Now, many explorative years later, Kasey and Matthew’s Turntable Kitchen Pairings Boxes are flying out the door of their thriving business, to people of all ages and across every continent. Equal parts recipe-of-the-month club and vinyl-record subscription service, the Pairings Boxes cater to those who don’t have the time or resources to explore new music or new culinary dishes on their own. Monthly mailings include a limited-edition 7-inch vinyl record by a featured artist; a digital mixtape; three seasonal recipes; one or two premium ingredients; and tasting notes. For example, one recent mailing combined music by Local Natives; recipes for simple tomato sauce, pizza with fennel pollen, and pizza with clams, pancetta, and arugula; and ample chili flakes and fennel pollen to encourage experimentation beyond the box. For the Hickeys, establishing Turntable Kitchen and putting down roots in Seattle have meant constantly adjusting
their lifestyle while maintaining a sense of urban life. “We’re in our 30s. We have [three] young kids. We are less focused on going out at night and we are really focused on … setting up our home so that it feels warm and inviting and cozy … a place where we can have friends over and entertain,” Kasey explains. “We still really care about staying up on hip things. We care about food; we care about music; we care about entertaining. But we’re doing a lot of these things at home.” It’s precisely this homegrown passion that propels Turntable Kitchen’s success, as Kasey and Matt delve into the Seattle food and music scene for inspiration and new partnerships. hich musical genres sound best with wild-mushroom bruschetta or agave-glazed spareribs? What creative, seasonal meal might complement the vocal harmonies of Lucius or the indie-rock chords of Tame Impala? Just ask Kasey and Matthew A. Hickey, owners of Turntable Kitchen, a curated website and subscription service that introduces food lovers to new music and music lovers to good food. The concept evolved alongside Matthew and Kasey’s relationship. When the couple met, more than a decade ago, Kasey was a food blogger, photographer, home cook, and professional content creator. She was interested in exploring the world of music, but wasn’t sure where to start. Matthew was an avid music lover and writer (and attorney by trade) with a growing curiosity about food culture. Matthew—who, it must be noted, is not the same Matt Hickey who was recently charged in a high-profile rape case—began hand-selecting playlists to enhance Kasey’s kitchen escapades, and the two creatives started learning from each other. Ultimately, the

Winter Music Festival in Leavenworth, where the Thermals, Lucy Dacus, the Wimps, Sloucher, and many others will warm up the crowd on January 27 and 28. We convinced him to take a break and share a few of his wants this season. Rent Control Over a decade ago, I found myself wanting to do something good for the music industry and for artists while living in the Bay Area. The only problem was that the cost of living had led to a disturbing reality: There were no artists left there to work with. Today I watch the same forces that drove me out of the Bay Area taking hold of Seattle, driving up housing costs and rent much as they did in the Bay Area. An NHL Team As a native Hawaiian, hockey was never on my radar as a sport. That all changed when I saw my first Seattle Thunderbirds game. I immediately fell in love. Now I want a pro team. Power Tools and Lumber For the first Christmas in my adult life, I’m simultaneously a father and someone who lives in a house with a garage. So it’s a requirement that I have power tools and lumber to cut for no particular reason. Burritos God, I love burritos. Just saying the word makes me happy. But damn, Seattle, our burrito game is seriously lacking. And before you say anything, yes, I have been to that place you think is great, and no, it is not. Only two places I’ve found in the entire Puget Sound region do it for me, but really, a good burrito should never be more than 10 minutes away. We have work to do. Media Literacy If this election has taught us anything, it’s that we are failing as a society when it comes to understanding what is and isn’t good journalism. I wish Seattle would become the U.S. capital of media literacy by requiring that the subject be taught at the junior-high and highschool level. I would also like to see our news outlets renew their commitment to responsible journalism. There are encouraging signs, including the establishment of The People’s Press Club of Seattle. Thanks for the plug, Kevin!] Every major news outlet in the region should be committed to educating its audience on what good journalism is, while also being an example of it. ■

On Sunday, the light rail delivers you to the Capitol Hill Farmers Market (Broadway Ave. E and E Pine St.). Nosh on tamales, poffertjes, or a Washington apple, washed down with fresh-brewed kombucha and ginger beer. Then tick off someone on your list with locally-made jam or kimchi. veryone in Seattle knows that we have a housing crisis. Those paying close attention will see how overburdened and underequipped the shelters are to address this crisis on their own, especially as winter rolls around. Sadly, this is nothing new, but the rising numbers of the homeless have made the various organizations providing shelter and counseling all the more indispensable. Peace for the Streets by Kids from the Streets (PSKS) was founded in 1995 specifically to aid homeless youth, who are already among the most marginalized and invisible members of the homeless population. Giving visibility and shelter to homeless and at-risk youth in our city was not always a popular mission, and PSKS has often had to move thanks to disgruntled neighbors. Despite this, PSKS has leaned into its mission and grown over the years. Overnight shelters, laundry facilities, and provisions can be life-saving, but these things alone will not cure homelessness, especially among youth who are still trying to acquire an education or job skills. Hence, PSKS also works to lower barriers to education by covering fees for GED tests and obtaining photo IDs. The organization’s RISE program, run in partnership with Seattle Education Access and Seattle Central Community College, provides alternative schooling options for participants who have not found success in traditional education settings. Some youth need work experience that will get them into more stable employ-
ment, and PSKS provides that through the Lasting Employment Advancement Program (LEAP). The three-month paid internship allows participants to become advocates and ambassadors among PSKS, homeless youths, and the larger community. They are even tackling the empathy gap between youth and law enforcement through their conversational Donut Dialogues program. All this may become more important in the next few years based on changes at the federal level. Housing advocates are already bracing for cuts to programs and a greater lack of empathy between government and the homeless, with Ben Carson being tapped by Donald Trump to run the department of Housing and Urban Development. Carson has claimed that poverty is a choice, as is one’s sexuality; the issues overlap in that a disproportionately high number of homeless youth identify as LGBT. Many became homeless after being kicked out of their homes for their sexuality or are fleeing violence. Carson’s appointment does not bode well for federal programs addressing homelessness and affordability around the country. Seattle will need to be very committed, proactive, and collaborative within its own borders to tackle these issues. Organizations like PSKS are helping to define and create a structure for these ongoing conversations. More urgently, PSKS is providing vital support in the present. That’s something worth supporting year round, but especially in these colder months. PSKS.org ■
