It’s a scene you could probably see at a lot of places on the island – a handful of old guys sitting around a table with coffee and some cookies. But this group is a little different from some of the rest. Veterans Coffee Club is a casual, weekly time for military veterans and their spouses to talk about their time in the service and catch up on what people are doing in their lives afterward.
“We joke a lot,” Louis Muehlausen, a retired Marine, said. Jaque Guthrie, whose husband served in the military, said that one person would start a story on their end of the table, and other people would add details to it as it went along. By the time the story was finished, the group would find out that some of them had been in the same places in different planes from each other, she said. “I think its terrific that there’s so much history here,”
Guthrie said. The group first started meeting in the mid-2000s in the old Safeway (now Haggens) on Thursday mornings and it grew as members told their friends. The group is not as large as it once was since some members have passed away or moved. Over the years, they’ve met people who’ve been all over the world. One man, Harold Johnson, was a World War II veteran who had been on

Johnson died in 2016, but the group fondly remembers him and sets up a memorial for him every week at the chair at the head of the table where he used to sit. who had been through Hitler’s youth camps as a child.
“He could tell us about the other side of the war,” Guthrie said. The couple hours spent each week over coffee are special to the people who come regularly. “With other vets we can talk to each other comfortably,” Steve DeAvilla, retired Navy, said.

He said it’s easier to talk to fellow veterans because they have the knowledge from shared experiences that other simply don’t have, and they know the right questions to ask. DNR, Navy partner Petty officer from Oak Harbor supports NATO mission in Europe to protect Hood Canal The state Department of Natural Resources and U.S. Navy entered into an agreement that creates a “restrictive easement” along 32 miles of Hood Canal’s eastern shore.

A 2011 Oak Harbor High School graduate and Oak Harbor native is serving in the Navy, living on the coast of Spain and participating in a critical NATO ballistic missile defense mission while assigned to the guided-missile destroyer USS Donald Cook.
The easement, which covers 2,481 acres of aquatic bedlands, prohibits new construction such as wharfs, piers, platforms and structures for industrial use.
Petty Officer 3rd Class Omani Welch is a logistics specialist aboard one of the four advanced warships forwarddeployed to Rota, Spain, a small village on the country’s southwest coast 65 miles south of the city of Seville. Serving in the Navy is a continuing tradition of military service for Welch, who has military ties with family members who previously served. “My mother and father were officers who served 30-plus years,” said Welch. “My parents are go-getters and very successful at everything they do. It was easy for me to decide to serve.” A Navy logistics specialist is responsible for keeping inventory and ordering high-priority supplies for the ship.

“This partnership strengthens our military preparedness and strengthens our waterways by protecting critical habitat in Hood Canal,” said Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz. “This is truly an example of mutual benefit for our Navy, communities and public waters.” Hood Canal is a “Military Operating Area” for Naval Base Kitsap. Limiting disruption in this area is critical for Navy operations, including research, testing and training.
“The Navy’s ability to use Hood Canal for military operations depends on reducing incompatible development and noise,” said Alan Schrader, Commanding Officer, Naval Base Kitsap. “Through this agreement, the Navy will be able to continue training and testing at Naval Base Kitsap for decades to come.” In 2014, DNR and the Navy entered into a similar agreement to create an easement on 4,800 acres of Hood Canal’s western shore (along Jefferson County and portions of Mason County). With both easements now in place, Hood Canal is protected from further development and noise pollution that may have interfered with Navy uses. The easement also benefits Washingtonians by providing new protections for sensitive marine ecosystems. All 2,4810 acres covered by the easement are designated critical habitat, including eelgrass communities and geoduck tracts.

Military Appreciation Picnic is set Navy to offer disaster preparedness seminar Sept. 12 By MARIA MATSON

September is National Disaster Preparedness Month, and Naval Air Station Whidbey Island is working to ensure locals are prepared in case a disaster strikes. The NAS Whidbey Fleet and Family Support Center is teaming with the NAS Whidbey Emergency Management office to offer a free, two-hour disaster preparedness seminar for military members and their families. The seminar will be on 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, at the Bakerview Restaurant (CPO Club) Ballroom in Oak Harbor. The seminar, in its third year, will focus on the making a plan of action in case of an emergency, ideas for building a disaster kit and resources to stay informed before, during and after an emergency. Donald Allman, director of NAS Whidbey Emergency Management, will discuss man-made and natural hazards that occur on Whidbey Island, and Jim Reynolds, director of the Fleet and Family Support Center’s Emergency Family Assistance Center, will discuss the center’s importance in a disaster as well as the Navy Family Accountability and Assistance System.
“We’ll also have a panel of first responders there to answer questions,” Reynolds said. The groups attending will include the Oak Harbor Fire Department, NAS Whidbey Federal Fire Department, Whidbey Health EMS, Island County Sheriff ’s Office, American Red Cross, Island County Amateur Radio Club, Island County Emergency Management and local Community Emergency Response Team.
At this year’s 18th annual Military Appreciation Picnic hosted by the Oak Harbor Navy League and the Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce, service members and their families will be honored.
The public event will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, on Highway 20 at the property next to the Chamber.
“Great food, great times,” Navy League president Steve Bristow said. “It will show the sense of how Oak Harbor and Whidbey Island have high opinions of the military families.”

“This arrangement is the first of its kind and it’s a strong collaboration,” said VA Secretary Robert Wilkie. “Partnerships like this will help VA continue to improve the way we care for veterans.” As it expands its community care program, VA actively refines its ability to track medication prescribed by community providers. Prior to the arrangement, VA providers would ask patients to inform them about medications filled at Walgreens. With the VA-Walgreens exchange, VA providers can now easily view medications directly that are prescribed to VA-enrolled patients by community providers and filled at Walgreens pharmacies.

As part of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ efforts to improve care coordination for veterans, the department is working with pharmacy services provider Walgreens to coordinate patient and pharmaceutical care for VA-enrolled patients. With the click of a button, VA providers will be able to see the entire medication and immunization history of VA-enrolled patients who receive their prescription and immunization needs at Walgreens.
“This very fun event keeps growing and growing,” Bristow said. “Stop on by.”

“So the family needs to be really well-informed, they need to have their pieces in place so they’re not scrambling,” he said.
“We have four fault lines that run right through this little place we live on,” Reynolds said. “There’s a bridge, a ferry, we’re surrounded by water and there’s volcanoes. It’s not a matter of if, but when.”
It takes about 40 to 50 volunteers to run the event, with assistance from the local Orion Squadron of the Sea Cadets. They are hoping to have 3,000 guests attend throughout the day, Bristow said, up from last year’s showing of 800 due to the rain.
There will be free food, including BBQ pulled pork, hamburgers and hot dogs. Live music will play, featuring soft rock and country.
It’s important that military families learn how to prepare for a disaster independent of their service member, because when disaster strikes, that member is mobilized, Reynolds said.
And living on Whidbey Island, they are multiple possible hazards residents could face, including earthquakes, tsunamis and fires.

Former pilot lands at Whidbey winery By EMILY GILBERT

F
or some, the career change from pilot to winemaker would be a rough transition. For Greg Martinez, “it just made sense.” Martinez grew up in southern California and joined the Navy in 1987. Before he started flying as a Navy pilot, he earned a degree in dairy manufacturing from UC San Louis Obispo and studied enology at UC Davis. He joined the Navy a month after graduating from college. “I just fell in love with flying,” Martinez said. He was sent to NAS Whidbey in 1989. Although he had never heard of Whidbey Island before he joined the Navy, once he was sent here, he fell in love. He also trained pilots for over 20 years. He was a flight instructor with the VAQ-129 squadron and trained pilots on EA-6B Prowler when the Navy still used them, and he was in charge of Growler simulations. Now he is a commercial airline pilot, having left active duty in 1996. His transition to winemaking was a smooth one. He drew from his background in food science and 20 years experience helping a friend
brew beer at Captain City Brewing in Coupeville before it closed. Since he liked wine better, he decided to switch to winemaking, he said.

Now he and his wife, Theresa, have owned Holmes Harbor Cellars outside of Langley since 2005. The European-looking estate looks like something you would find in Italy.
Then there are separate grades for a landing, “no grade, fair and OK,” which are all kept on a board, he said. “No one is going to say that a landing was ‘excellent’ – the best you’ll get is an ‘OK 3-wire,’’ he said.
“I designed it while in Afghanistan on mission,” he said. Martinez said he and his wife are a good team. Theresa has a masters degree in chemistry and knows the science behind the wines. She manages the finances and coordinates events. Martinez plays the role of winemaker, mixing the blends and picking the ones he likes, and is the outward-facing representative of the winery. Martinez said he can make the wine by himself after receiving grapes from Washington vineyards in Walla Walla, Chelan and Yakima Valley. He said the most fun part of the winemaking process is blending. “We never say wine tastes like grapes,” he said with a laugh, and explained the different flavors that appear in the wines. His process of deciding which blend to use takes days and multiple varia-

It’s time for Naval Air Station Whidbey Island and the surrounding community to say goodbye to Commanding Officer Capt. Geoff “Jefe” Moore and welcome aboard a new leader, Capt. Matthew “Flounder” Arny. At a change of command ceremony in August at the base’s Indoor Wash Rack Facility, the transfer of authority to the new commanding officer was made official.
Guest speaker Rear Adm. Dell Bull spoke about the symbiotic relationship between the base and the local community and told Arny that he is welcome as the new commanding officer.
Moore led NAS Whidbey Island for two and a half years, in which time the base was chosen by Installations Command as the top large Navy installation in the country for 2016 and 2018. The base also won numerous other high-level Navy awards.
“I couldn’t be more happy that you’re going to take on the legacy that Jefe left behind and the wonderful commanding officers before him to run the best base on the planet,” Bull said. “Lord willing, the
