T
hirty years ago, if a fortune teller had predicted my future life on a bucolic, sparsely populated island in Puget Sound, I would have quietly laughed. Clearly the crystal ball had malfunctioned. Except that three years later, the key I held in my hand fit into the front door of a house we just bought on Vashon — a bucolic, sparsely populated island in Puget Sound.

Like most non-native Vashonites, my passage to the island comes with a story. After all, to settle on Vashon is not an obvious nor necessarily easy choice, especially for someone raised in the Midwest with visions of inhabiting a bright building in New York City. There are ferry lines to deal with, fewer retail choices and, 30 years ago, a minimal arts scene and virtually no nightlife. Yet, after almost three decades of life on Vashon, the narra-
tive of our arrival takes a back seat to the reason why my husband and I — like so many before and after us — chose to stay and make the island our home. There are the easy answers — less congestion for one. Vashon’s population hovers around 11,000 compared to its geographical cousin Manhattan that similarly measures about 15 miles long but proclaims a population of more than 1.6 million. There’s much more open space, thanks to Vashon’s 5-and 10-acre zoning and the Vashon-Maury Island Land Trust’s dedicated preservation of natural ecosystems. Then there’s the quietude, punctuated not by the jangle of late-night sirens, but the baritone hoot of a great horned owl or the early morning call of a pileated woodpecker. There are the dramatic answers — bald eagles standing like common seagulls atop old pier pilings in Tramp Harbor; a minke whale cavorting in the backwash of the ferry; the stillness of a morning on Fisher Pond in late September, with the rusty reds and golden hues of big leaf maples in perfect

reflection; the opportunity to circumnavigate one’s home under sail, by rowing an eight-person shell, kayaking or even by foot to see, firsthand, the geologic variations contained on our small island. And then there are the burgeoning answers — the innovative and creative arts community with two dedicated arts venues, multiple galleries and music spots; the ever-expanding farmers market and farm stands; and the salmon that once again spawn in our creeks. During our early years on Vashon — before the passenger-only ferry — the commute to our Seattle jobs meant leaving and returning home in the dark, not seeing our yard until the shades went up on Saturday morning. The question of why we bothered to live on Vashon began to ruminate in my head. With the birth of our daughter and with both families living several thousand miles away, the rumination turned obsessive. And yet, when we sold our first house on Vashon, we bought another on Maury. An island, like Darwin historically

noted, is a natural selector. Vashon — being an island — is in a sense self-selecting. The wife of an off-island colleague once declared Vashon held astonishing beauty, but she could never live so far away from a mall. Those who stay find ways to make island life work. They may not only tolerate the commute, but value the time to socialize, knit, catch up on email, absorb the salmon-colored sunsets. They may work for island businesses or schools, telecommute or fashion alternative means to earn a wage as a farmer, artist, musician or ruminant-renter. They know how far away the mall lies, and the distance makes them happy. If there are 11,000 inhabitants on our rock, there are 11,000 reasons to live here. For this writer, the reason is embarrassingly obvious: the people. Our community. Perhaps it’s the boundary of water separating us from the mainland that fosters a natural unity. Or it may be the island’s self-selection that attracts a certain type of person because people keep coming to Vashon and our community — despite conflicts about the placement of
the new library, or whether to build our new arts building — only grows stronger. When a community is strong, there is heart, and when there is heart there is magic. The best magic. People magic. Should trouble befall a fellow citizen, friends, even acquaintances, practically trip over each other to provide food, transportation or a bouquet of purple hellebores and sunny daffodils. There are island-wide benefits for those in need, do-gooder groups that form as readily as fog in October, countless random acts of kindness — stopping to help a lost dog or runaway pig off the road, helping to rebuild a business damaged by fire or heavy snow, diving headlong into 50-degree water to rescue the person who drove their car off the ferry dock. These are the moments that define a community. They are the heart of our bucolic, not-quite-as-sparsely populated island in Puget Sound. With the benefit of 30 years of hindsight, had a crystal ball foretold my life on Vashon, I would have quietly laughed with deep knowing and profound appreciation.

Take a hike: Through the woods or to the water, there’s plenty to see

or fans of forest walks and hiking, Vashon offers a multitude of options thanks to the efforts of the Vashon-Maury Island Land Trust, King County and the Vashon Park District. The island is host to trails, preserves and parks from top to bottom. On the horizon, the county and Land Trust envision a linked trail system that would run the length of the island, but for now Vashon’s quiet beauty can be taken in one protected area or preserve at a time.
Island Center Forest At more than 400 acres, Island Center Forest stakes claim to the largest and most popular collection of trails on Vashon. Once a working forest, the site is now owned by King County and managed by a collective of volunteers known as the Friends of Island Center Forest. Trails, ponds and extensive wetlands are found here, as is an artful, timber-frame shelter — perfect for picnics and social gatherings. There are maps available
at trailhead kiosks. Insider Tips: During wetter weather, the trails can get quite muddy, so choose your footwear accordingly; and the forest is closed to everyone but hunters for two to three weeks each fall (typically October). How to get there: There are several entrances into the forest, but the one that offers the best parking is off of Vashon Highway. Heading south from town, turn right on SW 188th Street. Go to the end (about a quarter of a mile); the entrance is on the right. Leashed dogs, horses and mountain bikes are allowed.
Dockton Forest This is an expansive forest that is home to a web of trails used by walkers, hikers and equestrians. Venturers can go shore-to-shore, as there are trails leading from Dockton Park on Quartermaster Harbor all the way to the eastern edge of Maury Island on Puget Sound. Insider Tip: Mountain bike enthusiasts will soon have dedicated trails in Dockton Forest; construction by community volunteers is underway. The first trails are expected to be completed by summer of 2016.
How to get there: The easiest entrance is across the road from Dockton Park. On Maury Island, take Dockton Road until you reach the park, which is on the right. Immediately on the left is a small parking lot for the forest/trail area. There is also a gated entrance west of Gold Beach at the corner of 79th Avenue SW and SW 260th Street. Leashed dogs, horses and mountain bikes are allowed.
Fisher Pond Preserve A half-mile trail circumnavigates the lovely Fisher Pond, named for islander Bill Fisher, who donated this 90-acre preserve to the Land Trust. At the west end you’ll find a picnic shelter and table perched above the water, offering views of the shallow, bird-friendly pond. The Land Trust has built additional trails — one from the east end of the loop, which extends through a forest to Cove Road, and one from the west end, which extends almost to Agren Park. Insider Tip: Every so often, if it gets cold enough in the winter, the pond freezes and islanders go skating. Those without ice skates need

not worry though, as a collection of skates of varying sizes is traditionally (if not somewhat mysteriously) found by the pond on these occasions. How to get there: Fisher Pond is located on Bank Road, about a mile west of town. Just before reaching the pond, there is a pullout along the road with room for cars to park. The trail heads north from there. Dogs are not allowed at Fisher Pond.
Shinglemill Creek/Fern Cove Winding from the woods to the sound, this delightful two-mile traverse takes hikers along the crest of a ridge into a tree-studded ravine, across Needle Creek and along the shores of Shinglemill Creek — one of the island’s major salmon-bearing streams. At the end of this topographically diverse trek, cross Cedarhurst Road to pick up the final leg, a stretch that leads to the expansive mudflats at Fern Cove on Colvos Passage. Insider Tip: Bring your binoculars as birds are in abundance here, especially at Fern Cove. How to get there: From town, head about two miles north on the highway then west on SW 156th Street about a third of a mile. The trailhead is on the right side of the road with a small parking area. Leashed dogs are allowed on the trail, but not at Fern Cove.
Judd Creek/Paradise Valley Loop Trail This newest addition to the island’s trail collection was completed in December of 2015 and is easily a competitor for top billing. With bridges and boardwalks looping a mile through the forests and meadows of Paradise Valley and across Judd Creek — another major salmon-bearing stream — the trail is fairly flat and a good choice for birders and families with young children. Insider Tips: Judd Creek is also home to the rare Western pearlshell freshwater mussel, and Paradise Valley holds historical significance as the second oldest homestead site on the island. How to get there: From town, head south on Vashon Highway; then head west on SW 204th Street; then head south on 111th Street. The trailhead is found off of 111th, between 204th and 216th streets. Pedestrians and leashed dogs only on this trail.
Christensen Pond Preserve This birder’s paradise includes 30 acres on the west side of the island, protected in 2000 with the help of the Vashon-Maury Island Audubon Society. A haven for migratory songbirds, waterfowl, owls and hawks, it features a small pond and extensive wetlands. A not-quite mile long trail circles the pond through a pleasant coniferous forest.

Insider Tip: The best pond-viewing spot is at the north end of the trail, so head to the right as it forks after the entrance. How to get there: The pond is due west of Burton on Wax Orchard Road, just south of 232nd Street. Watch for a small sign that says “Nature Preserve.” No dogs allowed.
Burton Acres This 64-acre park on the Burton Peninsula offers a number of user-established walking, hiking and equestrian trails through a mature and diverse forest. Here you will find big-leaf maples, Douglas firs, the occasional Pacific yew … and lots of deer. Insider Tip: The 25 mph speed limit on the peninsula is taken seriously by residents as well as the many visitors to the Jensen Point recreation area, which includes lots of dogs and kids; please be mindful while driving through this neighborhood. How to get there: From town, take Vashon Highway south to Burton, then head east on SW Burton Drive. Turn right at 97th Avenue and follow the road to Jensen Point Park where parking is available. Leashed dogs are allowed.

Explore Point Robinson SHORT TAKE
The Point Robinson Lighthouse celebrated its centennial in 2015 and in those 100 years became Vashon’s most iconic landmark. Located on the eastern-most point of Maury Island, the grounds boast grassy fields for picnics and relaxing, keeper’s quarters that can be rented through the Vashon Park District (vashonparkdistrict. org) and a long stretch of walkable beach. Lighthouse tours are available
between noon and 4 p.m. every Sunday between mid-May and mid-September. Tours can also be booked by contacting Captain Joe Wubbold at 206-463-6672. Getting there: From town, go south on Vashon Highway. Turn left at SW 204th Street. When it comes to a T at the water, turn right onto Dockton Road and continue straight onto Maury. Continue east on Point Robinson Road. The road ends at the park.

An island in the sun: Soak up rays on a beach From sandy beaches, to waterfront parks, to classic Northwest shoreline scattered with driftwood and rocks, visitors are bound to find what they’re looking for on a beach along Vashon’s 51 miles of shoreline. Here’s a list of beaches that are open to the public.
Dockton Park

This 23-acre, King County-owned park doesn’t have much sand, but is an island favorite — especially among teens, who swear the water is the warmest on Vashon. The park has a playground, grass lawn, restrooms, boat launch and pier.

KVI Beach This beach gets its name from the nearby AM radio tower that provides not only a radio signal, but a roosting site for bald eagles. A top choice among locals due to its expansive sandy spit and slow-moving slough, KVI is perfect for young children and sunbathers. Go at low tide for even more space on the sand. Dogs are allowed.
Directions: From town, go south on Vashon Highway. Turn left at SW 204th Street. When it comes to a T at the water’s edge, turn right onto Dockton Road SW to cross the isthmus to Maury. Turn left on Dockton Road and continue south to Dockton.

Lisabeula Park One of Vashon’s few west-facing public beaches, Lisabuela is the perfect spot for sunsets and family picnics. Its large grass field is ideal for Frisbee throwing. Picnic tables, barbeques and portable restrooms are provided. Directions: From town, head south on Vashon Highway. Turn right at SW 204th Street, left on 111th Avenue SW, right on SW 220th Street. Continue down a steep, winding road.
Maury Island Marine Park Once a gravel pit, these 320 acres are now a park owned by King County. Due to an ongoing restoration campaign, the park — which begins in the woods and ends at the shore — looks increasingly natural and verdant. The steep, half-mile walk from the parking lot to the beach is worth it for the views of Mount Rainier and the expansive calm-watered sound.

The North End The north-end ferry dock during low tide is a fine place to be stuck if you find yourself in that situation. The beach in front of La Playa Mexican Restaurant is a fun one to explore with Blake Island directly to the north. Look for sea critters, especially under the dock, but be respectful of nearby homes.

Winghaven Park Twelve acres nestled on a quiet part of the north end off the highway, the park suggests Vashon’s grand past; it’s the site of a former waterfront estate and still boasts a crumbling balustrade that yields to stunning views of Mount Rainier. Owned by the Vashon Park District, it’s also a great place to collect beach glass at low tide.

Directions: From the north-end ferry dock, head south on Vashon Highway. In about a mile, take a left on Cunliffe Road. The park entrance is a half-mile down the hill, down a wooden staircase on the left side.
Grab a board While Puget Sound’s lack of waves makes it tough to surf off Vashon’s beaches, the typically calm waters are perfect for kayaking and paddleboarding. Vashon offers two places to rent paddling gear. Some 400 cyclists are expected to come to Vashon in September for what is considered the toughest ride in Puget Sound: the Passport to Pain (P2P). The ride, now in its sixth year, is a fundraiser f for the Vashon Island Rowing Club and is marked by both its difficulty — 10,000 feet of elevation gain — and its spirit, with food and humor served in equal measure at the ride’s abundant checkpoints. For riders who do not wish to take on the full 10,000 feet of uphill climb in an 80-mile ride dubbed “The Idiot,” the 50-mile “Weasel” and the 30-mile “Weenie” are offered. At the end of the day, riders, rowers and community members are invited to gather at Jensen Point for a closing barbecue. Lest anyone think the ride is a race, organizers have countered the notion by awarding the first rider back the “Hot Spatula” and the chore of flipping burgers for awhile. Last year, people relaxed at the barbecue for a long time afterward — something Bruce Morser, the brains behind the P2P — said he would like to see happen again this year. “We hope more people will come on down,” he said. “Join in. See what we are up to.” Last year, the ride, with more than 300 participants, raised roughly $20,000 for the rowing club and supported the purchase of boats and equipment for the club’s teen and adult members. Morser said he hopes the event will raise more this year, but organizers have not set an amount. “We never have a goal. We are so pleased this works at all,” he said. “You can raise this much money and have fun doing it. Who would have thought?” Registration for the ride, slated to begin at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at Jensen Point, is now open. See passport2pain.org.

Cycle the island’s open roads on your own time So you’ve thought about it, but the Passport to Pain just seems a little too intense for you. Not to worry, while hills do abound on the glacier-created island, Vashon is known as a great place to cycle past forests, farms and beaches, as well as some great places to rest and eat. Though the roads can be narrow, cars are often scarce, and the share-the-road ethic runs strong on Vashon. There are plenty of great routes to consider. Popular among serious cyclists is a 32-mile loop of the island, which takes riders along the quiet west side, as far south as the so-called Tahlequah Y near the southend ferry, and back north along Quartermaster Harbor. Add in a circumnavigation of Maury Island, and it becomes a 50-mile loop. A 12-mile loop starts at the north-end ferry terminal, heads down the highway to 171st and then veers east along the Dilworth Loop, ultimately circling back to the ferry.
Another fantastic loop — especially on a warm, summer day — takes riders from the north-end ferry dock south to Quartermaster Drive and then north to KVI Beach, a great place to stop and relax. All of these routes, and much more information, can be found at stov.us/activities/bikeMaps.html.

Helpful information Despite its proximity to Seattle, Vashon is a world apart. The two grocery stores close early — Thriftway at 9 p.m. and IGA at 10 p.m. — and there’s no bus service on Sundays. Here are a few other things you might find helpful. Note: The only area code on the island is 206.

From capture to enrapture
Orcas have a history with Vashon
BY SARAH LOW BEACHCOMBER STAFF WRITER The Pacific Northwest draws travelers year-round with its natural beauty, temperate climate and seemingly limitless outdoor opportunities. But there is one natural attraction that seems to define the quintessential Northwest experience — killer whales (orcas) in the wild. And if you are visiting Vashon, you might just be lucky enough to see some. While there are several different killer whale populations that visit the area, the inshore waters of southern British Columbia and Washington, known as the Salish Sea, are home to a distinct group of orcas known as the Southern Resident Killer Whales (SRKW). This three-pod (J, K and L) group of 83* members is comprised of familial sub-groups that are
centered around the older females, as both male and female offspring remain close to their mothers for life. They differ from other orca groups in their genetics, diet, repertoire of calls, appearance, behavior and culture. They eat fish (primarily Chinook salmon), and given their low numbers, are also listed as endangered in both the U.S. and Canada. It is members of this group, as well as a few Transients — marine mammal-eating killer whales that are most often found close to shorelines from Mexico to the Bering Sea — that you are most likely to see in the waters around the island. * (The SRKWs have an 84th member, Lolita, a member of L-pod who is in captivity at the Miami Seaquarium). “We have a special place here,” says Ann “Orca Annie” Stateler, coordinator

of the Vashon Hydrophone Project and resident killer whale expert. “You can see them from shore and don’t have to go out in boats, which is best for reducing the harmful impacts of noise on their environment.” Stateler trained as a marine naturalist and interned at the Whale Museum in Friday Harbor, Washington, which promotes stewardship of the SRKWs and the Salish Sea ecosystem through education and research. She established the Vashon Hydrophone — an underwater microphone system to listen for whale calls as well as vessel noise that can be harmful to the whales — in 2004, and is also the Marine Mammal Stranding Response Network coordinator for the island. While visits to south Puget Sound by these special black and white beauties are fairly common, islanders were caught off guard in early November of 2015 when one SRKW pod came right into Quartermaster Harbor. According to Stateler, older islanders remember a time when the orcas would frequent the harbor on their spring-through-early-winter travels, but that changed about 50 years ago when the captivity business took off. Stateler believes that a terrifying capture event here is likely what kept them from the enclosed waters of the harbor for so long. “Granny (matriarch of the SRKW J-pod, estimated to be about 105 years old) would remember,” she said of the whales. “She was there.” 22

Indeed, one of the reasons that this population is so depleted is that from 1965 to 1976, capturing killer whales to sell to the marine park industry (mainly Sea World) was big business, and the Southern Residents suffered the most. In October of 1965, Vashon residents were witnesses to the attempted capture of a young female orca that had been promised to Sea World in San Diego. Using helicopters to drop explosives and shoot harpoons, a group of hunters chased a group of Southern Residents around Vashon, Commencement Bay and the Tacoma Narrows. At one point the hunters tried to herd the whales into Quartermaster Harbor, thinking that the enclosed space would make it easier, but the whales didn’t go in. They were surrounded a few days later in Carr Inlet (south of the Narrows), where the adolescent female, the original “Shamu,” was captured — her mother was killed during the event, and Shamu died after six years of captivity in San Diego.
Last year saw both good news and bad news for our beloved SRKWs. The births of nine calves were the first since 2012, but while eight have survived, only two are known to be female. For their long-term survival, it is not enough. Research and conservation are imperative if we are to see any meaningful change in their precarious existence, and Stateler says that even visitors can help. “We are so privileged that these whales still visit us,” she notes, “especially after how they’ve been treated by some humans. Vashon (Point Robinson in particular) is clearly a special place for them, and they’ve probably been coming here for thousands of years to look for food or have their babies. We need to make sure that it stays important, by being smart, respectful and treading lightly.” The SRKWs are seen near Vashon most often in the spring through the early winter months, but can be in the area at any time of the year. Stateler’s helpful hints for whale spotters include: reporting all whale sightings to the Vashon Hydrophone Project (can be any whales, not just orcas) and stay on shore to watch them — no boats means no harmful boat noise and staying out of your car keeps your carbon footprint to a minimum. With a population close to 120 before the captures began, it is estimated that 58 were removed or killed during that time. Since then, declining salmon populations, toxicity from pollution in the food chain and noise from ocean vessel traffic that disrupts the whales’ ability to communicate with each other to locate food have all contributed to the struggle of this group to not just replenish its numbers, but survive. 2016-2017 DESTINATION VASHON

While these two groups of riders find themselves in very different circumstances, some working and some looking for recreation, the experience of riding a ferry never loses its magic. Ask any islander or take a look at any of Vashon’s many Facebook pages, and there always seems to be a common thread; despite the sometimes cancelled or delayed sailings that make commuters late for work or appointments, the awe-inspiring views and the relaxation that come from riding a ferry are ever-present. In late March, islander Gregg Erickson posted a photo of Mount Rainier from the Vashon-West Seattle ferry

in a Vashon Facebook group with a fill-in-the-blank for group members: “Maybe the best thing about commuting from Seattle to Vashon Island is ___________? You fill in the blank. I love the view of Mount Rainier.” Following the question are 21 comments about favorite ferry things, centered around leaving the hustle and bustle behind in favor of Vashon’s more laid back life and enjoying the views. “Taking in beautiful scenery while having great conversations and enjoying those special relationships … it’s a good life,” Erickson said. Vashon is one of a few of the state’s islands that have no bridges connecting them to the rest of the state — a proposed plan to build a bridge in 1992 was met with vehement opposition. This fact has allowed Vashon to preserve a rural lifestyle and offer an escape from the mainland that is just 15-20 minutes off Seattle’s shores. Because of the island’s dependence on ferries, the boats have become more than just a means to get to the city: They have become a part of life. Stories abound about babies being born on the crossing from Vashon to Seattle — there are no hospitals on the island — weddings taking place,
people meeting their soulmates and birthday parties being held at sea. In fact, Washington State Ferries (WSF) spokesman Ian Sterling said that since November of 2012, there have been 14 “near-births” (mothers in labor) across the system’s four routes that transport from areas with no hospitals to the mainland. Three babies have been born on boats or at ferry terminals in that time, two of which were on the Vashon-West Seattle route. In 2015, Sterling said the ferry system’s records show 19 couples married aboard state ferries over the system’s 12 routes. But the state’s ferries weren’t always the iconic green and white steel monoliths that carry the strong sense of place and promise of a relaxing ride. Vashon’s ferries have an especially interesting history that begins with pioneers arriving on the island in 1852 and beginning to log the land. More settlers followed, and by the 1880s, the island population was large enough for semi-regular ship service. Island historian Bruce Haulman said that islander S. D. “Salmon” Sherman purchased a lifeboat and refitted it as a schooner, naming it Old Black Joe. It made semi-regular runs between Quartermaster and Tacoma.
In 1890, islander Frank Bibbins began the first regular daily service to Quartermaster, making two daily trips. Cars came to the island in 1907, and the island’s first auto ferry arrived in 1916, when the King County Ferry System began running the M. V. Vashon between Des Moines and Portage (near the land bridge connecting Vashon and Maury). “The ferry wars of this era were just the start of ongoing struggles over ferry service, costs and reliability that continue to this day,” Haulman writes in his book, “A Brief History of Vashon Island.” By the 1920s, Vashon had “the best ferry service it would ever experience,” according to Haulman, but “ferry wars erupted in the 1930s ... as the Great Depression put pressures on all aspects of ferry service.” By the 1930s, ferry service was predominantly in the hands of Captain Alexander Peabody, owner of the Black Ball Line, and many islanders reportedly felt he had a monopoly on the ferry business. Haulman said that at the end of 1946, Peabody raised fares by 30 percent and reduced service. A strike in March of 1947 shut the ferries down for a week and Peabody was requesting another

10 percent fare hike. Stranded for six days, islanders decided they had had enough and formed their own ferry system in 1948, just in time for Peabody to shut down the system one more time. “Captain Peabody announced that he would run his ferry ... from Vashon to Fauntleroy ... ” Haulman writes in his book. “The Vashon (ferry) commissioners were advised that if the (ferry) landed at Vashon, Peabody would have the right to continue service to the island. When they decided to keep it from landing, the Vashon Vigilates were born.” Armed with axe handles and other long tools generously donated by the island hardware store’s owner, the Vigilantes waited with deputies and, when the ferry got near enough, “the Vigilantes stuck out their long-handled tools and shoved it away,” Haulman writes. “Peabody never again tried to regain service to Vashon.” The Vashon Vigilantes have since gone down in island lore. The Vashon Ferry System created by the islanders ran for three years and disbanded when the current
Washington State Ferries (WSF) began operating on June 1, 1951. In WSF’s more than 60 years, hundreds of millions have travelled by ferry and made memories on the iconic boats. Nearly 24 million people used the ferry system in 2015, 2.9 million of whom travelled to or from Vashon. So pick up a paper ferry schedule at one of the ferry terminals, hop on a boat and enjoy the view — Mount Rainier will likely greet you from her lofty perch above the sound and the clouds.

It was an all-out race to the finish line in April 2016, one year after construction on Vashon Center for the Arts’ new Katherine L White Hall began, but despite the wettest winter on record, crews completed the 2,000-square-foot building on time. Since its completion, the hall has held multiple performances from island arts organizations ranging from the island’s choral group, to the Vashon Opera, to Vashon Center for the Arts’ (VCA) Center for Dance’s programs. When visitors step through the tall wood and glass doors, past the courtyard on the northwest corner containing the large outdoor sculptures by islanders Julie Speidel, Mark Bennion and Hans Nelsen, they are greeted by a spacious lobby with polished, stained concrete floors, soaring ceilings and a large, dedicated art gallery. A kiosk housed next to the gallery holds smaller works of art — including pieces hand-carved from the white oak tree that once stood nearby. The 300-seat auditorium with cast-in-place concrete walls and fir trim is designed for natural acoustics, which accounts for its sizable interior volume. 28

Behind the curtain, the theater offers a functional and light-filled green room that accommodates not just performers, but serves as a classroom and meeting space. Two dressing rooms, a full-size kitchen, loading dock, offices and access to both the catwalks above the stage and the orchestra pit below add to the functional areas. Throughout the LEED Silver-certified building, structural elements serve as the final finish, and artwork by islanders is integrated as special elements throughout the structure. “The building is impressive,” VCA Executive Director Molly Reed said days before the theater opened to the public on April 23. “When I first stepped into the
theater, all I could say was ‘ah’ as I teared up. It’s been seven long years.” Seven years is only part of a much longer odyssey that began as a dream to build a community art center more than 20 years ago. Successfully navigating the turbulent waters toward realizing such a vision would not have been achieved, much less begun, without the generosity of islander Katherine “Kay” White. A longtime member of Vashon Island Chorale, White, 95, was fed up with fitting the 80-plus member chorale into the nave of Bethel Church. She envisioned a different scenario that included good acoustics and a proper stage. “I didn’t know Kay or her lawyer,” Reed 2016-2017 DESTINATION VASHON

said, recalling the warm day in August of 2007 when she received a phone call from White’s island attorney, Margaret Koch, “but (Koch) said, ‘I have a client who is tired of people talking about this (arts center) on this island for so many years and never being able to get it done. She is willing to invest a substantial estate in it.’ Koch mentioned to me a sum of around $10 million that day.” If White’s wish and financial gift launched the arts center, then it was the thousands of hours spent by staff, board members and volunteers planning, working with the architectural firm LMN and raising funds that brought the project to fruition. With $2.1 million in grants from the state, $1.1 million from the county, $2.5 million from the former Vashon Allied Arts board, staff and campaign cabinet, Puget Sound Energy and foundations, the remaining amount came from the island
with gifts ranging from $5 to more than $1 million. “People didn’t think we could do it,” Reed said, “but they didn’t take into account the strength of our community, our love of the arts and that we are a 50-year-old organization this year.” From chamber music, to rock ‘n’ roll and soul, summer art and dance education camps using the stage, VCA Center for Dance’s annual performances and more, Reed said future visions for VCA are only beginning to flourish. “With so much more room for gallery and wall space, with a sprung dance floor on the stage, there are so many opportunities to bring in other art forms, but we also hope there will be community dinners in the lobby. We want to use the entire building,” she said, “not only for arts programming but to host events that might appeal to people who might not want to attend an

arts event. We want to build that connection with the community, and we have the space to do it. I hope people will discover there is a place for everyone here.” Located at Center — the intersection of Vashon Highway and Cemetery Road that is one of the county’s most historic intersections — the building is flanked by VCA’s former site, the 100-year-old Blue Heron built in the early 1900s by the Odd Fellows, an early fraternal organization. Kitty corner from VCA is another hub of activity that takes place in a historic building. The Vashon Island Coffee Roasterie is a favorite spot to enjoy a cup of coffee, grab a bite to eat and relax on the front porch. The building, also over 100 years old, was an early home of the coffee company that eventually became Seattle’s Best Coffee. Beans are still roasted there, and a small museum features coffee antiques. In the back of the Roasterie, Zuzu’s Ice Cream serves up frozen delights during the warmer months. Also in the Roasterie building is Minglement, an organic health food store established in 1979. Shoppers can head to the back of Minglement, where Bookman West offers an impressive collection of rare, collectible and signed books, and Common Thread has fabric art and accessories by a slate of island artists. Across Cemetery Road, the two-story Fuller Store is the oldest commercial building on Vashon. It currently holds a barber shop and Treasure Island antique store. Vashon Opera: Big city shows with no city hassle Creating shows worthy of city audiences, Vashon Opera is a rarity thanks to a pair of professional opera singers who relocated to the island from New York City. The island opera company became a reality in 2008. Since its inception, the company has drawn sellout crowds and considerable praise. Jennifer and Andy Krikawa, the founding couple, have produced over a dozen fullscale operas, including “La Boheme,” “Madama Butterfly” and “Don Giovanni.” The all volunteer-run company has been an effort of more than 90 Vashon community members donating their time and talents to create top-notch opera. The company brings up-and-coming singers as well as well-known performers and talented orchestral musicians to the Vashon Center for the Arts stage. Season eight of the Vashon Opera opens in September with “Dialogues of the Carmelites” by Francis Poulenc. The story, set during the French Revolution, tells the tale of loyalty and sacrifice with a haunting, modern musical score. Next May, the company will produce

Drama Dock makes community theater shine Celebrating 40 years of theatrical productions, Drama Dock is an island institution. The community theater company showcases Vashon’s remarkable thespians with a full season of plays and musicals. Some of the shows recently produced by the nonprofit include “Arsenic and Old Lace” by Joseph Kesselring, “The Curious Savage” by John Patrick and “Inspecting Carol” by Daniel Sullivan. An island alive with the sound of music ost weekend evenings, Vashon’s venues come alive with the sound of music — from folk, rock and jazz to chamber and opera. First Friday Festivities On the first Friday of every month, galleries and businesses in town open new art exhibits and shows. Islanders and visitors flock to town and fill the sidewalks as they cruise from gallery to gallery to see new artwork, socialize and, at some places, grab snacks and wine. Vashon’s vibrant arts scene includes many spots — restaurants, shops, banks and even a senior center and care center — that show artwork. In addition to the month’s featured artists, places offer artist receptions, live music and snacks. Studio tour shows where magic happens Vashon’s Art Studio Tour started some 25 years ago as a way for the island’s small pottery community to sell its wares. As the arts community has grown, the tour has expanded to include all artists and developed into a beloved twice-yearly tradition, typically held the first two weekends in May and December. This year, the tour will be in June and December, when more than100 artists will open their studio doors, inviting the public to come in, look around and, if they wish to do so, purchase art directly from the artist. Visitors can step into a glassblowing studio and watch a veteran glassblower at work, a yurt on a small working farm where delicate Ukrainian eggs are painted, a cottage where a potter works at her wheel or a home where a celebrated jeweler sells intricate silver bells. Vashon’s prodigious arts community produces an array of artwork in various media,

including paintings, textiles, pottery, jewelry, blown glass, candles, tiles, garden art and painted furniture. The tour is also a wonderful way to see the island: Many of the studios are tucked in the woods or perched above the water in intimate, private settings. Each stop along the way is like entering another world. The summer Art Studio Tour will be held on the weekends of June 18-19 and 25-26. For an island of just 11,000 people, Vashon certainly has a lot of fingers in the broadcast media pie. Here amongst the rolling hills and organic farms, you’ll find a community FM radio station, an AM emergency alert network, a TV station and a website that links you to hundreds of hours of diverse local entertainment from an array of talented DJs, producers and musicians. You can even stream it all from the comfort of your car by downloading the free Voice of Vashon web app. It’s island-powered media and it’s right at your fingertips when you tune to KVSH at 101.9 FM. At a time when big-city commer-
cial stations are becoming less local, with skeleton staffing and imported programming, Voice of Vashon is kickin’ it old school, becoming the very embodiment of what community radio has always represented to small-town America: A virtual town square, where friends and neighbors create home-grown, locally produced content. On KVSH, more than 40 volunteer producers and disc jockeys create a dizzying array of original programs from a spacious back-to-the-future broadcast studio right in the heart of Vashon town. Scramble. For travel guidance, ferry notifications and other helpful or urgent information, tune to Voice of Vashon’s emergency alert station at 1650 AM. On most days you’ll get a looped recording that tells you where to find services on the island such as gas, groceries and ATMs. When important notices regarding ferry service, road closures or power outages crop up, the default message is overridden by the more time-sensitive alert while a light flashes over “reminder signs” scattered along Vashon Highway and on Maury Island. When combined with a TV station and two newspapers, Vashon Island has a large media footprint for such an isolated, bucolic community. How did it all happen so quickly? Well, there was nothing quick about it. The story of The Little Station That Could goes all the way back to just before the turn of the century. (Cue intro music) When the FCC opened up space on the dial in 1999 for thousands of local, low-power community FM radio stations to hit the air, Voice of Vashon jumped right in, building a rudimentary broadcast studio in an island doctor’s spare office. Soon afterward, the station moved to an empty bedroom in the basement of a private home. While waiting for its FCC license, VoV went live on the Internet with a smattering of dedicated volunteers on a shoestring budget. The fledgling web radio station featured a bit of live programming and The Jazz Guy, a weekly hour-long show created by 68-year-old island jazz aficionado, Bill Wood. Later, after moving the studio to a cement building hidden away far from town, word came down from 2016-2017 DESTINATION VASHON

Washington D.C. that the low-power FM dreams of many thousands of applicants had been scuttled by Congress under intense lobbying from the nation’s largest broadcast conglomerates. As Voice of Vashon was already webcasting, the station decided it would not fold up its tent like most everyone else, but rather try to hang in there long enough for the FCC to come around. In 2007, VoV built the network of transmitters that now delivers emergency alerts at 1650 AM. A public access TV station was acquired for beaming community meetings and locally-produced video to islanders. Finally, 15 years after Voice of Vashon came to be, Congress reversed itself and opened up the dial for new community FM stations in and around big cities. As for The Jazz Guy, the show that helped keep VoV’s head above water while waiting for a broadcast license, host Bill Wood is 84 now. He’s about to celebrate his 350th episode.

From wine to whiskey: Island libations Vashon is home to a wide variety of beverage producers. With five wineries, three of which are open to the public for tastings, a distilling company that creates whiskey, gin and vodka and a beer-maker, the island is the place to enjoy a summer day imbibing in local pleasures.

WINE Palouse Winery is located on Vashon’s north end. Owners George and Linda Kirkish, whose bottles have won a slate of awards, complete the entire winemaking process on-site using Eastern Washington grapes and aging the wine in French oak barrels. The winery produces 1,000 cases of handcrafted wine a year. Tasting: Overlooking Colvos Passage, the winery is open for tastings from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday year-round and 2 to 5 p.m. Fridays during the summer months. Tastings can also be

Owner Ron Irvine has been producing cabernet sauvignon, merlot and reserve red for more than two decades, some from 100 percent islandgrown grapes. Irvine was named Best Winemaker of 2012 in the Seattle Weekly’s Best of Seattle edition. Irvine has also been gaining a following for his hard cider and his sparkling white wine. CIDER, BEER & SPIRITS With the success of wineries on Vashon, a crop of creative islanders began hand-crafting other alcoholic beverages. Get a taste of Vashon at the farmers market For the quintessential community experience, visit the Vashon Farmers Market. It’s a great place to buy fresh, organic produce, flowers and wonderful handcrafted items — from caramels to jewelry to carved wooden bowls and spoons. You’ll also find beer and wine, hot food, body products and even pet treats. Most Saturdays through the summer the market offers live music, often featuring local artists; the smell of freshbaked pastries wafts through the air and children happily run around. The market runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday, from April through December. From June through August, a mini-market — produce and ingredient vendors only — is offered on Wednesday afternoons, from 3 to 6 p.m. Until November, the Wednesday and Saturday markets are held at the Village Green in the heart of town; then the show moves indoors for the last few weeks. AJ’s Espresso
Gravy
As the island’s only drive-through coffee stand, AJ’s brews a mean cup of joe, and the baristas are always friendly. You can also pick up breakfast items, snacks, desserts and fresh-made salads and sandwiches. A landscaped patio makes the small stand pleasant for walk-up customers.
Opened in the spring of 2016, Gravy recently joined the Vashon family of eateries. Owned by Pepa Brower, an islander’s daughter, and her chef husband Dre Neeley, Gravy offers seasonal American eats with Southern and French influences, as well as barbeque on the weekends.
Green Ginger Chinese Cuisine The island’s only Chinese eatery, Green Ginger serves a vast offering of both vegetarian and meat Asian fare. The Mongolian beef is particularly good, as are the szechuan green beans, shrimp curry and almond chicken.
Bramble House Slated to open in the summer of 2016 in the house across the street from Ober Park at the north end of town, Bramble House will be Vashon’s newest restaurant. The creation of Lia Bardeen, an experienced chef who has worked in some of the world’s top restaurants, Bramble House will feature modern American fare with local libations and ingredients, as well as weekend brunch.

FESTIVAL FUN Vashon offers a varied multitude of community activities every year, but the highlights of these activities are the island’s large festivals that kick off with Spring Fling around Easter and continue though the December holidays. Read on for information about upcoming festivals. Vashon Park District’s annual Low Tide Celebration offers a chance to see the sound around Vashon and the sea life within it during one of the lowest tides of the year. This year, the 11th annual festival is scheduled for June 5 beginning at 10 a.m. at the Point Robinson lighthouse. The lowest tide of the day will be at 11:42 a.m. On July 15, 16 and 17, the island’s annual blockbuster Strawberry Festival will overtake Vashon town with a parade, live music and activities for kids. The festival celebrates the strawberry-growing heritage of the island that reached its heyday when Japanese immigrants settled here and began farms in the 1930s and 40s. See page 58 for more information. Vashon’s Fourth of July fireworks display over Quartermaster Harbor is a celebration that draws the entire community to the waterfront. An impressive fireworks display of colorful explosions that reflect in the harbor’s calm
waters late at night is sponsored every year by generous islanders. Come to the waters’ shores early to get a good seat. Ringing in the crisp, cool apple season, Vashon’s Ciderfest will take place on Oct. 1. Vashon is home to many small farms, specialty orchards and talented cider makers that provide quality product for those seeking to drink locally. From tastings and orchard tours for the adults, to cider pressing for the kids, music and entertainment, the annual event will offer something for everyone. As many holidays on Vashon are, Halloween is a lively time, and children take to the town’s streets to gather treats rain or shine. Vashon’s town core closes to traffic and creatively dressed families trick-or-treat and explore haunted houses. On the eve of the big day, the Vashon Island Coffee Roasterie displays works of local jack-o-lantern art. Scheduled for Dec. 2 and 3 this year, WinterFest’s tree-lighting ceremony and holiday season cheer draw islanders out of their homes. The celebration includes a Santa-led parade, music and other winter season favorites. Businesses in town stay open late for holiday shopping. When the days begin to get longer and the rainclouds begin to clear, Vashon’s Spring Fling kicks off with the Easter Bunny making an appearance the Saturday before Easter in Ober Park. The kid-friendly event is full of multiple egg hunts, crafts and delightful spring activities.

Join the party he third weekend of each July more than 30,000 people head to downtown Vashon to take part in the island’s annual Strawberry Festival.

The three-day affair, this year set for July 15 to 17, is a classic community celebration with parades, booths, a beer garden and activities for kids. Vashon’s festival is homegrown — it boasts performances by island musicians and locally made arts and crafts, allowing the spirit of Vashon to shine. Ths Vashon-Maury Island Chamber of Commerce sponsors the event and this year promises even more music and an expanded kids’ zone in Ober Park, complete with a youth stage, hands-on activities and several attractions and rides, including a zip line, pony rides and a giant slide. Vashon’s numerous artists, long part of the festival, will also be included in more numbers this year. Expect to find them throughout the festival grounds. The heart of the fesitval takes place along Vashon’s main highway downtown, with a variety of retailers, nonprofits and food vendors setting up shop. The focal point of the festival is the Grand Parade, which will take place Saturday
at 11 a.m. The Classic Car Parade, which also draws crowds, will take place Sunday at noon. Highlights from years past expected again this year are street dances, the Bill Burby Fun Run and abundant music. An anticipated highlight new to the festival this year is traditional Japanese dance and music to honor Vashon’s Japanese farmers, who were interned after Pearl Harbor. The weekend’s festivities begin Friday evening and run until Sunday late afternoon. For guests coming from off-island or Vashon residents hoping to leave their cars at home, there will be shuttle service from both the north-end and south-end ferry docks both Saturday and Sunday. Head to a park Ober Park, at the north edge of town, has play structures and swings, as well as woods and trails, and the library is just steps away. Other play areas include Dockton Park, with playground equipment feet from the beach, and Chautauqua Elementary School, which offers play equipment, abundant walking trails and basketball hoops under the cover of a roof — a great outdoor spot on a rainy day. Vashon Sheepdog Classic:
Trials showcase working dogs and their handlers BY SUSAN RIEMER BEACHCOMBER STAFF WRITER This June, more than 100 working dogs and 75 handlers will gather on Vashon to take part in the annual Vashon Sheepdog Classic, a four-day event that draws more people than any other herding event on the West Coast. The scene at Misty Isle Farms, the location of the June 9-12 event, will resemble pastoral England with rolling hills, sheep dotting the landscape and working dogs and their handlers at the ready to herd them. In the heart of Vashon, the event will be a traditional sheepdog trial set on a classic course. It is also a fundraiser for youth organizations on Vashon and has contributed tens of thousands of dollars since Maggi McClure launched the event in 2010. The event has grown considerably since that first

year and now includes a large fiber arts village, local food, activities for children and the centerpiece of the event — four days of dog trials. The mission of these highly trained dogs is to run

the length of the field, gather what McClure has called “willful and wise” sheep and bring them into a pen back up the field not far from the handler. Throughout, the dogs must conduct themselves in an “efficient but workmanlike manner,” an important part of the process. Last year, at least 8,500 people attended the event, and this year, McClure said she expects about 10,000. Thursday will be given over to young dogs and their handlers, while the remainder of the trials will be a competition for more seasoned dogs. Someday, she said, organizers might need to cap the number of people who come through the gates of the event, but that is not expected this year. Tickets, $10 per person for adults, with kids 10 and under admitted for free, are available at brownpapertickets.com. They will also be available at the gates, but advance purchase is recommended.
