Dallas welcomes New Morning Bakery’s second location By David Hayes Itemizer-Observer

New Morning Bakery has been a local landmark in Corvallis for over 40 years, renowned for using sourced, local ingredients everything made from scratch. New owners Tristan and Keara James are hoping that reputation follows to its second location in Dallas. “New Morning is special to us because our staff and customers are like family,” Tristan said. “We truly appreciate how many people really care about the bakery and want to see it continue. Our focus is on making great food from scratch using only the best ingredients.” Living in Sodaville just outside Lebanon, they moved their family to the Dallas area in 2016 in search of more affordable property. Naturally, their reputation as the owners of the successful New Morning Bakery in Corvallis followed them. “The first question most people in the area asked upon meeting us was, ‘When are you going to open here?’ Our answer was always, ‘Maybe if we can find a building to buy,’” Tristan said.

“We lease both our production space and restaurant space in Corvallis and didn’t like the idea of expanding without owning the building we occupied,” Tristan added. “We had been into 788 Main Street a few times and we both thought, ‘this would be a perfect location for another New Morning Bakery,’ but we didn’t imagine it would ever be up for sale.” Then when Pressed Coffee Roasters closed and the building became available in January of 2021, they again jumped at the opportunity. With a lot of very long days, nights, weekends and some very generous friends wielding paint brushes, they were able to open in Dallas at the end of April. “Business in Dallas was initially a bit busier than we expected, so we weren’t staffed up enough on the production end of things to keep up without a lot of overtime,” he explained. “Fortunately, our nearly 50-member crew all put in the extra effort and long hours to keep both restaurants well-stocked.” Keara added they received a surprising amount of support from the city and from Dallas Mayor Brian Dalton. “He called us several times before we even

purchased the building to see how we were doing, was there anything he could do to support us. So, we felt very welcome, for sure,” she said. Looking ahead, the co-owners are looking at utilizing the stage setup that remains in a corner of the front room and resurrecting trivia night. They are not serving alcohol for now and don’t have access to the banquet room, which belongs to the same building owner as Domino’s Pizza. But they have received assurances they can cater in there to anyone else who rents it out. “Hopefully there won’t be more restrictions and we can focus on creating the sort of community pillar in Dallas that New Morning Bakery is in Corvallis,” Tristan summed up. “I’ve always found that if you make great food, people will find you and spread the word.” What’s ahead for 2022? Looking to replicate New Morning’s success, City Recorder Sam Kaufmann said Two Wolves Taproom has filed for OLCC permits and will hopefully be opening soon on Church Street. In addition, ASCENTEC Engineering is in the preliminary phases of opening in the former Tyco building on Monmouth Cutoff.

What pandemic? Activity continues in busy City of Monmouth By David Hayes Itemizer-Observer

If you look around the city of Monmouth and see all of the new building activity, you would be hard pressed to know the city was in the second year of a global pandemic. The city continues to see on-going investment in its infrastructure, housing and commercial development. In 2021, the city approved eight new business registrations, including several new tasty food cart offerings — Flapjacks, Luke Town Eats, Elote Veloz and Dough-licious. Ash Creek Station saw the opening of Starbucks and construction of a new 12,000 squarefoot building, a portion of which will house a new O’Reilly Auto Parts Store, along with several other commercial tenant spaces now available for lease. Taco Bell received permit approval in the fall and is scheduled to break ground any day now. Looking forward, two additional commercial buildings — a new commercial office space and a new retail building — are planned for construction at Ash Creek Station in 2022. The past year also saw the construction of Monmouth Commons, a new mixed-use building in downtown Monmouth. The development will provide 27 new housing units,

along with the return of the Neighborhood Market, a new restaurant and one additional commercial tenant space available for rent on the ground floor. Another exciting project that will commence in the coming year downtown is the long-awaited construction of a new City Hall. Since 1965, the city has been talking about the need to replace the current City Hall building. On May 18, 2021, Monmouth voters helped make history by approving a general obligation bond measure to add funding to city reserves to replace City Hall and Volunteer Hall. The city is in the process of securing a general contractor and obtaining permit approval. Demolition of the current City Hall and Volunteer Hall is anticipated this winter. The new City Hall facility will be combined with the council chambers and court building at the same location. The new building will be accessible and safe for all, and include community meeting space and a public plaza. On the residential side, on-going housing shortages fueled the construction of new dwellings in Monmouth. The city approved 53 residential permits in 2021 with many of the new homes located in the recently developed Hoffman Estates Subdivision and Phase 8 of Edwards Addition. Approval was also granted

for a new 80-unit multi-family development in northwest Monmouth off Riddle Road. This past year also saw the return of students to campus and in-person performing arts and sporting events at Western Oregon University. The city also saw the return of many of our beloved community festivals and events such as the Fourth of July festival, Music in the Park summer concert series, and the annual Holiday Light Parade/Tree Lighting. On the recreation front, fundraising continues for the new regional skate park facility, with the hope of construction beginning on the facility in late 2022/early 2023. Looking forward, the city is finalizing plans for how to spend federal COVID-19 relief funds from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) that will further leverage and expand investments in Monmouth’s infrastructure and community needs. “Monmouth is at a pivotal moment in its history,” noted Community and Economic Development Director, Suzanne Dufner. “With the infusion of ARPA funding, we have the opportunity to make smart and lasting investments that will benefit our community now and well into the future.”
