Welcoming the season Vashon will celebrate the winter holidays this year with traditions old and new. On Saturday, Dec. 1, Santa will come to town, welcomed with the annual parade. This year it will gather and begin in a new location — near the Chamber of Commerce and Vashon Lodges at the north end of town. Parade marchers will step off at 5:30 p.m. and head south down the highway to the town Christmas tree, located at the Presbyterian church. Once everyone is gathered, the tree will be lit. As part of the festivities, island businesses will offer a mulled wine and hot cider garden between Island Queen (formerly Zombiez) and Recess Lab/Voice of Vashon. There will be crafts for kids to do inside Recess Lab, and DJ Michael Whitmore will play holiday music from the Voice of Vashon studios, broadcasting the music out into the street. Santa’s chair from his cottage will be set up near Voice of Vashon, and children are encouraged to bake him cookies and bring him one for a Christmas cookie judging event. The evening will also include a food drive for the Vashon-Maury Community Food Bank, and food donations are encouraged. Many downtown merchants will participate in the traditional open house, where people who have filled out coupons from The Beachcomber drop them off and become eligible for prizes. The coupons will be accepted all day. The following Friday, Dec. 7, will be First Friday, and in addition to island galleries and art spots being open, the merchants participating in the Gingerbread house contest will set their creations out on display to be enjoyed through most of December. Children who would like to write a letter to Santa this season should drop their letters off — making sure to include a return address — in the mailbox in the hall-

Children are also invited to spend some time doing holiday crafts and reading stories in Santa’s cottage in the Village Green on Thursdays and Fridays the month of December. Times have not been set, but will be announced soon. Finally, Santa will be in his cottage for visits and photos with island children before Christmas, and those dates will be coming soon as well. On Vashon, there is plenty to do this holiday season — music, dance, movies and more — and plenty of places to slip away for quiet moments, too.

Welcoming the Season: Vashon’s annual Christmas season will kick off Saturday, Dec. 1, with the open house downtown to drop off merchant coupons, capped off by the annual Santa parade and tree lighting. The parade will begin at 5:30 p.m. near the Vashon Lodges and Chamber of Commerce, followed by the tree lighting. The following weekend, participating businesses will display their gingerbread houses in the annual competition. Point Robinson Holiday Open House: Sponsored by the Keepers of Point Robinson in cooperation with the Vashon Park District, this free family event will include live holiday music, a visit from Lighthouse Santa, Captain Joe Wubbold’s homemade chili and limited tours of the lighthouse. Noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, at Point Robinson. Will Sing for Vashon: For the sixth year, Vashon Events will host “Will Sing for Vashon,” an event in which local musicians
Holiday events for all perform holiday songs to raise money for the island’s nonprofit organizations. The music will be presented by ensembles and soloists, each performing one holiday song of their choice. The evening will feature about two dozen performances from musicians of all ages. Audience members are each given an envelope listing island nonprofit organizations to which they may donate any amount to one or more. Over 20 nonprofits are listed on the envelope with a place to write in the name of others. Nonprofit representatives are invited to present their story between acts. ‘A Very Brassy Christmas’: Vashon Island Chorale’s 75 singers under the direction of Gary D. Cannon present “A Very Brassy Christmas” in two concerts at the Kay White Hall. Four major works will be performed: Daniel Pinkham’s “Christmas Cantata,” one of the great staples of American Christmas music for choir and organ; “A Winter’s Night,” composed by Cecilia McDowall, which incorporates five English and European carols; “Lord, Thou Hast Been Our Refuge,” by Ralph Vaughan Williams, which begins with two choirs — one singing a newly composed chant-like tune, the other singing a soft hymn stretched into long notes; and John Rutter’s “Gloria,” beloved throughout the Englishspeaking world. It has all joy of the best Christmas music. Cannon will give a lecture prior to both concerts. Tickets cost $20/general, $18/VCA member, $15/senior and $5/ youth to age 16 and are available at the VCA lobby desk and at vashoncenterforthearts.org.
The Nutcracker: Vashon Center for Dance presents Tchaikovsky’s classic ballet. Tickets are $16 general admission, $14 for seniors and $12 for VCA members and students. 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Dec. 14 and 15, and 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 15 and 16, at Vashon Center for the Arts. Community Holiday Singalong: The Vashon Theatre will host its free annual community singalong. 5:30 p.m. (Christmas cartoon), 6 p.m. (singalong) Sunday, Dec. 16. Holiday Piano Showcase and Toy Drive: Now in its fifth year, this event brings together local pianists and vocalists for an evening of holiday songs, with each act performing one to three holiday songs of their choice. A venerable island institution for the last 85 years, the pharmacy is ready to delight kids of all ages this holi-

day season with a collection of home goods and toys for the whole family. “We’re expecting to have a pretty good holiday,” said Young, adding that their collections this year are sure to surprise and delight. “As always, we hope that people shop local.” You probably won’t guess what Young anticipates will be a surprise, off-the-wall hit: Thinking Putty, from Crazy Aaron’s Puttyworld. Globs of colorful, iridescent slime bend and sculpt into creations limited only by the imagination. “It does really cool things. Some change color, some glow in the dark, some are magnetic,” said Young, adding that LEGO sets are an evergreen — and more traditional — gift that never stay on the shelf for long. Priscilla Schleigh, owner of Giraffe just across the street, said that her shop has an all-new toy corner this year in keeping with her mission to offer fair trade and green goods sourced from all over the world. “We have over 50 different countries representing the store,” she said, naming selections of her wide inventory from unique accessories, jewelry and clothing, to beautiful duvets, knit kits, felted animals, locally made handcrafted soaps and beeswax candles, and other pieces you won’t find anywhere else. “The first thing I do is ask a ques-
tion about the person they’re buying for,” she said. “Do they like to cook? What are their activities, and what’s your budget?” Schleigh suggested one gift idea for the culinarily-inclined person on your list — an artisinal olive oil spoon wrapped in a handwoven kitchen towel. Don’t forget about your best friend! Cheryl Pruett of Pandora’s Box said that you should make time to find your pet something special — and not to wait until the last minute. “I’m always amazed. Christmas Eve is always the busiest day of the year,” she said, recommending a medley of treats and toys for cats and dogs. Even a simple grooming, she said, can show your fur baby that you care. The holidays are all about spending time with friends and family, and Meri Nimz of Rock It! Consignment & Alterations said islanders should look your best when paying loved ones a visit. For a simple ensemble, Nimz said that you can’t go wrong with the basics. “I would recommend wool sweaters — obviously one of my favorite things,” she said, tugging on the one she was wearing. “For the damp cold, they work really well.” Nimz added that a palate of bright colors always keeps things interest-

Pandora’s Box has good treats and toys for islanders’ furry friends. “We have really nice cowboy boots to make a splash,” she said. For New Years Eve, it’s all about sequins and shine, which she said lots of islanders look for in advance. “In years past we’ve have a holiday bling section. That was fun. Shiny stuff is fun because when else do you get to wear it?” And for any great party, Palouse Winery on the north end has islanders covered, according to Sarah Tanksley. “Wine really depends on personal taste, but our port is very popular,” she said. “People tend to pull out port after family dinner, which makes it an ideal holiday beverage, and our ‘Por-
tage’ is excellent — the bottle design is very Vashon, as well.” Tanksley said that one of Palouse’s staples, a stand-alone Malbec, is only available in limited quantities this year. “This is a chance for folks to stock up for the next couple of years,” she said. “It will be accessible at club pricing ($42) to everyone this holiday season.” The winery is also hosting an intimate holiday wine dinner from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15, featuring an expertly prepared five-course meal. Shaker Lemon Pie: Winter’s Sunniest Dessert
By Tom Conway My favorite winter dessert is Shaker lemon pie. Each bite exacts a pop of sweet-sour goo, chased by a chew or two of flaky rich crust, lemon rind al dente, and the simple unadulterated flavors of homespun goodness. With such attributes, you’d think I could leave it alone. Fat chance, this pantry pie begs for a little tweaking worthy of its farm-fresh ingredients and taste potential. Why change things? For as much as I love traditional Shaker lemon pie, which uses two whole lemons, I find pureeing the rinds and filling into a smoother, creamier custard allows the dessert to shine on all levels (along with sparing one’s jaw muscles from a hearty chew). Wee bits of pulverized lemon rind add interest and texture to the custard without dominating it. And unlike most lemon pies, this seasonal mainstay boasts a double crust. That is, the custard filling is covered with a layer of dough and baked. Give it a try. I often joke lemon meringue pie is for kids, but Shaker lemon pie is for the adults in the room. So put on your big boy/girl pants and get baking. Oh, and one other thing; I prefer Meyer lemons because they lend the perfect combination of sweet, tart and sour to the pie. I’m spoiled by my friend and favorite Californian, Fern, who sends me Meyer lemons from her backyard tree each winter, but of course, Meyer lemons are also readily available at your local grocery stores.

In search of Christmas magic This time of year often brings with it a veritable U-Haul full of emotions and memories for many. And maybe — because goodness knows there are an infinite number of reasons to — you have become disenchanted with the whole thing. It’s so easy to be jaded, perhaps even saddened or fed up by the relentless and aggressive commercialization and politicization. It’s understandable how, like Charles Schulz’ angsty bald muse, you might lament the loss or perceived lack of meaning in the current state of Christmas. This might not be an issue for those whose celebrations are anchored by their faith. But for the rest of us, what does it mean? For me, it’s all about magic. Yes, magic. The magic that exists in us as children, that allows us to be completely, honestly and even eagerly open to wonder and possibility. That allows you to believe that a rock in a cute box is your new pet, even though it’s no different from the ones you kick in the dirt on your way to school. The magic of the entire concept of Santa Claus. The magic of absolute, unwavering belief in the unbelievable and the anticipation of special things that happen just once a year. These things — your things, my things, it doesn’t matter, everyone has their own — are so steeped in memory

Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.” and embedded in the arbitrary concept of tradition that I believe it’s how we try to keep that magic alive. And I think many people don’t see that. My mom’s shortbread cookies — which are actually my Scottish great, great grandmother’s shortbread cookies, top the list for me. They only have three ingredients and they are, even now, my favorite cookies of all time. We only ever got to make them at Christmas time, a tradition I have continued through my adult life. Initially, when I had left home for college, it was to share this magic with my friends, and later, co-workers and eventually, my own children. It also was my way of having my mom around even when we weren’t together for the holiday. My grown son has already demanded the recipe so that he can continue this tradition in his life, wherever and with whomever that takes him. It connects him to his grandma but I know it’s also me he will have with him as he proudly presents his first solo batch to its lucky recipients. Cookies. My mom has been gone for six years now and the smell of them baking still brings her

right back. Magic. Lights on the tree. Trees are magical things already, but with lights ... colorful or like stars, some twinkling, others steady beacons of beautiful light shining on the ornaments scattered throughout the deep, cool green of the boughs. Every year I’d burn a finger or two because the lights were too pretty not to touch, and in those days, they were very, very hot (I’m old). Every. Single.Year. Like a moth to a flame. But it never mattered — a lit up tree is literally a treasure chest for the imagination and and a feast for the eyes and curious fingers. Still magic, now with fewer trips to the first aid kit. Adorning myself with shiny gold garland while my dad decorated our tree. (OK, I still do this.) My poor father did his best to control the tree-decorating process, but there was no way anything would keep me from what seemed like miles of sparkly gold fuzzy garland. Are you kidding? That stuff is the Beyoncé of tree ornamentation. Special bonus magic: It makes people smile when you wear it. I used to turn pieces of it into
halos for my coworkers and myself when I was a NICU nurse and working Christmas — they loved it, families loved it, it brightened the mood and generally, made everyone just a little bit cheerier in a setting that is typically quite somber. Sitting at the top of the stairs with my brother and sister, waiting for what seemed like forever for the giant lights to “warm up” on the movie camera my dad always insisted on using to record our Christmas mornings. Straining to catch a glimpse of what was just beyond our sight. It was magic we were looking for and hoping to see, through the blinding spotlights of that insufferable camera when we were finally given the green light to come down the stairs. And now? My family can watch my siblings and I grow up before their eyes — from when my mother was pregnant with me, until I was about 13 — via the video my father put together of all of our bleary-eyed, Christmas morning movies. What a gift, for my children to see their grandparents as young parents, their aunt, uncle and mom as kids, various cousins and extended family members they never got to meet ... magic. There is magic everywhere, all the time. It just feels like there’s a little more at this time of year, if you’re willing to see it. — Sarah Low

Could there be a better way to spend a holiday? In that spirit, Vashon Bookshop owner Nancy Katica and manager Laurie Steward SPELLING provided book suggestions for this holiday season. Chocolate is optional. “The Witch Elm” is a new mystery by acclaimed author Tana French. Adjectives used to describe the book include “spellbinding,” “exquisite” and “thrilling.” Publisher’s Weekly says this: “French is at her suspenseful best in this standalone, in which an Irishman, who’s always considered himself a lucky person, has to reassess his past in the light of a gruesome find on the grounds of his family’s ancestral home.” Also a mystery, “The Child Finder” by Rene Denfeld is “a literary page-turner set in the Pacific Northwest,” according to Katica. Available in paperback, the book tells the story of an investigator with unique insights who is called upon to find a missing girl — and the investigator was once a missing child herself. For memoir fans, Katica recommends “Educated” by Tara Westover. This book, a New York Times bestseller, tells Westover’s story of being a young girl who, kept out of school, left her sur-
vivalist family in rural Idaho and goes on earn a doctorate from Cambridge University. “Readers come in and say, “Oh my gosh, it was wonderful,” Katica said. Cooks this holiday season and beyond will likely enjoy renowned chef Yotam Ottolenghi’s latest book, “Simple,” which contains 130 recipes that can be made in 30 minutes or less, featuring 10 ingredients or less. Recipes range from Iranian herb fritters to Bridget Jones’ pan-fired salmon with pine-nut salsa to Nutella, sesame and hazelnut rolls. The writer Anne Lamott is a household name for many readers; she has a new book out, perfect for these challenging times, “Almost Everything: Notes on Hope.” Known for being both candid and laugh-out-loud funny, Lamott soothes and inspires in her current writing. Readers who want to sink into a sumptuous novel will be happy to unwrap “Overstory” by Richard Power. Store manager Stewart called the book a cross between the popular “The Hidden Life of Trees” and the classic “The Monkey Wrench Gang.” Barbara Kingsolver calls the book “a delightfully choreographed, ultimately breathtaking hoodwink.” In part, the XXX-page book tells the story of nine people whose experiences with trees bring them together to address the destruction of forests. Readers of books for young adults (approximately age 12 and older) may enjoy “Bridge of Clay” by Markus Zusak, the author of the “The Book Thief.” It is a family saga of five boys who raise themselves. Kirkus reviews says the series is a must for all fantasy fans. For young readers, the new picture book “Zola’s Elephant” will likely be a favorite. The tale of imagination and friendship is by New York Times bestselling author Randall de Sève. The colorful illustrations, sure to delight adults and children are by two-time Caldecott winner Pamela Zagarenski.
