It took more than 12 years to do it, but during my service in the United States Senate I visited every high school in Maine. It was a life-changing experience to meet and talk with thousands of students. As I looked into their eyes and listened to their voices, I was reminded of myself at their age: insecure, uncertain, lacking in purpose, direction or resources. Over and over again I was moved to recall how lucky I had been to have received the many helping hands that enabled me to go to college, and beyond. On the long drives to and from Fort Kent, Lubec, Kittery, Dover-Foxcroft, Rumford— indeed to all of the 140 schools—I thought of little other than what I could do to help them have the same chance in life that I had. By the time I left the Senate I had decided to devote myself to that goal and I established what is now the Mitchell Institute. This year we celebrate our 25th anniversary. I’m pleased and proud to report that we have provided $17 million in direct financial assistance to 3,011 Maine students. All were deserving. All needed help. Many were the first ever in their families to go to college. Although the choice is theirs, a majority of them attend and graduate from Maine colleges and universities and most of them remain in Maine. They are at work today, helping to build stronger and better communities all across our state, as doctors, teachers, business men and women, nurses, writers, entrepreneurs, artists, engineers. We found early on that the support our Scholars need is not, and cannot be, met by a check alone. So we offer more than a scholarship, a suite of programs and additional resources to help students to reach their full potential. These include meeting extraordinary financial needs by providing Fellowship Awards to enable students to pursue internship or career-related exams. We head off other financial emergencies through the Promise Fund, to prevent an emergency expense from derailing a student’s college career. We prioritize personal, professional, and leadership development so our Scholars can use their full talent and abilities to become the future leaders of Maine. The part of the Mitchell Institute that expands most beyond the scholarships is the dedicated and ever-growing community of Scholars, Alumni, and supporters like you. We will continue to provide the necessary leg up our Scholars need to help our communities to thrive. But none of this would be possible without your help and support. THE MISSION OF THE MITCHELL INSTITUTE is to increase the likelihood that young people from every community in Maine will aspire to, pursue, and achieve a college education.
The Institute awards a $10,000 college scholarship to one graduating senior from every public high school in Maine each year. Mitchell Scholars are selected on the basis of financial need, community impact, and academic potential. Mitchell Scholars represent the best of their respective communities, and many cite the scholarship as helping them reach subsequent success. Truly helping our Scholars succeed, however, requires more than a Scholarship. As you’ll see on the following pages, once Scholars are selected, the Mitchell Institute helps them achieve a college degree and find success in the world beyond with a wide range of personal and professional support programs. And our approach has proven effective: 85% of Mitchell Scholars graduate from college within six years, as opposed to the national average six-year graduation rate of 58%. Our Scholars go on to be gainfully employed in a field related to their interests and studies, and many of them choose to stay in Maine – or leave for a time and return. In 2019 and into 2020, Scholars face more challenges than ever before. Whether they need to weather the financial fallout from the COVID-19 crisis or navigate new online resources for their college, we are checking in with them consistently to ensure they have the supports they need. Fittingly, thanks to your ongoing support, this is the Institute’s 25th year of awarding scholarships to help deserving Maine students succeed. Though much has changed in 25 years, the mission and work of the Mitchell Institute is as focused as ever.

In his first year, Osage went to as many Mitchell Institute events as he could, out of a desire to connect with other Mitchell Scholars as well as staff. “I am blown away by how caring every Mitchell Institute employee is. They go out of their way to help every chance they can.” A first-generation college student, he is excited to take advantage of more Mitchell Institute programming throughout his college career.

Promise
Fund
Our research has shown that even small financial emergencies can present an enormous roadblock to graduation. Promise grants are made to Mitchell Scholars who have experienced unexpected financial setbacks that are hindering their ability to persist towards college graduation. Support is issued on a case-by-case basis and usually requires a conversation with a Mitchell Institute staff member to gain a holistic personal, academic, and financial understanding of the situation. More than half of Mitchell Scholars come from families making less than $50,000 a year, which means that they do not have the financial flexibility to deal with unexpected turmoil, much less the enormous and broad-reaching challenges posed by the COVID-19 crisis. When college campuses started to shut down this spring, we were deeply worried about the consequences for Mitchell Scholars–those who rely on part-time jobs to pay their bills, those who did not have the resources to return home when dorms closed, and those who may have no home to which they could return. In response to the challenges they were facing, staff provided Mitchell Scholars with both emotional and financial support. Some Scholars just needed a listening ear or an advocate to help them secure external resources. To others we provided grants to make up for lost wages, housing, car repairs, and more. Thanks to a grant from Machias Savings Bank, we were also able to send grocery store gift cards to Mitchell Scholars to help them adjust to the closure of dining halls or sudden loss of income. Ultimately, our goal is that no financial emergency would force a student to drop out of college. We had already started the Promise Fund several years ago to help Mitchell Scholars overcome financial emergencies and stay on the path towards graduation. It quickly became clear that the Promise Fund would be needed in a big way to help Mitchell Scholars overcome the COVID-19 crisis.

Welcome
Brunch A long-standing tradition at the Mitchell Institute, new Scholars are welcomed into the Mitchell Institute Family each August at a brunch in Orono. In 2019, about 300 Scholars and their family members attended, and heard directly from Senator Mitchell about why he started the Mitchell Institute. Mitchell Scholars Kylie Dunphy and Tristan Alley also shared their advice for transitioning from high school to college, and the value of leaning on the Mitchell Institute Family for support and guidance. For many, the Brunch is the first opportunity to learn about the path they are beginning as Mitchell Scholars.

Not every Mitchell Scholar will follow the same path to their post-college life. But many of them need a little financial support to gain the experience and skills they will need. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, the Mitchell Institute is able to provide stipends to Scholars to pursue unpaid internships, take test preparation classes, travel abroad, and more. In return for receiving these fellowships, Scholars commit to completing a community service project. In 2019, we awarded more than $100,000 to 104 Mitchell Scholars and Alumni.

When Hope applied for a fellowship from the Mitchell Institute to help cover study abroad costs, she didn’t realize how life changing the experience would be. She lived with the Maasai in Kenya for several weeks, which allowed her to develop personally and gain new perspectives of another culture. “I now want to help preserve and protect cultures like theirs while focusing on environmental impacts on their daily lives.”

MILE I An important aspect of being a Mitchell Scholar is becoming part of a supportive community. As busy college students, Mitchell Scholars don’t always have a chance to step away, reflect on their role in the world, and interact with people outside their college community. In response, the Mitchell Institute developed a weekend-long leadership and professional development event. MILE I takes place in Millinocket and in 2019 brought together 60 Mitchell Scholars from different colleges all over Maine and the Northeast. This intimate experiential learning program includes guided outdoor exploration activities and a group community service project. Throughout MILE weekend, individual and group leadership, team building, lively group dialogue around decisions, and awareness of the views of others all become vitally important – be it rafting down the Penobscot, reaching the summit of Mt. Katahdin, or at a dinner table discussing professional ethics. We know that programs like this help build confidence, and 52% of Mitchell Scholars say our programming has made a major difference to their willingness to pursue new opportunities. Since 2007, MILE has been fully funded by a single donor — Unum. We are deeply grateful to Unum and its leadership for assisting us in this important program.

She says some of her closest friends at Bowdoin are Mitchell Scholars.

LEVERAGING RESOURCES A constant refrain in our annual Scholar survey is “How do I find an internship?� To answer those kinds of questions, every March, the Mitchell Institute Alumni Council organizes the Mitchell Institute Leadership Experience II (MILE II), generously hosted by Unum. This daylong professional development opportunity brings Mitchell Scholars and Alumni together with business and community leaders from across Maine. Interactive sessions cover topics like expanding your network, deciding on career paths, and learning about professional opportunities in Maine.

The value I associate most with the Mitchell Institute is achievement.” Growing up in Saco, Denise always knew she wanted to travel. After graduating from the University of Southern Maine with the help of a Mitchell Scholarship, she spent a decade in Naples, Italy. There she earned a Master’s in Translation, worked as a translator, and also met the love of her life. “My husband is Italian, and we loved living in Italy. But I also felt a strong pull back to Maine, and in 2015, we moved to Biddeford.” Denise has found the perfect employer to put her international experience to use, at CIEE in Portland, which organizes international exchange programs. She also is thrilled to give back to the Mitchell Institute by serving on our Alumni Council, and helping to put together the annual career development day, MILE II.
