The Aberdeen Lions Club presents its 14th annual Toast the Harbor Food & Wine Festival at the Quinault Beach Resort and Casino on Saturday, Nov. 3rd from 1 PM until 8 PM. Patrons will be able to taste beverages from 13 wineries, 2 breweries, 1 distillery and 1 wine vendor plus shop at over a dozen different vendors. The $20 entrance fee includes a wine and spirits menu, tote bag, souvenir wine glass and five wine sampling tickets. Over 100 donated items will be displayed for silent bidding throughout the day. In addition, this year we will feature the Olson Bros Band during the event.

Wine, Beer, & Spirits Participants LEONY’S CELLARS A boutique winery with a tasting room in Cashmere, WA and production taking place in Enumclaw, Leony’s Cellars was founded in 2015 by Navy Veteran Sandi Moreno and her husband Salvador. They specialize in small-batch, hand-crafted wines utilizing premium Washington grown grapes to create award winning wines. Most varietal production ranges between 50-100 cases per year.
COLUMBIA WINERY For more than 50 years, Columbia Winery located in Woodinville, WA has been producing award winning wines achieved through maintaining a curious approach and commitment to innovation. In the early '80s they released the first series of Washington vineyard-designate wines along with the first Washington sourced Pino Gris, Syrah, and Cabernet Franc. BARNARD GRIFFIN WINERY Founded in 1983 in Richland, WA by Rob Griffin and Deborah Barnard, Barnard Griffin has been producing exceptional wines for over 30 years at the confluence of the Yakima, Columbia, and Snake rivers, in the heart of Washington’s wine country. Rob discovered his passion for winemaking at an early age while working at his uncle’s vineyard in Napa. After graduating with a degree in Fermentation Science and cutting his teeth in the Napa Valley, he took a leap of faith and became a trailblazer in Washington grape growing which resulted in a legacy
of awards and accolades over 40 years. WYNOOCHEE RIVER WINERY Something new up the “Nooch” as of 2017 and joining us for the first time is Wynoochee River Winery. Owners Jeff and Denise Schupbach specialize in creating premium fruit wines, offering hand crafted varietals not typically found in retail stores including black currant, strawberry rhubarb, blueberry, marionberry, boysenberry, and loganberry. Many of the berries are sourced directly from the Schupbach’s farm on the Wynoochee. USA Wine Ratings recently featured Wynoochee River Winery in a recent article and their wines have been featured at many tasting events. HEYMANN WHINERY A boutique winery started in a Chehalis, WA garage, Bob and Flossie Heymann turned a hobby into a full-fledged business endeavor in 2004. Heymann Whinery (yes there really is an “h” in that word) grew and expanded for 12 years before returning to their garage in 2012. Their downsized venue allows them to focus on small batch runs of fruit wines, red and white varietals, and their port-style Raspberry Coco-lo; a 60% Merlot, 30+% Raspberry wine with a little bit of chocolate flavoring – a nice end to the day. And their motto is “We can help you whine”. SCATTER CREEK WINERY Located in Tenino, WA, Scatter Creek Winery was founded in 2005 by Terril and Andrea Keary. Olson Brothers to entertain Toast the Harbor The Olson Bros Band burst onto the country music scene in 2013 when they won the Battle of the Bands at Capital Lake Fair in Olympia and also won a national songwriting contest for their hit song "Sunrise" in the Texaco Country Showdown The Olson Bros won $5,000, a trip to Nashville to consult with a publishing company, and got introduced at The Grand Ol' Opry. The band originated in Olympia, WA and is lead by singer/songwriters Luke and Isaac Olson. They are known for their tight brotherly harmonies and the fun energetic vibe they bring to their live show! They are currently playing shows all over the Northwest and Nashville, and are gearing up for a heavy 2018 tour schedule up in the Northwest where they play at country music festivals, weddings, concerts in the park, and wineries. They have had the opportunity to open for some big

Olson dian Country Star Johnny Reid. Their newest album "Let The Jack Drop", released March 2017 and is available on iTunes! The Olson Bros both attended Washington State University which is where they truly started to find a deeper love for country
music. Luke is now attending Belmont University in Nashville studying songwriting and making more connections in the music industry including interning with Desmond Child (Songwriter for Living On A Prayer) and writing with quite a few well known Nashville songwriters. The Olson Bros enjoy writing songs that are true to themselves, make people want to dance, cry, smile and/or just have a
good time! Some of the bands all time favorite artists include John Denver, Rascal Flatts, Zac Brown, Billy Currington, Darius Rucker, and FGL. They are currently gearing up for a big 2019 booking up a ton of Northwest and some Nashville dates! Aberdeen Lions Paper Recycling The Aberdeen Lions have been recycling newspapers since the 1960s. At that time the club would advertise that we would collect from the curbs bundled newspapers. Residents would save their papers, tie them in bundles and place the bundles at their curb on the appointed day. Club members would drive through the neighborhoods in pickup trucks and collect the paper. The club had a trailer much like we have now for storage until it was shipped. After that we had collection shacks in a couple of locations. One was on the Safeway parking lot near Heron Street. That was a good spot until it was burned by vandals. We were offered a secure location in the parking lot behind the Aberdeen Police station. Good spot until it too was burned by vandals. In about 2000 we were asked by the Central Park Lions to help them gather the left over papers at The Daily World. We shared that resource with that club for a couple of
years. They were not able to provide assistance so that became our project. At about that time we were able to place a shed on the corner of Simpson and Division for the collection of paper. We were at that location until about four years ago when the property was developed into an auto parts store. We then were able to secure space at our current location on Simpson near Duffy’s Restaurant. We collect the paper we get from The Daily World and the drop box until we have a shipment of about 30 tons (about four months). We ship the paper to a paper mill in Longview. Why do Lions spend a couple of hours each Monday morning handling newspaper ? To earn money to put back into the community. In 2017 we earned $7,000 which was used to buy eyeglasses for needy children, to refurbish bicycles to be given to kids at Christmas and to make cash donations to many other causes in our community.

Bicycles From Heaven The Stafford Creek Correction Center and the Aberdeen Lions Club have been in a partnership for several years to get refurbished bikes into the hands of needy children. The lions collect used bicycles from several different sources and store them at another member of the partnership, The Historical Seaport. Every few weeks Aberdeen Lions members take a couple of pickup loads of used bikes to the prison at Stafford Creek and return with a load of look-like new bikes to be stored again at the Seaport. At Stafford Creek there is a bike repair shop manned by several offenders that convert the used, sometimes rusty, bicycles into virtually new machines. White Cane Days The first Friday and Saturday of May each year Lions Club in Washington and Northern Idaho have White Cane Days. You have likely been out shopping in past years and a Lions Club member has asked you to wear a white cane and of course for a donation. Usually because time is limited, you want to get on with shopping or there are people behind you, you don’t get a real good explanation what the money really is used for and, of course, it is for the Lions and they do good things in our community, right? Well, here is a more thorough explanation of what those collections are used for. First of all, this money is not to be used by local Clubs that collect the donations. These funds go to the Northwest Lions Foun-
dation (founded in 1969) to support several activities throughout Washington and Northern Idaho. These activities include the MD 19 Lions Health Screening Unit. This unit travels throughout the region doing health screening, sight, hearing, blood pressure and diabetic testing of over 30,000 individuals annually. It is in high demand at schools (for vison screening), health and wellness fairs. The entire cost of this van is funded by White Canes collections. Another activity funded by White Canes donations is the Foundation’s Hearing program. The Foundation’s hearing program provides low income individuals with hearing aids for a $50 co-pay with the balance of the cost shared by the Foundation and
your local Lions Club. The Foundation assists your local Lions Club with Patient Care Grants providing individuals with sightrelated medical procedures and special equipment for blind children and adults in our communities who could not otherwise afford them. The Foundation also assists local Clubs with Project Support Grants for sight related projects. This past year the Lions Clubs of Grays Harbor and Pacific counties were awarded a $3,400 grant to assist them with the purchase of a Vision Screening device. This device is being used to assist local School Districts to meet their Washington State mandated requirement to screen the vision of each K through 7th Grader every other year. This device will screen for five
different conditions in an instant, speeding the process up dramatically while addressing other eye conditions that the eye chart screenings would miss. Again, local Lions Clubs will offer their services and the device at no cost to the schools. (See more information on this project in the article under Vision Screening on page 16). So next year during the first weekend of May if you meet a Lion in front of one of our local businesses and they are handing our White Canes, make a generous donation because it is very likely someone in your family or someone you know has been helped with a vision or hearing issue by the Northwest Lions Foundation and your local Lions Club because of White Canes donations.

A generous grant from the Grays Harbor Community Foundation has helped to purchase some needed tools as well as parts. The program has many wins. Used bicycles are
recycled, the men doing the refurbishing get great pleasure from their work and learn some valuable skills that they may use when their sentence is up, and children that would not ordinarily get a bike will have a shiny one that looks like new. Perhaps the greatest positive is the joy the Lions Club members experience when they see the smiling faces of the recipients of the bikes. So far, our club has distributed over 3,000 bikes to needy children.

Vision Screening Project Sight and Hearing Screening This past year the Aberdeen Lions volunteered to assist the Aberdeen School District screen elementary school kids for vision and hearing. This was brought about by a new State mandate requiring schools to screen elementary school children from kindergarten to seventh grade every other year for vision and hearing defects. Twelve Lions members volunteered and assisted the school nurses screen over 900 kids at all eight elementary schools in the District. Later, we attended a Lions conference in Vancouver where we learned of the Salmon Creek Lions Club project where they had purchased two PlusOptix Vision Screening Devices
and had screened over 7,000 individuals this last year. While the old chart screening tested for nearsightedness (Myopia) and farsightedness (Hyperopea), this screening device also detects Astigmatism (blurred vision), Anisometropia (unequal refractive power), Anisocoria (unequal pupil size) and Strabismus (eye misalignment). And once focused correctly the device does this in less than 5 seconds, speeding up the screenings considerably. That information was brought back to the local Lions Clubs and it was suggested that they purchase a screening device to assist local schools meet their screening mandate. These Clubs (Aberdeen,
Hoquiam, Cosmopolis, Willapa Harbor, Central Park, Ocean Shores and Clearwater/Kalaloch) of Zone G 3 of District 19 (Southwest Washington) enthusiastically voted to purchase a device subject to securing a grant from the Northwest Lions Foundation. That grant was received and the device purchased and we are in the process of working with the local school nurses to schedule screenings. Members from the local Lions Clubs will take the screening device to the schools and screen those classes that need screening as a public service of Lions Clubs (no cost). Additionally, the schools will be provided with a record of the screenings for their files.
The Aberdeen Lions has played an integral part in assisting citizens in our community who may not be in a position to fund all of their sight and hearing needs. Applications are available through the Lions Club. Three of our optometric doctor members; Scott Berken, Greg
Bogdanovich, and Jim Weyrich provide the professional vision services at reduced costs and the club pays for their services. Hearing aid approved applicants are referred to Dr. Scoones at West Coast Hearing in Aberdeen for testing and fitting. This program is jointly funded
by the Aberdeen Lions and the NW Lions Foundation. Over the past 5 years, Aberdeen Lions have assisted 24 individuals with hearing aids totaling $6,983. Sight and vision problems have been addressed for 62 individuals at a cost of $9,170.
Salvation Army Food Bank support On a recent Saturday morning 3 stalwart Aberdeen Lions members met at the Salvation Army Food Bank and began tearing down walls. Six hours later the amount of usable room was more than doubled. This is just one example of the continued support given by Aber-
