City of Covington Mayor’s Letter Covington is young compared to our neighbors and we will be celebrating our 20th birthday (as an incorporated city) in 2017. Covington has come a long way in the past 20 years and continues to be a desirable community for residents to live in and businesses to locate. Covington serves as a retail and medical hub for residents of the city and the surrounding community. Additionally, a new retail and living development is taking shape in the north end of the city and our first hospital is already under construction in the downtown core area. The city is truly a one-stop shop for all the services the community needs. Covington is very community-oriented and focuses on bringing its residents family-friendly events throughout the year. In the summer, residents can enjoy the Covington Days Festival, Summer Concert Series, Outdoor Family Movie, KidsFest, Sausage and Cider Fest, and Play Unplugged program. Other events include special swim events like the Spooky Swim (October), and Purple Light Nights Kick Off event (October) as well as the Community Tree Lighting Event (December). In recent years, the Covington Parks and Recreation Department has expanded its recreation and athletics offerings to provide a comprehensive menu of options for residents. Youth athletics include flag football, soccer, volleyball, baseball, basketball, and t-ball. Recreational classes range from dance and gymnastics to culinary, music and safety classes. The Covington Aquatic Center is a popular regional pool and is jam packed with activities, lessons, classes, swim team, and special swim events as well. Residents also enjoy access to some great parks in the city, the most visited being Covington Community Park and Jenkins Creek Park. Covington Community Park is entering Phase 2 of construction which will add an exciting variety of elements to the already popular walking trails and fields. Jenkins Creek Park has been around much longer and recently received a half million dollar upgrade to replace bridges and improve walking trails. The city is nestled in the foothills of Mount Rainier and the Cascades, within miles of the beautiful Green River Gorge and Flaming Geyser Park. We host Minor’s Day on the 2nd Saturday of July and our Labor Day 3 day event, which also features a parade on Labor Day that actually closes Highway 169 for approximately 2 hours. Our city gym now offers Jazzercise, basketball, volleyball and Karate. Our Black Diamond Community Center offers social, recreational and emergency services for seniors, families and youth. This Center has been designated as the Red Cross Mass Disaster Center for the South King County area in case of a major emergency/ disaster in the region. Black Diamond History
BLACK DIAMOND COMMUNITY LINKS
The City of Black Diamond was incorporated in 1959, but was first established as a community in the late 1880s for the mining of coal. At the turn of the century the town was a major exporter of coal in the region. The Pacific Coast Coal Company in Black Diamond became the largest coal mining operation on the West Coast. Some historic buildings retain their original locations. The City is on the verge of growth. At 4,160 citizens, population projections may reach above 20,000 in the next 20 years. Over the past several years, major annexations have increased the population and acreage of Black Diamond. The annexation of the Lake Sawyer area in 1998 doubled the number of citizens. Recent annexations in the City’s urban growth area have increased the city’s size by approximately 1,600 acres. Unlike other communities, the city has stood firm to its vision and growth strategies as identified with the community and captured in the Comprehensive Plan. As the final pieces fall into place, Black Diamond is in the position to allow growth to occur in a well-planned, environmentally sensitive manner that protects the rural character of our community.

ARE YOU PREPARED? Being prepared can change everything. By planning ahead, you can increase the chances of survival for you and your family, not to mention gain peace of mind knowing you are in control. Catastrophes can happen at any time and are likely to happen here. Imagine you are at work, on the road, or at home during a catastrophe. How would you communicate with loved ones? Are you prepared to survive without essential services, such as running water, electricity, or phones for 7 to 10 days? 1. MAKE A PLAN ✔ Make a family emergency communication plan, identify an out-of-state contact ✔ Plan for people, pets and property ✔ Review and practice your emergency plan 2. BUILD A KT ✔ Build a kit for at least 7 to 10 days ✔ Save important documents/records on USB drives, store one at home and one in a safety deposit box ✔ Create customized kits for home, office and vehicle 3. HELP EACH OTHER ✔ Get involved – Create networks of neighbors and co-workers, work together to pool resources ✔ Participate in a training – CPR, first aid, Community Emergency Response Training (CERT) ✔ Learn how to reduce hazards (e.g. shutting off gas supply if needed, strap water heater in place, etc.) BUILD A KIT FOR AT LEAST 7 TO 10 DAYS Imagine if resources aren’t available for seven or more days. You might have to take care of
minor injuries and access to resources will likely be limited. Help your family be better prepared by gathering additional supplies and customizing the list to meet your needs. Once you have the basics, think about items you could use to help yourself and others, or simply improve your comfort. Identify a storage container or key location to place your survival kit, then gather and store supplies. Supplies include water and food as well as items for shelter and warmth, first aid, communication, personal hygiene and sanitation. It’s possible your home could be damaged and you may have to evacuate; be sure to include a backpack or similar bag so you can pack some of these items to go. Many of these supplies you may already have at home. Below are suggested basic supplies to survive for 7 to 10 days. ■ Water – one gallon per person per day for drinking and sanitation ■ Food – at least 7 to 10 day supply of non-perishable food per person ■ Cash – ATMs won’t work without electricity ■ Battery-powered radio and extra batteries ■ Flashlight and extra batteries ■ First aid kit ■ Whistle to signal for help ■ Filter mask or cotton t-shirt to help filter the air ■ Moist towelettes for sanitation ■ Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities if needed ■ Manual can opener for food ■ Shelter items like tents, tarps and rope ■ Garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation ■ Unique family needs: supplies for infants, pets and elderly, prescriptions, and important family documents Local agencies across Puget Sound are teaming up to share information and encourage residents to prepare for catastrophic events with this regional campaign, WHAT TO DO TO MAKE IT THROUGH.
