Heather Ryan wins best licensed massage therapist in Best of the Valley vote By EVAN PAPPAS Staff Reporter
This year’s voters in the Best of the Valley contest have voted Heather Ryan, owner of Healing Garden Day Spa in North Bend, as the best Licensed Massage Therapist in the Valley. Ryan, who has lived in the Valley for 19 years, started the Healing Garden Day Spa in 2012 and has been working as a massage therapist for 10 years. After suffering an injury in a car accident, Ryan was inspired to pursue massage therapy as a career by her physical therapist, Nancy Coltom. She attended the Brian Utting School of Massage in Seattleand graduated in 2006. Since then, Ryan has worked as a massage therapist at various businesses outside of the Valley before starting her own business right in North Bend. “When I started my practice I stayed in the Valley, didn’t go down to Issaquah. I started the Healing Garden a little over five years ago and wanted to create a beautiful place to go to relax, to receive quality massage,” she said. “I love small towns. People take care of one another. I had cancer seven years ago and didn’t have insurance and I was hurting financially. The community got together and had a benefit. They basically rescued me and I was able to pay my rent and buy necessities. It’s the sense of community and that we all take care of one another.” She started out as an independent massage therapist and shared a location with other massage thera-

She moved into a spot on West North Bend Way in downtown North Bend. “It was growth of the business, it was time to expand, the massage was doing so well. I have a small retail space as well, I sell bath and body products, facial products, jewelry and accessories,” she said.
Ryan’s outlook on massage therapy begins and ends with the well-being of the customer, she said. From establishing the look and atmosphere of the office space to the quality of the service itself, Ryan said she puts in all of her effort for her clients. “I make sure that when I have a client come in, I give them 100 percent and they are well taken care of when they come into the

office, its more than a massage, it’s making sure that their health is being taken care of,” she said. “It feels like I’m growing with the city and the Valley. It seems like there is an awful lot of growth… For such a small town it’s amazing how many good resources we have for natural healing.” Over the five years of operation, Ryan has seen her business grow along with the Valley. Snoqualmie’s Black Dog Cafe wins for Best Live Music Venue By CAROL LADWIG Editor
Like a lot of places in the Valley, The Black Dog Cafe in Snoqualmie features live music. What makes the downtown Snoqualmie restaurant, and this year’s winner for Best Place for Live Music stand out, though, is both the amount and range of that music. Shows are scheduled almost every day of the week, including Sunday brunch performances and a Wednesday night open mic tradition that’s continued for 22 years. The bands that perform there are local favorites such as The Winterlings and Strong Sun Moon, and often, national and regional acts on tour. “We get a lot of travelling bands,” said Cristie Coffing, co-owner of The Black Dog with her husband, Greg Ballmer and sister, Anna Boranian. “They’ll hit us up for a Thursday night show and go to the bigger venues in Seattle on Saturday.” For instance, Maxwell Hughes, formerly of The Lumineers, plays the Black Dog with his band, Edison, on Thursday, May 25. What makes The Black Dog a popular stop for bands of all sizes is, as far as Coffing can tell, a combination of things. The small venue is intimate — “We can seat about 40 to 45 people, so we just pack ‘em in,” says Coffing, and it also has good sound, thanks to the efforts of sound technician Mike Antone. “One of the bands that was here told us… if a band likes a place, thinks they’ve been treated well, had good sound mixing, they tell other bands about it” she said. “It’s really
just word of mouth, through the music business.” The Black Dog is open to all types of music, too. “We try to focus on original singer-songwriters,” Coffing said, “but we’ve done everything from folk to rock to death metal… just recently, we started getting in a lot of bluegrass music.” The indie rock Edison show will be one of the few for which the Black Dog charges a cover fee; most shows are free. “Usually it’s just ‘donate to the band,’” said Coffing, “We have donation envelopes and a jar at the door.” The Black Dog also keeps its kitchen open late on music nights, serving dinners until 9 p.m., desserts and lighter fare after that. Wednesday nights are also pretty special events at the Black Dog, when musicians and their supporters gather for open mic events. “The thing I like about our open mic is we get really young people, like age 13, on up to 75, and it’s nice to see them bond,” said Coffing. Music is a shared bond of all those performers, but Coffing notes that the Black Dog isn’t just about music. “Actually, we do all the arts, visual, literary, music, drama…” she said, then listed a half-dozen workshops the business has recently hosted or will soon host, including pottery making, harmonica playing and play writing. “Our goal is to cultivate the arts in our community and wage peace in the Valley,” she added. Readers vote Wall to Wall Home Cleaning as best home cleaning service By EVAN PAPPAS Staff Reporter
Winning for the first time, Wall to Wall Home Cleaning has been voted the winner of the Home Cleaning Service category in the Valley Record’s Best of the Valley vote. Wall to Wall Home Cleaning was started in 2012 by North Bend resident Emma Luttrell, and over the past five years she has been able to grow her business thanks to her local customers. Luttrell started the business by herself and was the only employee for the first two years of operation. She left her previous job after the hours became too much for her to be able to spend time with her daughter. “I started in 2012, I had been doing elder care and working for another cleaning service, and the hours were too much to keep up with a teenage daughter,” she said. “I worked by myself until it grew too big to do that.” With a growing business, Luttrell was able to hire more staff and manage more customers. She has about three employees that work with her five days a week. “I started out my business with one client and just really hustled hard, put my name out there, and it paid off… Within two years I went from one client to over 30,” she said. “At first I didn’t need more helpers, just needed one person

From left: Kaya Luttrell, Emma Luttrell holding her dog Jojo, and Jessica Phillips. to compensate for the work load, I had to bring on more people to have a second team available.” Two of her main employees are her daughter, Kaya, and Jessica Phillips, who have helped her when she was unable to work after being diagnosed with cancer. “My team really stepped up and took care of everything,” she said. “We are a small business and we are very close. I really appreciate my team a lot, I try not
to overburden them and try to only put on their plate what they can handle.” Her business philosophy is to look at the service she provides and question if she would pay for it herself. She is passionate about her standards and wants customers to feel like they are getting the most for the price. “I’ve been in customer service of various types forever. One thing I know, if I was spending the money what would I want to see and how would I want to
be treated spending money on this?” she said. “If clients aren’t happy then it’s obviously not going to work. The best way to keep them happy is to consider yourself and if you were spending money what would you want.” Luttrell said being able to provide a service to
the Valley has let her get to know her clients, in a way she never had before. A 17-year North Bend resident, Luttrell says the community of the Valley is what keeps her here. “My clients are like family to me, most of my clients we have had them a long time. We keep things
up and running. We know their pets and their kids. It’s awesome,” she said. “The community and the people and the support that I’ve had here, especially is what keeps me here. I lived a lot of places in my life, and I have never had such a sense of community as I have had in this Valley.”
