A note from the Editor…

A note from the Editor…

Welcome to the April edition of Burnham on Crouch Focus, where spring is well underway and our community continues to show exactly what makes it such a special place to live.

This month, we celebrate an extraordinary achievement as local rower Dawn Smith and her partner Paul Lore set a new world record rowing the Atlantic — a remarkable feat that puts Burnham firmly on the global map.

Closer to home, there’s plenty happening throughout April and beyond. The Burnham Primary PTA Curry & Quiz Night takes place on Friday 24th April, followed by the St George’s Day event on Saturday 25th April at Althorne Church Hall. Looking ahead, the Rotary Club Ramble on Saturday 2nd May promises a fantastic day out while raising money for local causes. Families can also enjoy free Easter craft sessions on 7th and

9th April at Burnham and Maldon libraries.

We also highlight the brilliant work of our local RNLI volunteers, recently called out in difficult conditions to assist a vessel in trouble — a reminder of the dedication and skill within our community. Alongside this, Burnham WI celebrates an incredible 99 years, with plans already underway for next year’s centenary.

As always, thank you to our advertisers, contributors and readers — your continued support keeps this magazine thriving and truly community-led.

If you have an event, story or local news to share, we’d love to hear from you.

Deadline for the next issue is Friday 24th April 2026

Local ocean rower Dawn Smith BEM, founder of Row Aurora and a Burnham resident rowed the Club’s Rotary pennant across the Ocean with American Paul Lore on their expedition “Hometown Row.” They set a new world record for the fastest mixed pair to row the Atlantic east to west, Canary Islands to Antigua.

Paul spent weeks at sea in a 9-metre ocean boat, rowing in three-hour shifts around the clock. They encountered powerful trade winds, large Atlantic swells, intense heat, and the physical and mental challenge of living in a small boat far from land!

Much more than rowing, the venture connects communities on both sides of the Atlantic and shows the power of collaboration and shared purpose. It highlights the clubs’ values of service and support for those who have served their own communities.

Back in December 2025, the members attending their WI Christmas lunch were given a gift by the President, Penny Patman, of some Spring bulbs for them to plant and nurture and bring to the 99th birthday meeting in March for Keith to judge.

We also celebrated the birthdays of several of our members with the usual round of “Happy Birthday”. There were also 2 special birthdays, both ending with a nought, but ladies should never divulge their age, so were all left wondering.

Next year, of course, will be our Centenary, 100 years since the Burnham-on-Crouch WI began its long association with the Federation of Essex Women’s Institutes, and so we are beginning already to plan our celebrations. We are immensely proud of our staying power in what has sometimes been difficult times and are looking forward to enjoying our next birthday.

Thanks

Operation Overt

Old habits don’t leave you from the police force. You still watch, still notice, still trust your instincts when something doesn’t quite sit right.

I knew the areas. Walthamstow, parts of East London, even stretches out towards High Wycombe places I’d worked, driven through, carried out jobs without a second thought. Ordinary streets. Ordinary houses.

Until they weren’t.

The scale of what was uncovered was staggering. A plot to bring down multiple transatlantic flights using liquid explosives disguised as soft drinks. Hydrogen peroxide mixed and hidden in bottles, triggered using components from everyday items like disposable cameras and batteries. The kind of ingenuity you’d almost admire if it wasn’t so deadly.

From what came out later, this wasn’t rushed. This was months in the making. Surveillance teams, hundreds of officers, MI5 heavily involved watching suspects, tracking movements, even installing covert cameras inside a flat that turned out to be a bomb factory.

That part stuck with me.

A flat. In a residential block. Neighbours going about their day, completely unaware of what was being built just metres away.

To apply please email your CV to info@smithsep.co.uk

I’ve been in thousands of homes over the years both in the job and out of it. You never really think about what’s behind closed doors unless you have reason to. In this case, the reason came just in time.

The arrests came in August. Coordinated, precise. London, Birmingham, High Wycombe. Twenty-four people picked up overnight. From the outside, it probably looked sudden. But I knew better. That kind of operation only happens when the window is closing.

And it was closing. They weren’t quite on planes yet but they weren’t far off either. Close enough that the decision was made: act now, or risk everything.

If they hadn’t… several aircraft could have been lost. Hundreds of lives. Maybe more.

Seven men were eventually convicted. The plot dismantled. And the legacy? Every time you stand at airport security, taking your liquids out of your bag that’s because of this.

Funny how life turns out.

One chapter you’re dealing with threats like that, or understanding the people who do. The next, you’re sweeping chimneys in quiet towns, chatting to homeowners about soot build-up and airflow.

But every now and then, something like this reminds you, you never really stop being who you were.

You just carry it differently.

Can’t Avoid It Again Rant -

April 2026

I was fully intending this month to avoid the subject of conflict in the world but one man’s folly has rendered that impossible. As I write we are in the second week of the US/Iran War. As we lived through the Cold War most of the second half of the 20th century so now the early decades of the 21st seem to be cripled by “The Hot Wars” so to speak.

Our Prime Minister was described as “not being Churchill.” An apt retort may well have been “And you Sir, are no Roosevelt!” We are in an unenviable position, in that we do not wish to alienate our long standing ally while at the same time not wishing to be part of an action that violates international law and which may unleash unimaginable suffering for the poor Iranian people, and create turmoil on the global scene. I have great sympathy for Starmer and would call on all in the UK, of whatever political hue, to talk quietly together with the aim of speaking with one clear voice. Let’s change the topic now.

I recently received my tax coding for the coming financial year. I believe I am a reasonably articulate man (Daphne would say verbose!) but HMRC language is not user friendly. The Untaxed Interest Figure is explained as such “The amount we have

included takes into account any Personal Savings Allowance you are entitled to.” “Takes into account” doesn’t actually clarify if the £1000 tax free allowance is included in the figure or not. My final tax code does not help me work whether it does or not. The explanation for the taxing or non taxing of the State Pension is equally unclear. One wonders if it is HMRC policy to obfuscate to a certain level so as to reduce the number of potential queries. If anyone reading can answer my question, I would be grateful. I can’t get an answer anywhere.

Finally, following the recommendation of our daughter, Daphne and I sat down to watch the film 13 Lives this weekend. It tells the story of the twelve young footballers and their coach who were trapped in a cave in Northern Thailand and their incredible survival and rescue. It is a magnificent film reminding us how much goodness there is in this world. A much needed reminder…

Dementia

There has been some interesting research on dementia, and some new scientists are now saying that up to 90% of cases may be avoided through lifestyle choices. So what lifestyle choices should we be thinking about?

Most are simple and don’t require major changes.

1. Have regular hearing checks.

After the age of 60, it’s recommended to have a hearing test every two years. Our brains rely heavily on incoming information, and much of it comes through hearing. When hearing declines gradually, we don’t always realise it, but the brain receives less stimulation, processes less information, and can start to slow down as a result.

2. Floss your teeth daily.

There is a well-established link between heart health and gum disease. Gum issues are often less obvious than people think—bleeding when you floss is a sign something isn’t right. Consistent daily flossing helps prevent gum disease, supports heart health, and improves gut microbiome function.

3. Incorporate exercise into your everyday routine.

This doesn’t mean going to the gym for an hour. Even walking for 15–30 minutes a day makes a big difference. I’ve been walking to and from work, and I’ve noticed my resting heart rate has gone down. Improving cardiovascular health benefits both heart and brain function.

If you feel able to, you can build on this base with jogging, running, cycling, or swimming. You don’t need to push yourself too hard—keeping the intensity low reduces injury risk while still improving overall cardio fitness.

4. Don’t over-focus on protein.

Protein is important, but most people already consume enough. Having protein in the morning can help reduce hunger throughout the day; natural yoghurt with chia seeds is a great option because it provides both protein and fibre.

5. Increase your fibre intake.

Around 95% of people in the UK don’t get enough fibre—many only consume about 10g per day. There is a strong link between gut health and brain health, so improving your gut biome can support cognitive function.

For example, one kiwi contains about 5g of fibre, and if you eat it with the skin (it feels odd at first, but you get used to it), you get around 10g— already close to doubling the average daily intake.

Overall, these changes are quite achievable. Walking takes some commitment, but the hearing tests and flossing are simple, essential habits that make a real difference.

First tasking for two crew of Burnham-on-Crouch RNLI

On Wednesday 4 March 2026, the volunteer crew of Burnhamon-Crouch RNLI was tasked in poor visibility to the aid of 11 people aboard a boat with engine failure.

At approximately 5.15pm the volunteer crew was tasked by the HM Coastguard to a 27 foot fishing vessel with 11 people on board, which had suffered engine failure whilst making their way back to Fambridge Yacht Haven from a day’s fishing expedition.

The weather was becoming increasingly difficult with a heavy fog descending throughout the afternoon. The charity's Atlantic 85 Tony and Robert Britt launched with visibility around 40 metres, noticeably worsening by the minute. HM Coastguard had informed the crew the casualty vessel had 11 people on board and insufficient shelter and supplies for the worsening weather situation.

Lifeboat crew Ian, Malcolm, David and Charlie were aboard the Tony and Robert Britt. This was the first shout for both David and Charlie who following many hours attending station and training were both declared recently safe on service.

The stricken vessel was located at anchor in the middle of the River Crouch between Bridgemarsh Marina and North Fambridge Yacht Haven, unable to progress any further due to engine failure. SAR Commander Ian, made a dynamic risk assessment. Points for Ian taken into account were: visibility was down to approximately 20m, the casualty vessel anchored in its current location was a hazard to other river users, the condition of the 11 people on board was deteriorating having exhausted supplies and little shelter on the vessel, the outcome was to take an alongside tow and recover them to the nearest safe haven.

An alongside tow is when the casualty vessel is tightly secured to the side of the charity's lifeboat instead of being towed at a distance behind it. An alongside tow is used when a high level of manoeuvrability is needed or in this case visibility of the casualty vessel.

Ian, SAR Commander said: ‘As a first shout this was a simple tasking, made very interesting by the very poor visibility, putting the crews navigation and radar skills to the test.’

Having taken the casualty vessel into the nearest safe haven the crew of the Atlantic 85, Tony and Robert Britt slowly made its way back to the Burnham Yacht Harbour relying on the radar, plotter and local knowledge to return to station safely at approximately 7.30pm.

David said: ‘It was exciting to finally get the opportunity to put all of my training into action on a live incident, I am relieved that said training prepared me well for the task at hand. I feel lucky to be in the position to be able to help those in trouble.’
