Oak Harbor DAV serves Whidbey veterans
Disabled veterans on Whidbey Island in need of assistance filing a disability claim to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs need look no further than the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 47 in Oak Harbor. The DAV is a national nonprofit organization for veterans with a disability caused by their military service. The local chapter has been around for more than 40 years. "We help veterans of all wars,” chapter commander Muggs Monahan said, adding that all the members are volunteers. Another service the DAV offers are bi-weekly rides to and from the VA Hospital in Seattle, with multiple pickup locations along the
Iinterstate 5 corridor. The DAV is always looking for more drivers to shuttle the 12-passenger van, Monahan said. Last year, the chapter served about 890 people with the van service and helped more than 1,500 people file claims, he said. The DAV receives no federal money and supports itself with fundraisers, garage sales and an annual forget-me-not flower fundraiser in November. The chapter’s eight service officers (CSOs) are trained in giving assistance and have experience with filing their own disability claims in order to better serve the public. The DAV is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Disabled American Veterans Chapter 47: A nonprofit organization that provides needed assistance to active duty, retired, disabled veterans, veterans and their families, spouses and widows; chapter services officers available five days a week. Ladies Auxiliary Fleet Reserve Association: Unit 97 open to the wives and widows, mothers, sisters, daughters and granddaughters of active or retired members of the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. The Whidbey Island Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (WICMOAA): The local affiliate of MOAA, which is open to all officers of the Uniformed Services of the United States.
