About this section

Spring has finally come to Vashon, and soon summer will follow. With that in mind, The Beachcomber has published this annual guide to summer fun on the Island. In response to parents’ requests, we’re offering it earlier this year to make planning easier. While watching the clouds drift by is a great summer pastime, vacation time also allows kids to explore their interests and passions, whatever they might be — theater, dance, music, basketball or soccer, to name a few. All those possibilities and more are available on the Island in the summer months and are listed in the front section of this guide. And, because fall follows so quickly on the heels of summer, we have included a preschool guide here, too, so that families with the youngest students can plan ahead and find the school that best suits their needs. Come August, The Beachcomber will publish the fall issue of Island Child, with information about the public and private schools on the Island. But for now, we wish you a good summer and encourage Island families to partake of some of the many offerings you’ll find in the pages that follow. — Susan Riemer, section editor

Aruba Clay Camp

There are classic overnight camps as well as camps that focus on horses, backpacking, windsurfing and sailing and archery.

Kids will learn the names of many native plants and animals and how Vashon plants can be used for food and healing. The camp atmosphere is non-competitive, allowing group bonding and encouraging individual empowerment. Several camps are offered each summer but fill quickly; registration by March is encouraged. Each day includes individual foot skills, technical drills, tactical practices, small-sided games, coached scrimmages and a daily World Cup tournament. Coaches also focus on selfdiscipline, good sportsmanship and respect for others and the game. A camp for Island soccer teams will be offered Aug. 22 to 26.

Circus Arts Camp

Juggling, trapeze, tightrope, unicycle, stiltwalking, tumbling, acro-balance, cloud swing, lyra (aerial hoop) and clowning are the most prominent arts taught at camp, but others will be included as well. Stretching and conditioning are also part of the daily routine.

Vashon is horse country for many Islanders, including these girls riding at Fish Bowl Farm. This summer kids can go to horse camp at the three camps listed on this page as well as at Camp Sealth.

Cunningham has more than 50 years of experience with horses. Students will have lessons, learn games, go on trail rides and more. They can use the farm horses or ride their own. Camps are limited to six to eight kids per week.

The group will travel to Egypt through their imaginations to learn about the art that decorated the walls of pyramids and buildings of ancient times. Jack and the Dragon Puppet Show

2 p.m. Thursday, July 28, in the Ober Park Performance Room Ages 3 and older The Oregon Shadow Theater Watch presents this Appalachian fairy tale come to life as Jack’s mother sends him out in the world to seek his fortune, and along the way Jack kills seven flies with one whack. The king and Princess Polly could use someone to deal with troublesome varmints so they call on Jack. The show is performed in a dark room and is not appropriate for very young children.

Tales from a Small Planet

Vashon Kids Summer Enrichment

Ages: Entering kindergarten (must be 5 years of age) through entering sixth grade Dates: Weekly summer camps from June 21 through Aug. 23 Time: 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Location: Chautauqua Elementary Cost: Full time is $185 per week; four days per week is $170 and three days per week is $155. Make a splash with Vashon Park District Vashon Park District offers an abundance of summer fun. The Kayak Center will open on May 27, and the Vashon Pool will open for the season on May 28. In June, there will be more aquatic events to enjoy. Middle and high school students interested in rowing can try it out from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 4, at Jensen Point and again from 1 to 4 p.m. June 18, when the annual Water Daze celebration makes kayaking and rowing free for the whole community. The low-tide festival will be a few weeks later — from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 2, at Point Robinson. Summer also brings outdoor music, and the first summer concert will be at 7 p.m. June 23, at Ober Park, when Rouge will play French café music from Edith Piaf to Pink Martini.
