2018 Red Envelope campaign is here What matters most to YOU? They’re not the typical symbols of Fall, but on Bainbridge Island, a red envelope in your mailbox, One Call for All signs popping up around town, and appeals from your favorite organizations mean one thing: The Red Envelope Campaign has begun. Since 1960, One Call for All has sent out an annual fundraising appeal on behalf of the many nonprofit organizations serving Bainbridge Island. It is like no other campaign in the world, because One Call for All delivers 100 percent of your donation to the organizations you designate. We no longer knock on neighbors’ doors to collect for the appeal, though. The campaign relies on each Bainbridge resident to choose recipient agencies and submit their donation via mail or online. Each year, the number of dollars raised grows – last year, the campaign raised $1.4 million! – but so does the need. If you’ve seen your Red Envelope, you know that there are MANY agencies participating this year. Senior Center supports full, active lives If you’re of a certain age but find the term ‘senior’ doesn’t fit, try ‘elder.’ Maybe ‘perennial.’ Or none of the above. Notwithstanding its name, the Bainbridge Island Senior Center is less about generational labels than helping its members live full and active lives – through all of adulthood. “Our biggest challenge is, some people think the ‘senior’ center doesn’t apply to them because they’re not old and feeble,” says Reed Price, executive director. “There are people who require assistance who come here, but there are many, many who come here who don’t. The combination of social interaction, information and activities are of value to anyone. “The most common comment I hear from people who sign up is, ‘I wish I’d done this two years ago. I didn’t realize all the things you’re doing down here’.” The age of the Senior Center itself is a matter of perspective – either 30 years young, or having just celebrated its first birthday. After three decades under Park

and participation, with current membership more than doubling to nearly 1,200 overnight. Annual dues are $20, supporting a startling array of programs and services. About 90 seniors come through the doors each weekday, to enjoy a slate of some 350 activities over a calendar month. Members credit the agile response of the
Senior Center’s mostly volunteer staff – Price remains the only full-time employee – for adding new programming on the fly to meet demand. “If two or three people express interest in a subject, that’s enough for us to try it,” Price says. Consider: Current offerings include the Evergreen Singers choir, Wanna B Karaoke, Bard Read (Shakespeare group), a Readers Theatre, Friday Sing-A-Long, Memoir Writing Club, French, German and Chinese conversation clubs, and the jocular Liberation Laughter group. Card games? Take a seat at the table and they’ll deal you a hand for duplicate bridge, cribbage or pinochle. Want to stay fit? Exercise programs include Stay Active and Independent for Life (SAIL), Tai Chi, line dancing, yoga, stretching for men and women, table tennis and Petanque. Lectures have ranged from a series on major turning points in U.S. history that reshaped the world, to gardening with Ann Lovejoy. The Adventures in Travel group recently drew dozens of members for a vicarious year-long hike around the world narrated by a globetrotting member. KIAC helps immigrants settle, adapt Even beyond the current political context, demand for immigrant assistance in Kitsap County is strong. Kitsap is home to a great number of immigrants from Mexico and Central America – the Guatemalan community is especially strong – all facing the challenges of adapting to life in a new country and negotiating its language, culture, services and laws. Enter the Kitsap Immigrant Assistance Center. Its mission: promoting “the wellbeing of immigrants and the development of a rich multicultural community, [working] to empower, educate and integrate immigrants through advocacy and social justice.” From its Bremerton office, the small organization – four employees, backed by a cadre of dedicated volunteers – assists clients with a range of services, from finding health care to helping them make a claim for legal immigration status and citizenship, and even avoiding deportation. The challenges have taken on new urgency against the backdrop of a federal crackdown on undocumented immigration, and the ongoing national debate such policies have provoked. At KIAC, the big issues are reduced to human scale, one hopeful family or individual at a time. “Being the bridge between the community and the immigrant community – to my mind, that is what I really believe about immigrant rights work in 2018,” says Sally Tellekson, KIAC Executive Director. “America has struggled for a long time with its immigration policy. But right now, it’s a human rights issue.” The organization grew out of the informal social work of Martitha May of Bremerton.

Joel Sackett photo May, a bilingual Mexican-American, in the early 2000s became the go-to person for Hispanic immigrants needing help with quotidian concerns like understanding medical forms or reading a take-home note from their kids’ school. Routine stuff for native English speakers, but not so for aspiring citizens just coming into a new language.
Immigrants from 50 nations helped KIAC organized as a 501(c)3 nonprofit in 2006, and in 2014 a legal services arm to its array of family services. While Latin American immigrants make up the majority of its client base, KIAC has now served clients from 50 countries, with many immigrants hailing from Africa and Asia. and other providers, KIAC links immigrants with health services both directly and through referrals. A mobile dental truck sets up in the parking lot quarterly, offering exams and cleanings. A “clothing closet” offers clothing, hygiene items and other necessities at no cost. Of new importance is the KIAC legal services team. Prior to last November, their legal services were all “affirmative” – that is, assistance with green cards, naturalization, language and citizenship classes. Since then, KIAC has begun taking on “defensive” cases as well, assisting immigrants facing detention or deportation. The Justice Department allows people who are not attorneys to perform work that would normally be done by immigration lawyers, so-called “accredited reps.” A “partially accredited” representative can provide basic guidance and advice
when an immigrant has a clear path to citizenship. KIAC has a team of eight such reps, who have helped hundreds of immigrants move toward naturalization. When the legal need is greater – for example, deportation looms – “fully accredited” reps can step in and appear in federal immigration court on an immigrant’s behalf. While demand far outpaces KIAC’s resources, they are chalking up victories. Ray Garrido cites the case of a young woman from Central America, who spoke only an obscure, indigenous language and fled to the US to escape persecution in her own country. KIAC helped her escape an abusive relationship and apply for legal immigrant status, during which time she taught herself both English and Spanish. Then she set her sights on full citizenship – and aced the test. “I went down to the auditorium and I watched her become a US citizen,” Garrido recalls with pride. “The first thing she asked was, ‘how do I register to vote?’ Every time I tell the story I want to cry.” On the defensive legal side, Garrido has appeared on behalf of a man of Mayan descent – again, the victim of violence in his home country – before a federal immigration judge. Garrido successfully pleaded the man’s case and secured his release from the Tacoma detention center, reuniting him with his family. The man is now working through the documentation process. KIAC is supported through grants and individual contributions. Support through One Call For All goes to the organization’s general operations. Tellekson says that immigrants represent an important segment of our community— store and restaurant owners, health care workers, landscapers. They are our neighbors and a part of our community. “They’re living a really tenuous existence right now,” she says. “Immigrants are here for the same reason that many of our ancestors came to this country—to make a better life. KIAC is here to help them on that path, to become productive, integrated members of the community.”

Park lovers have a friend in Foundation
Any list of Bainbridge Island’s best features is sure to have ‘parks’ near the top.
From quiet wooded trails to breezy open meadows, tranquil beaches to busy neighborhood playgrounds, there’s an island park for every mood or taste. Supporting and enhancing this thriving system of trails, parks and open space is the mission of the Bainbridge Island Parks Foundation, an independent 501(c) (3) organization. From its office in the Marge Williams Center, the Foundation leverages community resources and passion for park projects around the island. The Foundation works in partnership with the Bainbridge Island Metro Park & Recreation District, supplementing that agency’s general maintenance and improvement work all across the park system. “Our motto ‘because we love parks’ is a statement of purpose, and answers every question about why we do what we do,” said Barb Trafton, Executive Director. “Why hire students to pull holly and ivy at Blakely Harbor? Because we love parks. Why build

The Parks Foundation lets park lovers make tax-deductible donations to specific park projects, to create new amenities or get things done sooner than might happen without private support. New project-focused “Friends” groups sponsored by the
Foundation are generating interest, inspiration, ideas and investment. A recent success: Friends of WilliamsOlson Park have raised $140,000 this year to fund new amenities and environmental restoration at that park on Manzanita Bay, off Koura Road. And another: the new Hawley Cove boardwalk, now under construction in the shoreline park north of the ferry terminal. The boardwalk – improving accessibility, and creating a new pedestrian link between Wing Point and the ferry – had been slated for construction in 2019 on a capital improvement list for many years. A successful $20,000 fund drive by the Foundation supplemented state grant funding and allowed construction this year. Machinery purchased with a Parks Foundation grant is improving the boardwalk construction itself. A new “anchor-auger” machine lets the Park District construction team sink the boardwalk pilings with minimal impact on the sensitive marsh environment. The system will later be used for additional boardwalks at Meigs Park and other sites. “We’re very much a project-oriented organization,” Trafton said. “When people make contributions to the Parks Foundation, they know they’ll see tangible work done in See PARKS FOUNDATION, Page 8

our parks, improvements that they and their families and neighbors will enjoy and appreciate.” Friends of Moritani Preserve has rallied enthusiasm for Winslow’s newest park, with an ongoing fund drive for a 5-year environmental restoration plan.
Stewardship is key

Stewardship is central to the Foundation’s mission. The Foundation provides funding for the Trails Crew and Student Conservation Corps, outdoor summer jobs programs for high school and college-age students that put young people to work in island parks. Deploying in eight parks over a six-week period, this year’s SCoCo teams put in more than 1,700 hours of intensive restoration work. They clipped nuisance vines from more than 800 trees, and cleared 41 cubic yards of holly, ivy, blackberry and Scotch broom for haul-off and disposal. The poster park for these efforts is Blakely Harbor, where the Foundation has leveraged donations from neighbors and countless volunteer hours into a comprehensive, ongoing program of invasive plant removal and revegetation. “For all the beauty of our island parks, they require real stewardship and commitment,” Trafton said. “By organizing cleanup

days and paying for targeted restoration work, the Foundation is improving and keeping our parkland ecology healthy for the long term.” The Trails Crew works every summer to complete a mile of new trail and maintain another five to seven miles in the popular Park District trail system. New trails added in 2018 include the Old Mill Trail, the Wyatt to Shepard Trail and renovated trails at Pritchard Park. The Foundation also runs a thriving Community Grant program, funding smaller initiatives by an array of local groups. Over the past few years, the Foundation has provided funding to Bainbridge Island Rowing, the Bainbridge Beach Volleyball Club, the Water Polo Club and the Teen Center. Projects have ranged from a new vault system for young gymnasts at the Battle Point Transmitter Building, to new drinking fountains for the Aquatics Center, to a covered practice facility at the Rotary Park ball fields. Contributions through One Call For All go to the Parks Foundation’s general project fund. “Parks and playgrounds, trails and beaches enhance the quality of our lives on a daily basis more than almost anything,” Trafton said. “There is never enough tax funding for the care and inspirational ideas these beloved public places deserve. The Parks Foundation is here for the community, so that together we can support exceptional parks and trails for our fun, health and social connectivity.”
THE LIBRARY THAT BAINBRIDGE BUILT Bainbridge Public Library is an all-volunteer-run organization that owns, maintains, and manages the building and grounds solely through donations and investments. Moniz Project for healthy, happy kids Popular, outgoing, full of love and life, Tyler Moniz was the guy who could light up any room. Until he wasn’t. In April 2016, just finishing his third year of college but overwhelmed by his engineering program and struggling with depression, the Bainbridge Island native abruptly took his own life. No warning – he’d even assured his mother, Valerie Lee Moniz, straight up that he wasn’t “going to do anything stupid.” She believed him; a trained health professional, she knew to look out for the signs of depression and had gone out of her way to ask. “He felt like he was letting down friends and family and community, and was very upset that he was not doing well in school,” his mother says. “We encouraged him to maybe change majors or take a ‘gap’ semester. We had a plan, but two weeks later he took his own life.” It was a day after his 21st birthday.

The year-old nonprofit works to raise awareness about suicide and depression, especially among young people. The group supports educational and community programs that promote happiness, well-being and hope. A big challenge, Lee Moniz says, is that

nobody really wants to talk about suicide, when in fact, everybody should. There are too many young people struggling with depression who may be thinking of a way out. Suicide claims too many lives. Pretty much everyone has been touched by the subject, or knows someone who has. But it’s too comfortable to sweep it under
the rug, and treat each suicide as an individual tragedy, instead of part of a larger community health crisis. “We need to do something more,” Moniz said. “Suicide is the smoke, and I want to find out what’s starting the fire. Our mission is to start conversations and get people to talk about mental health just like any other disease, and get rid of that stigma related to it so people are comfortable admitting to having it. That’s the first step to getting help.” Their first project: “conversation benches,” to be placed on school campuses and around town. The hope is that kids and adults who might otherwise be absorbed by their smartphones can sit down and have an actual face-to-face discussion, with a friend or acquaintance, about whatever’s on their mind. “It makes you put down your phone and have a conversation, and I think we’re starting to lose that as a society – those one-onone connections,” she says. “Technology is very isolating.” The group has also started a scholarship program through Bainbridge High School, a sportsmanship award to a player who sets a positive example by encouraging and supporting their teammates. Ovation! keeps musical theatre vibrant Comedy and drama, colorful costumes and evocative sets, toe-tapping songs and exhilarating dance – all the elements of theater come together in a rollicking good musical. Ovation! Performing Arts NW celebrates this ever-popular form season after season, presenting the great musicals to island audiences while giving new generations of performers the thrill of working under the bright lights. “The actors who come and audition are in the shows, it’s fun for them to learn this music and learn to work as an ensemble, to learn the choreography and bring it to the stage,” says Shelly Vosshall, Ovation! board president. “And the audiences know they’re going to get a top-notch production in

Musical Theatre Bainbridge, focusing exclusively on a form that was just part of the mix at the island’s long-running theatre company, Bainbridge Performing Arts.
A later rebranding as Ovation! Performing Arts NW reflects a broadened palette of offerings, including musical revues, theater classes, and young actor studios. As a teaching organization – a gateway for hopefuls who might never be cast in local theatre alongside more polished,
professional actors – Ovation! sees its role as complementary to the big playhouse around the corner. “We’re really an entryway into other theatre organizations,” says April Avey Trabucco, Ovation! marketing and development manager. “We’re about families and multi-generation and accessibility. We’re not looking to compete with BPA. We augment what they do, and we fill out the performing arts scene on the island.” Ovation! presents two mainstage productions each year, in July and December. These are the classics – durable and timeless titles like “Annie,” “Oliver,” “Brigadoon,” “Fiddler on the Roof ” and “Pirates of Penzance.” Actors are drawn from Bainbridge, Kitsap County, Seattle and as far away as Tacoma to Ovation’s Ericksen Avenue studio. A stage director is free to cast against age and type – putting children in the chorus of “My Fair Lady,” for instance – opening up productions to a broad range of interest, experience and abilities. One constant: Ovation! productions always feature a live orchestra to bring the score to life. Ovation’s teaching wing, the Performing Arts Academy, reflects the company’s continued growth. ALLIANCE FOR YOUTH is a collaborative partnership of community leaders, teens, parents and individuals working to expand our island’s capacity to support positive youth development from birth through high school. AMERICAN RED CROSS provides humanitarian aid throughout Kitsap county, and wherever we are needed. Whether it is home fires, floods or wildfires, the Red Cross and our volunteers always respond to the call. ARMS AROUND BAINBRIDGE provides support to members of our island community facing overwhelming financial and emotional burdens associated with serious illness through direct person-to-person support and interaction with our beneficiaries. THE ART PROJECT (formerly Bainbridge Arts & Crafts) is a nonprofit art gallery that brings monthly exhibitions, free art education, and outreach to Bainbridge Island and elsewhere in Kitsap County. ARTS & HUMANITIES BAINBRIDGE works to create an environment on Bainbridge Island where the arts and humanities flourish. We support the island’s arts community by fostering collaboration and facilitating public engagement. ASSISTANCE DOGS NORTHWEST, located on Bainbridge Island, provides highly skilled Assistance Dogs to children and adults with disabilities and other special needs. All Assistance Dogs and lifetime follow-up support are provided free of charge to recipients. BARN offers classes and well-equipped workshops for eleven craft disciplines. It is a place where people of all ages and skill levels gather to learn, teach and inspire one another with craftsmanship and community service. BAINBRIDGE CHINESE CULTURE & ARTS introduces students to the language and culture of one of the world’s great civilizations. BAINBRIDGE CHORALE and its affiliate the Olympic Girls’ Choir present professionally-performed choral music concerts several times a year, in addition to hosting public events like the annual Messiah Singalong and Community Caroling in December. BAINBRIDGE COMMUNITY PIANO ASSOCIATION owns and maintains the grand piano in Huney Hall at Waterfront Park Community Center. It presents eight professional concerts of jazz and classical music in the concert series First Sundays Concerts. BAINBRIDGE COOPERATIVE NURSERY SCHOOL provides quality preschool education for children ages 3-6. We have been learning through art and play since 1963. Donations through OCFA provide scholarships for tuition assistance. BAINBRIDGE ISLAND-KITEZH offers a life-enriching and intense cultural, intellectual and physical experience for Bainbridge Island sophomores and juniors. Along with performing local community service, this year we will be spending three weeks in Nepal. BAINBRIDGE ISLAND 4H is a multi-aged youth development club that helps members “learn by doing” skills to lead, serve and change their community and world. BAINBRIDGE ISLAND AMBULANCE ASSOCIATION is a tax-exempt 501(c) (3) nonprofit public benefit corporation. We operate 24/7/365, and perform 1000 transports annually, ensuring access to all at the lowest possible cost. We still make house calls. BAINBRIDGE ISLAND CHILD CARE CENTERS is renowned for our professional and nurturing staff, creative and enriching programs, and strong community connections. We are expanding to support the needs of working families. BAINBRIDGE ISLAND DOWNTOWN ASSOCIATION’S mission is to build community through a vibrant downtown economy. BIDA produces downtown events like First Friday Art Walk, Trick or Treat Downtown, and a six-week calendar of Holiday events. BAINBRIDGE ISLAND FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY supports Bainbridge Public Library by raising money through book sales. We help fund many of the library’s activities as well as contribute to our Endowment Fund. BAINBRIDGE ISLAND FRUIT CLUB enhances local gardens and our community through fruit growing education and community service projects. We educate through seminars, fruit shows, local orchard tours, meetings, workshops, and publications.
BAINBRIDGE ISLAND LAND TRUST preserves and stewards forests, shorelines, watersheds, wetlands and scenic vistas. Over 1330 acres of land has been conserved, with 1000 acres open to the public. Donations support continuing preservation efforts. BAINBRIDGE ISLAND MUSEUM OF ART is a cultural hub connecting art, education and community today and for generations to come through arts exhibitions, events, programming and partnerships. BAINBRIDGE ISLAND PARKS FOUNDATION supports a thriving system of parks, trails and open spaces. Contributions help to build and maintain island trails and fund improvement projects for our beloved public parks, forests and beaches. BAINBRIDGE ISLAND PONY CLUB (BIPC) provides a program of education in horse care, riding and mounted sports of all kinds, developing responsibility and leadership skills through horse care and sports. BAINBRIDGE ISLAND ROPE SKIPPERS is a competitive jump rope team that promotes the exciting sport of jump rope as well as exercise, leadership, and sportsmanship for today’s youth. BAINBRIDGE ISLAND ROWING is a 501(c)(3) organization growing a multigenerational Kitsap County rowing community. Since BIR’s start in 2001, we’ve helped change hundreds of lives through the positive physical, social, and psychological impacts of rowing. BAINBRIDGE ISLAND SENIOR COMMUNITY CENTER strives to energize, enrich, and empower seniors by providing opportunities to keep them healthy in body, mind and spirit and to assist them in living as productively and independently as possible. BAINBRIDGE ISLAND SPECIAL NEEDS FOUNDATION operates an activity program for adults with developmental disabilities, focusing on quality-of-life enhancements which increase physical health, mental well-being, and social interaction. Additionally, the program provides respite for caregivers. BAINBRIDGE ISLAND SWIM CLUB BOOSTERS is a board that supports a year-round competitive swim team by fundraising efforts and putting on swim functions. BAINBRIDGE ISLAND VISUALLY IMPAIRED PERSONS SUPPORT GROUP provides education and support to blind and low-vision persons, helping them function to their fullest by giving practical information and connecting them with resources that promote independence. BAINBRIDGE ISLAND VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS ASSOCIATION members have served as firefighters and emergency medical technicians on Bainbridge Island since 1942. Funds raised support firefighting, emergency medical services, rescue, public safety education, member training related equipment purchases. BAINBRIDGE ISLAND YOUTH ORCHESTRA provides young musicians the opportunity to perform orchestral music at a high degree of artistry while improving technical skills and fostering collaboration, teamwork and community involvement. BAINBRIDGE ISLAND YOUTH SOCCER (BIFC) is a youth soccer club on Bainbridge, and we serve approximately one-fourth of all Island families. BAINBRIDGE OMETEPE SISTER ISLANDS ASSOCIATION supports health issues, scholarships, school and student needs, and community projects on Ometepe, but is always trying to connect people of the two islands through everything we do.
BAINBRIDGE YOUTH SPORTS ACCESS FUND helps eliminate the financial barriers to Bainbridge High School youth participating in sports. Grant funds are distributed to Bainbridge High School and distributed via the school’s existing confidential protocol. BATTLE POINT ASTRONOMICAL ASSOCIATION provides an observatory, planetarium, & telescopes dedicated to education of science and astronomy specifically. Programs include monthly public lectures, BPAstro Kids, school field trips and other outreach programs. BLOEDEL RESERVE, recognized as one of the country’s most original and ambitious public gardens, features 150-acres of woodlands, ponds, meadows, and wildlife habitats, and 12 distinct award-winning gardens. We help people live longer and healthier lives through our scientific breakthroughs and provide lifesaving transfusions to 55,000 patients each year. BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OF BAINBRIDGE ISLAND provides safe, positive, and fun after-school programs, summer and holiday day camps, and leadership and service opportunities for teens through volunteerism. Transforming lives of at-risk and homeless youth through crisis intervention, street and school outreach, drop-in centers, case management, housing, mentoring, and job training. COMPASSIONATE LISTENING PROJECT is a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering individuals and communities to transform conflict and create cultures of peace through workshops, facilitator certification and training delegations to conflict and post-conflict zones. CRISIS CLINIC OF THE PENINSULAS is a 24-hour telephone service that provides a non-judgmental listening ear to people in crisis or who simply need to talk to someone. GEAR GRINDERS: BAINBRIDGE ISLAND MOUNTAIN BIKING CLUB supports the Gear Grinders co-ed 6th to 12th grade mountain bike teams. Our programs include: rental and homeownership housing, HomeShare and Independent Living. Meetings are at Grace Church and childcare is provided. MONTESSORI COUNTRY SCHOOL educates children from birth through grade six in the Montessori Method.
