BREWERS TASTE TEST For those who love a good cup of brew, here’s a chance to select the blend we will use at the Center for the next six months. The Test will start with a free tour and demonstration at Honeymoon Bay Café on Tuesday, April 5 at 1:00 pm. Mike will conduct the tour and share the over-all history and roasting of coffee, the different flavors and grinding. A real brewer’s education. Tastings will be offered. With over 21 blends to choose from, those attending will decide the five blends to be tested at the Center on April 6 & 8 from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm. Brewers Taste Tickets will cost $1.00 per day and entitle you to taste all the coffee you want, vote on your favorite and be entered in a drawing for a special gift basket. Home safety and firearms familiarization

s your home safe? How about door locks; window locks; exterior lighting or out of control landscaping? Presentation will cover the importance of having a plan. Basic firearms safety will be covered. A selection of different firearms will be displayed. The effects of firearms and things to consider when keeping a firearm in the home for security, types of ammunition, firearm selection, and means of safe storage will be discussed. There will be an opportunity to dispose of any old ammunition you’ve not been able to get rid of. Retired Island County Sherriff’s Department Detectives and Firearms Instructors Robert Clark and Errol Ortego will conduct the seminar, Monday, April 4 at 1:00 pm. A princess is born
THE SHORTEST DISTANCE “Laughter is the shortest distance between two people.”
BY ROXANN DUNN-TERRY With the Royal Wedding just around the corner, Princess Fever is rampant. Everyone wants to know Everything about Kate Middleton. It’s not just every day that a commoner becomes a Princess. I wish Jane Austen were here to give the commentary. No one could approach this with more Sense & Sensibility or with more Pride and Prejudice than our very own Miss Jane. (I am an Austen fan and I’ve read all her books – not just watched the movies – and my Bucket List does have a visit to England to see her birth place.)
I may not know all the particulars of Kate but I can shed some light on the upbringing of an American Princess. First, all little girls are born as Princesses. Doesn’t matter her lineage, her fortune, her consequence or connections. She is a Royal at birth whether her father was a stable hand or Baron. That’s how it works in America my British friends. (I am part Brit, my grandmother was born in England and crossed the pond at the age of 12.) I want to describe one particular Princess’s life. My granddaughter, Her Highness Miss Valerie. Miss Valerie comes from a middle class kingdom – The Terryshire. Her immediate family consists of grandparents King Volunteer (well it is his castle) and Queen Nana. Her mother is Royal Princess Beth. Her father is Sir Ivan the Absent. Her uncle is Heir Apparent Prince Danny of New Hampshire. There are other various Lords and Ladies in distant kingdoms. She is daily reminded of how greatly she is loved but she is not the Center of the World, as she knows
it. Nothing brings greater offense than a spoilt Princess. She is taught to say please and thank-you, to be kind and gentle to all living things, to share her chocolate, to say her prayers to invoke God’s blessings, to keep the Royal Palace picked up of playthings, and to take two bites of what she is served before refusing any more. She is learning her numbers and letters. In her infancy, Queen Nana would remind her that 2:00 am was not the time to request an audience with the Queen nor was it the time to watch Barney, as she was rocked. Miss Valerie has a Princess Bath daily and is starting to out grow the Princess Rest (nap). She has been informed that Queen Nana still requires a Princess Rest on Sunday afternoons – that’s how you become Queen. Otherwise, it’s “Off with your head!” Her Ladies In Waiting are Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Belle, Rapunzel, Jasmine, Ariel and Tinkerbelle. She knows that she must be 16 (like Sleeping Beauty) before she may be in the

I don’t think a moat can be dug deep enough, enough Dragons slain or boiled oil ready to pour on the enemy to protect our Princes or Princesses. It takes the whole village to be alert and not fall asleep in today’s world. Bless their precious little hearts.

The Home Health Care & Hospice of Whidbey General Hospital is seeking volunteers to visit with patients and families. Â Volunteers are trained by our staff and equipped for this rewarding work. Â The work may include providing respite for the caregiver, companionship for the patient, light housework and meal preparation, or running errands for the family. Â The work may also involve being with patients at the end of their life which is a great privilege. Â Volunteers typically spend two to fours hours a week on their assignment. Â Monthly meetings offer on-going education, sharing of case assignments, and good fellowship. Oak Harbor Hearing Aid Service -
A non-profit group, offers a variety of support services including adult day services, care giving training/courses, a caregiver resource library, support group opportunities and more. Caregivers Cove provides services for adults, 18 years and older, who have chronic conditions such as Alzheimer’s or related dementias, stroke, multiple sclerosis, are developmentally delayed or have other issues. The program emphasizes support of adult clients in need as well as their caregivers who are often tasked with 24/7 care responsibilities. Caregivers’ Cove has just received an additional $5,000 grant for client scholarships, bringing the grand total to $15,000 to date. Think there’s no way you would qualify? Many have been pleasantly surprised to find out they do! They are offering one week of day respite at 50% off, no commitment required. The cost of services is income dependent, with rates determined on a “sliding scale� so as to allow those with limited incomes. Services are offered Monday through Friday, 8 am to 4 pm. Housekeeping with a smile Pam Gaimari starts her day early at Harbor Tower Village. Pam’s great smile starts gracing the residents as she helps with their morning breakfast. Pam knows everyone’s favorites by heart and is always one step ahead. She then starts her daily housekeeping routine with that same enthusiasm. Pam has been at Harbor Tower for over three years. Residents are always looking to Pam as a resource. If she does not have the answer she knows exactly where to get it. She is a whiz with electronics and our cable system as well. Pam does a great job helping the residents keep their apartments clean and ready for visitors. Pam can always be found volunteering at special events at Harbor Tower.
