SERVING WHIDBEY ISLAND’S VETERANS, RETIRED MILITARY PERSONNEL AND FAMILIES
Marriage and military unite couple By PATRICIA GUTHRIE
pguthrie@whidbeynewsgroup.com
Every day, Felton Hutcherson drives the 20 minutes from his home in Oak Harbor to Coupeville to visit his wife, Louise. For almost two years, she’s been a resident of Careage of Whidbey, receiving care and rehabilitation at the facility. Twenty years ago, Louise was diagnosed with peripheral artery disease, which reduces blood flow to the limbs. Its severity led to major surgery in 2001, and then 2003, the amputation of her lower legs. The disease is also robbing her of memories, caused by vascular dementia. Sometimes she’s confused about dates and places and people. Other times the 78-year-old woman is as sharp as when Felton met her in 1960 in San Diego when Louise worked for the Navy and he attended San Diego State University on the G.I. bill. Theirs is not just a story revolving around life and work in the military but also an enduring story of love and commitment.

Felton and Louise Hutcherson when their son and daughter were much younger. They are now grandparents and great-grandparents.
“The years I served on active duty were the best years of my life,” says Felton Hutcherson, who served in the Army for four years. He went on to work as a civilian for 42 years at various bases with the Navy and Marines, retiring from NAS Whidbey Island in 1999. “I’m also very proud of our 56 years of
marriage,” he says. His wife served in the Navy for about three years as a postal clerk, then as an accounting technician at Naval Air Reserve in San Diego and Whidbey. Felton, 79, is a common site in the hallways, activity room and dining room at Careage. He usually arrives around 11 a.m. Should he be a few minutes late, Louise is out in the hallway, rolling her wheelchair around looking for him. They pass time in her room watching television, particularly sports — golf, football, basketball. Louise and Felton like all the same sports although she’s soured lately on women’s basketball, saying the players have become too aggressive and physical on the court. They also take in some favorite old shows. “Look, Louise, ‘Big Valley’ is on,” Felton tells her. Louise is a long-time fan of actress Barbara Stanwyck, who starred in that show. Photo albums put together by Felton sit on the window ledge. Titled “Louise’s Book of Memories,” one is is devoted to the yards and gardens of their Oak Harbor home, which Louise meticulously designed and maintained. “She does it all. She was very active in gardening. “Sometimes I’d leave in the morning

“So good. You can’t get any of that soul food here,” her husband says, laughing. Felton also knows his way around the kitchen. He attended culinary school in San Diego. “I cooked at home. He cooked at work,” says Louise. A married couple who both serve in the military is not that common. According to a military report, there are currently about 84,000 militarymarried-to-military couples in the United States Armed Forces. These days, more and more couples are joining the military together after getting married shortly after basic and advanced training.
“I always worked Thanksgiving, Mothers Day, Fathers Day,” he said. He recalled one Thanksgiving when he just wanted to stay home. “Louise asked, ‘What’s wrong? You’re usually the first one there.’” When he answered he just wanted a holiday off, she gave him something to think about. “She said: ‘Well, the house is on fire and I’m going to call the fire department. Our son broke his leg and I’m taking him to the hospital. “‘Just because it’s a holiday the world isn’t going to stop revolving. You should count your blessings you have a job.’ “So off I went to work my 12-hour shift.” While going to college after receiving two scholarships to study management, Felton worked part-time at the Officer’s Club at Naval Air Station San Diego.
“Well, I told him it’s just like any job. You are going to be told what time to come to work, what time to leave. In the military or civilian life,
Hired full time as a manager, assignments were big and small — intimate affairs for retiring officers and big spreads in big spaces.

Living apart the past two years has been a testament to their mutual devotion. “I do have hopes of bringing her home next year in the spring,” Felton says. “She’s responded quite well to medication. She’s getting stronger; she can use her walker.”
“The planes would be in the corner and they’d hang parachutes,” he remembers. “It felt like walking into an enchanted forest sometimes. It was beautiful.”
People occasionally remark to Felton about his doting and daily trips to see his wife as if it’s an extraordinary gesture.
The Hutchersons have two children, five grandchildren and recently became greatgrandparents. In their early years of retirement, they traveled the country in a “classy motor home” often visiting San Diego, where their son lives. Felton says his wife has always been a shy person and doesn’t like the limelight. He’s more outgoing, more talkative and not afraid to express his opinion. Felton calls Louise a fighter and a determined person. “She went through hell before that first leg was removed. She was in a lot of

He remembers one conversation with a young man who told him he wasn’t interested because he didn’t want to be ordered around.
He took a liking to cooking, the kitchen and all the challenges involved in directing the catering of dinners for hundreds of people during military balls and other celebrations.
He fondly recalls banquets staged in base hangars where tables and chairs flowed around planes and parachutes.

Over the years, Felton has spoken to young people about joining the armed forces. He particularly wants AfricanAmericans to see him as a role model, telling them the military offers not just career opportunities but also lessons in life.
For people considering a culinary career, catering or restaurant work, he reminds them they’ll be working holidays, serving those who have the day off.
“One time she says to me, ‘Well, I still have my arms and my eyes and there are people worse off than I am.’”

Born and raised in New Orleans, Louise likes simple but tasty “food from the heart.

Old Crows award two Whidbey units, sailor By STEVE BRISTOW
“Congratulations to Electronic Attack Squadron 135 and Commander, Navy Information Operations Command Whidbey Island for its selection as the 2017 Assocation of Old Crows outstanding Navy unit award winners. Their contributions to the information operations and electronic warfare community are significant.” Succinct and momentous, this was the message from the
Chief of Naval Operations to all Navy commands, announcing two units from Naval Air Station Whidbey Island as the Navy’s Sea and Shore national “Military Service, Outstanding Unit Award” winners for Electronic Warfare. Additionally, the Association of Old Crows awarded CTR1 Phillip Bush, also of NIOC Whidbey Island (NIOC WI), the “Military Service Award Navy,” for individual Electronic Warfare contributions and
achievement. The honors make for a literal, three-achievement “hattrick” for Whidbey Island’s Electronic Warfare community. They were presented at the annual Association of Old Crows International Symposium and Convention in Washington, D.C., during November and at local NAS Whidbey ceremonies. NAS Whibdey is considered the center of excellence for Navy Electronic Warfare.
