Truman’s Mother: [looking through a photo album] Here‘s us at Mount Rushmore. Do you remember, Truman? When Dad was still with us? That was quite a drive, you slept the whole way there. Truman: [looking closer at the old photo of himself as a boy with his parents in front of an inaccurate mock-up of Mount Rushmore] It looks so small. Truman’s Mother: [quickly turning the page] Things always do when you look back, darling.1
On Urbanism and the Iconography of Disney’s Themed Spaces
Anna Valentiny

Damien Assini (07.01.1989) was born in Luxembourg where he attended the Fräi-Öffentlech Waldorfschoul Lëtzebuerg. Being passionate by the arts and the process of designing, Damien moved to London to study a BA in Architecture at Central Saint Martins’ College of art and design. Interested in self-build and community participation, Damien then moved to Rio (Brazil) as a research student for Columbia University. Then, he further pursued his architectural discourse in London, at the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London. There, he graduated with a Master of Architecture and was awarded the Bartlett School of Architecture medal for outstanding academic achievement. Since September Damien is now working for Foster + Partners in London.

Why re-imagining the HS2? Infrastructure was placed at the core of the Prime Minister’s post-Brexit economic manifesto with a pledge to increase the percentage of nationalrevenue spent on projects such as transport or energy. My initial research findings discussed an, arguably broken Britain and allowed a more precise understanding of why reforms and infrastructure spending can be crucial to the future of nations and individual livelihoods. Factors such as the need to redefine itself as a united country on the world stage by improving service facilities and revenues might have contributed amongst other factor for Britain to put large schemes on its agenda. Plans such as these often come with worries/ the negative side-effects of gentrification, displacement or loss of existing city heritage. While mega-projects are embraced to pursue global objectives, it is important that strategic community-based demands are able to utilize them to satisfy local needs. TAn analysis of the British press and its influence on its readers served to engage a discussion as to what view of the HS2 the media reflects. The generally critical position of newspapers and particularly the Guardian have allowed for an evaluation of the scheme that questioned the benefits offered by the government through the public media. The analysis and studies suggesting a need for economic growth encouraging community participation and heritage celebration have made it possible to revise the HS2 project by implementing a more speculative design proposal prioritizing local needs. This renewed scheme will re-imagine the HS2 line without the railway but as an emblematic route aiming for a stronger United Kingdom. It will apply the allocated funds and re-use the land acquired along the route for its formation. The hypothetical scenario aims to ask questions such as: How could the country function as a spatial and political entity now that Great Britain has voted out of the European Union? Can we speculate a different approach to an economic and social decline by repurposing the land and budget acquired for HS2 to suggest a different infrastructure project?

ADATOFILM FREITAG 01 - Moving Pictures

The Human Scale 2012, Dänemark, 1h 23m, OV Regie: Andreas Dalsgaard "Taking as its model the work of Danish architect Jan Gehl, “The Human Scale” makes an excellent case for designing cities around people instead of automobiles, traffic flow having dominated city planning since the 1960s. Andreas M. Dalsgaard’s documentary examines cities, from New York to Chongqing, which demonstrate various problems, solutions and possibilities for urban development, each example illustrated by distinctive, well-composed cityscapes and discussed by local talking-head officials, planners and architects. If Dalsgaard’s advocacy of Gehl’s utopian vision largely ignores the socioeconomic forces arrayed against it, the film should nevertheless enthuse pedestrians, bike riders and public-space proponents everywhere." Last Exit Alexanderplatz 2015, Dänemark/ Deutschland, 56 m, OmeU Regie: Hans C. Post

Blade Runner, 1982, USA/Hong Kong, 1h57, OV Regie: Ridley Scott "The view of the future offered by Ridley Scott's muddled yet mesmerizing ''Blade Runner'' is as intricately detailed as anything a science-fiction film has yet envisioned. The year is 2019, the place Los Angeles, the landscape garish but bleak. The city is a canyon bounded by industrial towers, some of which belch fire. Advertising billboards, which are everywhere, now feature lifelike electronic people who are the size of giants. The police cruise both horizontally and vertically on their patrol routes, but there is seldom anyone to arrest, because the place is much emptier than it used to be. In an age of space travel, anyone with the wherewithal has presumably gone away. Only the dregs remain." Janet Maslin, The New York Times
