Festival reflects island history, creativity

ashon’s summer festival, currently known as Strawberry Festival, has been going on in some form since 1909. The tradition of islanders getting together for a massive celebration is part of our culture. We use this holiday to show off our talents, support our causes and connect with each other. In every era, the island’s festival captured the hearts and creative talents of Vashonites. Vashon has a lot of creative people. From musicians to brewers, from painters to donut makers, from nonprofit groups banding together to bring change, to our local entrepreneurs who do more than just make a living, Festival is a time to celebrate and relish all that is created on Vashon. You see this creativity in the way people greet each other, or walk in the parade, or volunteer for their favorite nonprofit, or play their heart out on stage,

or display their art for you. You also see it in the way that the festival is set up. There are so many talented committed people who work hard to make this event spectacular. As you read this, you may be sitting right next to one of them. Festival is a community

event, and while insurance company risk assessments, lawyers and bureaucrats change some of the structure of how this happens, the spirit is still the same as in years gone by. We continue to carry the name Strawberry Festival to honor the

farmers who made us nationwide leaders in strawberry production. There was a time when strawberries were so integrated into the fabric of Vashon life that families told tall tales about them. In fact the festival pin was created by a local artist whose family has been on the island for generations and is an allusion to a family joke that Vashon strawberries grew so big that you needed to cut them with an axe. We at the Chamber of Commerce are honored to be a part of this grand island tradition. We are inspired by the massive support of our sponsors and the efforts that volunteers, artists and performers put into Strawberry Festival. Festival’s grand parade kicks off Saturday festivities

t is said that people on Vashon consistently plan for two things, ferry delays and marching in the Strawberry Festival Grand Parade — an annual tradition for many. The parade features a great mix of traditional favorites with those that speak to Vashon’s uniqueness. It is the event to see and been seen in. This year it will feature marching ukulele bands, floats, island businesses, animals, costumes, drill teams, community groups, performance art, a marching band and, of course, antique tractors. The parade starts just past the south end of town and proceeds through the heart of town, ending at the Ober Park’s Park & Ride lot. Performance areas for parade participants will be in front of the Voice of Vashon Studio, the intersection of Bank Road and Vashon Highway, Pandora’s Box and in front of the Vashon Library. Floats and vehicles will park on the east side of Vashon Highway between 171st and Gorsuch Road for further viewing.

The grand marshal will announce the winner of the Grand Marshal Choice Award — the marshal’s favorite parade entry — at 1 p.m. at the Ober Park Stage. The winner will receive a trophy to display for the year. The parade will begin at 11 a.m. Sat-

urday, July 21. Watch for the fire engine leading the way. As is tradition, at 10:45 a.m. the Kids Parade will start before the Grand Parade begins. Kids (and parents or caregivers) should gather in front of the Methodist church if they would like to participate.

Vashon Strawberry Festival and Mukai In 1909, when the ﬁrst Strawberry Festival began, the Mukai’s strawberry farm was one of the largest on the Island. Drop in for a visit to the Mukai Farm & Garden, the former site of this thriving farm and now in the process of restoration and preservation. Walk the Japanese stroll garden and visit the charming home built in 1929 that is on the National Historic Register. Learn the signiﬁcant history of our Japanese American neighbors and friends on Vashon. The past is present. Friends of Mukai will host House and Garden tours on Saturday, July 21, 1:00 – 4:00. On Sunday, July 22, only the garden will be open for self-guided tours. Special strawberry treats await Saturday visitors! 2018 Vashon-Maury Island Strawberry Festival

Run, walk in Saturday’s Burby For the 38th year, the Bill Burby Inspirational 10K Run and 5K Run/ Walk will allow Strawberry Festival revelers a chance to stretch their legs and burn off the festival food calories. On the morning of Saturday, July 21, dozens of runners and walkers of all ages and skill levels will lace up their running shoes and take part in the event. New this year, the 10K course has been updated, with just one turnaround instead of two. It also has more balanced elevation gain and loss and an opportunity to run faster times. The new 10K course follows the existing 5K course to start out, and then continues along SW Dilworth Road, then follows SW Van Olinda Road until it becomes 91st Ave. SW. The turnaround is the intersection of SW 159th Street, with the second half of the race reversing back to the finish line. The 5K course remains the same route as previous races. Registration fees for those who register by July 19 are $25 for adults and $12.50 for children,

18 and under. Race eve registration — also new this year — will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 20, at Windermere Vashon, 17429 Vashon Hwy. SW. Fees that evening will be $35 for adults and $20 for children. Day of race registration begins at 7:15 a.m. Saturday, July 21, with fees increasing to $40 for adults and $25 for children. Fees go to support Vashon High School athletic teams and provide the annual Bill Burby Wellness Scholarship to a high school senior who has demonstrated a healthy lifestyle. The race is in honor of Bill Burby, a beloved teacher and coach at Vashon Island High School, who was dedicated to island youth sports and healthy life choices. Top finishers will receive gift certificates from Northwest Sports or training certificates from CoreCentric. Ten-visit punch cards to the Recess Lab climbing wall will be awarded to the top boy and girl finishers in each category. For more information and to register, visit billburbyrace.org.

Fun for kids: At Vashon Theatre Honor island’s history with evening soiree and around festival grounds The Free Range Fun Zone follows in the great Vashon tradition of having a space for kids to run free and play. Contained within the Vashon Theatre parking lot, the Fun Zone will feature bounce houses and rides. There are no confusing ticket sales for the kids’ zone; just purchase a kids’ zone bracelet at Vashon Theatre for unlimited use of the attractions in the theater parking lot, and they also get a day movie pass to the Incredibles 2. For the parents, there will be a beer garden to relax and watch the little ones play their hearts out. Venture out of the Free Range Fun Zone, and you will find several other thrilling attractions spread throughout Strawberry Festival. A climbing wall will give you a great view of festival, and giant inflatable bubbles and bungee trampolines will be located in Parker Plaza between Doug’s Auto and Fair Isle Animal Clinic. Hosting the first event of the Strawberry Festival is a tradition at the Vashon- Maury Island Heritage Association. The tradition continues with the eighth consecutive event named for the fifth Strawberry Festival queen, Melissa Lucy Jaynes, crowned at age 104. This year’s event, “Miss Lucy’s Soiree,” at the Vashon Heritage Museum, will feature an open house from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, July 20, featuring live music by the acclaimed jazz ensemble “Some’tet,” and happy hour refreshments. There will be a last chance to bid on the silent auction and an opportunity to enjoy the museum’s exhibits and to purchase raffle tickets for a cash prize of $1,000. The Heritage Association is continuing a twofor-one membership drive and hopes to welcome new members who come to the museum or join online via the website, VashonHeritageMuseum.Org. Members receive a 10 percent discount for books and other items. The discount is applied to tickets for the steamboatVirginia V Cruise, a signature event offering a historic perspective of the island’s shoreline.

2018 Vashon-Maury Island Strawberry Festival

Start each day at the pancake breakfast When you wake up for Strawberry Festival, you’ll want go to the Pancake Breakfast. This tradition starts out parade day right. But you can do it both mornings of festival weekend: 7 to 11 a.m. July 21 and 8 a.m. to noon July 22. The breakfast, held in the IGA parking lot, is hosted by the Sportsmen’s Club. The menu will be about the same as in years past: pancakes, sausage patties, orange juice, milk, coffee, strawberries and other pancake fixings. Tickets are $5 for kids, $10 for adults and $8 for seniors. The breakfast is hosted by the Sportsmen’s Club, dedicated to the ideals of sportsmanship, outdoorsmanship, conservation and general camaraderie. The Sportsmen’s Club runs several events during the year, from shotgun and handgun handling classes to a kids’ fishing derby. The club also runs the Vashon Sportsmen’s Education Association, a scholarship philanthropy that awards up to six scholarships a year. Proceeds from the breakfast help fund this scholarship. Classic car parade is a crowd pleaser Each year the Tom Stewart Memorial Classic Car Parade rounds out the Strawberry Festival’s offerings. This year it will take place at 11:45 a.m. on Sunday. Unique and vintage cars representing multiple eras from across the Pacific Northwest will show their colors. Once the parade ends, attendees will be treated to close-up views of the classic rides. The visual trip through automotive history will start at Vashon Center for the Arts. Drivers will head north on Vashon Highway through town to Bank Road. There, they will turn east (left) and turn left again onto 103rd (the street behind IGA). Then they will turn left onto 178th Street and pass in

front of the post office. From there, they will head up 100th Avenue — in front of IGA back to Bank Road. After the parade, they will park on Vashon Highway between Bank and the theater after the parade.

The best viewing will be along Vashon Highway from Bank Road to the theater and at the fourway intersection in town. The parade is a memorial to the late businessman and owner of Misty Isle Farms, Tom Stewart.

Vashon Islandâ€™s population nearly triples during Strawberry Festival weekend, and organizers recommend taking advantage of the shuttle and Metro buses. Shuttle stops have signs, and visitors can wave the shuttle down if in a safe place for it to pull over. Accessible vehicles are available upon request. Please tell the shuttle driver, and they will request one at your stop. The north-end shuttle runs from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. The shuttle will attempt to meet ferries, pick up passengers along the way and drop them off at Ober Park. Return trips pick up at Ober Park. The last shuttle leaving Ober Park back to the ferry will be at 6:30 p.m. Saturday and 5:30 p.m. Sunday. The south-end shuttle runs from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. It will meet arriving ferries and drop visitors at the Vashon Senior Center then proceed to Agren Park and back. Return passengers can catch the shuttle at the senior center on Bank Road or the Chevron station in town. The last shuttle leaving the senior center for the south-end ferry will be at 6:30 p.m. Saturday and 5:30 p.m. Sunday. The cost for the shuttle is $2 each way per per-

Road closures

Vashon Highway is closed through town during Strawberry Festival. Traffic is routed onto Cove Road, 107th Avenue, Bank Road, 103rd Avenue, 100th Avenue and 178th Street. 100th is for northbound traffic only, while 103rd is for southbound traffic. For a detour map, see vashonchamber.com.

Bus service The regular Saturday and Sunday Metro bus schedules will be in effect, and the buses will follow a detour around town. Times will vary slightly from the regular schedule. Get complete bus schedules online at kingcounty.gov/depts/ transportation/metro/schedules-maps.aspx.

Parking and permits Those who drive to town will find parking scarce, and many roads to town will be closed much of the weekend. A limited number of disabled parking permits will allow some to park closer to town. Call the chamber of commerce at 463-6217 to obtain one.

Parking will be offered at the Island Funeral Services lot Saturday. All-day parking is $5 and benefits the Vashon Senior Center. Access to the parking lot will be via 100th Avenue. Head south on 100th Avenue at the four-way stop by the post office. The road ends, and cars must drive on grass to get to the lot. Follow the signs. Reserved parking is also available at the Vashon Presbyterian Church on Saturday only by donation. Money gathered will support Vashon Youth & Services. MUSIC Vashon is known as an island full of artists and there is no shortage of those of the musical variety. Strawberry Festival serves as the ideal occasion to showcase both homegrown talent and that from other parts of the region. This year, six stages will offer live, local music from dozens of bands playing nearly every genre from blues, soul and rock ‘n’ roll, to country, big band and folk. Several bands are returning favorites, but many are new to Vashon.

Among the six stages is the VARSA Youth stage, where young musicians will showcase their talent. That stage is becoming part of Strawberry Festival tradition. A new musical twist this year is sanctioned busking stations — keep an ear out for them. Not to be missed are the street dances, where Portage Fill and other bands with big sounds will get you swinging. Hang on to this handy guide and enjoy Vashon’s rich music scene. Beer Garden Stage The Van Redeker Band 6 - 7 pm T he Van Redeker Band performs dynamic interpretations of music’s greatest songwriters, including T he Beatles, Bonnie Raitt, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Bob Dylan, as well as groove-infused originals by veteran songwriter Daryl Redeker. T he group is known for its energetic performance style, lush vocal harmonies and non-stop, dance-crazed rock ‘n roll love.

Loose Change 7:30 - 11:30 pm Loose Change has been entertaining crowds at private parties, local festivals and other venues for over 15 years. Lead singer Troy Kindred fronts the band with his powerful Joe-Cocker-meets-James-Brown voice and his passion for entertaining. Keyboard player and music director Kevin Pottinger is the anchor of the band, pulling together an assortment of players and vocalists to create a fun musical and stage show.

US Bank Stage The Bad Decisions 7 - 8 pm “ T he Bad Decisions” are setting Vashon Island on fire. T hey’ve been building a buzz since they started conspiring on heavy originals and hard rock covers. T he band started in late 2017 when Tim Norton from Regional Faction and Scotty Hayes from Morphius started collaborating with singer songwriter extraordinaire Gregg Curry from Ragged Glory, Ghost Dance, Branch Ricky and a brilliant solo career. T he Bad Decisions have a unique sound, and they’re determined to rock hard until the wheels fall off.

The Jennifer Stills Band 8:30 - 9:30 pm Jennifer Stills has been a singer/songwriter for over two decades now. She is the daughter of the American rock musician Stephen Stills and has been playing her sultry, soulful songs from LA to Hollywood, Phoenix to Nashville and now Portland to Seattle. Needing a quiet, comfortable and inspiring place to continue to develop herself and her music, she now calls Vashon home. She falls in love with each new town she plays in, and the feeling is mutual.

Subconscious Population, a band that everyone knows, is a huge part of island history when it comes to music. T he band is back at it and having a blast, blazing through their classic songs, as well as creating their own spin on some very cool covers. T hese boys are having some fun, and if you’re lucky, you’ll hear some of that from your porch — if the wind carries it just right.

Snapdragon Stage The Jamie Jackson Band 6 - 6:45 pm Jamie Jackson is a passionate singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Seattle. Over the years she has performed in a variety of bands, playing guitar, bass, keys and drums along with singing lead and backing vocals. In 2010, Jamie launched her solo career. What emerged was raw and powerful — a series of bluesy rock songs ranging from gut-wrenching to pure comedy. Her powerhouse voice is a one-of-a kind soulful, smoky blend often compared to Adele, Pink and Janis Joplin.

Since 2011, Luke McQuillin and Jon Whalen have coproduced One Lucky Guy — a live music show with a full band and six female vocalists — and The KVSH First Birthday Bash Extravaganza. They’ve pulled together a one-off band called Shak-A Stik for a show at the Red Bicycle Bistro and Sushi. For the last two years, they co-produced the KVSH First Friday Live on the Highway Live music series at the KVSH Jean Bosch Memorial Studio in downtown Vashon Island. This year at Strawberry Festival, they will drag some friends onto the stage and throw down a rocking set.

Some’tet 8:30 - 9:30 pm Some’tet evolved from a weekly jam on Vashon during the summer of 2015. The overall sound is almost West Coast cool — but with some wicked curves. One part composed, one part improvised, a hint of neo-bossa rhythms, touches of free jazz, plus a bit of old-school soul. Some’tet gigs every Sunday at Vashon’s Snapdragon Café and regularly throughout the Puget Sound region. Last year they were one of four bands selected for the annual EarShot 2nd Century Jazz Festival in Seattle.

Saint Ophelia brings an Indie Folk Rock sound to the stage with their mixture of originals and select covers. Rebekah Bevilacqua Kuzma and Joseph Panzetta head up the band with their vocals and acoustic guitars. They sing harmonies and trade lead vocals on a mixture of songs that run the gamut from rocking to spacious. They are backed up by a stellar ensemble that includes Michael Marcus on bass, Dan Tyack on pedal steel and Wesley Peterson on drums.

Bill Brown just got back from Mexico where he performed with several groups. T he rest of the Kingbees have many other projects and continue to play as T he Tonze, an exciting four-piece group that plays danceyour-shoes-off music when Bill is not there. T his year the Kingbees are doing several outdoor concerts and a few club gigs.

Beer Garden Stage Gregg Curry/Ragged Glory 1 - 2 pm

Gregg Curry’s songs dig deep into the roots of American music. In his finely crafted original songs, you’ll hear influences from classic rock, soul and blues to the country, bluegrass and gospel of his native Alabama. Performing for over 20 years, Curry has a commanding stage presence and vibrant energy. He now makes his home on Vashon Island.

OneNiteStand 2:30 - 3:30 pm OneNiteStand is a long-time island band with more rocking tunes and incredible new vocals by Arlette Moody — and the good news is they’re ready to show off the new polish. This band is nothin’ but rock & blues with an emphasis on classic rock tunes as well as some original songs.

Tim Couldn’t Make It 4 - 5 pm

Tim Dahms has been called “one of the finest bass players to come out of the islands” and has played with music icons from Steely Dan to Willie Nelson. Now, only making the rare guest appearances, “Tim Sightings” have been known to draw music lovers from around the globe hoping to catch a rare set with this elusive modern music master. Unfortunately, Tim can’t make Strawberry Festival this year, so Doug Pine, Rick Dahms, Michael Marcus, Wesley Peterson and Mike Nichols will be playing in his honor.

One More Mile 5:30 - 6:30 pm

Road worn, but not weary, the latest incarnation of the blues band “One More Mile” includes talent from some of Vashon’s most celebrated musical groups. Over the course of their varied careers, “One More Mile” band members have played many genres of music, while being ever committed to the roots of the blues. Now the five Journeyman players are joining forces to put their unique stamp on Blues classics by Cotton, Muddy, King, Wolf and Wells, while throwing in some funky surprises just for good measure.

1:30 - 2:30 pm Island Jazz Cats is a small jazz ensemble in the spirit of Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck and Stan Getz. With West Coast/cool jazz in their blood, this Vashon Island-born band includes Barry Cooper on trumpet and flugelhorn, Michael Whitmore on guitar, Tim Kehl on keys and Stephen Cooper on drums.

Jamie Nova Sky 3 - 4 pm Following her six years dedicated to the All Female AC/DC tribute, Hell’s Belles (Seattle, WA), Jamie Nova set out to create the music that was manifesting itself within her soul. In 2010 she recorded and released her first album, “ T he Softer Side” (produced by Jack Endino) following with a short tour in T he Netherlands and Spain. Six years later, she has formed an amazing band with the talents of JT Phillips on guitar, Rick Friel on bass and Christopher Kiger on drums. Bringing some happiness and inspiration along with some soul filled music, Jamie Nova Sky is a guaranteed good time for everyone.

the band won the Marlboro Country Music Talent Roundup, with a $5,000 grand prize and the privilege of opening for Alabama, The Judds and George Strait in the Tacoma Dome before a crowd of 20,000. Playing a mix of country rock, Texas swing and straight-up rock, their arrangements are sure to rock.

Portage Fill Street Dance Portage Fill Band 7 - 9 pm Vashon Island’s Portage Fill Big Band has been making music since 1974 and is a perennial Strawberry Festival favorite. Led by director Tony Willing and featuring vocalists Maggie Laird and Lou Mangione, the Portage Fill Big Band opens the Ober Park stage and returns Saturday evening for the festival street dance. Bring your dancing shoes and have a ball with the Portage Fill.

VARSA Youth Stage RISK 2 - 2:30 pm RISK (Rock Island String Kollective), based on Vashon Island, is one of few multi-generational, string ensembles playing traditional, folk and rock music. RISK welcomes a range of string instruments, including violin, viola, cello, guitar, ukulele, mandolin, banjo and the harp. RISK is open to anyone willing to take RISKs with their music and have fun in the process.

Long Day On Mars is a three-piece original rock band located in Seattle. Members include Chuck Van Norman on main vocals and guitar, Fletcher Andrews on drums and Darren Van Norman on bass. T heir sound and energy is high, building on music they love from the 70s and 80s on up.

OurDeadFathers 6 - 7 pm OurDeadFathers, consisting of Christopher Michael Meyer, Randall W. Payne and Dan Infecto, travels the musical roads that speak directly to the heart. With poetic lyrics against a mellow musical landscape that thrills, the band’s semi-orchestral rhythm section is sure to please.

The Great Divide 9 pm - 12 am The Great Divide is a Vashon institution. The allislander band was formed in the early ‘80s and played locally for many years before hitting the “big time,” touring with blues guitar great Elvin Bishop. In 1987

Petrichor is a Vashon teen band composed of Dimitrius Brown (17) and Iris Sackman (17). They started playing together two years ago, with Iris on guitar and Dimitrius playing bass. Since then, they have expanded their skill sets and can now play either instrument. Petrichor doesn’t stick to a particular genre, but they do play a lot of indie and singer-songwriter music. Petrichor is the smell of the earth after it rains.

Down To Funk 5 - 5:30 pm Down To Funk is a group of high school and college musicians with members from Vashon and Seattle who play funk music with elements of jazz and soul. Several members of the band have jazz training and all members draw inspiration from wide influences of both classic and contemporary artists. The music of Down To Funk is defined by tight rhythm and driving bass lines coupled with smooth saxophone melodies and strong, melodic solos.

MUSIC Tambo 6:30 - 7 pm Begun in 2014, Tambo started performing covers of songs for a few years before writing original tunes. A rock band from Maple Valley, Washington, they identify as alternative rock with undertones of blues, hard and classic rock.

Ouch Pouch 8 - 8:30 pm Ouch Pouch was formed in the winter of 2016, bringing together bassist and lead singer Joziah Cladoosby, guitarist Isaiah Montemayor and drummer Chick Green. Ouch Pouch’s original music has a distinctive alt-rock sound, and they are recently released an EP which can be found both on SoundCloud and BandCamp.

Snuff Redux 9 - 10 pm Snuff Redux was formed during the fall of 2013 while Vashon’s own Skyler Ford and Daniel Chesney were struggling artistically within the Seattle city limits. Thrown from their living situation, the two artists reshaped and took control of their lives with rock music. With music about the roads, lost love, and eulogies for disappearing neighborhoods, Snuff Redux is rock ’n roll that recalls fond memories and assures that the future ahead is full of things to come.

Carnival Knowledge 2:30 - 3:30 pm The members of Vashon-based Carnival Knowledge have been playing together in some capacity for years, in genres ranging from rock, to ska, to zydeco crunk, and are thought to be the originators of “peasant rock.” Founded over the fire pit, they bring a warmth to their performance and often smell of smoke. Carnival Knowledge has shared the stage with such performers as Dim Summit, American Whey, Tim Couldn’t Make It and Roxbury Pound.

RiverBend 4 - 5 pm The popular island band RiverBend includes Paul Colwell, Peter Larsen, Dave Lang, Rochelle Munger, Cliff Simpson and Chuck Roehm. With instrumenta-

tion ranging from guitars, banjos, mandolins, fiddle, accordion, harmonica and upright bass, this band has a wide breadth of musical experience and talent that you won’t want to miss.

Sharlet Crooks

Mysterious, captivating and talented, this man will lay down his funky grooves and make you forget about your troubles. Front man for over 30 years for the legendary island band Subconscious Population, Ron has earned the respect of many people – not only with his amazing ability to play many different instruments so well or his song-writing expertise, but for his love of life, his artistic world and the wisdom that he instills upon us all. His spiritual guidance has been the light for many, both young and old,.and his music, well, ask anyone and they will tell you how inspiring it is.

5:30 - 6:30 pm Sharlet Crooks embodies the sound of the modern romantic West. The Portland based four-piece band began with songwriting duo Corinne Sharlet and Zach Hinkelman in the early winter of 2017. Sharlet Crooks crafts a genre-bending sound they call “Desert Americana” by combining melodic, soul-stirring vocals with warm, blues-laced guitar tones, creating a listening experience that evokes the familiar sounds of Wilco and Alison Krauss while capturing a timelessness that speaks to listeners of every generation.

Little Deer 7 - 8 pm “Little Deer” is Lawson Cannon on guitar, Alex Sturbaum on accordion and Brian Lindsay on fiddle. Together they have over 30 years experience in the Celtic and American Old-Time genres. They are equally at home at a contra dance, in a pub, on a concert stage and in the recording studio. They play a delightful mix of fast dance tunes, slow aires and the occasional spirited song. Everyone who happens upon their music stops, listens, smiles, stays till the end and then asks for more.

Pandora’s Box Stage John van Amerongen 1:30 - 2:15 pm Singer/songwriter John van Amerongen has been developing his personal style and sharing his musical talent on Vashon Island for more than 40 years — ever since he stepped up to the mic to share his signature tune, “Truckstop Chili,” and perform with his bluegrass band of the same name. Armed with an open-tuned acoustic guitar, a wry sense of humor and the ability to tell stories of hard-working men and women, he has performed live and delighted radio listeners up and down the Northwest and Alaska coastline from Astoria to Dutch Harbor. Beyond his original maritime and commercial fishing ballads, he remains devoted to classic country, straight bluegrass, harmonic gospel and anything else that celebrates America’s true grit and independent spirit.

Steve Itterly 2:30 - 3:15 pm Steve Itterly is a Colorado-based singer-songwriter who draws from a deep well of American musical traditions to create distinctively personal music that is timeless without being overly nostalgic. Steve’s musical style includes passionate vocals, finger-style prowess and ripping slide guitar. He has shared a bill with greats such as Bonnie Raitt, Taj Mahal, Keb Mo, Steve Winwood, Jack Broadbent, Anders Osborne and Benjamin Booker.

Rachel Harrington 4:30 - 5:15 pm Rachel Harrington’s albums have garnered four stars in Mojo, features on the BBC, and Q Magazine hails her as, “The queen of gothic Americana.” As a sixthgeneration Oregonian, WWU grad and devout Cascadian, Harrington’s music has always been place-based. A Vashon resident for a while now, Rachel was a winner in the 2001 songwriting contest at Merlefest, a finalist in the Sisters Folk Festival songwriting contest, and has supported the likes of Guy Clark, Steve Earle, Gillian Welch and Iris Dement.

John Browne 5:30 - 6:15 pm Progressing from college sophomore to folk-music groupie-worshiper of Tom Rush, Fred Neil, Buffy St. Marie and Bob Gibson in early 60s Miami, John’s musical career has been what he jokingly refers to one long, downward spiral to this present time, but we all know differently. In the San Franciso of 1966, John was present (if stupefied) as an opening act for a number of notable performers, many of them dead, including Frank Zappa, Lenny Bruce, Dan Hicks, T he Dead, T he Doors, T he Quicksilver Messenger Service, Blue Cheer, T he Byrds, T he Airplane, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Mance Lipscomb, Country Joe & the Fish, Art Linkletter, T he Congress of Wonders and others.

Snapdragon Stage Jon Whalen 1:15 - 1:45 pm As a long time, in-your-face island resident, performer, family man and contractor, Jon has made no attempts to simplify or dumb-down his ways of being, almost to the point of fascination. Jon’s Strawberry Festival set for 2018 promises nothing like you’ve ever seen, but promises are made to be broken, so let’s just say folks generally have a good time at his shows.

2 - 2:30 pm Alex Davis Raised on Vashon Island, now based out of New Orleans, Alex Davis is a singer songwriter that blends the sounds of classic country, traditional folk, and blues.

MUSIC Amy Cole 2:45 - 3:15 pm This past spring season, Amy Cole has appeared as soprano soloist for the chorale, alto soloist for the chamber orchestra, as a contestant on the Voice of Vashon, in showcase shows at the Red Bike and in the opera’s production of “The Magic Flute.” As a classically trained soprano with a four-octave range, a solid foundation in the great American songbook, a love for folk and indie, and the inclination to rock, you never know what might come out, though James Taylor, Mike Doughty and a folk twist on songs from other genres are generally safe bets.

JD Hobson 3:30 - 4 pm When outlaw country and Americana meet the delta blues, you get a whole new genre. JD Hobson takes his Virginia Appalachian blues roots and combines it with Seattle’s Americana and rock scene, and a sound is created that has gotten people standing up to take notice. Studying under greats like John Jackson, David Honeyboy Edwards and John Cephas at Centrum in Port Townsend helped JD hone his craft. The result is that JD has an exceptional feel for most roots music. His ability to grasp every nuance down to the smallest inflection has become his hallmark.

Rooster 4:30 - 5:30 pm Rooster plays their own unique take on an eclectic mix of “free range” rock, blues, pop, new wave, soul and funk, along with many new Rooster originals from their upcoming album release. Rooster has rocked the last five Strawberry Festivals, many solo dates at the Red Bike and Snapdragon, VOV Live on the Highway appearances on KVSH FM, as well as festivals, concerts and private functions. Founders Rick Doussett (guitar/ vox) and Ken Widmeyer (keys) are joined by Andy Doussett (bass/vox) and Stephen Cooper (drums/vox).

Slingshot Around The Sun 9 - 9:45 pm Slingshot Around the Sun is the Vashon-based techno project of Jason Dean, a veteran of the Seattle music scene. Inspired by the techno sounds that have been prevalent in clubs and on labels like Tresor and Berghain based in Berlin, Jason brings tracks that could easily fit in peak time club sets and tracks that take on a more experimental and/or ambient feel. Slingshot Around the Sun is one of many current electronic projects that relies on hardware synthesizers, drum machines and samplers in a live setting. Foregoing tracks triggered by laptops and introducing elements of improvisation, each set takes on a different character and relies on the collective energy of performer and crowd providing a singular and unique experience each show.

KINGSLEY 10 - 10:45 pm Kingsley is the solo alias for producer and composer Kingsley Northcott. Raised in London England and now a Vashon resident, Kingsley will guide you through a journey of different genres throughout the electronica and dance music realm. At Strawberry Festival, Kingsley will be closing out the Snapdragon stage on Saturday night, mixing a live set with music that will create a positive vibe and be sure to resonate a fresh and uplifting frequency. With the last five years mainly focused on polishing the craft of audio engineering and sound design, Kingsley has been releasing new music in 2018 and will continue to release original mixes and songs through his “Kingsley Frequency” social channels.

Beer Garden Stage Hot Rod Red

A fixture in the Vashon Island music scene, this fourpiece plays only occasionally and brings new music to the show every time. Jon Whalen on rhythm guitar and Dorsey Davis on bass share the lead vocals and songwriting duties. The lyrics speak to roaming from here to there, falling in an out of lust, the mundane and magical. From the sleepy beginnings eight years back to the rough and rocking sounds you’ll hear this year, the band is on a long evolutionary curve. Longtime island rocker Richard Lipke and percussionist Emory Medima-Boyajian round out the FieldHands sound from punchy to rolling and many plateaus in between.

7:30 -8:30 pm In spring of 2017, three island-raised friends found themselves all living on Vashon at the same time. Dom Wolczko, Brendan Bric and Nick Hyde began playing and writing music together, and over many months the music and idea of Rabble began to take

Hot Rod Red is a neobilly band that has been taking the Seattle area by storm, including a blistering show at Snohomish Blues Invasion, and most recently at Pub 282 on Camano, where they had the place packed and folks dancing through the whole show. They recently released a CD as well as their first video. Hot Rod Red has been described as “a total dance fest of rock ‘n roll.” The music is based in rock ’n roll and has elements of rockabilly, but with a more “hot-rodded” feel. We call it Neobilly.

2:30 - 3:30 pm The Curvettes (formerly the S Curves) came together in the summer of 2013 as a result of a fun and funky traveling performance party called “The Swamp Bottom Jamboree.” Their debut performance included

cocktail dresses under hip waders in the middle of a pond by candlelight, accompanied by the boisterous bass of a croaking bullfrog. Cleaned up and dressed up (but without the frog), the Curvettes trio is comprised of seasoned Vashon and Seattle performers whether at the Open Space, Blue Heron, Red Bike, Drama Dock, Vashon Opera, Seattle Opera or various gigs over town. The Curvettes – Arlette Moody, Elaine Ott-Rocheford and Stephanie Murray – are a “retro chic” trio that puts their own curve into music nostalgia. The Curvettes are backed by The Straightaways, an acoustic swing combo that puts a nostalgic spin on even the most modern tunes, but isn’t afraid to bust out a beat when they need to. Steve Meyer on upright bass and Marshall Murray on the cocktail drum kit are seasoned performers who provide the backbone. Andre Sapp adds mandolin, ukulele and guitar, depending on what and how many strings he can handle at any given time. Christopher Overstreet brings a stunning array of piano chops, classical technique, and avant-garde sensibilities. Gary Milligan on horn adds some sass and splash.

Poultry In Motion 4 - 6 pm Poultry in Motion, a collection of molting personalities that could hardly be more diverse, do in fact share one common goal, which is passing a good time together. Best described as a “drinking club with a music problem,” the band charter demands that rehearsals be every bit as fun as gigs. So they bring their diverse backgrounds together under cover of music and merriment with no musical theme other than stimulating dancers. Thus, when the Poultry goes into Motion and starts clucking, don your dancing shoes and prepare for anything from country to Motown, rockabilly to zydeco, rock ‘n roll to folk-n-rock, Cajun to swamp pop, plus original compositions that may take origin from any one of the roosters in the band.

US Bank Stage Water Teacher 1 - 2 pm Water Teacher is a lesson in chemistry. Start with a base of love, friendship and hand-crafted originals.

Blue Monster 2:30 - 3:30 pm Blue Monster is an instrumental jam funk band specializing in booty-shaking dance grooves and deep pocket riffs. Founded on Vashon in 2006, all band members are either current or former island residents who have also played in many other local bands over the years. The current line-up features guitarist Ken Jacobsen, keyboardist Tony Mann, drummer Nigel Browne and J.P. Ouellette on bass.

Jason Sees Band 4 - 5 pm Jason Sees Band The Old School Project said this about the band’s latest EP: “Jason Sees Band’s fifth installment has essentially re-defined their sound. A light hearted, electric guitar driven, rock collection. It sharply contradicts Jason’s usual themes of solace and introspection. Troubadour roots be damned, Jason rocks here, and Seattle’s indie music community is finally showing signs of coming to life.”

VARSA Youth Stage Ava Adams 11 -11:30 am Ava Adams is a 16-year-old singer-songwriter from Gig Harbor, Washington. She has been performing since age 11 and has gained quite a following with her heartfelt, original music and unique arrangements of classic rock and pop tunes. Formerly the vocalist for A-Street Blues, Ava has played numerous venues around the Pacific Northwest and as far as Tennessee, recording an original blues EP with her band at the iconic Sun Studio in Memphis. For the past year Ava has been performing as a solo artist, playing countless festivals in Washington and is excited to be taking her music on the road as she travels across the United States this fall. Watch for Ava’s debut solo album of original music to be released soon.

Jonah Winter Cole 12:30 - 1 pm You may have caught a set from Jonah Winter Cole before, performing his originals and grunge/punk covers at one of the last two Strawberry Festivals, at the Red Bike for the Youth Opener program, with his band the Nuclear Quartet at the Skylark Cafe, or on Seattle’s Waterfront Stage for a solo set last summer. Jonah writes much of his own music, and his influences include Nirvana, Green Day, Beach Slang and the Pixies. Already a veteran performer and still barely

into the double digits, he puts on a great show. Don’t miss it.

Paper Moon 2 - 2:30 pm Paper Moon is a daughter/father acoustic folk and country duo whose complex vocal harmonies and deft guitar work remind the audience of the musical heydays of the 60s and 70s. Suitable for families, rainy front porches or intimate coffee houses, they can be heard at wineries, bars and outdoor festivals throughout Washington, Oregon and Northern California.

Abigail Neilson Band 3:30 - 4 pm Abigail Neilson is a 17-year-old singer/songwriter from Tacoma. Storytelling through music is what she does best; she is influenced by artists such as Taylor Swift, Carole King, Stevie Nicks and Tori Kelly. Abigail and her band have spent the past two years playing a wide variety of stages from the most intimate cafes, to large festival stages, and everything in between promoting her debut EP “For The First Time.” Abigail is backed up by lead guitarist Nic D’Ambrosio, bass guitar player Cobi Adams and drummer Aiden Parks. Ober Park Stage Michael Shapiro & Jim Burke 11:30 - 12:30 pm Michael Shapiro, a 40-plus year veteran professional guitarist and multi-instrumentalist, has recently returned to Vashon and joined long-time Portage Fill guitarist Jim Burke. Together the two create an exciting and fascinating blend of traditional Americana, including music ranging from traditional blues to jazz standards. Joining Shapiro and Burke are percussionist Gordy Ryan and Christine Goering, Dona Munday and Mary Litchfield on vocals.

The Flying Mandolinis 1 - 2 pm The Flying Mandolinis all live on Vashon Island, and they perform exclusively on various instruments from the mandolin family. Even though each members participates in at least two other area bands, they have come together for five previous Strawberry Festivals to find a creative outlet for their acoustic string music – and to celebrate the joy of playing together, just for the fun of it. The Flying Mandolinis play a mix of original compositions, American standard covers and world music. Paul Colwell, Jean Richstad, Jasper Forrester, Cliff Simpson and Rochelle Munger play concert mandolin. Steve Amsden plays alto mandolin. Lawson Cannon plays octave mandolin and Dan Brown plays upright bass.

Annie Vergnetti Band 2:30 - 3:30 pm Annie Vergnetti’s music can be described as “edgy folk-rock with a twist of slide and grit.” She is a cofounder of Goddess Get Down, a nonprofit musical showcase for women, and has played multiple festivals, including Pride (Oregon, Washington and Arizona), Go Girl MusicFest, Siren Nation and Out/ Loud Festival. Annie loves improvisation and creating songs on the spot with input from the audience. Using her sketch comedy background, she has played at the national queer comedy festival, Siren Nation’s Broadcast, Curious Comedy and various comedy shows around Portland. Vergnetti has a warm, infectious, creative delivery in all she does and has become a staple of the Portland indie/folk scene.

Loose Change 4 - 5 pm Lead singer Troy Kindred fronts the band with his powerful Joe-Cocker-meets-James- Brown voice and his passion for entertaining. Ultra-talented keyboard player and music director Kevin Pottinger is the anchor of the band, pulling together an assortment of players and vocalists to create a fun musical and stage show. The huge sound of the horn section really sets this band apart, as do the talented backup singers. The band’s red-hot rhythm section – guitar, bass and drums – keeps the beat going and your feet moving. The band’s play list focuses on classic R&B hits from 1960s, interspersed with a few disco and funk songs, touches of gospel and little rockabilly. When Loose Change takes the stage, you know you’re going to have a good time dancing, listening and singing along with your favorite tunes all night long.

Pandora’s Box Stage John Schuh 11:30 am - 12:15 pm John Schuh released his solo acoustic CD “Showtime” in 1994. He has performed with a variety of bands over the years, including the Seattle groups Skinwalkers and The Free Radical Quartet. Schuh is also a collage artist and has been showing his artwork around the island since moving to Vashon in 2014.

Henry Perrin 12:30 - 1:15 pm Henry Perrin grew up in Vermont. One day a tourist asked him, “Have you lived here all your life?” “Not yet,” he replied. Sometime later he threw most of his possessions in a Nissan Sentra hatchback and eventually ended up here. Perrin plays a mix of acoustic rock, folk and blues, ranging from classics to obscure gems, with an occasional original thrown in to keep it interesting.

MUSIC Jim Marcotte 1:30 - 2:15 pm Soulful, bluesy “eclectric” rock — Jim Marcotte brings elements of multiple musical genres to delight the mind with his original music and his interpretations of his favorite artists’ songs. Performing since the tender age of 12, Marcotte has played an array of venues with several different bands, as well as on his own in the 1980s and 1990s in Southern California. Marcotte moved from L.A. to Seattle in 2010, where he found a whole new world of musical experiences, venues and artists to play with. His album of original material, “Own It,” was recorded in West Seattle and released in 2015. Along with his extensive and diverse original songs, Marcotte plays a multitude of covers ranging from classic and current rock, to pop, soul and blues artists.

AnR 2:30 - 3:15 pm AnR, locally sourced on Vashon Island, generally performs as a duo with powerful female vocals, electric guitar and whatever enhancements are needed to render some of their favorite pop tunes in a palette pleasant to the ears.

Snapdragon Stage Some Hat 12:30 - 1 pm Lifelong friends Phil Rosenbaum and Jim Ferrari have been collaborating musically for over 35 years and are a mainstay of the Vashon music scene. Their first Strawberry Festival performance was in 1995, and since then they have performed at festival eighteen times. They were the ‘House Band’ for years at the Blue Heron, playing regularly at art openings and at Vashon Allied Arts Art Auctions, where you would find Rosenbaum soulfully playing their original jazz pieces on grand piano, while Ferrari jammed on the flute. The duo has opened for Greta Matasa, Emmy awardwinning Tingstad and Rumble and several times for Pearl Django. Some Hat continues its musical tradition this year with Rosenbaum playing his classic hollow body Gibson guitar, and Ferrari playing tenor and alto sax.

The Van Redeker Band performs dynamic interpretations of music’s greatest songwriters, including The Beatles, Bonnie Raitt, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Bob Dylan, as well as groove-infused originals by veteran songwriter Daryl Redeker. The group is known for their energetic performance style, lush vocal harmonies and non-stop, dance-crazed rock ‘n roll love. tic and electric blues, roots, folk and soul. O’Neill is a dynamic performer with powerhouse vocals that will knock your socks off and soothe your soul at the same time. O’Neill is often seen on stage collaborating with some of the area’s best musicians.

Erika Lundahl 2 - 2:30 pm Erika Lundahl is a Seattle writer, musician and activist. She employs her classically-trained voice and distinctive “tapping” guitar style to create an enveloping, earth-centered musical space. Her poetic, often autobiographical lyrics inspire poignant and powerful imagery while dealing with contemporary social issues. Her band’s debut album, “Songs of Shattering,” released in 2015, was inspired by the poetry of Edna St. Millay and debuted on CMJ’s top 200 albums of college radio in March 2016. Her recent live album, “Aim for the Center,’’ showcases the moving storytelling and talented performance that Lundahl is known for.

Catbird 2:45 - 3:15 pm Catbird will take to the stage to play a fun mix of old time music and jazz standards. Mary Shackelford and Jim Burke are a husband and wife duo who have been playing together for over four decades. With Mary on the mandolin and Jim backing her up with guitar and banjo, good-time tunes are guaranteed. Get ready to do some toe tapping or even a bit of the old soft shoe.

These Guitars Say Sorry 3:30 - 4 pm These Guitars Say Sorry is an artist who moved to the U.S. from England at the turn of the century, bringing echoes of the music he grew up listening to with him. Now an established performer in Washington State with appearances at Northwest Folklife and several hundred shows around the state to his name, he has honed his show to be about the music from his homeland for sure, but also to tell his story to the audience between songs — making for an engaging performance beyond the music.
