Kitsap County homeowners usually have lots of ideas when it comes to remodeling their house — or dreams about buying the perfect new-construction home. But when it comes time to put those plans into play, they often will raise their arms in confusion. So, what’s the first step for them to take? Who can be trusted to do the work? And just what will this remodeling project cost? Before embarking on an ambi-
tious undertaking to either remodel or build from the ground up, home remodeling experts suggest homeowners talk to those in the home business to gain a better understanding of the basics. Home designers, contractors, craftspeople and financing lenders can break down the daunting task by detailing costs, viability and affordability. A good place to visit them in one place is at a home and remodeling show. And fortunately for people considering taking on that challenge, there will be a home-themed show right here in Kitsap County. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 7, the Kitsap Building Association once again is sponsoring the Peninsula Home & Remodel Expo at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds Event Center’s Kitsap Sun Pavilion, Presidents’ Hall and surrounding outdoor areas in Bremerton. Tickets are $10 for a single All Access Pass, which allows unlimited access both days; $6 for single-day general admission; and $5 for seniors, military and teens. Children 12 and younger are admitted free. Andy Arrants, the association’s director of membership and public relations, said homeowners should consider the expo as a one-stop shopping event where they can speak with experts and professionals who can help add texture and definition to their remodeling or home-buying plan outline. “The expo is an event where homeowners can gain some insight about how to bring their ideas to reality,” Arrants said. And the sponsoring association he represents, KBA, is purposeful in its desire to help Kitsap County residents wanting to own their own home or improve their existing place. “The KBA’s overriding goal is to promote affordable housing in the county,” he said of the association, which represents 300 members, who are mostly home builders and affiliated home construction firms. Home, bath and kitchen designers and remodelers will be on hand at the expo to share their ideas, particularly those who have followed recent trends in the home building and remodeling industry. Vendors will be there to demonstrate

A highlight of this year’s expo, Arrants said, will be an instructional module called “Land to Home,” where kids and even adults can learn the ins and outs of building a house from experts among well over 100 vendors on site. Also expected to be entertaining is the “Construction in Motion” excavator races that will take place from noon to 4 p.m. on both days. And sev-
eral speakers, including KOMO Radio’s Tami Michaels and Molly McCabe of A Kitchen That Works LLC, will conduct seminars throughout the run of the
show. Also on site will be Mixx 96.1, whose radio personalities will broadcast from the expo.

With the fall season just around the corner, here are five projects to keep in mind for maintaining your home these coming months. GUTTERS AND ROOF CLEANING This project is important because you want your roof and gutters to be clean and cleared for the most enduring months of weather. It also will help the gutters work properly, which will prevent roof leaks and foundation issues. Cleaning your roof will also slow down potential moss growth. PREPARE YOUR FIREPLACE Hiring a chimney sweep is not a bad idea. It is recommended that chimneys be swept once a year to remove any debris. You’ll also went to check for damage on the chimney itself and make sure that the top is capped so things can’t get in. Burning seasoned hardwoods is recommended, such as oak that has been split and stored in a dry place for at least six months. Try not to overload the fire as smoke can really build up. If it’s too hot, it can crack your chimney. Also, use a spark guard to make sure embers don’t escape the fireplace. TRIM NEARBY BUSHES AND TREE LIMBS You’ll want to consider trimming any overgrown bushes or interfering tree branches that could threaten hitting your residence during a windstorm. Trimming will also help open up surrounding space for sunlight. CHECK ON INSULATION Check on the weather-strips around doors and windows. Those strips are meant to seal any drafts coming in from outside, but they can wear down over time. Replacing them will keep your house much more insu-
lated and warmer for the cold months coming. CLEAN CARPETS Fall is a great time to clean your carpet, especially since they get dirtiest from summer activities. Now is the time to get them cleaned since you will be spending more time inside during the coming months, away from the dark cold weather.

Rob Dunn used to pay about $350 per month during the winter on energy for his home. The bulk of it went toward heating – he had baseboard heaters for his four-bedroom house. “I wanted to find a cheaper option,” he said. “I thought it was really high.” In addition to being a local homeowner, Dunn is also an energy advisor with Puget Sound Energy. In general, Dunn said, if you want to control your energy bill in Kitsap County, the first thing to do is to look at your home heating system. Homeowners in the region spend about 50 percent of their winter
energy bill on heating. “If it’s an electric furnace, how old is it?,” he said. “If it’s baseboard heaters, how many do you have?” Whatever you use, you’d likely benefit from making a switch to a heat pump system over the long term. After an initial outlay of $5,000$10,000 for a ductless system, or $10,000-$20,000 for full ductwork, you’d save up to 70 percent on heating costs during the winter. “Most of our customers have baseboard heating or electric furnaces,” he said. “Either one would greatly benefit from moving to a heat pump option.” A heat pump is an alternative to a furnace or other standalone system. Ideal for temperate climates, heat

pumps absorb heat from outside and transfer it inside. Heat pumps become less efficient in very cold climates, but in the Pacific Northwest, where temperatures rarely dip below freezing, they are up to three times more efficient than electric resistance heating. Most heat pump systems also come with air conditioning. “So that’s a bonus, too,” Dunn said, “especially with summers getting hotter.” For Dunn and his family, after installing a ductless heat pump system – at a cost of about $7,000 – his winter energy bill was reduced by 64 percent, to $125 per month. Puget Sound Energy offers rebates for homeowners switching to a heat pump system – up to $800 for a ductless system and $1,500 for standard. Home heating isn’t the only culprit

when it comes to high energy bills, Dunn said. In the summer months, 50 percent of the average household’s energy bills comes from water heating. It’s important to consider replacing your water heater every 15 years. “What kind of water heater to you have, and how old is it?” Dunn said. “Those are important questions to ask.” Up-to-date water heaters can save up to 60 percent on water heating costs, and PSE offers rebates up to $500 for installation. The rest of a household’s energy use comes from plug-in appliances like televisions and sound systems – about 25 percent during the summer – and lighting, refrigeration, fans and air conditioners – the other 25 percent. For lighting, it’s important to switch from incandescent lights to LED.
