We elevate aquatics in the Richmond region, making water safety and aquatic fitness more accessible to all. Without intervention, drowning will remain the second leading cause of accidental death and we will miss the opportunity to create equity and save lives.

...SAVE LIVES Half the population does not know how to swim. Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death among children age 14 and under; and is the leading cause of death of children with autism spectrum disorder. With SwimRVA’s water safety and learn-to-swim programs, we’re changing the Richmond region’s relationship with water. Currently serving 24 elementary schools and more than 2,000 children annually, SwimRVA’s Learn-to-Swim program introduces second graders to water safety. We are growing to as many as 35 schools over the next four years as we expand to serve eastern Henrico in addition to growth in Chesterfield, Hanover, Colonial Heights and Hopewell through this monumental effort to drownproof the Richmond region.

...EMPOWER TOMORROW’S WORKFORCE Nationally, there is already a critical shortage of trained lifeguards. Keeping a pool safe is a fixed cost as necessary as electricity. Without life safety, we will not be able to keep our community healthy, active, safe and connected through aquatics. This campaign will create opportunity for youth from all backgrounds to enter the workforce with skills that will lead them to a livable wage. SwimRVA has partnered with Chesterfield and Henrico Counties to develop a groundbreaking workforce development program that takes high school students from little swim ability to certified lifeguards. This unique program not only multiplies the effect of water safety but also offering a clear entryway into countless opportunities in the recreation industry and beyond. The program is on track to receive a Career and Technical Education accreditation making it a credit bearing elective option for any school in Virginia. The pilot schoools represent districts of Chesterfield, Henrico, and one independent school in Church Hill.
...BUILD CHARACTER Building competence in swimming builds confidence in character and discipline, empowering youth for life. SwimRVA is providing year-round, weekly swimming lessons to children in Church Hill through a new collaboration with Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club, Anna Julia Cooper School, and Peter Paul Development Center. SwimRVA will serve over 800 children with self-esteem generating swimming lessons weekly.
