T HE T OWN ACA DEMY : A NEW ENGLAND INSTITUTION Since the early 1800s, many small towns throughout northern New England have found that the most efficient way to educate their young people is by funding local independent academies. Taxpayers contribute to the tuition, and the schools are able to attract students from outside the sending districts. Lincoln Academy is a leading example of this hybrid model. Today, LA serves nearly 560 students. Almost 500 are from Newcastle, Damariscotta and more than a dozen surrounding communities, and 90 boarding students hail from across the United States and 19 countries around the world.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a more idyllic setting than ours. We’re located right in the heart of Midcoast Maine, a constellation of “finger” peninsulas that jut into the Atlantic Ocean. Lakes, rivers, bays—water seems to be everywhere. While the campus is in Newcastle, it is intimately connected to the town of Damariscotta, a short walk away across the tidal river of the same name. Damariscotta presents a classic Maine tableau—red brick and wood frame buildings holding shops, cafes and maritime businesses. The people are hardy, hardworking, practical and unpretentious. And as is typical of small Maine towns, the schools and their students are the center of community life. The caring environment students experience at LA is woven into the fabric of the surrounding towns. Everyone comes out to show their support at sports and arts events. Every student belongs and becomes “one of us.” So will you.
A DVENTU RE AWAITS EV ERY W EEKEND The rocky shore is easy to explore. Check out historic Pemaquid Lighthouse, commissioned in 1827. A ferry boat’s ride away sits stunning Monhegan Island, which has drawn artists since the 1800s. Within half an hour’s drive are Rockland and the Farnsworth Art Museum, plus Camden and Rockport to the north and Boothbay Harbor and the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens to the south. Historic shipbuilders Bath Iron Works and the Maine Maritime Museum are on the way to Portland, as is Bowdoin College. Portland, which has become a hot culinary destination, is an hour away, and Boston is three hours away. New York City can be reached by express bus from Portland, and all major
New York airports are served directly by the Portland International Jetport. There’s always fun to be had on the water, with canoeing, kayaking, sailing and whitewater rafting within easy access. In this part of the world, enjoying winter is an art, and we do it with gusto. Skiing and skating are a short drive away; a favorite annual event is the U.S. Toboggan Championships at the Camden Snow Bowl. If you are a boarding student, you’ll meet with fellow boarders and staff who gather regularly for community meetings. Leadership training and community service opportunities are also available.

Lincoln Academy is greater than the sum of its parts, but those parts are terrific on their own. Facilities Capital improvements are evident across campus: In just the last several years we’ve added modern science labs, new classrooms, a state-of-the-art Applied Technology and Engineering Center, a “black box” theater, a spacious dining commons and comfortable new residence halls.
Faculty Our 60 teachers are more than instructors who are fully engaged in their subjects and areas of expertise. They are also mentors, coaches, advisors and neighbors, and they are deeply invested in guiding you as you grow intellectually, emotionally and socially.

SET A COURSE FOR YOUR
F U TU RE Our academic requirements and electives offer many opportunities to gain essential knowledge, explore interests, develop talents and skills, and build your work ethic like a muscle to prepare you for a world where change is a constant. Our goal is to find your innate and sometimes hidden talents, and to send you into the world as strong writers, collaborative partners, creative problem-solvers and critical thinkers. Our curriculum is designed to set you up for success as a student and as a future productive adult. Choose from over 160 courses, ranging from core requirements to exciting electives. By following a trimester system, you have greater

opportunity to explore a broader array of subjects. Our STEM curriculum includes exciting options in robotics and engineering; our foreign language department includes courses in beginning Japanese and Chinese, as well as French and Spanish classes that ladder up to advanced levels. International students also have access to three ESOL levels. Across the curriculum, average class size is 18 students, while the overall student-to-teacher ratio is 11-to-1. Challenge yourself with a choice of 19 Advanced Placement courses, listed opposite. These rigorous programs are designed and certified by the College Board, and those who score well on exams are eligible for college credit.

LEARN BEYOND THE STANDARDS, THE WALLS, AND
YO U R L IM ITS Most high schools of our size aren’t able to offer the scope of programs we do. Lincoln Academy is proud to be able to challenge you on multiple levels, with courses that go beyond traditional academics. The following are among the hands-on classes that can get you out of the regular classroom: Economics & Entrepreneurship program Robotics, Pre-Engineering and Digital Fabrication Marine Studies and Exploration Work-based learning Independent study Eagle Term: Every May, this short interlude allows you to engage in intensive study of subjects outside of traditional required courses.

Take me to the river: Study on the Damariscotta One of our unique offerings is our Marine Studies and Exploration program, which is closely tied to the nature and seafaring tradition that surrounds us. The Damariscotta River is a tidal estuary that leads to the Gulf of Maine, one of the richest fishing grounds in the world. This program equips students with the knowledge they need to navigate the seas and maintain boats, with courses covering everything from SCUBA certification to certification in naval engineering, electrical systems and hydraulic operations. Internships are another key component of the program. Damariscotta is an ancient Abenaki word that means “river of many fishes.” It was true then and true now, especially for oysters. Today, local oysters are a major aquaculture product, with “Dams” sought after by top chefs from Portland to Washington, DC. When the original inhabitants lived here, oysters abounded naturally and discarded oyster shells were piled into “middens.” Traces of a 2,500 year old shell pile can be found at the nearby Whaleback Shell Midden, a state historic site only two miles from the campus.

They continue with an array of extracurricular and co-curricular programs, clubs and teams. Work on student publications, join our musical ensembles or our award-winning theater company. Compete with other schools as a member of the math, debate or robotics teams. Learn about global citizenship with the Model UN, and give back to others through the Civil Rights team and organizations such as Big Brothers Big Sisters, Sigma Sigma Chi and Alpha Sigma Gamma. YO UR WIN GS After a day in the classroom, it’s good to have a change of challenge. Step out onto our fields, trails and courts to find camaraderie, competition and another way to grow in confidence. Lincoln Academy sponsors 27 athletic teams across three seasons at the Varsity and Junior Varsity level. Faculty, staff members, alumni and members of the local community are among the coaches, and a full-time athletic trainer is on site during after-school practices and at all home games.

Our top-notch facilities include extensive athletic fields and tennis courts, an artificial turf soccer field and a new baseball field installed during the 2016-17 school year. Teams compete primarily in Eastern Maine Class B as part of the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference–one of the largest in the state of Maine. Games, matches and races are a focal point of our community, and the local fans turn out to support their teams. Once you’re here, you’ll quickly feel our Eagle spirit.

S U CCES S The guidance and college counselors at Lincoln Academy work closely with students to help them map out their post-high school education and path. Their services include personalized college counseling and course selection mentoring. SAT and TOEFL prep courses are also available after school and on weekends. We invite representatives from a variety of colleges to visit our campus, and we arrange visits to colleges throughout Maine, New Hampshire and the Boston area.
Recent Lincoln Academy graduates have found their way to schools near and far, from the American University of Paris to Bates, Bowdoin and Colby Colleges, from technical schools like Wentworth and Worcester Polytechnic to Ivy League universities like Harvard, from land grant universities such as Purdue and Michigan State University to the University of Maine. Members of our strong alumni network are also happy to answer questions and share their insights.
