Dear Class of 2018... The roar of the crowd over comes your sense of hearing, sweet blue birds chirp in congratulations, while parents cry because their baby grew up. “Not unto ourselves alone are we born.” When we were mere babes we had the support system of our parents, grandparents, and guardians. Growing up we slowly weened of the daily packed lunches from our Mom & Dad, and learned to find our own way to walk, our own way to be. Once we found that way to be, we were sent off to school. A safe environment for some, but a difficult environment for others. Each and every one of us braved the emotional the trials of middle school, being a freshman infatuated with a senior, we endured the sophomore slump, we ran the Junior Marathon and even survived the disease of “Senioritis”. We did all these as one cohesive body, bonded by the simple commonalities of geographic location, age, and the ability to attend a school equipped to send you into the world with a diploma. However we will leave this school as individuals molded by our shared experiences and our own experiences. We may not have started this journey alone, but as we graduate we will join not the masses of Sequim High School, but we will join the masses of humanity, each one of us headed off to different sectors of society, college, work force, and military. Mason at a young age was into everything. I put up gates, he would climb over them. I locked cupboards, he found a tool to take it apart. At the age of 5, he tied a rope around his neck, stood up on a window sill and jumped. In his mind, he was Spiderman for a moment. He has lived the life of an “EXTREME” kid. As you entered your teenage years I learned you had developed an amazing moral compass. You treat all people with kindness. You have learned know to set boundaries but still have fun with your friends. You know that time spent with your grandparents is never wasted. You are forgiving and non-judgmental. You are humble. Now we are on the verge of another milestone. This one involves big change. This isn’t only about growing up, it’s about being a grown-up. I am forced to step back and watch your life unfold. It will be my biggest challenge, as a mother. Did I do my job right? Have I taught you what you need to know? We might not know exactly what the future holds, but I’m sure I can make a few predictions. I believe you will continue to soar and grow. You will stay true to who you are and you will continue to treat others with kindness. I am trusting you are now ready to be the man God expects you to be. My final guidance as you leave your childhood behind and enter into the adult world. -Don’t ever look down on anyone unless you are helping them up. -Success is measured by who you are, how you treat others and how you lead your life. -Surround yourself with people who remind you of how amazing you are, and respectfully avoid the ones that don’t. -There is no place like home.
