria’s Restaurant) and embarked on an ambitious plan to double our full-year student enrollment. Our Building a Brighter Future Campaign will fund the design and building of a new structure on the newly acquired property, renovate our existing facility, create innovative green outdoor learning space, and expand programming to serve 110 students and their families.
