Aberdeen hopes to find a way to carry over some late-season momentum from 2016. Returning to the ultra-competitive Evergreen 2A Conference for the first time since 2011 (they spent two seasons in the Greater St. Helens League and two more in a combined 2A/1A circuit), the Bobcats absorbed their share of lumps from league powers early. But they closed with impressive league wins over Rochester and Centralia in completing a 4-5 season. Even if some of the key operatives have graduated, AHS coach Kevin Ridout believes that the confidence from the late-season run will remain.
“I think success breeds success,” Ridout said. “How long have kids (in Aberdeen) been told they can’t compete at that level? We believe we can compete and we expect to be in the playoff hunt (this season).” The Bobcats will again count heavily on senior running back Kylan Touch, their leading rusher and an all-league selection last year. Touch
has bulked up a bit to 190 pounds without sacrificing speed. Also among Aberdeen’s seven returning starters are junior quarterback Ben Dublanko, entering his third season as a starter, and allleague lineman Skyler Murray. Other returning regulars include senior linemen Alex Reyes and Sage Bridges, junior lineman Dan Hunt and receiver Joey Shumate. Ridout believes his team can physically match up with most foes, giving his team a B plus grade in strength. “We’re a lot physically stronger than we have been,” he said. The Aberdeen coach, however, said overall team speed ranks as only a C plus — not necessarily the best sign for a team that has been prone to giving up big plays. Ridout hopes to expand the list of playmakers this season, noting that Touch and the since-graduated receiver Braden Castleberry-Taylor were Aberdeen’s only offensive weapons at times last year. “I think we’ve got to be more diversified,” he observed. “We have to have more people touching the ball.” Senior Zeiah Embry, junior Dylan Landenglos and sophomores Patrick Hunt and Aiden Neely will compete for other backfield berths. Bailey Delahanty, Cameron Hockstetler and Bodie Wharton will join Shumate at the receiver slots, with Ryan Curry and Enrique Ontiveros teaming with Murray, Bridges, Reyes and Hunt in the line. Senior Zach Carpenter is another lineman who will see action on both sides of the ball. All-league nose guard Murray leads a defense that will also feature Reyes and Carpenter up front and Touch and Delahanty in the secondary. Ridout rates perennial powers Tumwater and Chehalis as the Evergreen 2A Conference favorites. The Bobcat coaching staff includes Casey Doyle, Cory Martinsen, Jack Traxtle, Bob Greene, Joe Fagerstedt, Shon Schreiber, Jared Berken, Josh Mayr and Kent Gravley.

2017 FOOTBALL PREVIEW
Week-to-week look at 2017 schedule on the Twin Harbors BY ROB BURNS GH Newspaper Group There are plenty of high school football enthusiasts who have already settled in to determine what games to go to each week, whether to take in every team at least once this season or to see the most intriguing matchup week to week. It is always a bit of a guessing game to map out the games in early August — 2 1/2 weeks before the first official high school practice kicks off — but it is a good way to map out a game plan for the season. It’s more of a guessing game than usual in that three teams — Wishkah, Lake Quinault and Taholah — have either already decided to cancel the season because of a lack of players, or they’re still deciding at press time. With that in mind, here is a week-toweek look at the 2017 season, with an eye on seeing each Twin Harbor football team at least once: SEPTEMBER 1 The opening weekend of football is a
packed two-day swing that will get you in the right mood for football. To start, two Grays Harbor rivals will face each other at Stewart Field — Montesano at Aberdeen. The Bulldogs are coming off an Evergreen 1A League title season and a state 1A quarterfinals appearance. The Bobcats returned to the Evergreen 2A Conference and held their own. Other key games: Hoquiam at Chehalis; Napavine at Raymond; Adna at Pe Ell-Willapa Valley (Saturday, 1 p.m.). SEPTEMBER 8 Olympic Stadium will be the host for the 112th meeting of the Myrtle Street rivalry: Aberdeen at Hoquiam at 7 p.m. This will be the 46th meeting between the two rivals at Olympic Stadium, with Aberdeen leading 30-15. Seven past meetings were shifted from Aberdeen’s Stewart Field to Olympic Stadium for various reasons. Hoquiam won last year’s meeting, 35-7, at Stewart Field and has won the last three meetings. The last Aberdeen win came in 2013, a 36-2 win at Olympic Stadium.
SEPTEMBER 15 We’re going to move into the Class 2B ranks for this Friday night matchup — Winlock at Ocosta. The Wildcats have a new coach, longtime semi-pro football player and Grays Harbor Bearcats founder Chris Raffelson, and will be looking for that rare event, a win on the gridiron. Last year, Ocosta got the second of its two 2016 wins with a dramatic 32-28 win over Winlock. Hayden Hoff’s 2-yard touchdown run with 6.7 seconds left gave the Wildcats the win. A blocked punt by Kalvyn Scott late in the game set up the game-winning drive. SEPTEMBER 22 There’s only one game on the Twin Harbors on this Friday night and you’ll find it in East County — Seton Catholic at Elma. The Eagles are rebuilding after graduation and transfer losses makes life tough for this season. (Of course, they can have everyone back, because we’re writing this so far ahead of the season.) Seton Catholic didn’t field a team last
year, having shifted over to King’s Way Christian last season. SEPTEMBER 29 This is the first of two weeks that will determine the Coastal 1B League champion and it’ll be Taholah at Naselle. The winner of this matchup will have the inside track to the league title and an automatic berth into the state playoffs. This eight-man football clash will be key, but if you need to stay on the Harbor, the only Harbor home game will be Raymond at North Beach. Both teams are reshuffling and rebuilding after successful 2016 season. OCTOBER 6 The second half of this Coastal 1B League title battle will be at Ben Charley Field in Taholah when the Chitwhins hosts Wishkah at 6 p.m. This is the first time Wishkah has fielded a Logger football team since 2013, an 8-3 team that SEE WEEK-TO-WEEK | PAGE 7

Week-to-week went to the state eight-man playoffs and lost to Lummi, 57-22. Wishkah beat Taholah, 70-30, at home that season in a district playoff game. Depending upon how each of these teams do against Naselle, the league title will be clinched on this day. OCTOBER 13 The bulk of the Evergreen 1A schedule is packed into the final weeks of the season. Hoquiam will be on the second half of its East County swing on this night when it visits Rottle Field for a yearly battle for the league title. Montesano has been adept at reloading its roster year after year. Hoquiam will be rebuilding and will know where it stands well before this matchup. Traditionally, this is a must-see game between two Grays Harbor powerhouse programs. Also: South Bend at North Beach: The Indians are slowly rebuilding and making life competitive for their opponents. A matchup with the Hyaks at Lt. Davis Field in Oyehut will be a key game with postseason crossover implications.
OCTOBER 20 Aberdeen has a lot of confidence coming into this season, even with the loss of a few key players. By the time the Bobcats host their final home game of the season, a burgeoning rivalry game with Rochester, they’ll know just how well they’ve done. This Bobcat-Warrior matchup will be a good battle between former District IV 2A independents, if you want to think back fondly to those halcyon two years of 2A/1A games. OCTOBER 27 The final week of the regular season will bring two longtime rivalry games to the spotlight — Montesano at Elma (the East County Civil War) and Pe Ell-Willapa Valley at Raymond. The EC Civil War has been a one-sided affair in favor of Montesano in recent years, but it is still one of the best events on the schedule. PWV at Raymond will most likely decide the Southwest Washington 2B Coastal Division title and will bring out the best in two historic Pacific County rivals. After that, November will be a cornucopia of district crossover games and state postseason games throughout the state of Washington. It will be glorious. Enjoy the season.

Coach's Take Coach Ron Clark BY TRAVIS RAINS GH Newspaper Group Elma last year started as many as five sophomores throughout the season and Coach Ron Clark says that while the Eagles will again this year be fielding a young team he is confident in their ability to perform at the varsity level. “It’s a young group of kids,” Clark said. “They’ve got great leadership, they’re trying really hard and we’ll see how things work out.” That leadership and work ethic has led to improvements on both sides of the ball.
Clark believes Elma’s defense has vastly improved from last year, particularly on the defensive line. “I think it’s an attitude thing,” he said. “They’re holding each other to a higher standard and are playing with a lot more intensity.” Clark was quick to credit the defensive improvements to the players themselves, but also noted the contributions of second year defensive coordinator Larry Raynes. On the other side of the ball, Clark said the Eagles have made progress on the line and through the air. “We probably threw the ball better than I thought we could,” Clark said of the team’s performance at camp. “I was pleased with that progress. Pass protection was better but that’s always tested on a Friday night when you have to face multiple fronts and blitzes.” Among the returning players who made significant contributions on both side of the ball last year are RB/LB Taitum Brumfield, TE/LB Niall Baxter and OL/DL Brandon Tyler. Offense and defense don’t make up the entirety of a football team. Special teams play a vital role, and Clark said that is another aspect of Elma’s game that is seeing improvement this year. Alejandro Hernandez started kicking for Elma as a sophomore last season. “Our kicking game is coming around, too,” he said. “He (Hernandez) kicked as a sophomore last year and he has vastly improved.”

2017 FOOTBALL PREVIEW
2016 YEAR IN REVIEW
Lots of playoff qualifiers in 2016, not many playoff wins BY RICK ANDERSON GH Newspaper Group For the most part, Twin Harbors football success in 2016 was confined to the regular season. Six of the 10 area teams earned some type of postseason berth, with several exceeding preseason expectations in the process. But the state playoffs proved to be something of a disaster for Twin Harbors clubs. Only Pe Ell-Willapa Valley survived the opening round of state and the Titans ended their season with a 41-7 quarterfinal loss to eventual state 2B champion Napavine. The decisiveness of that contest typified what could be described as the Year of the Blowout. Even with the 40-point runningclock mercy rule in effect, the average victory margin in regular-season games involving Twin Harbor teams was 29 points. There were, however, a good number of highlights in regular-season play. Considered something of an unknown
quantity due to significant graduation losses, Montesano responded by going unbeaten in its first 10 games, winning its first league championship since 2011 and earning its 11th consecutive state Class 1A berth. Highlighting Monte’s season was a dramatic 20-14 conquest of Hoquiam in an Evergreen 1A League showdown staged in a torrential downpour at Olympic Stadium. Trevor Ridgway’s 28-yard touchdown pass to Nick Chapman with 12 seconds remaining decided the contest. The state draw, however, did the Bulldogs no favors. Despite their lofty regular-season accomplishments, they were forced to travel to Connell for their state opener and fell to the eventual state runner-up Eagles, 48-28. Explosive Hoquiam scored at least 35 points in seven games — 42 in the second half alone in a come-from-behind 48-40 non-league win over Hockinson. Review state with a 62-29 district thumping of King’s Way Christian, but fell to Mount Baker, 39-14, in the opening round of state. Returning to the Evergreen 2A Conference after spending two years in a combined Evergreen 2A/1A league, Aberdeen absorbed some early lumps but finished the season strongly with league wins over Rochester and Centralia. Elma stayed in the 1A playoff race until dropping a triple-overtime decision to Forks on the penultimate week of the regular season. Pe Ell-Willapa Valley had the rare distinction of nabbing consecutive championships in two different leagues. The Central League champions in 2015, the Titans dominated league foes in their first year as a combine in the Southwest Washington 2B Coastal Division (formerly the Pacific League) Powered by senior running back Kaelin Jurek, PWV easily handled Wahkiakum and Mabton in Class 2B playoff tests before the quarterfinal loss to Napavine. Coastal Division runner-up Raymond authored the season’s most dramatic victory by any Twin Harbors team. Jack Jordan hauled in a tipped pass from Kason Koski for a 66-yard gain in the final minute, setting up Koski’s 22yard field goal that produced a wild 16-14 upset of Adna in a district 2B game. That earned the Seagulls a state berth, but they lost to La Conner, 33-10, the following week. Hit hard by graduation after a pair of Pacific League titles, North Beach nevertheless made it as far as the district 2B playoffs before being eliminated by Napavine. Taholah rebounded from a slow start to win its last five regular-season games, including a showdown win over Naselle that decided the Coastal 1B title. The Chitwhins, however, were another team that encountered a tough postseason draw and were eliminated by reigning state champion Neah Bay in the quaddistrict playoffs. After abandoning the short-lived Twin Valley combine, neither Lake Quinault nor Wishkah were able to field a team last year. Wishkah had intended to return to the gridiron this season, but those plans were jettisoned by a shortage of players. There were no conventional all-state teams selected in 2016. But Hoquiam senior running back and outside linebacker Artimus Johnson finished third in balloting for the the state Class 1A Player of the Year award.

A league champion in 2015 and a state qualifier last year, Hoquiam will be flying a bit under the radar this season. The Grizzlies graduated most of their starters at the so-called skill positions. But with a solid line, good athletes in the backfield and a strong off-season in the weight room, first-year head coach Jeremy McMillan believes his club will exceed preseason expectations. “I am really optimistic,” said McMillan, Hoquiam’s offensive coordinator for the past several years. “(Defending Evergreen 1A League champion) Montesano, with their returners, will be the guys to beat. But I think we’ll be tough, too, because our kids play with a lot of heart. We’re young, we’re going to make mistakes, but I think we’ll learn from them.” In contrast to last season, Hoquiam’s chief asset may be its talent up front. Senior linemen Garrett Bradley and Chewy Muro were all-league performers last season. Matt Brown, a 260-pound sopho-
more with decent quickness, is coming off an exceptionally impressive freshman year. Hoquiam’s backfield outlook is a bit more unsettled. The Grizzlies will continue to operate primarily from a spread formation, but may run slightly more than in the past. Senior Sean McAllister, who backed up the since-graduated Artimus Johnson (last year’s league Offensive Player of the Year) at running back in 2016, will likely get the majority of carries. There are three candidates to succeed fouryear starter Gregory Dick at quarterback. They include his sophomore brother Garrett, Asai Villarreal, a senior transfer from Othello, and converted receiver Payton Quintanilla, recovering from reconstructive knee surgery. While declining to name a frontrunner early in preseason workouts, McMillan likes Quintanilla’s speed in running from the spread. “He has that dynamic we haven’t had at quarterback for a long time,” said the HHS coach. “He can swing it, too. He’ll make some defensive coordinators stay awake nights.” Villarreal may wind up at tailback if he doesn’t get the quarterback job. Junior Jackson Folkers, who understudied Gregory Dick last season, is shifting to wide receiver. He’ll join Francis Sweeney, Jonah Doll, Marques Rivera, Levi Sudderth and placekicker Naz Mazariegos at that position. Senior Victor James, a first-year football player for Hoquiam, will operate at tight end. Defensively, the Grizzlies should be strongest at linebacker. Muro and Quintanilla were all-leaguers there last season, while McAllister and junior Brady Cummings are also well-regarded. Villarreal was an all-league defensive back at Othello. McMillan also likes the progress of Zack Underwood in the defensive line and Sweeney and Folkers in the secondary. McMillan, who considers former Grizzly head coach Rick Moore a mentor, will be assisted this season by Ed Dawson, Tracy Pelan, Cameron Parker, Eric Dixon, Zach Fogo and conditioning-strength coaches Dana LeDuc and Larry Benner.

2017 FOOTBALL PREVIEW
PLAY OF THE YEAR - 2016
Just the way they drew it up in the dirt BY BRENDAN CARL GH Newspaper Group The most memorable play during the 2016 Twin Harbors prep football season didn’t come from hours of study of offensive schemes or as a basic part of a system. The play many Raymond football players will be talking about for decades to come was the product of the idea of couple coaches and a little bit of luck. It is almost always true that luck is present in the most memorable plays. However, the Seagulls used up enough luck for a whole season in the final two minutes of their district crossover game against Adna last season. With 1:44 left
in the contest and Raymond trailing 1413, the Gulls had turned the ball back over to the Pirates on downs. Three plays later, the Gulls recovered a fumble and suddenly Raymond head coach Luke Abbott and offensive coordinator Mike Tully were trying to come up with ways to get their offense at least into field goal range. “We are backed up in our own territory. We didn’t have a trick play in mind that we thought was going to work against their defense so it was ‘Well, let’s try to see what we can do against a single high safety. Let’s put our athletes on the same side of the field, we’ll look left and SEE PLAY | PAGE 15

Raymond's Jack Jordan pulls in a tipped pass and runs towards end zone late in the fourth quarter with of a District IV crossover game on Saturday night last year in Centralia. Jordan was tackled at the two yard line and the Seagulls would later kick a field goal to win the game, 16-14.

Play make that safety bite and then throw it back to the backside post,” Raymond coach Luke Abbott said. “If he catches the ball, we are at around the 40-yard line and then maybe spike the ball and have another play to try and kick a 40 plus yard field goal. We agreed, let’s try to put the ball in the hands of one of our athletes.” The Gulls hadn’t run a play for more than eight yards during the entire second half and now they were 68 yards from the goal line with less than 90 seconds left in the game. The coaches devised a plan to stack post routes on the right side and let their athletes try to make a play. Quarterback Kason Koski dropped back, looked left and then rolled out to his right. Koski heaved a pass toward Jack Jordan. As the pass sailed over Jordan’s head, a Pirate defender was able to tip the ball just enough to redirect it into the sophomore receiver’s hands. “I’m saying ‘Oh my God, how did he
catch it, how is he still running?’ I didn’t know what to think,” Koski said. “We had a jet on the left side and two posts on the right side. He was on the outside. The safety tipped it, it went right into Jack’s hands and he took off.” Jordan caught the ball in stride and kept running all the way down to the Adna 2-yard line. Koski ran a quarterback sneak on the next play and picked a nice spot for his next feat — a 22-yard field goal. Who else would hold the ball for the kick other than Jordan as Koski sneaked the ball inside the right goal post. Koski’s hands went up as tears came down his face. Raymond’s playoff run would end the next weekend, but the 16-14 victory had a few moments no one in attendance will soon forget. “It couldn’t have worked any better in our favor, but I wouldn’t say that it was the most well executed play,” Abbott said. “That is a game I will never forget and it is the type of game that will probably never happen again in my coaching career. It is even tough to explain it because it isn’t something that happens every day.”

Coach's Take Coach Terry Jensen BY TRAVIS RAINS GH Newspaper Group The Montesano Bulldogs may not have a wealth of experienced players returning this season, but head coach Terry Jensen said there is no shortage of talent or competition for positions. “The main thing you think about when talking about us is a hard working group,” Jensen said. “Football is important to them and a priority in the lives of our players.” Jensen said Bulldog fans are likely to see some new faces on the field this year. “Some of our sophomores this year are going to have to step up and either be starters or key contributors to varsity,” he said. Montesano won’t be starting from scratch, though. Senior Jared Wallace is returning as an offensive lineman and linebacker. Trevor Ridgway is back as
the starting quarterback and cornerback. Last year’s standout receiver Dakoyta Reninger will be on the field again this year as will last year’s offensive MVP Carson Klinger. Aside from those returning starters Jensen said competition for positions is fierce on both sides of the ball. Senior Gage Iverson is competing against senior Kooper Karaffa and senior Kobe Gallinger for playing time at the tight end and split end positions. Senior Jared Wallace is firmly positioned at guard, but Jenson said many of the other offensive line positions are still up for grabs. Senior Seth Dierkop is competing with junior Ben Sowers, junior Kai Olson and senior Jordan Ruggles for a tackle position. Defensively, sophomore Sam Winter and senior Kobe Gallinger are battling for the free safety position and senior Kooper Karaffa is pushing for playing time at the linebacker position against seniors Carson Klinger and Dakoyta Reninger. “There are a lot of guys in the mix,” Jensen said. “There’s just a lot of competition right now. Right now, ability wise, some guys are real close to each other and we need to get that figured out.” In the past the Bulldogs have placed an emphasis on defense, and Jensen said this year will be no different. “We’re a defensive team first before we’re an offensive team,” he said. “I guess I’d rather win a game 2-0 than 38-36. We take a lot of pride in our defense here. The veterans on the Bulldogs have been doing their part to help the younger players during practice and off the field, Jensen said. After only one week of practice, the head coach likes what he sees. “Overall, considering it has only been one week of practice, we’re happy with where we’re at right now, but have a lot more work to do,” he said.

2017 FOOTBALL PREVIEW
New era of Tumwater football begins LAUREN SMITH The Olympian Editor's Note: The Aberdeen Bobcats will face Tumwater in Week 7. Coach Beattie's first head-coaching job was at Elma, from 1988-94. TUMWATER — Bill Beattie felt a nervous excitement for his first day of football practice at Tumwater High School. He watched the T-Birds play when he was younger, and he and his friends were ready to make their own mark on the program. He’d heard the T-Birds had a new coach — he just wasn’t sure who it was. That was 1974. Beattie was an incoming freshman at Tumwater, and Sid Otton — now the all-time winningest high school football coach in state history — had just arrived at the program. Back then, Beattie walked to practice with his teammates, across the dirt and wheat fields. The old wooden stadium was still standing, and the football tradition that Otton would eventually build
was just beginning. “To have a chance to come back and hopefully continue, and make better, the tradition of things that he’s done for 43 years is just an awesome opportunity for me,” Beattie said. “That’s probably the No. 1 reason why I’m back here. I feel like I want to try to repay this program for what they’ve done for me.” On Wednesday, Beattie wasn’t nervous for his first day as coach. But he was certainly excited. After coaching the past 22 years at Olympia, Beattie was hired to take over at his former high school earlier this year, following Otton’s retirement. Beattie frequently credits his own coaching success to Otton, and said it was important to him that Otton’s legacy was carried on. “To me, it was very important,” Beattie said. “I say it all the time, I wouldn’t be doing what I was doing if it wasn’t for Coach Otton and Tumwater football.” “It means a lot to this football program that he’s the head coach,” Otton said.
“Tumwater football is in good hands,” said senior Cy Hicks, who was an Olympian All-Area selection last season. Beattie’s commitment to keeping with Tumwater’s longstanding traditions appears to have made the transition as seamless as expected. “The transition has been easy,” Tumwater senior Jakob Holbrook said. “Coach Beattie made it easy for us. He wanted to make sure everyone knew he was going to keep everything the same. Don’t reinvent the wheel — that’s what he preaches.” “I think it’s going to be key this year, for further down the road, when we go to the postseason,” Hicks said. “He knows the Tumwater tradition.” Practice, as it always seems to in the well-established program, was running like clockwork with Beattie often watching different stations from the center of the field. “Getting out here and starting this just brings out the same memories,” Beattie said. “It’s football, and we’re out here having a lot of fun.”
Beattie said he recently spoke with Tumwater Rotary about how much of the game has changed, but how much of it has stayed the same. The equipment, the styles of play, the conditioning are different. But the values Beattie first witnessed in 1974 remain, and Otton remembers Beattie’s class as the first to believe in what the program — which won five state titles with Otton — could be. “I remember we had a really good freshman group,” Otton said. “I knew Bill was a part of it, because I already knew him. What I witnessed was they believed in what we were talking about in changing the culture.” While Tumwater’s culture isn’t expected to change with Beattie, players and coaches are excited to begin the program’s next chapter. “We get to kind of bring on a new legacy,” Holbrook said. “We’re excited to be the first team that does that, and make a mark in Tumwater history. That’s definitely something we look forward to.”

2017 FOOTBALL PREVIEW
EVERGREEN 1A LEAGUE
Tenino excited to test out new black turf MATT BAIDE The Chronicle Most football fields are green grass with white lines. There are some exceptions: Eastern Washington University has a red field; Boise State has a blue field. You can now add Tenino High School’s Beaver Stadium to that unique list. Tenino’s black turf football field is almost complete, with the Beavers now practicing on the field. Tenino plays in the same league as Harbor squads Elma, Montesano and Hoquiam, but only the Grizzlies will get to play on the balck turf this year, when they travel to Tenino for a game on Sept. 29. Hellas Construction has been installing the new field after putting in new turf at the Kibbie Dome at the Uni-
versity of Idaho. The project came in part through a grant from Hellas, and the summer project also includes upgrades to the grandstands and lighting. It goes without saying that the Beavers are looking forward to hitting the turf in full uniform for the first time next Friday, when they host rival Rochester in both teams’ season opener. “I’m way more excited,” senior Guy Murillo said. “We don’t have to run through like a foot of mud anymore. It’s going to be nice slick turf.” When asked about his preference, Murillo said he still prefers grass fields. “I think the turf looks better, but I like grass,” Murillo said. “It’s more old-school football. I like it more. It just feels better, but I like the look of that turf.” Senior quarterback Miles Cannon is

also pumped to play on the new field, and is happy about not having to worry about the weather affecting the surface. “It looks pretty cool. I want it to be done already. It’s taking forever. It’s exciting,” Cannon said. “People say it’s going to melt our cleats, but I don’t think so. We play late at night in October and September and it’s 7 o’clock at night when we play so I don’t think it will be a problem.” First-year Tenino coach Cary Nagel sees the excitement about the new field from not only the players, but the whole town. “With the turf being brand new, it’s definitely brought a lot of excitement to the kids, and the town has brought a lot of excitement and the kids are excited to play on it,” Nagel said. “Hopefully it just keeps bringing people out.
It’s definitely an exciting time here.” Nagel thinks it will take opponents a little time to adjust to the field, especially if the Beavers wear black jerseys on the black turf. “I think it can throw a curveball at some people. I think once teams have played on it once, they’re going to have their ways to go about preparing their team to play on the black turf,” Nagel said. “I think initially, it might be a little bit of a shock for teams, but it’s still football. It’s played on a 100-yard field, no matter if it’s blue, red, black, it doesn’t matter.” The field will be broken in with practices once the turf installation is completed this week, and the field will see its first game action on Sept. 1. “I’m very excited to play on that football field,” Cannon said. “Rochester better be ready.”

Rookie head coach Travis Cluckey is excited about, well, just about everything! The Phoenix, Ariz., native has a new home in Ocean City, a couple of new jobs as a science teacher at North Beach Jr./Sr. High and coach of the Hyaks, and a brand new baby boy. And he’s excited about his Hyaks’ chances to improve on last year’s 4-6 season that followed back-
to-back Pacific 2B titles the two previous campaigns. Cluckey said his offense will use multiple variations based on the Wing-T, which North Beach has already been running. He said the players have quickly picked up on his own versions of the Wing-T, and he expects they will “actually have a good time playing the game.” Look for misdirection and an occasional shift to an I or Wishbone formation as well. The team returns five seniors from last year’s squad. Although he declined to single out any specific players, “without linemen, you don’t have a Wing-T,” Cluckey said, adding, “I’m honestly excited for each and every one of the players … they’ve all worked really hard this summer, especially the seniors this year.” Fans will be watching for senior co-captains Ben Poplin at tight end and quarterback/running back Brenden Chaney to help make things happen. On the defensive side, he expects to emphasize teamwork and speed in 4-3 and 5-2 configurations. Looking at his first season as a head coach, Cluckey is “just really excited!” He noted that there were 18 on the team last year, and the Hyaks had 30 when practice started this time around. “We’ve got a bunch of good athletes, and we’re working together, coming together as a team.”

Coach's Take Coach Josh Fluke BY RICK ANDERSON GH Newspaper Group Pe Ell-Willapa Valley may be spreading the wealth more in its bid for a league three-peat. Central League champions in 2015, the Titans also captured league honors in their first season in the Southwest Washington 2B Coastal Division last year. Although several starters from the latter team will return, they graduated workhorse running back Kaelin Jurek, the division’s Offensive Player of the Year in 2016. In addition, Ever Gutierrez — a second-team allleague running back last season — has transferred back to his previous home in Utah. With a large team roster (36 players) and plenty of young talent, PWV is still consid-
ered among the Coastal Division favorites. Josh Fluke, in his third season as the head coach of the Pacific-Lewis County combine, likes his depth at running back. “This year, we have no superstars,” Fluke conceded. “But we have three to five talented backs who we can put in at any time and get the job done. Those include senior Tyson Nissell, regarded by Fluke as a team leader, and a pair of quick sophomores in Max Smith and Peter Hamilton. The Titans also return Matt Pearson, who started last season at quarterback as a sophomore. “He has the potential to be a dandy,” Fluke observed. Senior Ryan Shepherd, an all-league receiver, figures to be Pearson’s primary target when the Titans put the ball in the air. Coach Fluke, however, said his club doesn’t plan to deviate greatly from its run-first pedigree. With the exception of all-league lineman Brad Prestegord, a 295-pound senior, PWV will be young up front. That bolsters Fluke’s contention that his team may take a few games to find its form. “It might take a couple of games into the season to get going, but we’ll get there,” the PWV coach asserted. All-leaguers Prestegord (in the defensive line), Nissell at linebacker and Shepherd and senior Cub Bair in the secondary lead what figures to be a solid Titan defense. Although reluctant to project a division favorite, Fluke indicated Ilwaco might be the team to beat. Greg Wonhoff, John Peterson, Keith Shepherd and Eric Clements round out PWV’s experienced coaching staff.

The Ocosta High football has been focusing on speed and strength in the offseason, and first year head coach Chris Raffelson said he hopes that work will transfer to the field on Friday nights. Raffelson helped coach the junior high team last year and said this year’s team will be bolstered by a talented incoming freshman class. That class will get more playing time than most incoming freshman can boast, as Ocosta will this year be able to field a junior varsity team. “One of the positives this year is we have a little over 30 (players), so we’re gonna be able to have a JV program this year which is gonna be nice,” Raffelson said. Raffelson credits the increase in players to both coach and player efforts. “Us coaches do a lot of recruiting, but the kids did a lot of recruiting too, along with the coaches,” he said. “The kids got a lot more to come out.” The larger-than-usual Ocosta team has its work cut out for them, as is the case for any team learning a new system under a new head coach.
Ocosta's coaching staff
“A lot of running a new program is getting the kids to buy into it and take ownership of the program and help build the program,” he said. Raffelson said his players are adapting well and learning quickly. When asked about potential star players for the upcoming season, he said the thing to watch for in Ocosta football will not be individual efforts but teamwork. “They all play well as a team,” he said. “I don’t think we have any individuals on the team and that’s one thing that’s really helping us this year. We’re playing well as a team and they understand it takes all 11 of them to be able to run a play.” The plays the offense will be running this year will resemble a west coast style led by offensive coordinator Cameron Ness. Raffelson said one aspect of play the offense and defense has been focused on is speed. “We’re running kind of a west coast style with some read option,” Raffelson said. “We run a pretty simple playbook and the kids are picking it up pretty quick.” He noted that offenses and defenses alike have been getting much faster in the past few years. Ocosta’s defense has been working hard to be able to counter that speed shown by opposing offenses. “The football programs are just getting faster and have been for the past few years,” he said. “On defense we have to be able to match that.” Throughout the offseason Raffelson said the team worked at getting players into the weight room to improve their strength. He said his players are motivated and have even been arriving at practice an hour early to put in extra work. Among the players returnng from last year’s team are linemen Joe Wardlow and Gabe Elder, both of whom earned secondteam all-league honors. Others returning starters include RB/DB Kobe Beck and Hayden Hoff, who plays multiple positions. Hoff and junior Jayden Matthews are listed as quarterbacks on the roster. “We’re trying to be just bigger, faster and stronger and that’s just part of building a program,” he said. “I hope we can be competitive this year.”

Coach's Take Coach Luke Abbott BY RICK ANDERSON GH Newspaper Group Perhaps no Twin Harbors team suffered more heavily from graduation losses than Raymond’s Seagulls. A perennial state qualifier in recent years, the Gulls graduated, among others, all-state lineman Luke Hamilton, versatile quarterback Kason Koski and ace running back Jace Duckworth. They’re left with a small roster (only 20 players at present, although they expect to pick up a few more) populated largely by underclassmen. Raymond coach Luke Abbott isn’t, however, calling this a rebuilding year. “We were fortunate enough to have a decent sophomore class. Our quarterback and entire backfield are juniors and sophomores. Half of our offensive line are juniors,” Abbott said. Compounding the Gulls’ growing pains is that they’ll open the season against reigning state 2B champion Napavine.
“I have high expectations for them to step up and be ready to go,” he continued. “They’re starting to learn the system. Are they going to be 100 percent in Game One? Probably not. But by the time league opens, hopefully they’ll be operating on all cylinders and won’t be taking a step back.” Abbott projects his team for middle-ofthe-pack status in the Southwest Washington 2B Coastal Division and said he “expects a winning season.” Junior running back Patrick Edwards, who rushed for nearly 1,000 yards last season, will likely be the primary weapon in Raymond’s run-oriented offense. He is blessed with good speed — probably the team’s major asset this season. Edwards will probably team with junior Reese Garcia and sophomore McCartney Maden in the backfield. Junior Jack Jordan, a converted tight end, will take over at quarterback. Abbott likes his leadership skills. Marcus Anderson, who backed up Koski last year, is not turning out this season. Other projected offensive starters at present include senior Aidan Worlton at wide receiver, senior Brandt Rockwell at tight end, senior Taevon Hubbard and juniors Cesar Delgado, Christian Anderson, Adan Vasquez and Seth Angelovich up front. Angelovich will not be eligible for the season opener, nor will two other line candidates — seniors Ricky Robinett and John Kronjaeger. Anderson (a second team all-league lineman last season), linebackers Edwards and Hubbard and defensive backs Jordan and Maden are among Raymond’s top defenders. Abbott ranks defending champion Pe Ell-Willapa Valley and Ilwaco as the Coast Division favorites, with South Bend “much improved.” Former Gull standout Darol Ratsavongsy joins veteran assistants Mike Tully, Rod Bannish and Tim Newbill on the coaching staff this season.

South Bend’s Indians are looking to add some muscle to their customary speed this season. Since their dramatic 2010 state 2B championship campaign, South Bend teams have fallen into a familiar pattern. The Indians generally have been quick enough to compete with most opponents, but have lacked the size, strength or depth to contain larger, power-running foes. First-year head coach Shane Byington believes this club is better equipped than most in at least one, if not all, of those areas. “We have a little bit of size and a little bit of speed,” Byington said. “But we’re one of the smallest 2B schools and depth is a concern. The key is if we can stay healthy.” The Tribe graduated versatile standout A.J. Sanchez, who earned all-Coastal Division honors at three positions — running back, defensive back and all-pur-
pose performer. But South Bend still boasts a big-play threat in senior Ben Byington. A sprinter in track, Byington shifts from quarterback to running back — although his father and coach said he’ll still slip behind center from time to time. At least one rival coach believes Byington will be among the league’s top running backs. Junior Drew Rose, a fine all-around athlete who was the Tribe’s ace pitcher in baseball last year, will take over as the primary signal-caller. Preston Lawhead, another junior, will likely operate as the other running back. Other likely offensive starters include senior Raul Mora at split end, sophomore Chase Flynn at tight end, junior Logan Stamos at flanker and seniors Josiah Markwell, Sam Green and Michael Oropeza, junior Hayden Williams and sophomore Uriel (Leon) Zeferino in the line. Markwell, an all-division linebacker last season, leads the Tribe defense. Coach Byington is also counting heavily on Green and Oropeza up front and Mora and senior Jacob Strozyk in the secondary. Mora also gives the Indians a specialteams weapon as a fine placekicker and punter. Although in his first year at the helm, Shane Byington is far from a stranger to the South Bend program. He has been a Tribe assistant for 20 years before succeeding long-time head coach Tom Sanchez. He’ll stick with South Bend’s traditional run-oriented offense. “We’ll have some new wrinkles, but we’re not going to stray too far from the Houston veer,” he said. Byington’s assistants include defensive coordinator Chuck Spoor, plus Kenny Minks and Shawn Rose. The South Bend coach ranks Ilwaco and defending champion Pe Ell-Willapa Valley as the Coastal Division favorites. “We hope to finish in the top half of the league,” Byington said.

Coach's Take Coach Billy James BY SCOTT JOHNSTON GH Newspaper Group After winning the Coastal 1B 8-Man league last year, going 4-0 en route to a 5-3 overall season, the Taholah Chitwins are struggling to field a team as the 2017 campaign approaches. That said, fourth-year coach Billy James agrees with first-year assistant Jordan St. Germaine’s take: St. Germaine said the team graduated a lot of seniors, the Chitwins will be reaching down to freshmen and even some 8thgraders, and some of their young athletes are a little late getting back from summer vacation, but “I know we will have a team.” The Chitwins were an entertaining squad last season, scoring 44 or more points in five different games. They
Assistant Coach Jordan St. Germaine earned a first round playoff bye, then finished their season with a loss to eventual state champion Neah Bay. James said the offense this year will be similar to last year, a “pass heavy, run/ pass option … an 8-man version of the read option. “On offense, there’s a few bright spots with Zach Cain (quarterback) and Jesse Purdy (running back). They’re both pretty standout guys on defense also.” James also said Michael Flores is “a young up and comer; we’re hoping to see what he’s brought to the table” as a running back. “James Bastian (WR/DB) also” is a player to watch. The coach said he is looking forward to “watching everybody perform … I’m excited about just playing and seeing what we can do.”
No football for Wishkah or Lake Quinault this year; Taholah is iffy For the second straight season, neither Wishkah Valley nor Lake Quinault will field a varsity football team. Taholah may not either, but that decision wasn’t to be made until the first week of school, depending on turnout then. Wishkah had begun turnouts for the 2017 campaign, but was forced to jettison
its season due to a lack of players. The same reason had caused Lake Quinault to abandon its 2016 campaign. The Loggers and Elks have not offered high school football since the Twin Valley Class 1B combine was abandoned following the 2015 season.

2017 FOOTBALL PREVIEW
Female quarterback trying to make history at high school BY ANDRE C. FERNANDEZ Miami Herald The quarterback faked a handoff and ran into a crowd of defenders, some a foot taller and twice her weight. After she gained a few yards, a big lineman in the 300-pound range wrapped her up in a bear hug, prompting the end of the play. Holly Neher, standing 5-foot-2 — diminutive compared to her opponent — shrugged off the “tackle” with a smile. But she wanted more. “When I ran the ball there, I was really hoping they’d just hit me,” Neher said. Neher, a junior, is one of three quarterbacks on the Spartans’ roster who is competing to be the team’s starter — a battle still undetermined as the team heads into the final week of preparation to begin their season. Neher is currently the second-string quarterback behind senior Ramon James. Last week’s intra-squad scrimmage at Hollywood Hills High in Florida was the first tackle football game experience for Neher, who has been a quarterback for the girls’ flag football team the past two seasons. She has been working and training with the Spartans throughout their offseason program. The regular season begins next week, and Neher can’t wait for the real thing. “She doesn’t treat this as ‘I’m a girl on a tackle football team,’ ” said first-year Hollywood Hills coach Brandon Graham. “She sees it as ‘I’m a quarterback on the [Hollywood Hills] football team.’ That’s something I really appreciate that about her.” Other girls have played football, such as South Plantation’s Erin DiMeglio, who saw action in 2012 and became the first to play in a game in Florida. Pine Crest’s Sofia Caro played running back and linebacker last season. And others nationwide, such as Samantha “Sami” Grisafe, who was the first to play quarterback in a varsity game in CARL JUSTE/MIAMI HERALD/TNS

Neher California in 2000, have become pioneers for girls dreaming of playing the sport. But should she be named the starter at any point, Neher would become the first high school female to start at quarterback in Dade or Broward (Fla.) County, and it is believed she would be the first in state history. Graham has considered her capable since
she first took the field earlier this summer. “Just that no fear, the grit to be able to drive a team,” Graham said. “She probably came out here in the summer with the best mindset of all the quarterbacks — just being able to handle criticism, handle an offense, and really handle a bad throw and come back and keep going.” Wearing her bright pink cleats and carrying a tiger-print bag containing a custom-version of the team’s playbook she wrote up on the second day of summer workouts, Neher was one of the first players on the field for the Spartans.

All summer at Hollywood Hills, Neher practiced and participated in every activity with the boys. And they have grown to care for her like family. “She’s like my little sister,” wide receiver Alexander Shelton said. “It would put a smile on my face to see her be the starter.” Neher’s mother, Paula, raised Holly and her younger sister, Victoria, as a single mom in Hollywood, Fla. When Neher was 7, her mother was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer. Paula was given a very slim chance of survival and underwent surgery to remove both breasts in September of 2009. The procedure saved her life, something Paula said doctors called “a miracle.” Paula said Holly learned the determination and independence that’s helped her accomplish what she has in school and in athletics by helping her through her road to recovery. “Holly took over taking care of Victoria for me while I was going through [chemotherapy],” said Paula, who has been cancer-free since the operation. “She made sure she was OK. She stood by me, held my hand. She made sure everything was SEE NEHER | PAGE 35

Neher good. She shaved my head when I went through chemo. She helped me every step of the way. She was very strong. “She has always been very independent, just like me and my mother. That’s something she’s had since she was born. She always wants more.” Holly is the goalkeeper on the Hollywood Hills soccer team, a 4.0 GPA stu-
dent and a member of the National Honor Society. Her dream is to become an attorney and practice criminal law, which she hopes to study at Florida State University. Holly and her mother see the risks of playing football as far less dangerous when compared to what they have already overcome so far. “If she does get hit, we’ll go right through it together,” Paula said. “I don’t want her to second-guess anything. I want her to do everything the best she can.” Last week at practice, Graham let Holly run 20 plays, which is about the equiva-

lent of a full quarter. The best of those plays was a screen pass to Shelton that he caught and ran 60 yards for a touchdown. “My coach was like, ‘Yeah, Holly, you did it,’ ” she said. “I was like, ‘Oh my God!’ I started jumping. I was so happy. I’m trying to fight for that starting position.” Neher completed three of seven passes for roughly 65 yards, the touchdown toss and two interceptions in the scrimmage. Graham likely won’t name a starter until later this week, but said Neher didn’t do anything last week to play her way out of
the competition. “I wanted to see her with the starters,” Graham said. “I’m still trying to evaluate her, and she handled herself a bit better than I anticipated.” Neher hugged her mom tight on Thursday after the practice was over. Paula Neher cried tears of joy as her daughter took another step toward living her dream. “I’m so proud and so happy for you,” Paula said. “You are everything I can ever imagine and more. You always surprise me. I’m so proud of you, my love.”
