Emotions stir at the Wall Moving tribute draws steady stream of visitors to Swinomish Casino By K ATHY REED

o say the American Veterans Traveling Tribute makes a lasting impression would be an understatement. To give an accurate count of the number of people who made the trek to see the AVTT Traveling Wall, an 80 percent scale model replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C., during its recent stop at the Swinomish Casino in Anacortes, would be difficult. “We don’t have an actual count of the people who came to visit the memorial, but there was a steady stream of people from the opening ceremonies through today,” said casino marketing coordinator Justin Shank during Sunday’s closing ceremony. “A lot of them were here very late.” The traveling tribute, which also included several Cost of Freedom memorials and exhibits, was set up in the east end of the casino parking lot and was open for continuous viewing following the opening ceremony on Aug. 25 through noon on Sunday. “I’m overwhelmed to see the support and the number of people here today,” said casino general manager Mike Wootan during the opening program. “It hit me as I was looking at the wall that I know 10 or 12 people on this wall.” The opening ceremony included a joint Marine Corps and Navy Color Guard and the laying of Prisoner of War and American Gold Star Mothers’ wreaths, which were placed next to a field cross at the center of the wall. Because the tribute was on casino property, members of the Swinomish tribe added to the experience by performing a sacred blessing of the wall. Swinomish tribe

NAS Whidbey wins again for energy, water management

For the fourth time, Naval Air Station Whidbey Island has been recognized by the Secretary of the Navy for its continued commitment to energy and water conservation and management. “This award is evidence that Team Whidbey works together to cut energy consumption,” said Capt. Jay Johnston, NAS Whidbey Island commanding officer. “We, like any home owner or renter, pay utility costs, so it’s inherent upon us to spend taxpayer dollars wisely.” NAS Whidbey, Naval Base Kitsap, Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Keyport and Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility all achieved platinum level awards, which come

Members of Whidbey Island Radio Control Society, a club for aeronautics modeling, promised a great show last weekend at Whidbey Island Naval Outlying Field south of Coupeville — and they delivered in every way possible, according to families who attended the annual event. “What an awesome show,” said George Moen. “Very cool,” said Brandi Jensen, of Sultan. Coupeville resident Jarrett Fiedler was especially impressed. “I’ve wanted to come to this event forever,” he said. “There were far more planes here than I thought there would be.” There were 33 planes, with 29 pilot/owners, that participated in the 21st annual Jets Over Whidbey show, said Tom Berry, WIRCS secretary/treasurer. “We had people bring planes in from Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho, British Columbia and Alberta, Canada. This is one of the largest events of its kind on the west coast,” he said. Among the 33 models featured were U.S. Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Canadian aircraft, and more. One prominent Canadian pilot/owner at the event was Ronald

Dodd, president of the Model Aeronautics Association of Canada. Berry said that even though participants hail from different states and different countries, “the love of flying is what unites us.” Dave Phillips and his wife, Karen, from southern Calif., agreed. “I’ve been in aviation 51 years,” said Phillips, “and we try to come to Jets Over Whidbey every year. We have a great time up here with the friendly folks in the Northwest.” Phillips demonstrated his F-4 Phantom model with twin Cheetah engines. Some of the radio-controlled aircraft are intended to be authentic replicas of their full-sized counterparts, so their pilot/owners take great care in the building process. In flight some of the turbine-powered models attained near-vertical flight paths, soaring high above the runway. They rolled and looped mid-flight, at high rates of speed. Pilot/ owners were in control for the entire demonstration. Among those in attendance at Jets Over Whidbey 2011 were Mark Smith and his wife, Ruth, of Hot Springs Village, Ark. Mark serves as executive vice president of the Academy of Model Aeronautics and was the

guest speaker for the WIRCS awards banquet at the CPO Club Saturday evening. Smith offered highlights on the mission of the academy and its affiliated clubs such as WIRCS. The national organization seeks to be what Smith called, “the voice of the modeler” in Washington D.C., as they keep members updated on the regulatory environment. Yet from his remarks, it’s clear that model aviation functions as much more than just a part-time hobby for its proponents. “Our members have raised tens of thousands of dollars for charity,” said Smith. He mentioned Toys for Tots as one of the beneficiaries of the fundraisers, and said up to $800,000 in youth scholarships have been given out. “We are very much engaged in youth aviation as well,” said Smith. One way in which they encourage that goal is by offering free youth memberships. The success of those efforts was on full display over the weekend, as 16-yearold Alex Richmond of Gig Harbor gave a demonstration of his Bobcat. “I’ve been flying models about 10 years,” said Richmond. “I want to keep flying my whole life.” Richmond said he became

Mother nature made the event even better for those attending. “Our WIRCS club officers agree that this has been the best Jets Over Whidbey event in recent memory, and that certainly includes the weather, over which we have no control. “The attendance exceeded our expectations. We were especially delighted to see a lot more Navy people here this

year.” Berry attributed that increase to the extra publicity his group received at July’s Centennial of Naval Aviation celebration at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island. The WIRCS plans to fund this year’s event by auctioning off an exact model replica of a EA-18G Growler aircraft from Electronic Attack Squadron 129; proceeds will benefit WIRCS. Next year the WIRCS will host the event again the last weekend of August.

Buyer beware: Purchasing pet medications online

ny pet owner knows that prescription medications for pets can be expensive. Even the nonprescription trade name products for flea control can set you back quite a bit, so it’s not surprising that many consumers turn to the internet to try and save OR ETS money on these products. There are many internet AKE sites selling pet medications that represent legitiIEL mate, reputable pharmacies. Unfortunately, there DVM is a growing problem of counterfeit drugs worldwide that includes both human and veterinary products. A counterfeit medication or drug is a medication which is produced and sold with the intent to deceptively represent its origin, authenticity or effectiveness. A counterfeit drug may contain inappropriate quantities of the active ingredients (or none at all), it may contain ingredients that are not on the label (which may or may not be harmful), or it may be supplied with inaccurate or fake packaging and labeling. How big is the problem? Unfortunately, the biggest

problem with counterfeit drugs is that they are difficult to detect, investigate, quantify, or stop, so the quantity of counterfeit medications is difficult to determine. In 2003, the World Health Organization estimated that the annual earnings of counterfeit drugs were over $32 billion. By 2010 that estimate was up to $75 billion. And given the fact there is a considerable difference between the cost of manufacturing counterfeit medication and the price that counterfeiters charge, the problem is only growing. It’s an unfortunate fact drug counterfeiters can make more money than hard-drug traffickers, and they have less chance of going to prison. It is estimated somewhere between 5 and 10 percent of the veterinary medications sold online in Australia are counterfeit. This is significant because many of the online websites selling to U.S. pet owners are located in Australia. Most commonly these products are the common heartworm preventatives, flea products and anti-inflammatory medications. The figures for the U.S. are estimated to be about the same. A World Health Organization report indicated that at least 80 percent of the veterinary products sold in Africa do not meet international standards. This is of great concern to consumers because of the potential issue of drug residues in animal products from the livestock industry.

What can a pet owner do? • Order from a website that belongs to a Vet-VIPPS accredited pharmacy. Vet-VIPPS — the VeterinaryVerified Internet Pharmacy Practice Sites – is a voluntary accreditation program of the National Boards of Pharmacy (NABP). They give their approval to online veterinary pharmacies that comply with their requirements including federal and state licensing and inspection requirements. Go to their website www.nabp.net/pro grams/accreditation/vet-vipps and click on “Accreditation Programs” to find out if a pharmacy is Vet-VIPPS accredited. • Order from a pharmacy service that your veterinarian uses. These state-licensed internet pharmacies work directly with veterinarians to provide medications to clients while preserving the veterinary-client-patient relationship that a veterinarian needs to legally dispense drugs. And because the veterinarian does not have to buy or stock these medications they can pass those savings on to you. • If you find a medication online from an accredited pharmacy that has a lower price than your veterinarian, consider asking yours if they will match the price. Everett achieved gold awards, for energy programs that are considered very good to outstanding. Since 2007 every Northwest Region Naval installation has won a SECNAV Energy award in an ongoing effort to meet the energy reduction goals set by the president. “Congress mandated the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 requiring a 30 percent reduction by 2015 relative to a 2003 baseline. NAS Whidbey Island met that in 2010, and continues to find alternative resources to cut energy,” said Johnston. “The act also requires water consumption reduction by 2 percent annually on a 2007 baseline, which we are on track. I’m proud of our energy efforts, but it’s all our military, DoD civilians, and contractors who do their part which adds up to savings for us all.”

Plans underway for Military Appreciation Picnic The 10th annual Military Appreciation Picnic will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10 at Windjammer Park in Oak Harbor. The picnic is free and all are welcome to attend. There will be games, a rock climbing wall, bounce houses for youngsters and live music provided by el Colonel and Pay ‘N Full. The picnic is sponsored by the Oak Harbor Area Council of the Navy League, Naval Air Station Whidbey Island Morale, Welfare and Recreation and the city of Oak Harbor. Local businesses and the Oak Harbor Fire Department also pitch in.

Navy League to meet Tuesday After a summer break the Oak Harbor Area Council of the Navy League will meet again Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. at the Officers’ Club on Naval Air Station Whidbey Island. Guest speaker will be Capt. John Radka, chief staff officer of Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing 10. Equestrian Crossings (EqX), a local nonprofit organization which offers horsemanship activities to students of nearly all ages, abilities and disabilities, is in need of helpers. Volunteers are needed throughout lesson days to help prepare horses and assist students. Lessons will begin Sept. 13 and run through Nov. 4 at locations in Oak Harbor and Greenbank. Volunteer training is free and no experience is necessary. For convenience, training is offered five different times over a three-day period at two locations. What are your plans for Labor Day weekend?

My grocery store of choice recently underwent a reset. I’d forgotten about that until I did my shopping last weekend. I’m not sure if the shelves were replaced or if the new configuration just makes it look like they’re new. In any event, the store looks great. Not that it looked bad to begin with — it doesn’t matter what it is, whenever something gets a good straightening, it always looks better. I try it occasionally with my house, but it never seems to last very long. KATHY At any rate, I was unprepared REED when I went to the store last weekend, other than bringing my list, which I always write down in the order of where I vaguely remember things are positioned. As I said, I’d forgotten about the changes. Somewhere in my mind, I refused to accept that a reset might possibly mean a rearrangement. My error. Reset definitely means rearranged. Apparently I wasn’t the only shopper who was confused. We all met at the end of the aisles to direct one another and answer questions like “Are the paper towels with the toilet paper?” “No, I think they’re by the cleaning products.” While everyone took the changes in stride, I could kind of empathize with the gentleman who walked by cursing under his breath, even though I don’t know why he was cursing. In the end, everything turned out alright, it just took a little longer. The changes are logical when you think about them. I think the paper towels are by the cleaning products and salty snacks are by the drinks — genius! All of this will undoubtably make future excursions go more quickly and smoothly. But, alas, we are creatures of habit and change can sometimes be difficult to accept. I do have an advantage for next time, though — I’m pretty sure I know where they keep the paper towels and toilet paper. -Kathy Reed, editor

fatalities declined nationally and in 33 states. But not here. It rose 12.6 percent. Convenience shouldn’t trump safety. The need to get a vehicle home shouldn’t override common sense. There’s too much at risk: losing your license, your money, your freedom, maybe your life and/ or someone else’s. People need to think and plan about how they’ll get home before they drink. Afterwards, judgment is impaired as well as reaction time. So before you head out to that barbecue, picnic or party, choose your ride home — a taxi, a sober friend or NAS Whidbey’s Right Spirit Ride (914-7903). If you happen to see an impaired driver on the road, don’t hesitate to contact local law enforcement. And if you know someone who is about to drive or ride while impaired, help them make other arrangements. Don’t let the last summer holiday be your — or someone else’s — last summer holiday. Maybe we won’t repeat it.” Part of the closing ceremony included a warrior song in honor of all the veterans present and another blessing of the wall. “There were a lot of tears and sorrow while the Wall was here,” said Swinomish Casino marketing director Jumada Schwinden. “That has been lifted, so when the Wall travels on, the tears and sorrow won’t travel with it.” Schwinden said the casino is planning to host the traveling tribute again next year. Following the blessing, the colors were retired as “Taps” was played. A threevolley gun salute followed. “It’s very emotional,” Mitchell said of the memorial. “But as we say, it’s good medicine. It’s very healing.”
