Welcoming in a Plateau summer F
rom the e a r l y morning sun glistening off Lake Tapps and the White River to sunsets lending purple mountain majesty to RAY MILLERMount Rainier, STILL the Plateau EDITOR comes alive day in to day out in the summertime. And every year, there’s always more to look forward to as the Black Diamond, Enumclaw, Buckley, Bonney Lake and Sumner communities continue to grow. In Enumclaw, man’s best friend is getting the treat of their life — a brand-new enclosed
dog park at Ellenson Park is expected to be constructed mid- to late-summer, otherwise known colloquially as the “dog days” of summer. (Fun fact: the phrase “dog days” doesn’t mean it’s sweltering outside, but refers to when the Greek and Romans could observe the dog star, Sirius, rise just before the sun around late July. Thanks, National Geographic!) While not brand-new, the Buckley Summer Series continues into its third year as the Plateau’s youngest music festival, featuring family-friendly performances, live music, and the Buckley Country Market from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays, starting in July. Bonney Lake has many plans for the future, including
huge improvements to its local parks and even the possibility of a city-funded pool. These improvements won’t be ready for a while, but residents and visitors alike can take advantage of Allan Yorke Park’s Snack Shack, where you can rent a paddle board and cool off in Lake Tapps. (And if you need sunscreen in bulk like I do, there’s a new Costco off state Route 410!) Of course, new doesn’t always mean better — make sure to swing by the Bonney Lake’s ever-popular Tunes @ Tapps concert series, which starts July 11 and continues every Wednesday through August. And last but certainly not least, Sumner is hosting its traditional Rhubarb Days on Saturday, Aug. 4 and Sunday,

Oldest fair west of the Mississippi west of the Mississippi. There was a rocky stretch in which King County nearly mandated the fair into extinction. But, attendance more than doubled to 15,700, then jumped to more than 20,000 and has now probably topped 25,000. A big part of the fair’s focus is on live entertainment with performers scheduled throughout the day. There are plenty of newcomers on the 2018 slate along with repeat acts from the likes of the Smilin’ Scandinavians and hypnotist Jerry Harris. All live entertainment is free with gate admission.

Boasting both new attractions and a handful of old favorites, organizers are busily planning for the 156th edition of the King County Fair. The four-day fair kicks off July 19 at the Enumclaw Expo Center. For the fourth year, the fair is being put on by the Enumclaw Expo and Events Association, the nonprofit entity charged with taking care of the 72-acre grounds and all its resources. Organizers are looking to continue a fair turnaround that has seen increased attendance in recent years. The fair has a long history, opening its doors for the first time while Abraham Lincoln roamed the White House. It is billed as the oldest fair

Food vendors always include some traditional favorites – burgers, turkey legs and barbecue, for example – but newcomers are sometimes sprinkled into the mix. Family-friendly acts returning include a hypnotist, mutton bustin’ (kids riding sheep), racing pigs and a display of longhorn steers. The fair will open at 10 a.m. every day, closing at 10 p.m. the first three nights and 6 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $10 at the gate, with $7 presale tickets available at Safeway stores. There are discounted rates for seniors and those in the military and kids younger than 5 are admitted free. Parking is $5.

Discover your inner logger in Buckley Summer is a great time of year to live in the Pacific Northwest with all the activities we can now do outdoors after our long dark, gray and wet winter. Buckley is celebrating the opening of the Foothills Trail to South Prairie. This PAT new stretch of the Foothills JOHNSON Trail was finally completBUCKLEY ed this spring opening up MAYOR what I feel is the prettiest and most interesting section of the trail. This connection of trail has taken
over 30 years to complete but has well been worth the wait. It is now open to bikers and walkers and is heavily being used. Come take a stroll or ride a bike on this new section of trail. Hopefully next year we can celebrate a new trail bridge across the White River and be connected to Enumclaw! The last full weekend in June is traditionally “Log Show Weekend” in Buckley. This is always a fun filled weekend for the entire family. Come see the local loggers compete for prizes in many categories that highlight the skills that they hone on the job. There is a pancake breakfast put on by a local Boy Scout troop first thing Saturday morning followed
by a parade down Main Street at 10 a.m. After the parade meanders through the Street Fair on River Avenue, wander a block further to the Log Show grounds and complete your stay with a stop at the carnival. I have always felt blessed to live here on the Plateau surrounded by all the natural beauty and Mount Rainier in my backyard. There is always something to do from hiking Mt. Peak, walking around Deep Lake or taking a drive up to Chinook Pass. I cannot imagine living anywhere else.

Log Show is Buckley’s time to shine: parade, vendors and competition
The 45th annual Buckley Log Show is planned for the weekend of June 23 and 24 with everything happening in – or near – downtown Buckley. The event honors the small town’s logging legacy, with a healthy nod to both the past and present. A variety of competitive events will keep the crowd entertained both days at the Log Show Grounds. Saturday morning brings the annual parade along Main Street. A week earlier, on June 16, it’s the kids’ time to shine. The Junior Show, also at the Log Show Grounds, features many of the same events, some modified for the younger set. Hang onto your horses at the Rodeo The Enumclaw Pro Rodeo is again heading to the Enumclaw Expo Center, promising a full slate of roping and riding, bulls and broncs. The Expo Center arena will be home to three days of action. Events will kick off Aug. 23 and there will also be shows Aug. 24 and 25. Each night, gates open at 5 p.m. with rodeo action beginning at 7. General admission for each of the performances is $15; it’s $10 for seniors, veterans and kids up to 12 years, but children 5 and younger will be admitted free. Presale tickets are available at Mike’s Western Wear in Enumclaw, The Grange in Issaquah and Country Square in Auburn. Tickets also will be sold at the door. Those attending will be treated
to traditional rodeo fare. On tap will be roughstock events like bareback riding, bull riding and saddle bronc riding; and timed events like barrel racing, breakaway roping, steer wrestling and more. Also, during the three performances, kids between the ages of 4 and 7 (and less than 60 pounds) can climb aboard a sheep and try their hand at mutton bustin’. Again this year, rodeo boosters have added concerts following the Friday and Saturday performances. Organizers again are offering a beer garden and food will be available. The Enumclaw Pro Rodeo is a nonprofit organization that has aimed to raise money for youth development and programs. For more info go to www.enumclawprorodeo.com.

Each summer, the small town of Wilkeson goes big-time the third Saturday in July. The event is the National Handcar Races and, aside from the unique competition, the day brings a morning parade, food vendors, fun for kids and more. This year, the event will be held July 21. The Expo Center also has a slew of exciting events scheduled throughout summer, such as the International Dog Show, Scottish Highland Games and the NW Western Swing Festival just to name a few. These and more are listed on their website so you can make plans with family and friends. The Stars and Stripes 4th
of July Parade is once again being hosted by the Enumclaw Chamber of Commerce. Attending this parade tradition is a great way to begin the July 4th celebration before you head out to the lakes or barbecue gatherings. I wish I could stay forever in Enumclaw
W
hen life led us to Enumclaw on a short-term job assignment, I said whynot? I am always up for an adventure. Little did I know how much I would come to love this sleepy little town near the mounDONA tain. And I wonder – do FRETZ those who live here know GUEST how special it really is? WRITER My first day in Enumclaw I took a walk down Cole Street. Coming from the Seattle suburbs I quickly had to shake off my “city-ness” and marveled that every person I passed warmly greeted me. I was a little leery at first and avoided eye contact but quickly remembered it’s OK to talk to your fellow man, even if you don’t know them. People are nice here. Friendly. They stop and chat. If you need something, you ask. Folks are more than happy to help. One of the best things I did was join the Enumclaw Facebook pages. One day I received a pop up and it said “There are 4 horses running loose down the street.” Within minutes there were a number of comments from people who had taken their ropes and were going to help. A few days later I saw another. “If you are missing your black one-horned goat, he is in my yard.” Still my favorite. Really? A one-horned goat? And so matter of fact, like a strange goat in the yard is normal business. Every day I would see posts of loose turkeys, pigs and always dogs. Lots of dogs. Makes me wonder if fences don’t exist in Enumclaw.
Day after day I would watch people ask for recommendations, ask to borrow something, and every time there was a solution within minutes. It amazed me one day to see a person post they were going for a trail ride and had extra horses if anyone wanted to come along. The community spirit is big here. Neighborly. I bought a bowl at the art shop where all the proceeds went to the food bank. I was told some cheesy bunny jokes while buying an Easter rabbit at the thrift store that supports the M.O.M bus by a volunteer who truly loves his job. Traffic is a strange thing in Enumclaw. I have stood in the intersection of Cole and Griffin at noon with not a car in sight. Cars stop to let you cross the street – a miracle where I am from. In my first days I learned, don’t stand on the curb and look at the other side of the road. You’ll stop traffic. I wound up crossing more than once when I wasn’t planning to, just because traffic stopped. But try to go to Bonney Lake or Maple Valley after work and it will be a very slow crawl. I’ve eaten in every restaurant in town. Several times. And I enjoy each time watching the staff call the customers by name, know their favorites or ask about their family. I’ve learned the names of the baristas at Starbucks, the shopkeepers in town, the clerks at the hotel and they know me, too. I had a nice chat with the chamber of commerce director one day just because I bought a post card. It’s nice not to just be another anonymous face in the crowd. I’ve learned that you don’t need a lot to be happy. I have lived well in my hotel room. The Dollar Store is a treasure trove of just about anything I could need. The grocery

PHOTO BY RAY STILL store makes a fine bowl of soup that is a happy lunch on a rainy day. Visiting the chicks and ducks at Tractor Supply is great entertainment. The Pie Goddess truly does fix everything except my waistline. I’ve seen some pretty amazing rainbows. And when the sun comes out the mountains are spectacular. Enough said. Sure there are issues in Enumclaw. There are homeless. I am sure there are drugs. There is poverty and everything the world is struggling with now. But at its core I have seen that there is still a kindness and decency and desire to be a community in Enumclaw. I think it’s something that is not all that common anymore. I have a month or two here before the job is done. I’d love to move here but my other half says no. Our lives are somewhere else. But for these last few months I’ve been happy to call Enumclaw home. It’s been a nice reminder of what a town can be and I hope you don’t lose sight of that. And you have really great pie.

Expo Center brings wide range of events during summer season The single biggest annual event at the Enumclaw Expo Center is the King County Fair. But that’s just the tip of the crowd-pleasing iceberg. Here’s a list of other events gracing the Expo Center grounds during the summer months. • June 1-2: a community swap meet fills the Les Schwab Hall from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Admission is free, but organizers would really appreciate a $2 donation. For $30, you can rent a space of your own and sell all your unwanted stuff. • June 16-17: a gun show makes a weekend appearance. The event opens at 9 a.m. each day, closing at 6 p.m. Saturday and 4 p.m. Sunday, in the Les Schwab Hall. • June 23: the Men’s Room Redfestival is planned for the entire Expo Center grounds, sponsored by Seattle radio station KISW 99.9. With promotional material billing the event as, “outdoor drinking and other dumb stuff,” this event is like no other in Enumclaw. Attendees can expect everything from belly dancers to freestyle motocross, along with live music, food and beer. Tickets are available at kisw.com. • July 28-29: One of the biggest, most boisterous, events of the summer comes to Enumclaw in the form of the Scottish Highland Games and Clan Gathering. The event fills the grounds with food and fun, music and vendors. It’s quite a spectacle, from the gathering of the clans to the brawny competitors who engage in traditional athletic competition. Enumclaw Chamber keeps things hopping with Fourth, golf and more The Enumclaw Chamber of Commerce is not only growing its membership, but the business-boosting organization is expanding its list of events as well. On the chamber calendar for the coming summer months are the following: • June 6: a “retirement tea” for Enumclaw School District teachers is planned for the Enumclaw High School library. • June 23: like beer? Then downtown Enumclaw will be your destination. The area in and around Cole Street will play host to thirsty attendees who will sample craft beers from Washington breweries. The event runs from 5 to 9 p.m. Tickets are on sale at: https://enumclawspringbeerwalk. brownpapertickets.com. A ticket is good for 10 tastings and a collector glass. This event is for the 21-and-older crowd. • July 4: the chamber’s big “Stars and

Stripes” Fourth of July parade will roll through downtown Enumclaw beginning at noon. The 18th annual event will bring crowds to Cole Street to witness kids, civic groups and businesses, mostly local but some from out of the area. • August 8: the chamber’s annual golf tournament will fill Enumclaw Golf Course with some talented players and some true duffers. Sway. The band covers newer tunes, offering chart-topping hits from the likes of Bruno Mars, Usher, Rihanna, Lady Gaga and Justin Timberlake. There’s also a dash of retro, with songs made famous by Michael Jackson, Prince, Whitney Houston, AC/DC and others.
• Aug. 15:

Re-live the Medieval life at the Ren Faire At the Midsummer Renaissance Faire, there is a range of activities and entertainment each day. As you walk through the fairground, you may encounter magicians, knights, or townsfolk, and watch puppet shows, improv, or plays. By the time you leave, you may find yourself talking in the accent of the locals or wearing the latest in fashion. This Renaissance Faire is set in the village of Merriwick in the 1500s. Knights are vying for the favor of the court, and there are daily tournaments featuring jousting, fencing, and other related sports. One weekend you may run into a fairy, and the next you may fear for your life as pirates lurk. Faire-goers are encouraged to dress up accordingly (kids, dig out your fairy wings and swords!) and participate in all the activities. The Faire, facilitated by the Washington Renaissance Arts & Education Society, will be located at the Kelley Farm in Bonney Lake. It will run for three weekends in August, the 4-5, 11-12, and 18-19 from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. and is catered to all ages. Tickets can be purchased in advance on the website, washingtonfaire.com, or at the gate, and range in price depending upon age and length of admission. Day passes, weekend passes, and all-faire passes are available. Adult tickets start at $19.00 and child passes start at $13.00. Family passes are an option as well. Free parking is provided on-site. Families can also opt to camp at the faire grounds, and campsites can be payed for online (fees vary). The camping area covers a field, and does not include RV plug-ins. Labor Days come last, but certainly aren’t least The Black Diamond Labor Days festival marks the last large summer event on the Plateau. This year, the three-day event will kick off Saturday, Sept. 1, in the afternoon, and festivities will end on Monday, Sept. 3. Event details are still coming together, but past activities include a community talent show and karaoke, pie baking contests, an outdoor movie screening, live sketch performances, sidewalk art competitions, and games and activities for kids and adults of all ages.
