THOUGHTS FROM SENATOR MITCHELL Thank you for your generous support of the Mitchell Institute. Last year, this organization distributed nearly $1 million in scholarships to more than 500 students throughout the state of Maine. Since the inception of the Mitchell Scholarship, more than 2,700 students have received nearly $14 million in assistance. These impressive numbers would not be possible without you, and these dollars have made it possible for so many deserving Mainers to pursue a college education. We all want Maine students to fulfill their potential, and to close the gap between what is possible and what is attainable. I firmly believe that the best and most effective way to do this is by encouraging these young people through their secondary educations and beyond. This starts with addressing these students’ financial needs, and not just through the scholarship dollars mentioned above. We have found that the support that Mitchell Scholars need is notand cannot bemet by providing a check alone. Instead, the Mitchell Institute offers “more than a scholarship,” a suite of programs and additional resources to help students achieve success. This includes addressing financial needs by providing Fellowship Awards, so that students can pursue unpaid or underpaid internships or career-related exams. We head off financial emergencies through the Promise Fund, so that an unforeseen expense will not derail a student’s college persistence. We prioritize personal, professional, and leadership development, so that Mitchell Scholars and Alumni can become what they have all the talent and ability to bethe future leaders of Maine. Finally, the part of the Mitchell Institute that expands most beyond the scholarship is the dedicated and ever-growing community of Scholars, Alumni, and supporters like you. This Mitchell Institute Family has roots in every single community in Maine, and will continue to provide the necessary leg up to Scholars and Alumni to achieve great things. This community would not be possible without you. On behalf of these motivated and talented young people, thank you for your support.
Mitchell Scholarship The mission of the Mitchell Institute is to increase the likelihood that young people from every community in Maine will aspire to, pursue, and achieve a college education. The Institute awards a $9,500 scholarship each year to one graduating senior from every public high school in Maine as they join the college community. Mitchell Scholars are selected on the basis of financial need, community impact, and academic potential. Mitchell Scholars represent the best of their respective communities, and many cite the scholarship as helping them reach subsequent success. Truly helping our Scholars succeed, however, requires more than a Scholarship. As you’ll see on the following pages, once Scholars are selected, the Mitchell Institute helps them achieve a college degree and find success in the world beyond with a wide range of personal and professional support programs. And our approach has proven effective: 85% of Mitchell Scholars graduate from college within six years, as opposed to the national average six-year graduation rate of 55%. Our Scholars go on to be gainfully employed in a field related to their interests and studies, and many of them choose to stay in Maine – or leave for a time and return.

The Mitchell Institute has helped me in many ways, from financial benefits, to wonderful experiences and memories at the MILE events. However, the greatest gift that the Mitchell Institute has given me is the feeling of belonging in college; when everything was new and scary in college I knew I had the Mitchell family and fellow Scholars to lean back on. The sense that you always have someone behind you to help if you ever stumble along life’s path is priceless; the money and experience that the Mitchell Institute gives you is amazing, but any Scholar will tell you that what we are is a family and that is worth everything.

I’m only a first year, but in my short time here at Bowdoin College, the Mitchell Institute has already presented a handful of wonderful opportunities. Discussing current events over breakfast with Senator George J. Mitchell and other scholarship recipients was an incredible experience. I’m very honored and grateful to be a Mitchell Scholar!

Welcome Brunch A long-standing tradition at the Mitchell Institute, new Scholars are welcomed into the Mitchell Institute Family each August at a brunch in Orono. In 2017, over 300 Scholars and their families attended, and heard directly from Senator Mitchell about why he started the Mitchell Institute. Mitchell Scholars (and brothers) Elliott and Bentley Simpson also shared their advice for transitioning from high school to college, and the value of leaning on the Mitchell Institute Family for support and guidance. For many, the brunch is the first opportunity to learn about the path they are beginning as Mitchell Scholars.
Promise Fund Our research has shown that small financial emergencies can present an enormous roadblock to graduation. Promise grants are made to Mitchell Scholars who have experienced unusual financial setbacks that are hindering their college experience and in some cases their ability to persist through to graduation. Support is issued on a case-by-case basis and usually requires a meeting with a Mitchell Institute staff member to gain a holistic personal, academic, and financial understanding of the situation.

MILE I Mitchell Institute Leadership Experience An important aspect of being a Mitchell Scholar is becoming part of a supportive community. As busy college students, Mitchell Scholars don’t always have a chance to step away, reflect on their role in the world, and interact with people outside their college communities. In response, the Mitchell Institute developed a weekend-long leadership and professional development event. MILE I takes place in Millinocket and in 2017 brought together 50 Mitchell Scholars from different colleges all over Maine and the Northeast. This intimate experiential learning program includes guided outdoor exploration activities and a group community service project. Throughout MILE weekend, individual and group leadership, team building, lively group dialogue around decisions, and awareness of the views of others all become vitally important – be it canoeing down a river, reaching the summit of Mt. Katahdin, or at a dinner table discussing professional ethics. We know that programs like this help build strong connections within the Mitchell Institute Family, and 69% of Mitchell Scholars say our programming has made a difference to their network and connections. Since 2007, MILE has been fully funded by a single donor – Unum. We are deeply grateful to Unum and its leadership for assisting us in this important program.

MILE II Career Development Day LEVERAGING RESOURCES A constant refrain in our annual Scholar survey is “How do I find an internship?� To answer those kinds of questions, every March, the Mitchell Institute Alumni Council organizes the Mitchell Institute Leadership Experience II (MILE II), generously hosted by Unum. This daylong professional development opportunity brings Mitchell Scholars and Alumni together with business and community leaders from across Maine. Interactive sessions cover topics like expanding your network, deciding on career paths, and learning about professional opportunities in Maine.

Fellowship Awards Not every Mitchell Scholar will follow the same path to their post-college life. But many of them need a little financial support to gain the experience and skills they will need. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, the Mitchell Institute is able to provide stipends to Scholars to pursue unpaid internships, take test preparation classes, travel abroad, and more. In return for receiving these fellowships, Scholars commit to completing a community service project. In 2017, we awarded more than $80,000 to nearly 100 Mitchell Scholars and Alumni.

As a biochemistry and pre-pharmacy major at UNE, the Mitchell Scholarship has been a fundamental part of my college experience. I have attended nearly every event the Mitchell Institute has hosted, each time establishing more connections than the last. From white water kayaking to breakfast with Senator George Mitchell, these events have given me confidence and facilitated friendships with ambitious Scholars from all parts of Maine. I will be attending graduate school this fall, which was made possible in part by the Mitchell Institute. Kim Gustafson, the Scholarship Director, kindly wrote me a letter of recommendation. The Mitchell Fellowship helped me financially with application and exam fees. It is through these efforts I am advancing closer to my career goal of becoming a pharmacist and practicing in the state of Maine.
