ob Nielsen of Oak Harbor made two very important decisions last October. First, he decided to join the Whitehead-Muzzall post 7392 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, located on Goldie Road in Oak Harbor. Then he decided to buy not just one, but two raffle tickets for a chance to win a motorcycle. Both decisions appear to have been good ones. In a drawing held March 26, nearly six months after buying his tickets, Nielsen found out he was the winner. He was presented with his brand new Harley Davidson motorcycle last Friday evening, and while there was a lot of joking and good humor at the award ceremony, it was no April Fool’s prank. “A couple of fellas asked me if I was interested in buying a ticket for $20, and I said, ‘OK, I’ll take a ticket,’” Nielsen recounted. “I’d never bought a $20 dollar raffle ticket before, so I decided to buy another one. It was the second ticket that won – number 1-5-7-7.” Nearly all the members of the local post’s new motorcycle group, the VFW Riders, were on hand at Friday’s presentation, where Nielsen was handed the title and keys to his new Harley. Not a bad outcome for a $40 investment. “It was a damn good investment,” Nielsen said while perched on the saddle of his new bike. “I’ve never had the money to afford a bike like this. It’s just incredible. It’s beyond belief.” In addition to his new bike, Nielsen has the satisfaction of knowing the money he spent went to a good cause. Half the proceeds from the raffle were divided between the Wounded Warrior Project and the Fisher House Foundation, which provides a place for military families to stay while a loved one is hospitalized.

For anyone who regularly ships care packages to family or friends serving abroad, you know it gets spendy. That’s where an Oak Harbor business can lend a hand. “Fill the box, address it, and we’ll pay the postage,” said Jim Haddon, manager of Burley Funeral Chapel on SE Ely Street. For nearly four years, Haddon and office manager Cathy George have overseen their company’s “pieces of home” project. Folks fill medium, flat-rate, priority boxes from the U.S. Postal Service with items, address the box, fill out the necessary customs forms, and bring it to the funeral chapel. George and Haddon take it from there. “We try to mail them at least once a week,” said George, who has had to bring as many as 100 boxes to the post office at one time. “ My longest receipt stretched from the floor to the top of my head.” “We love it,” agreed Haddon. “We see wives, girlfriends and

That’s $9 they can put toward another expense or spend filling the box.” In fact, the cost to ship a medium flat-rate, priority box is $10.95. Haddon estimates the chapel mails 400 to 500 boxes a year. Holidays such as Christmas and Valentine’s Day see the

heaviest volume, but packages come in steadily throughout the year. The cost to the company, said Haddon, is worth it. “We believe in putting back into the community,” he explained. “It feels good to do something for folks that makes a difference. We are honored, privileged, to do so.” While the funeral chapel never

puts its return address on the boxes, a feedback form included inside the box does list contact information. It was enough for one recipient to track George down and thank her when he got home. “He and his wife brought me a pie,” she said, blinking back tears. The feedback keeps George excited about the program. “I

Anyone separating or retiring from the Navy and looking for employment may be interested in a couple of upcoming classes at WorkSource Whidbey in Oak Harbor. A workshop scheduled from 9 to 11 a.m. April 14 will focus on the Boeing Company’s application process. WorkSource staff will share resume tricks and tips to successfully apply. Boeing expects to hire 5,000 new employees in 2011 to fill its upcoming plane orders. Another workshop set to take place at 9 a.m. April 26 will explain how to prepare for a job fair. Those attending will find out what to expect when attending, how to talk to employers and tips on how to “work” a job fair. The next WorkSource Whidbey

job fair will be held at the Oak Harbor Elks Club from noon to 4 p.m. on May 5. The workshops are free and are open to anyone. Those interested in attending are encouraged to pre-register by calling WorkSource Whidbey at 675-5966.

Search and Rescue to share its secrets If you’ve ever wondered how Naval Air Station Whidbey Island’s Search and Rescue team does what it does, here’s your chance to find out. The team will reveal its secrets during a program at 3 p.m. April 21 at the Oak Harbor Library. Team members will share the capabilities of the MH-60S Knighthawk helicopter, along with what’s involved in mountain search and rescue operations and medical evacuations. The program is free and

VFW essay contests open to local youth Veterans of Foreign Wars wants local youth to get a head start on its upcoming essay contests for children in grades three through 12. The youth essay contest is for children in grades three through 5. The theme is “What is an American?” Youth in grades six through eight may enter the Patriots Pen contest by writing an essay on the theme “Are you proud of your country?” The Voice of Democracy Scholarship Program is the contest for youth in grades nine through 12. The theme for this program is “Is there pride in serving in our military?” The entry deadline for all contests is Nov. 1. about all this funding that they always have to ask for. That’s how I look at it. It’s just more money that

they don’t have to spend on other things. They can take that money and spend it on school supplies.� Watts and Howe also shared Layton’s enthusiasm for community service, as well as something much simpler: an escape from boredom. “I’m here to have fun and get out of the house,� Watts explained, as all three shared a laugh. “It’s kind of boring here, so...� “I volunteered to do this to help out the community,� Howe agreed, continuing, “and to get out of the house, and do something different.� The three Navy personnel laughed, talked and worked side by side, filling up a trash bag with debris from the learning garden. Principal Day worked nearby, kneepads over jeans as she ripped up weeds and directed volunteers. “It looks so much better,� she said, smiling. “It’s 100 percent better. The kids are going to be very excited.�

irst, let me say thank you. Thanks for showing your support by picking up the first issue of the Whidbey Crosswind. If you’re reading this, thank you for giving it another try. When I said the Crosswind is meant to be a paper that serves this community, I meant it. While our focus is on all things Navy and related to the military, we want to include what happens off the base as well. Oak Harbor and the surrounding area is a great mix of active duty military personnel and their families, retirees and their families, base employees and their families. All of us KATHY shop, eat, relax, worship, work REED or go to school here. We are all connected in some fashion to Naval Air Station Whidbey Island – whether directly or through family and acquaintances. I mentioned last week I want to infuse Crosswind with the voice of our community. We need you! We need people of experience to share their views and offer their opinion on what’s going on around Oak Harbor, at NAS Whidbey and on Whidbey Island. We need the wisdom and perspective of people who have served their country to comment on what’s happening in Washington, D.C., Japan, Libya or here at home and give us their take on why those events are important to all of us. I encourage you to think about writing a weekly or monthly column for us. I think about all the families here that come and go from Oak Harbor on a regular basis. There are newlyweds who have to settle into new surroundings while learning not only to deal with being married, but being married to someone in the military. Bowl for Kids’ Sake Big Brothers Big Sisters of Island County is looking for teams to participate in the 13th annual Bowl For Kids’ Sake events coming up next month on Whidbey Island. The fundraising events will take place at Oak Bowl in Oak Harbor on May 7 and at Ebey Bowl in Coupeville on May 14. Here’s how it works: A team captain puts together a team totaling five bowlers. Teams choose to bowl on either of the dates. Each bowler is encouraged to raise a minimum of $100 to support Big Brothers Big

Sisters of Island County, and to be eligible for the BFKS T-shirt. Organizers say anyone can put together a team, such as Navy squadrons or commands, businesses, service groups, police and firefighters, student groups and friends and families. The agency can also help connect those interested in bowling who aren’t part of a team. The annual bowling event is one of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Island County’s largest annual fundraisers. VFW | FROM PAGE 1 “I knew we couldn’t bake enough cookies and banana bread to do any real good,” Cahill said. “I decided we needed to ‘go big or go home.’ We went big.” Cahill is a prime example of what the VFW is about. Her husband, Army Sgt. Stephen Cahill, was a career military man who served his country for 34-and-a-half years. He suffered a traumatic head injury in Iraq on his last tour of duty and came home for treatment. “When he came home from Iraq as an injured soldier, the military was just setting up the Wounded Warrior Battalion,” Cahill said. “The first place he took me when he got home was Fisher House. He took me there because he knew I did a lot of fundraising with the VFW and the place needs a lot of help.” Sgt. Cahill died of a brain aneurism three years ago. Deborah found strength through her connection to the VFW. “They’re my family. If they weren’t here when my husband died, I don’t know what I’d have done,” she said. “I got calls from someone every day to check on me. And they did that the whole time he was deployed, too. [VFW members] take care of their own and their families.” Local post commander Pete Sill said that is exactly why the VFW exists. “Our mission is ‘to serve the living while honoring the dead,’” Sill said. “If people were to come in and ask about our programs, I’m sure they would be impressed

The dollar amount of disability claims brought in for local veterans last year alone is staggering. “The two volunteer service officers here brought in $800,000 in claims for disability last year,” said Keith Wooldrige, commander of VFW District 15. “We serve

our vets, absolutely. They can be 85 years old and come in 60 years after serving to apply for disability benefits, or they can be 21.” While helping veterans with disability claims is a large part of what the VFW does, the local post and auxiliary are involved with other programs as well, such as the National Home for Children and the United Services Organization, and a multitude of other national programs. Local posts help support them through fundraising efforts like the motorcycle raffle. But the VFW doesn’t just support national programs. Post 7392 has adopted Goldie Road and Ault Field Road to Highway 20 for a monthly cleanup. The post will also loan medical equipment to anyone who asks, veteran or not. Wooldrige and Sill say gaining new members is the biggest challenge they face. The motorcycle raffle, which was held at posts across the state, was a big boost. “The best part of the whole raffle was watching the VFW posts and their auxiliaries pull together as one to achieve a wor-

thy goal,” Cahill said. “And we recruited 500 new VFW members.” Another challenge facing the VFW is overcoming the perception that the post is just another bar. “Most VFW’s don’t have bars,” said Wooldrige. “Out of the five posts in District 15, only two have bars.” “The bar is just a quirk of membership and is separate from any official VFWsponsored events,” Sill said. “What we do is behind the scenes and not really visible to the average citizen. We are trying to get new members to realize they are not joining to be able to sit at the bar, but to assist in the administering of the various programs.” Sill has been the commander of the Whitehead-Muzzall post since 2009. He will be stepping down as the leader when his term ends June 30, although he plans to remain an active member. His advice to the next commander? “Stay with our mission – that’s supporting our veterans,” he said.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance office is up and running for 10 more days at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island. Retired Capt. Roger Pierce said as many as 30-40 volunteers have helped active duty sailors, dependents, family members and retirees with their taxes and will continue to help until April 18, this year’s tax deadline. Tax preparation is completely free and filed online so sailors can get their returns within two weeks. Since it opened its office at NAS Whidbey on Jan. 18, VITA has helped about 1,757 people save approximately $4 million. Pierce expects to help well over 2,000 people by April 18. Volunteers have helped young sailors of 18 years of age, along with Navy retirees in their 80’s. Pierce said at least half of them are young sailors. All are affiliated with the Navy.

VITA volunteers are available Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. They are located in the Navy Operation Support Command Building, (Bldg. 2793) or call them at 257-5952. VITA has been serving people since 1995 and Pierce said an indispensable part of the office’s success are the retired volunteers. Time volunteers spend helping people ranges anywhere from 15 minutes to several hours. The cornerstone of the NAS Whidbey office consists of Pierce, Tom Glenn and Tom Ford. They have been here right from the start. Pierce is the IRS expert, having prepared tax returns for 10 years – six professionally and four as a VITA volunteer. All the volunteers are professionally trained by the IRS and are certified tax preparers.

planned activities are a great educational tool. “You’ve got to remember the Navy is a pretty transient society. There are always new people coming in and the old ones leave,” Brewer said. “It’s about educating people. It kind of focuses people’s minds on the direction NAS Whidbey would like to go.” Besides the kickoff held Tuesday, Earth Month activities will include the so-called “Dumpster Diving” event starting at 9 a.m. April 13. Dumpster diving involves picking six to eight dumpsters from around the base, Brewer said. Teams of volunteers pull everything out of the dumpsters and sort the contents by whether it’s recyclable, can be composted or is trash. Then everything is weighed in order to get an idea of how much material in the dumpster could have been disposed of differently. At the Navy Recycle Center on Tuesday, Brewer was joined for the kickoff by Cmdr. Michael Dysart, the Public Works Officer for NAS Whidbey Island. Dysart spoke a few minutes about Earth Day. “Earth Day is about awareness of the environment,” Dysart said. “When it started on April 22, 1970, it energized America to become a better place and people responded. The Republicans, Democrats, rich, poor, farmers, hikers and labor leaders all responded.” But there is still more to do, he said. Events like those planned this month can help.

Imagine Oak Harbor without the Coast Guard Auxiliary. What Coast Guard Auxiliary, you might wonder? For starters, the approximately 80 volunteer Coast Guard Auxiliary officers that gathered at the Oak Harbor Marina and Skagit Valley College this past weekend for the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary District 13 Great Northern Area Training, or GNATS, as it’s called. They came from Washington, Oregon and Idaho to learn

In addition to boat safety inspections, where Coast Guard Auxiliary members check to see if boaters have proper flares, spark arrestors, bilge pumps and running lights, etc. Classes on public education, navigation, vessel inspections and others are offered, and it’s virtually free. There is a small fee to cover books and other public education costs. Richard Coons, District Captain in the Auxiliary for the Northern Area said they can stay busy as volunteers. “Some of us give thou-

sands of hours, some hundreds,” Coons said. “We keep track of our hours and they are sent to Congress via the Coast Guard and the Coast Guard is credited toward their budget. Last year the Coast Guard saved millions of dollars and were credited 644,498 hours. “We do everything that the Coast Guard does except law enforcement,” Coons added. Nationally, the Coast Guard Auxiliary has about 32,000 men and women civilian volunteers who annually donate their time doing vessel safety checks, public education courses, search and rescue, maritime domain awareness operations and marine safety. In Oak Harbor on Saturday, they taught classes about operations, human resources, communications, marine science and computer systems to other auxiliary members. There were sessions on boat inspection and repair both days and a member of the state department of Fish and Wildlife taught a class on invasive species. Auxiliary, said training volunteers get is equivalent to Coast Guard training. The Auxiliary even trains regular members of the Coast Guard. “For example, a 21-yearold active duty Coast Guard kid who comes from the Bronx and we send him out to Neah Bay, Washington. We mentor him and work with him to bring him up to active duty standards in the water,” he said. “We go out with Coast Guard boats and offer our boats so the new kids can experience boarding or rafting up to a boat or towing a boat before the real event happens.” Coons said the Auxiliary boats range from big inboards to little kayaks, which are great for going around marinas and checking out shallow draft areas. As to why they do it – go through the meetings, pay for the uniforms, go to classes and teach search and rescue for free – the answers are numerous. Some say they just want to stay connected to the water and the people who go out on it. Others say they want to help the Coast Guard, that it’s a good organization that deserves their help. Richard Coons said it has to do with people. “I believe in serving my community and my country,” he said, then went off to check on a class.

Hal Johnson On December 8, 1941 the USS Warden set sail to patrol the Hawaiian Islands for Japanese submarines. After patrolling for a week The USS Warden took convoys of ships to the Christmas Islands near the equator. Their first engagement after Pearl Harbor was the Coral Sea Battle. During this engagement the USS Lexington sank. Hal and his shipmates picked up the survivors and took them to New Caledonia. Little did Hal know that 70 years later at Harbor Tower Village he would be eating his meals with one of the survivors of the USS Lexington, Joe Malsom. It took all of two meals together for the two to put together their amazing connectionwhat are the odds??

The USS Warden rushed back to Pearl Harbor after the Coral Sea Battle. The crew did not know yet, but the Japanese code had been broken.

They loaded up with ammunition and stores the next day and escorted the USS Enterprise to Midway. The breaking of the Japanese code told the United States that the next planned attack was going to be north of the Hawaiian Islands at Midway. Three carriers, destroyers and cruisers intercepted the Japanese and The Battle of Midway began.

During this battle The United States suffered a number of losses. The USS Yorktown was severely hit and sank. The USS Enterprise launched all of its planes during the attack and not one pilot returned. That night the whole task force lit itself up in case any pilots had survived and were still looking for the convoy. Unfortunately, no one found their way that evening. Next it was back to Pearl Harbor and a well deserved week of liberty. After the week of rest and relaxation Hal was headed back out to sea to an undisclosed location........ BREMERTON — She began her Navy career at Officer Candidate School in Rhode Island. She went on to the Navy Diving and Salvage Training Center. There, she was only one of two females in the class of 15 students. “There were times I wanted to quit,”

said Darlene Iskra. Her one fellow female classmate kept her going, saying, “‘You aren’t quitting because I’m not staying here by myself.’” Following diving training, Iskra enrolled in the Surface Warfare Officers School. There she learned about navigating and piloting a ship. She was assigned to her first ship in December 1980, as the diving officer onboard the USS Hector, a Navy repair ship. She attained the rank of lieutenant, then hit a roadblock. At the time, the Navy allowed women to serve on non-combat ships. Due to the Navy’s hierarchical rankings, and Iskra’s standing, she had to go to an on-shore

She wasn’t happy about it, and other women in her situation left the Navy. “In the mid-1980s, the Navy realized if they wanted to keep women, they needed to give women a viable career path,” Iskra said. “They opened a whole new set of ships that they suddenly determined were non-combatants.” Iskra pushed to get reassigned to a ship. She felt that staying on shore was causing her to fall behind her peers. “Once they opened the ships, I realized that some day I could become commander of one,” Iskra said. “But I had to actually be on a ship to do that.”

Darlene Iskra has authored two books: “Women in the United States Armed Forces: Contemporary Military, Strategic and Security Issues� (Praeger Publishers, 2010) and “Breaking Through the Brass Ceiling� (VDM Publishing, 2008)

In command Iskra was back at sea in 1984. Six years later, she became the first female to command a Navy ship – USS Opportune, a rescue and salvage ship. Iskra and the USS Opportune were deployed overseas during Desert Storm. “It was a responsibility I did not take lightly,� Iskra said. “I thought a lot about how I would react if we were attacked.� Iskra said her promotion to commander caused a lot of jealousy, especially from her superiors. During her first evaluation as commander, she was ranked last in a squadron of five. Iskra was confused; no one else had been deployed to a war zone. And her ship had passed all of its inspections. Why the low ranking? Iskra recalls her boss telling her, “You are a woman. It won’t hurt you. You’ll have other opportunities.� “I was mad! But there was nothing I could do about it,� Iskra said. “You can’t impugn the motives of your superior. He gave me all A’s, so theoretically I didn’t have a negative evaluation. But being ranked fifth of five was negative. I should have been ranked first or second.�

McSally was an Air Force combat fighter pilot who had been stationed in Saudi Arabia during the Gulf War. In Saudi Arabia, women in the Air Force were required to wear an abaya – a traditional head-to-toe garment worn by Muslim women – when they went off base. Not only were Air Force women told to wear the abaya, they were also instructed to abide by the local customs on how women should act in public. Women weren’t allowed to drive and had to sit in the back seat. They had to walk behind the men. McSally objected to the requirements, primarily because she considered herself a Christian woman and didn’t want to wear Muslim dress. “My take on it was more secular,� Iskra said. “It’s undermining her authority as an officer. Here she is supposed to be leading these men and she has to dress in the abaya and walk behind them?� Iskra brought this issue to Cantwell’s attention. She and Sen. Bob Smith of New Hampshire co-sponsored an amendment to the Defense Authorization Bill. The amendment passed and forbade the Defense Department from requiring
