NEW YEAR . NEW YOU.

Setting goals to make a difference in one’s life BY ANDY NYSTROM anystrom@bothell-reporter.com

There comes a time when even Dr. Brett Daniel must heed his own advice. The 36-year-old family medicine physician at Bothell’s Pacific Medical Center often consults with his patients about eating healthy, losing weight and grasping onto a positive attitude. Now, it’s Daniel’s moment in the spotlight, he says with a laugh. “I’m going on vacation (to Hawaii) in February and I have to get back in a swimsuit with my wife,” he said with a smile in his Canyon Park office last Friday afternoon. “The two of us have agreed not to have sweets until we go — break the habit of having something sweet every day, like chocolate here and a cookie there. “I try and I fail just like everybody else. I fall off the wagon and get back on a lot.” Daniel is set to succeed, he’s sure of it, but like the advice the doctor offers his patients, he wants to do it the right way. When people start exercising, eating healthier and drinking more water, their whole lifestyle changes and they gain

confidence, as well, he said. “I’m a role model for some of these patients and I have to walk the walk and talk the talk or I’m kind of a hypocrite,” Daniel said. “I’m often inspired by my patients, for sure. I say, ‘Tell me how you did it,’ and I’ll share their story with other patients.” But first, there must be hard work and success before celebration. One of the things he notices is that people make their goals too broad: I want to lose weight, I want to be rich, I want to eat healthier, for example. Daniel says those goals aren’t focused and people need to put together an “action plan” in order to build up to the grand change they’re hoping for. In losing weight, do they want to eat differently, exercise more or combine the two? Daniel feels walking at a specific time during the week will work, and taking longer strolls on the weekend is a bonus. “Keep track on a chart, have your wife check it, and ‘If I don’t do it, then I have to make dinner Sunday night,’” he said. A crucial way for men to achieve their goals is by

competing with their buddies for the top spot in the weightloss game. For example, while keeping track of their Weight Watchers results, “If (they’re) in it with other people, it seems to be more of a supportive environment — competition is kind of their social support,” Daniel said. On the women’s side, a walking group or an exercise group will provide the social atmosphere needed to talk to each other about how they’re doing and the things that they’re struggling with, he added. Breaking out of people’s previous schedule is the hardest step, but once the goals are set and the change begins to show little by little, people get excited about what they’re doing and how far they can make it, Daniel said. “When you prove you have the willpower to overcome something you didn’t think you could do, that builds confidence so you do other changes you weren’t sure about,” said Daniel, noting that can apply to everything in one’s life. “As you start to be healthier, you start to feel healthier and that kind of snowballs into other things.”

Dr. Brett Daniel chats with pediatrician Akiko Hall about an upcoming staff meeting in the Pacific Medical Center lunchroom in Bothell last Friday. ANDY NYSTROM, Bothell-Kenmore Reporter

Train for a local 5K with a great cause By Betsy Geib Special to the Reporter

Sam, 11, crosses the finish line in 1 hour, 4 minutes at the 2010 Can Do 5K/10K. Betsy GeIb PHOTO

The Can Do 5K/10K in Bothell is just 10 weeks away. Whether you are a first-time runner, an experienced racer or a person with a disability, the Can Do 5K/10K is a great way to start the New Year with healthy habits. Register for this inclusive event and run side by side with people who face the challenges of living with a disability with perseverance, joy and a desire to be a part of the community.

If this is your first time to participate in a 5K, here are some tips to help you stay on track. 1. Train or race with others. You are much less likely to miss a workout if someone else is counting on you to show up. Get together a group of friends or find a local running group. Northshore YMCA, Everyday Athlete and Eastside Runners all offer group runs. Northwest Runner offers a complete list of group runs in the Puget Sound region.

2. Utilize training plans. There are many free training plans online. Check out these sites: www.jeffgalloway.com/training/5k.html and www.mayoclinic.com/ health/5k-run/SM00061. 3. Crosstrain. Try swimming, yoga or cycling on your off days. Crosstraining utilizes different muscle groups, decreases the potential for injury and helps eliminate tedium with your running workouts. 4. Track your progress. There is momentum in seeing your distances grow or your times fall each week. There are numerous free workout log programs on the Web. 5. Reward yourself. After a workout, reward yourself with an extra long shower or your favorite food. Acknowledge and celebrate each time you complete a workout. 6. Have fun. Load your iPod with your favorite music, leave your worries behind, embrace the weather and enjoy the rhythm of your breathing and stride. Meet the challenge of the New Year by choosing to set a goal to complete the Can Do on March 26. To register, visit www. cando5k.org.

Therefore, spaying less tax. Taking into account the added tax savings, you can probably give more to your retirement account and only notice an insubstantial difference in take-home pay. Not surprisingly, the financial experts also talked about dumping debt. “There’s something to be said for paying cash,” Starman asserted. Livingston suggests having automatic payments set up on your credit cards making those payments hassle free and reducing the temptation to pay less. As they talked about various approaches to saving and investing, both Starman and Livingston said reviewing where you are financially and where you want to go is critical. Starman talked about re-evaluating your goals to make sure they are realistic. Livingston believes January is the best time to review your finances since end-of-the-year statements can give you a handy snapshot. He also talked about keeping in mind the difference between “needs,” “wants” and “wishes” when doing your financial planning. “Needs” are food and a roof. “Wants” might include paying your child’s college tuition. (Livingston pointed out there are grants and loans that help solve that problem.) “Wishes” might be a motorcycle. Decide what goes into what column and plan your spending and saving accordingly. As for investing, Starman

is convinced the recession is on its way out. She said to let your tolerance for risk be your guide when it comes to investing, adding there is nothing wrong with putting your money into old stand-by stocks like Coca-Cola or utilities. She warned against fads, following the herd to whatever stock or investment is suddenly hot. For his part, Livingston said those who stuck with the market, even through the hard times, probably ended up in better shape than those who bailed. He warned against day trading and watching too much TV, terming some so-called financial news “financial porn” that only creates needless panic. Though Livingston said it might seem like an unabashed pitch, both he and Starman suggested that if you get stuck in planning your finances, get some professional help. “I look on what I do as educating,” Starman said, adding many people just don’t have the time to become fluent in finances. Livingston said there are Web sites — like mint. com and finra.org — that can guide you to an acceptable and affordable investment adviser. Both Livingston and Starman had plenty of other tips to offer. Starman said one priority is don’t panic, don’t over-think things. You’re never going to find that perfect balance between savings and spending, she said. But Starman also added that you don’t have to. “In the end, it all works out for most people,” she said.

Evergreen Medical Center is coming to Redmond in March When the new Evergreen Medical Center in Redmond opens its doors at the Bella Bottega shopping center on March 21, it will already feel familiar to the people of Redmond. Like every Evergreen facility, the new medical center was designed with patients in mind. The new facility brings together in one place at the right time, just the care that is most often needed: primary care from the combined practices of the physicians of Evergreen Medical Group — Redmond and Family Medicine of Redmond; and, for the first time, emergency care. These core practices will be supported by a full-service medical-imaging center and an on-site laboratory. The radiology services

provided by Radia Imaging, will also be available on an outpatient basis, meaning consumers do not need to be a patient at the facility to receive these services. The new center means the community will have available one of the largest family medicine practices on the Eastside. With a larger staff, the Redmond center will offer expanded weekday and weekend hours and more same-day appointments, making it easier than ever to see a doctor. With full emergency care, patients will be able to get to treatment quickly for major and minor accidents, breathing difficulties, even a severe cold — right in the neighborhood, near where people live. The new emergency department will house 16 emergency

exam rooms and be able to treat 35,000 people per year, reducing the wait time for emergency care. Just as important, it will be staffed by experienced, board-cer-

tified emergency physicians and trauma-trained nurses who are on staff at the Evergreen Hospital ED, the preferred choice for emergency care of Redmond, Woodinville and Kirkland residents. If care requires more extensive attention, patients are only moments away from the comprehensive, Evergreen Hospital, known throughout the Eastside

New gym blends exercising, socializing A large screen showed Prince’s “Purple Rain” during a cycling class. Afterward, people nibbled cheese and crackers, drank punch and played trivia games. That was “Pedaling to Prince,” a theme night at Fly Fitness in Kirkland last week. This isn’t your typical gym — owner Traci Bartee has made sure of it. “You don’t just come in, swipe your card and leave,” Bartee said. “I like the aspect of people coming in with their friends, meeting new friends and we all hang out afterward.” Fly Fitness opened on Kirkland’s Carillon Point (Suite 2225) Jan. 3 with the goal of fusing working out and socializing. Bartee makes up all the classes — which explains why some of them have names you’ve probably never heard of. There’s Organized Chaos, which flits between performing lunges on the dock outside, cycling inside or whatever else the instructor feels like. There’s Flycycle, which is 30 minutes on the bike followed by 30 minutes of yoga, barre exercise or Pilates. There’s even a class

called Flymamas with Hot Wheels, which Bartee dubs “a stroller exercise program for fabulously fly moms looking to claim their pre-baby bodies” — no babysitter necessary. “I see people at the gym doing the same thing every single day, and they’re going to get bored of that and quit their goals,” Bartee said. “You have to make it something that’s enjoyable.” Bartee’s been in the fitness world for more than 12 years. s most people know, you will have better insurance rates if you do not have claims. However sometimes you just can’t avoid it. Here is some advice: With auto accidents, if there are any injuries, put in the claim. Injuries are usually open-ended and it is not unusual for a claim to go on for several years. If there are no injuries and the damage is minor, get an estimate. A small claim can cost you more in the long run. You may be hit twice -- losing loss free credits and being surcharged for an accident that is your fault. Do not turn in claims under or close to your

If the accident is clearly not your fault, it’s usually better to put the claim in with the other driver’s carrier because you won’t have any deductibles. If the other carrier isn’t satisfactory, you always have the option to later involve your carrier as “Plan B.” An accident may trigger a request from your insurer to check your motor vehicle report. One accident may not make a huge impact; however, if the insurer finds three speeding tickets that they didn’t know about … you will pay for it! With home claims, again, get an estimate for the repairs if the claim is not catastrophic and pay for smaller claims out of pocket.
