WHY EASTER EGGS?

Where does the tradition of Easter Eggs come from?

Evidence shows the tradition dates back to the Mesopotamian era which extended from 3000BC to 539BC where eggs were a symbol of fertility and new life. The early Christians after Jesus Christ’s Crucifixion took this symbolism into their new faith and adopted it as their own. They added to the tradition by painting the (usually duck’s) eggs red to symbolise the death of Christ and made two tiny holes in the egg to ‘blow’ the contents allowing the egg to be kept for a longer period. They regarded the egg shell, painted red as the empty tomb of the Lord Jesus and were given to adults and children in Medieval Churches to symbolise the end of Lent and a New Life available to all who loved and worshipped the risen Lord Jesus Christ.

We move on in History.

Chocolate was introduced into Europe in the 16th Century from South America by the Spanish. The French became the innovators and creators of models in Chocolate and in the 17th Century made the first Chocolate Easter Eggs. The Victorians in the 19th Century had the idea of putting inside the egg a gift, a crucifix, or a small booklet with appropriate Easter scriptures. In the 20th Century the contents became sweets.

You may be on the receiving end of a Chocolate Easter Egg, lucky you, or on the giving end, that’s much better, but I want you to stop for a moment and think what it means.

You are reminding the giver and the receiver of the great gift of God. He gave so much more than a Chocolate Easter Egg as a present, he gave the life of his Son Jesus to make it

possible for anyone who believes, loves and follows Jesus’ teaching to get a new life – like the Chicken that hatches out of a real duck’s or hen’s egg.

The Bible records Jesus as saying “I am come that you might have (a) new life and that this new life will be more abundant, more wonderful more blessed than any life in the past” (John chapter 10 verse 10). 30 years after Christ was crucified Paul wrote to the church in Corinth and said “if anyone is in Christ (i.e. a person with that new life) he is a new creation, the old things in his life will have passed away, and his whole life will be new (2 Corinthians chapter 5 verse 17).

And you can have the new life as well as an Easter Egg!

A very good friend and long-time member of our WI, Hazel Nation passed away and very kindly and unexpectedly left us money ‘To treat all the ladies to a lunch’. This we did at The Whalebone recently and they looked after us very well with an excellent choice of menu and lovely food. We had photos of Hazel on the tables and we raised several glasses to her. There were a lot of memories of Hazel and it was so good to remember her this way. She was a generous lady and ‘WI through and through’. She will never be forgotten.

Sadly, we have lost another member, Joyce Hickey who, due to ill health has not been able to join us for quite a while. We are thinking of her and her family.

We had a most enjoyable afternoon at the Brick Lane Music Hall recently for a St Patrick’s Day extravaganza. There was an Irish-themed three course lunch, after which we were entertained by the cheeky Master of Ceremonies, Vincent Hayes. He was followed by several male singers, all of whom had beautiful voices. There was a talented girl, tap dancing and an amazing violinist who could not only play classical pieces but also Irish jigs. She performed a lot of these whilst dancing!

It was a wonderful afternoon and many thanks go to Shirley for organising another super outing. Better than that, she has several others up her sleeve as well!

This month was our 103rd birthday and we celebrating with a lunch at 1.00pm before our meeting. The Eatery came up trumps again and the food was of excellent quality and plentiful, as usual.

The entertainment was provided by the hand bell team, Absolutely Chiming. They performed well-known tunes and even asked for ‘volunteers’ when they played ‘Happy Birthday’ for us. Those who came forward enjoyed the experience but there won’t be any new members of the team from our ladies, any time soon!! The various bells were demonstrated and we were very surprised at the cost of them. It was a really good concert and we are very grateful to them for helping to make our afternoon most enjoyable.

After this we had tea and birthday cake and thanks go to the Committee for setting up, making tea and generally ensuring that the afternoon went well.

Very informative Recording of our 23 March Virtual Public Meeting “Will SWF get better health services from 1st April’s NHS changes?” is on our website’s Activities. Chief Officers told us how NHS Essex, our Hospitals and our Mental Health Trust are changing and improving.

Our local Hospitals’Trust goes into an “intensive recovery programme” inApril after the Health Secretary said “failure has been tolerated for too long”. Our Monday virtual meeting heard the new Chief Executive is getting to grips with its challenges and we hope the extra support will help get our local acute services up to scratch very soon. We wish them well with this and will help in any way we can.

Please tell us what you think about English Resident Doctors striking from 713April, straight after the long Easter weekend? Do they have patient and public support?

Measles outbreak of highly contagious disease, in north London. Most cases are in schools and nurseries; some children require hospital treatment, "particularly those not immunised". Outbreaks spread easily and Essex is close by. Parents should get children vaccinated and check children’s vaccination status. Between 1 January and 16 March 2026 270 measles cases have been confirmed in England, 35 more since 12 March, mostly driven by the North London outbreak. The blog: “What are the symptoms of measles and how can I best protect my child?” is updated.

At time of writing: No cases of Meningitis have been reported in recent days. The outbreak appears to have peaked. Essex NHS says: While the overall risk to the wider public remains low, Meningitis can develop quickly and become very serious. Early symptoms can feel like flu or other common illnesses like fever, muscle and joint pain and feeling tired. Symptoms can worsen quickly and may include severe headache, confusion and seizures. “Meningitis and septicaemia: know the symptoms and when to get help” is on the NHS website.

DOUBT CAST ON EFFECTIVENESS OF WIDELY USED ‘KT-TAPE’ (aka Kinesio taping) may not be all that effective, suggests the online journal'BMJ Evidence Based Medicine.'

The cotton-based, breathable, adhesive tape, often seen on the bodies of high profile athletes and sportsmen & women, may look cool but the evidence of efficacy is very weak.

KT taping, created in the 1970s, has been extensively used for easing the discomfort of musculoskeletal disorders and increasing mobility. If applied correctly, it is thought to work by lifting the skin, stimulating sensory receptors, and enhancing local blood circulation, but several recent clinical trials have reported inconsistent findings for its use.

Whilst it may confer immediate to short term benefits, current evidence is “very uncertain.” This, plus potential side effects such as skin irritation, may limit its use in clinical practice.

A PROPOSED "GARDEN VILLAGE" DEVELOPMENT aims to build up to 1,770 homes in Stow Maries. This will have implications for healthcare in SWF. The SWF's Town Council's response to an earlier application for a development (550 houses) in Althorne made the following points: "Regarding health care, there is the CVMC in SWF which is struggling to cope with SWF’s current resident’s needs let alone coping with the thousand plus houses earmarked in the new development at SWF. The Centre currently deals with 10,000 patients, they are understaffed and all available rooms in the Centre are already utilised. There appears to be no room for expansion ... and ... there are no other NHS medical facilities in SWF."

The same observations presumably apply to the development in Stow Maries. Google: SMOG - Stow Maries Opposition Group for more details. WARNING TO FAMILIES VISITING FARMS THIS EASTER. Data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA)shows that the majority of farm-linked illness outbreaks occur in spring. The BBC reports that " Health officials are urging people not to handle lambs on farm visits this spring after an outbreak of a parasitic infection linked to farm animals last year left dozens sick. Michael, aged four, was among more than 80 people who fell ill with a stomach infection caused by the cryptosporidium parasite, linked to a petting farm in April 2025. He spent four days in hospital with a fever and severe diarrhoea.

Norovirus activity remains high but is decreasing, remaining at expected levels. Cases are high in adults aged 65+; children also suffer badly. To reduce the spread, please practice good hygiene.Alcohol gels don’t kill Norovirus; wash hands regularly with warm soapy water and use bleach-based products to clean surfaces to protect everyone and reduce spread.

This year,Asthma and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) patients will start getting better care closer to home through a new £10m government, NHS and pharmaceuticals partnership. Tens of thousands of patients will get faster, betterand more personalised care to tackle leading causes of death and preventable hospital admissions. Emergency admissions will be avoided; winter pressures eased. 1 in 5 people are affected by respiratory disease during their lifetime. Respiratory disease is the third leading cause of death in the UK, with 700,000+ hospital admissions and 6million annual inpatient bed days, most unplanned.

10,000+ calls to Martha’s Rule helplines in the first 16 months of this NHS scheme, have saved lives and helped thousands of patients benefit from changes to their care. NHS trusts must fully implement this by March 2027. Between September 2024 and December 2025, 10,119 escalation calls were made by patients, families and staff. 3,457 calls helped identify acute deterioration, leading to 1,885 patients receiving changed treatment, including 446 potentially life-saving interventions. 6,000 calls addressed clinical, communication, or coordination concerns, leading to improvements in care or system navigation. Hospitals are publicising Martha’s Rule and making it easy-to-understand and use by patients, families and staff.

Serious problems with the supply of bone cement, crucial in orthopaedic surgery, are resolved. Sufficient supply is back in the system. Elective surgery has been restored.Additional theatre time is enabling patients who were postponed to be rescheduled.

Those who do handle lambs are advised to thoroughly wash their hands afterwards. That said, Michael's Dad said he "had his hands washed and sanitised immediately after, (and) he changed his clothes when we got home."

Sad news - but when you also consider that separating lambs and stopping them feeding from their mothers can be harmful, it's best to heed this advice.

BACTERIAL MENINGITIS HAS BEEN IN THE NEWS. When I started out in general practice there wasn't any protection from meningitis so it was a major worry. TheHib vaccine(which protects againstHaemophilus influenzaetype b - aka Hib - that can cause meningitis, pneumonia, & septicemia, particularly in children under five was introduced in 1992. It is highly effective and lead to a massive reduction in cases globally. Then in 1999, the Meningococcal C (MenC) vaccine was introduced.

The landmark Bexsero (MenB) vaccinewas introduced in the UK on1/9/2015for babies as part of the routine childhood immunisation schedule - making us a world leader. It has resulted in a 75% reduction in cases among vaccinated groups. TheMenACWY vaccinewas introduced inAugust/September 2015for teenagers and young adults. Both were introduced to combat rising cases of meningitis and septicaemia - with great success.

My abiding memory of the pre-vaccine meningococcal meningitis era was being got out of the shower one morning by a phone call from a very astute receptionist. It was about a child with a temperature. I vaguely recall that my language was not all that might have been expected from a caring professional - until she mentioned that the caller's son was crying in the background and he sounded "really weird." That was enough to get me sprinting semi-clad to my car and breaking the sound barrier on the way to the house. Mum phoned the ambulance while I injected the penicillin. If it hadn't been for that receptionist the story would NOT have had a happy ending!

Many school leavers going to university miss getting theMenACWY jaband teenagers, young adults (especially first-year university students)many of whom are carriers (and babies)are at the highest risk of meningitis due to social behaviour, close-quarters living, and developing immune systems. Next academic year's intake should ideally find out their vaccination status from their GP practice in the next 3 months and have the jabin the summer months.

Coeliac Desease or Gluten Intolerance - What’s the Difference?

Hello. It’s me, Kelly Beagle, your local registered nutritional therapist and nurse, and this month I want to talk about something that causes a lot of confusion in clinic, coeliac disease and gluten intolerance.

Many people notice they feel better when they reduce gluten and immediately assume they must have coeliac disease. Others struggle with years of symptoms before anyone even suggests testing. So let’s clear a few things up. Coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition. When someone with coeliac disease eats gluten, their immune system attacks the lining of the small intestine. Over time this damages the tiny finger-like structures responsible for absorbing nutrients. As you can imagine, that can cause all sorts of problems.

Classic symptoms include bloating, diarrhoea, stomach pain, weight loss and fatigue. But interestingly, many people have much less obvious symptoms such as anaemia, low iron, headaches, skin rashes, joint pain or fertility issues. Some people have almost no digestive symptoms at all, which is why it can go undiagnosed for years.

Gluten intolerance (sometimes called non-coeliac gluten sensitivity) is different. It does not involve the same autoimmune damage to the gut. However, people can still experience very real symptoms when they eat gluten, including bloating, brain fog, headaches, fatigue and digestive upset.

So what can trigger these problems? Genetics play a role in coeliac disease, but gut health, infections, stress and

changes in the microbiome may also influence how symptoms develop. With gluten intolerance, other factors often come into play such as gut inflammation, poor digestion, imbalances in gut bacteria or sensitivities to other components of wheat.

One important tip: if you suspect coeliac disease, do not remove gluten before testing. The blood test used by doctors relies on gluten being present in the diet. Removing it too early can make results misleading. Some signs that may be worth investigating include persistent bloating, ongoing digestive discomfort, unexplained fatigue, low iron that will not improve, frequent mouth ulcers, skin rashes, or a family history of coeliac disease.

As a nutritional therapist, I look at the bigger picture. Sometimes gluten itself is the problem. Sometimes the issue lies deeper in gut health, digestion or inflammation. Understanding the root cause helps guide the best approach rather than simply removing foods and hoping for the best. Your gut does a remarkable amount of work for you every day. If it keeps complaining, it is usually trying to tell you something. Your body tends to whisper before it shouts, so it is always worth listening early.

Celebrations

Over to you

I would like to thank everyone that came to my assistance at approximately 4pm on Friday 20th March.

I very spectacularly fell head first onto the road outside Elmwood Primary school. Although most children had left for home, several parents and children had remained.

Thank you Glyn for immediately attempting to staunch the bleeding and holding my hand for such a long time. You kept me calm. I think I was in the road for almost one hour. Lisa (who a friend thought may have been Rachel) for taking charge, phoning for an ambulance, blocking the road each side of me with vehicles whilst first aid was applied.

The two wonderful staff members from Elmwood School who supplied blankets, a chair for me when I was able to be lifted up, and tea!

The parents and children that supplied support and their sweets and things to help me. Not forgetting the policeman who stayed, I am grateful to you all. What a brilliant place we all live in.

The main wound on my head has been glued back together and I was able to go home after treatment with lots of medication and instructions. I am so very grateful to everyone that stayed and helped me. Thank you all. Eileen

Happy 7th Birthday! We hope you have the best day! X
Happy birthday Alfie, love you lots, mum, shane, oli, ella and Elizabeth x
Happy big 40 Dad! Have a great time celebrating.

The Eyott 2026 season will be starting soon.

In case you hadn’t noticed, the last few months have been wet, it has rained a lot, and when it hasn’t been raining it’s been windy, sometimes, just to mix things up a bit, it’s been raining and windy at the same time. Add to this the cold, and you’ll see why there has been little activity at Eyott Sailing Club so far this year.

But all of that is about to change. It’s officially spring, the sun’s shone on at least two days this month and, by the time you read this, British Summer Time may well have started. Of course, these are all great harbingers of spring, but the one that matters most is the Eyott Sailing Club’s Firstling Race, which this year will be held on Sunday 22nd of March.

As the name suggests, the Firstling race is the first trophy race of the year - we like to keep things simple at Eyott, and for many of us it is the first time we have been on the water since the end of last season. The Firstling is an event that attracts only the most hardy sailors. The water in the Crouch is still very cold, and a dip in the river is best avoided.

Because we have to work around the tides, there is not sailing at Eyott every weekend. That said, we have a packed racing and social calendar in place for 2026; so who should you be looking out for on the water this year? Of course there’s Andy, in his green Comet, or anything he sails actually, he’s always at or near the front of the fleet. The same

can be said of John, in his bright yellow Miracle, Jasper. John’s son, Toby is following in his father’s footsteps and always does well in his single-handed Comet, but right now he’s away at university, so we won’t see much of him for at least another couple of months. Similarly, Alexander, who regularly wins trophy races, is working out of the area right now, so he’ll be a less frequent competitor this season.

All this is great news for the rest of us, the ones who normally finish somewhere near the middle of the fleet. Mark, sailing his Heron named Tia, always puts in a solid performance, as do Grace or Bob in their Comets, any one of them could easily collect trophies at the end of the season, even Robyn is in with a chance, if the conditions are right for her Heron which is often crewed by her six year old son.

At the back of the fleet, Ray, Mike and William are amongst the sailors who know they’re unlikely to bask in the winner's glory. But that doesn’t stop them waging a fierce battle - but for them it’s not be last.

If you’d like to know more, then come along to Eyott Sailing Club at the end of Whitetree Court, off Celeborn Street. You can meet all the competitors, see how the racing is organised and, if you’re not worried about getting a little wet, have a go. Or you can visit our website www.eyottsailingclub.org.uk where you can find out more about the club.

50 years of broadcasting – thanks to local newspaper ad

An afternoon of starstudded stories, backstage gossip and musical bingo is coming to South Woodham Ferrers this April to celebrate a remarkable broadcasting milestone.

Steve Scruton’s love of radio began in the 1960s, listening to pirate stations broadcasting just off the Essex coast. That passion led him to Hospital Radio Chelmsford in 1976 after answering a local newspaper advert— marking the start of decades broadcasting to patients. Today, he remains President of the service.

After roles with Radio Orwell, Essex Radio and Radio Cambridgeshire, Steve secured a full-time position at BBC Essex, again through a newspaper advert. His career went on to include a 22-year run presenting the Afternoon Show, alongside major outside broadcasts and station events. In 2004, he fulfilled a lifelong ambition by broadcasting from a ship during a recreation of pirate radio aboard the LV18 off Harwich. He has also hosted the BBC Essex Christmas Day show for over 30 years.

Steve will be sharing

stories from his career, including interviewing thousands of guests. Highlights include an unexpected hug from Rod Stewart and a shocking offer from a former East End gangster. He’s also worked with his radio hero Johnnie Walker and met the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Joining him is Alan Goldsmith, one of the last remaining promoters from the 1960s music scene. Beginning his career at just 18, Alan worked with some of the biggest names in music, including Elton John, The Who, Small Faces and Dionne Warwick. He’ll reveal how much he paid Stevie Wonder for a local gig and how surprised he was when the star arrived in a modest Ford Popular with no entourage.

Alan will also share why he turned down Tom Jones and chose not to book The Rolling Stones, along with tales of organising events during the era of mods and rockers. His stories lift the curtain on the realities of the music industry fees, demands, and the occasional tantrum.

The event also features film clips of daring arena stunts from an era before modern health and safety, plus several rounds of musical bingo with prizes.

Radio Rock Bingo takes place at Champions Manor Hall, South Woodham Ferrers, on Tuesday 14th April at 2pm. Tickets are £15, including bingo entry. The show also visits New Windmill Hall, Upminster, on Tuesday 28th April at 2pm.

April has seen the final results of our Winter Pairs, in house competition. First place has already been announced and occupied by John Betts and Jim Pegg but now it can be revealed that Doug McDowall and Denis Aston, affectionately known as The Billericay Boys, secured runners up position in their first season with us. Well done chaps. Third place goes to Sue Morden, Tony Seaman and Brian Pearson, who valiantly joined the team in order to complete the competition. Very well done to you and everyone who took part. Managing weather and some health issues was at times, challenging but as always, the lads and lassies of the club pulled together and made it work. Thanks also goes to Paul Brown and his able assistant Sue Morden, for keeping and continually updating the Winter Pairs league table.

The new season is almost upon us and teams are being planned with a view to possible promotion but also the magical element of fun and enjoyment whether it's playing in league matches or various friendly games. Playing in warmer, brighter conditions always helps of course.

In the meantime, the opportunities for competitions doesn't stop. Each year a small squad of members enter a competition known as Indoor/Outdoor, played at Jacks Bowls Centre in Latchingdon. It's designed for players who normally play outdoors to compete indoors against 5 other clubs during the Winter period. It's quite a challenge as the surfaces are very different and there isn't much time to get used to the change and get some practice.

Despite that, our squad have managed to beat teams from Southminster, Burnham and Runwell & Wickford, to win our league. This gives us the opportunity to play against Maldon in a league final on Saturday April 18th. We all wish the squad the best of luck.

Sadly, we lost three dear friends from our club who will be greatly missed. Sheila Purser, Chas Garnish and Derek Fearnley. As a respectful token of remembrance, a game was played by Richard, Susan, Paul and Alf and dedicated to their memory.

When the sun comes out, the jackets come off and the good banter begins. Good friendships have been and continue to be made at the South Woodham Ferrers Bowls Club. Onwards and upwards.

RESIDENTS’ UPDATE APRIL ‘26

Cllr. Bob Massey - Essex County Council

As you may have read elsewhere, County Council elections are being held on May 7th.

I have been selected to represent the Conservative Party and will be standing for re-election.

This election is unusual, in that, not only has it been delayed for a year, but also, the elected councillors will only serve until Local Government Reorganisation - and unitary councils - kick in.

I’m honoured to have been able to represent our Town’s residents at the County Council since 2017, the first County Councillor to live in our Town. Since then, I’ve worked at the County Council to get our roads and footpaths maintained.

We have fewer potholes locally than in many areas of Essex.

I recently reported online that Essex Highways have finally agreed to upgrade the ‘Asda’ pedestrian crossing to a light controlled crossing. This upgrade should take place during this summer’s school holidays.

And rest assured, I am constantly pressuring the Cabinet Member for Highways to repair the A132 to Rettendon!

In recent years, County Councillors have been allocated ‘Locality Grants’ to spend in their local communities. In the past I have used those grants to: provide toys for the Town Council’s toddler playgroup, funded four defibrillators around the Town (at Heralds Way, outside the Fire Station, at Creekview Road and outside The Curlew pub), and secured four new sets of steps up to the sea wall - at Compass Gardens and at Hawbush Creek, known to local Park Runners as ‘Bob’s Hill’.

This year’s grant has helped equip our Town’s new Scout group.

I remain committed to the future of our Town. There are challenging times ahead and I hope to be able to use my skills and experience in the coming years.

To be able to do that, of course, I will need your vote on May 7th.

I will be hosting ‘coffee and chat’ sessions in coming weeks, at The Eatery on Saturday mornings, from eleven until twelve.

Come by and say hello.

Alternatively, residents can contact me directly at cllr.bob.massey@essex.gov.uk or find me on Facebook.

CROUCH VALLEY

Crouch Valley U3A held our first large event of the year on 21st February. This was a 60s night which saw around 100 people in the Village Hall dancing the night away to live music from Mars Garden Band. The dance floor was buzzing all evening with everyone enjoying reliving the golden era of classic hits from the 1960s.

We have several other exciting events planned for the year, including a coach trip to Cambridge in May and an Afternoon Cream Tea in the autumn. Add to that our monthly speaker meetings and outings with the special interests groups, alongside the regular opportunities to participate in a wide range of activities from Art Appreciation and Family History to Singing for Fun, which is basically mass karaoke, means there's always something to do. And this gives the perfect opportunity to make new friends and get involved with your local community.

We meet on the fourth Tuesday of each month 24pm at Champions Manor, so why not come along next month and see if you like us? Full details can be found on the website at https://crouchvalley. u3asite.uk. Hope to meet you there.

Essex Mini League

A massive well done to our Essex Mini League squad for the first EML of the year held at Southend! Brilliant swimming, lots of first timers and loads of smiles!

“HE IS NOT HERE; FOR HE HAS RISEN, JUST AS HE SAID.”

This was the phrase told to Mary Magdalene and the other Mary by an angel who descended from heaven and rolled back the heavy stone from Jesus’ grave after the sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning (see Matthew 28). This declaration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ signifies his victory over death and is foundational to the Christian faith. A few days before his death, Jesus testified, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die” (John 11:25-26).

Christians around the world are celebrating the Easter season which lasts for fifty days, culminating with the solemnity of Pentecost. It is preceded by forty days of prayer, fasting and almsgiving to prepare ourselves for the new life which Jesus ushers into the world. The belief that God raised Jesus from the dead offers billions of Christians throughout the world hope and assurance of eternal life through faith in him.

Some people are sceptical about the resurrection of Christ. However, there is much evidence supporting it, such as the empty tomb, the eyewitness appearances to his disciples and over 500 people at different times and locations, the early written sources and creeds written within a few years of the events, and the radical transformation of his disciples from fearful and disheartened to bold proclaimers of his resurrection along with their willingness to suffer and die for their faith in the risen Christ. One of the early sources is from the Apostle Paul who writes to the Corinthians, “if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith.” (1 Cor 15:14). He is so adamant of this fact that he argues Christianity would collapse without it, rendering his preaching and faith worthless.

Jesus calls his disciples to imitate him by loving one another has he has loved us. He loved us so much that he freely died for us so that we might enjoy life more abundantly as his followers. The Easter season is a call for Christians to renew their faith, and filled with God’s Spirit, to help make this world become a better, more loving world to live in; it is a time for enemies to reconcile and work for peace. May the Risen Lord bless you and give you that peace, love and joy which your heart thirsts for.

Monique Edwards

Monique passed away peacefully after a short illness, surrounded by her family, on the 7th March. She was the beloved wife of John Edwards, a former Borough Councillor for the town. Monique was much loved, and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Her funeral will take place at Maldon Fields on the 8th April. Family flowers only; donations in her memory should be made to Cancer Research UK.

Some

Some of us are old enough to remember the days before supermarkets came to dominate our food shopping and we would go to the green grocer to buy our fruit and vegetables. The supply of fresh fruit and vegetables before the rise of the supermarket was a very local affair. Almost every community would have eaten locally grown produce but some areas had the advantage of being able to supply consumers further afield. Using Broomfield as a case study, this talk will necessarily only be an introduction into the much bigger topic of market and nursery gardening across Essex. Along the way there’ll be some diversions as well!

South Woodham Ferrers Local History Society is very much looking forward to the return of Neil Wiffen to regale us with the history of market gardens in mid Essex described by Neil as a lyrical tale. My own researches into the names on Woodham Ferrers War Memorials brought home to me that there were several market gardens here in South Woodham Ferrers so it will be great to learn more about this interesting subject

You do not have to be a member of South Woodham Local History Society to enjoy our talks which take place at Champions Manor Hall, Hullbridge Road, CM3 5LJ at 8.15 pm.
