A message from the Chair of the Board
W
elcome to the 2017 Covington Chamber Business Directory & Community Guide. We hope this guide serves as a resource for helpful things to know about the Covington area and our membership.
To accomplish this, the Covington Chamber of Commerce strives to provide a forum for group advocacy, collaboration and shared learning to help our area businesses prosper. Our mission is to focus on advancing our economic success and support the development of the community.
Covington is one of the fastest growing communities in Washington and is an ideal place to grow a business. With a wealth of amenities, including recreational facilities, numerous parks and trails, a highly rated educational system, a responsive local government, and an overall excellent quality of life. There are many new projects and developments planned for the city that will expand our presence in the region and bring new opportunities as well as challenges. In order to thrive in this changing landscape, it’s more important than ever to be part of the conversation, and the Chamber helps our members’ voices be heard.
The Chamber has a strong record of serving the local business community and will continue doing so in the future. We remain committed to providing our members a supportive system with opportunities for growth, education and sustainability for their businesses, especially in times of change. We achieve this through year-long events and activities such as our monthly luncheons, business after-hours and education seminars. Not to mention fostering personal relationships that stand the test of time. With a bright future in front of us, it’s important to continue our momentum of growth by having an active membership that’s involved in the community and engaged with the public. I strongly encourage everyone to shop locally, volunteer with a local club, and give neighborhood businesses a chance to earn your trust. Together we can all do more. COVINGTON… Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow Although Covington has only been an incorporated city for two decades, its history extends back well over 100 years as it was then known as Jenkins Prairie. In the late 1800s, the Northern Pacific Railroad constructed a rail line that passed through what is now known as Covington, which was the stop they named after one of their surveyors. Although known as a railroad stop, Covington’s first notable industry was lumber. Several lumber mills popped up in the area including the Covington Lumber Company and the Covington Creek Mill. As the area grew, services like schools, a post office, fire station and general store developed in the early 1900s. After logging in the Covington area was no longer feasible, land use shifted to farming, including dairy and berry farms. Over the years, the entire area around Covington continued to grow. In the 1990s, residents began a campaign to incorporate

Covington as a city.That became a reality when residents voted 73 percent in favor of incorporating, which became official on August 31, 1997.This year marks the City of Covington’s 20th anniversary as a city. Today, Covington is a city that successfully balances retail business, a family-friendly environment, easy access to healthcare, and open communication with city leaders. While the population of Covington is only about 18,500, the retail trade area serves a population of nearly 100,000. Visitors from more than four ZIP codes come to Covington’s downtown retail core to shop at some of the area’s most popular retail outlets and enjoy many dining options. There are unique opportunities ahead for Covington.These include retail expansion, high wage employment growth, hotel, banquet and entertainment venues, mixed-use development and a strengthened community identity.The Town Center and Lakepointe projects promise to enhance the city’s amenities and advance its vibrant sense of community. Further, the construction of the new MultiCare Hospital, expected to be complete in 2018, will be a huge addition to Covington’s already diverse medical options. The City is also look forward to several road improvement projects including the SR516 widening from Jenkin’s Creek to 185th Place SE and the 204th Connector from Kent Kangley to SE 256th at Highway 18. Active residents also enjoy many city-sponsored events that promote public involvement and community pride.While the city council encourages economic development, it also believes that the participation of social service programs at a local level is the true soul of the city; recognizing that an unmatched quality of life is a necessity rather than an unattainable goal. Strong partnerships with entities like the Covington Chamber of Commerce, Kent School District, local service clubs and community volunteers help to make that possible and will continue to keep Covington growing toward greatness.
