Known as the ‘Land of Legends,’ there’s a colourful tale down seemingly every cobblestoned lane of the charming Old Town, where medieval myths mingle with modern restaurants and quaint cafes. Although 70% of Lublin’s historical buildings survived WWII - including 2 original city gates - the city lost its rich Jewish culture and fell into fairly shabby shape until a recent rebound. Today Lublin is an exciting destination for travel and study, food and culture, away from the tourist hordes.

Festival of Lublin Legends, “Viper”
Thanks to Lublin's unique cultural heritage, with its diversity of faiths and changing anxieties over the centuries, various stories and superstitions have become attached to the major sites and landmarks of the city’s historic centre. The oldest of these is that of a three-headed dragon, or 'viper,' who chose to live under the city and was responsible for bringing the rain for the crops as well as guarding Lublin from dead souls who roamed the land. Elsewhere, Saint Michael is said to have visited the dreams of a Cracovian prince napping under an oak tree where Plac Po Farze now stands, demanding him to take his army and pursue the local Baltic tribes who had been ransacking the city. In the market square, an unmanned oxen-drawn cart loaded with golden treasures is said to have appeared one dark and stormy night after lightning struck! On a quiet corner of ul. Jezuicka is a cursed executioner's stone, which is said to bring bad luck upon anyone who dares to touch it. The clock on Kraków Gate is said to have a mind of its own, thanks to a long-passed alcoholic timekeeper, Mr. Lutowski, who would take out his anger by throwing bottles at the clock’s mechanism. Lastly, on ul. Bernardyńska, a failed lawyer named Boczarski is said to have incorrectly constructed a windmill on his property, causing him to go bankrupt; his ghost can be seen moping around the site to this very day.
