It has been an honor for me to chair this historic event for the last five years. With my new leadership role as a city councilmember and as a new business owner, I’m looking forward to passing the responsibilities of this position to the next volunteer. KICKOFF NIGHT FULL OF LOCAL PERFORMERS, GAMES, MOVIE NIGHT AND BEER GARDEN Labor Days has great activity for EVERYONE on KICKOFF night! We’re starting with a Kickball Tournament at 4pm, sponsored by Cronin Athletics.
At 6pm the Labor Days Beer Garden officially opens for the first time! The Kiwanis Club of Black Diamond/Maple Valley are running the beer garden throughout Labor Days as a fundraiser for local community support. Also at 6pm, we bring you KARAOKE and OPEN MIC night for those who have a special talent. Bring your group or club to sing out your special message! Poetry, dramatic interpretations, comedy, magic tricks—all are welcome at the OPEN MIC NIGHT. Voice In The Valley, a performance studio, will be on hand to provide KARAOKE screens and background music if you want it.

AT LABOR DAYS Dogs everywhere are barking praises for the Labor Days celebration. At 10am on Sunday morning, big dogs, little dogs, short– and long-haired dogs will take center stage! Bring your dog to showcase their talent and good looks—or just bring your dog. Pets must be leashed, of course, and gentle. The registration form is on page 34 of this program, and available at our website at blackdiamondlabordays.org; we’ll also have extra forms on hand at registration. Did you ever wonder why Labor Days didn’t have a Beer Garden? So did we! This year we introduce this feature, sponsored by the Black Diamond/Maple Valley Kiwanis Club. The Garden will offer various kinds of beer, and a few choices of wine as well. Kiwanis is a great partner in this new event, because all proceeds that they raise will help local community projects. We hope you will support them! An unknown medieval monk is quoted as saying, “He who drinks beer sleeps well. He who sleeps well cannot sin. He who does not sin goes to Heaven. NATURAL BEAUTY ALL AROUND BLACK DIAMOND Black Diamond’s parks, recreation, trails and open space areas are a vital component of the health and well-being of the community. Access to these places contribute to Black Diamond’s physical, mental and environmental health as they support the City’s economic vitality and provide valuable fish, wildlife and vegetation habitat. City residents and visitors enjoy access to a system of citywide and regional parks, trails, and open space areas.
The City parks, recreation, trails and open space system comprises about 5% of the total city land area and includes a range of uses from conservancy to active play areas. Lake Sawyer, the fourth largest natural lake in King County, offers public access for boating, water skiing, swimming and fishing. Other agencies, such as King County and Washington State Parks, also provide significant recreational and open space opportunities for Black Diamond residents.
All in all, Black Diamond and other public and private agencies have amassed an impressive amount of open space acreage. Much of it encompasses and preserves valuable streams, wetlands and habitat conservation areas. he City of Black Diamond was incorporated in 1959, but was first established as a community in the late 1880s for the mining of coal. At the turn of the century the town was a major exporter of coal in the region. The Pacific Coast Coal Company in Black Diamond became the largest coal mining operation on the West Coast. Some historic buildings retain their original locations. A rich history surrounds the City of Black Diamond from the famous Black Diamond Bakery to the Black Diamond Museum of History.

Black Diamond offers a warm and friendly rural, small town atmosphere with spectacular mountain views. The city is nestled in the foothills within miles of the beautiful Green River Gorge and Flaming Geyser Park. The City is on the verge of growth. At 4,160 citizens, population projections may reach above 20,000 in the next 20 years. Over the past several years, major annexations have increased the population and acreage of Black Diamond. The annexation of the Lake Sawyer area in 1998 doubled the number of citizens. Recent annexations
in the City’s urban growth area have increased the city’s size by approximately 1,600 acres. Unlike other communities, the city has stood firm to its vision and growth strategies as identified with the community and captured in the Comprehensive Plan. As the final pieces fall into place, Black Diamond is in the position to allow growth to occur in a well-planned, environmentally sensitive manner that protects the rural character of our community.

In the year 2035, Black Diamond will be a beautiful, friendly community based on a rich historic heritage and exceptional natural setting, with a small-
town atmosphere. Forested areas and open space remain, while development maintains a healthy balance of moderate growth and economic viability. The economic base will be a mix of retail, industrial/Business
Park, office, tourist and local cottage industries. Residential development will be a mix of types, sizes, and densities, clustered to preserve maximum open space and to access a system of trials/bikeways/greenbelts which connect housing, shopping, employment, with nearby regional parks and recreational facilities. Citizens actively participate in an effective and open government decision making process that reflects community values. This crowd-pleaser will again be part of our lineup on Monday after the parade. So grab a bit of shade, a bag of free peanuts and take a break from the rush; it’s Labor Day and a perfect day to picnic as you bask in the freedom of late summer in Black Diamond.
