We have been through a lot together, seen “reel” change and experienced growth beyond our imagination. Our distinguished Spawnsors continue to support the festival and make it what it is. I ask that you reach out to them, give them a high fin, and most importantly, support them throughout the year. With your vote, I will continue to bring bigger and better attractions for them to spawnsor, of course while maintaining a solid and fiscally responsible budget. My campaign and this festival have not been possible without the thousands of hours of volunteer time. The tides are changing and we are on the right side of history! Don’t be fooled by the “flip-flopping” comments of my opponents. Their fishy-washy rhetoric is designed to distract you from the real issues. They’ll try and talk about immigration when we should be talking about migration. They want to talk about handing out free passes? Well guess who the only candidate is to essentially gives out 150,000 free passes each Salmon Days weekend? They talk the talk, I walk the walk. I’m the fish who listens to the people. You wanted a beer garden, more booths and food trucks and I listened. This year you will have all of that and more in a new area of the festival located at the Community Center. The state of the festival is strong. SALMON DAYS COLORING CONTEST

The coloring contest asks kids of all ages to choose from one of the Salmon Days coloring sheets, color and submit them to one of our sanctioned stores in the Meadows Shopping Center (list of shops below) no later than Saturday, October 1st. Participating stores and the Issaquah Chamber of Commerce will have the coloring sheets available to pick up, or you can print them off the Chamber and/or Salmon Days websites. www.SalmonDays.org or www.IssaquahChamber.com. Salmon Days theme a playful spin on 2016 election By Nicole Jennings | njennings@issaquahreporter.com

If Issaquah residents don’t like the candidates in November’s presidential election, there is good news — a third-party candidate has arrived on the scene and will be campaigning downtown Issaquah in the coming weeks. The popular new politician is Sammy the Salmon, who represents the “Findependent Party” in Salmon Days 2016. The Issaquah Chamber of Commerce came up with the theme of “Findependent” for Salmon Days as a way to both play off of current events and add some light-heartedness to the tense political climate in the U.S. Brian Twiggs, who is serving as the chamber’s interim festival director after the departure of former Festival Director Robin Kelley at the end of August, said that to find a theme, the chamber normally takes a hot topic in the media and puts a fishy spin on it. At first, the chamber considered a Seahawks theme, but decided that this was “too obvious,” Twiggs said. The planners of the big festival instead turned to the coming change in government. “We kept going back to the election,” Twiggs said. “Once we realized that Sammy could make a great candidate that both parties could identify with, we knew we had an idea to at least pursue further.” The logo, designed to look like a campaign ad, features the word “Findependent” in bold with a salmon wrapping itself through the letters.

Below this is the phrase, “Join the party!” The logo includes both red and blue, the respective colors of the Republican and Democratic parties, to appeal to all voters. Robin Spicer designed the logo and “nailed it with her first attempt,” according to Twiggs. Initially, the chamber had chosen “Red Fish, Blue Fish” as the catchphrase to represent both political parties, but realized that too many people would associate this with the Dr. Seuss book. Twiggs and his colleagues hope that the “Findependent” theme can be not only an great way to attract visitors to the festival, but can also bring a smile to the face of anyone discouraged with current politics. “If we could somehow be the comic relief in the middle of this unique election, we might have something that people would really gravitate towards,” he said. For the second year in a row, the city of Issaquah made a video promoting the Salmon Days theme. This year’s ad features all of the phrases commonly heard in a campaign ad, but with a healthy dose of fish and water puns. “In these stormy times, we need a candidate who can navigate the uncharted waters ahead … who will not flounder when the seas get rough,” the Findependent Party advocate in the video says before announcing, “That candidate is Sammy the Salmon.”

“Our team was very excited to ‘join the party’ and help announce the Salmon Days theme this year,” said Autumn Monahan, assistant to the city administrator, who collaborated with Communications Director Warren Kagarise and TV Coordinator Tim Smith on the video. “Videos are a great way to communicate — and Sammy the Salmon is a beloved member of our community.” This isn’t the first time that the city has used videos starring a Northwest creature to promote tourism in Issaquah; the city’s Legendary Issaquah promotional videos, starring Sasquatch, have been a huge success in bringing people to town and have even won the city two national awards. “Warren, Autumn and Tim from the city really wanted to make a video last year announcing the #soFlippinFun campaign. I was excited when they wanted to be a part of the process again,” Twiggs said. “They have video capabilities that we don’t have in-house so it makes the announcement of the theme so much more engaging and effective.” Sammy the Salmon promises to be on the campaign trail in his favorite city in the weeks leading up to Salmon Days. When heading back via shuttle, make sure you return to the same shuttle stop where you were dropped off to ensure you are taken to the correct parking location. The shuttles start running at 9am and end at 7pm both Saturday and Sunday. PLEASE NOTE: if you plan salmon a kid, family, on attending the carnival, make sure + earth-friendly event you are at the shuttle stop no later than 7pm as the carnival runs later than the shuttles.

Catch the shuttle from the Issaquah Park and Ride Transit Center, the Issaquah Highlands Park and Ride or the NEW location at Costco Corporate HQ. Our eco-friendly, biodiesel buses arrive every 10-15 minutes to whisk you to one of two drop-off locations for the festival at Front Street North and Northeast Dogwood Street. Celebrating 47 Years! and large ohfishal spawnsors came onboard in the ‘80s. • In 1990, the festival introduced the Salmon Days Limited Edition Print, a signed and numbered run of 450 prints featuring original artwork. The festival retired the collection at the end of 2003 and the majority of the past prints have sold out.

• In 1970, the Issaquah Chamber of Commerce presented the first Salmon Days Festival. • The event grew out of the desire to replace the once popular Labor Day celebration, as well as a need to celebrate one of Issaquah’s greatest treasures – the annual return of the salmon. • In the beginning, festival attractions included the Kiwanis Salmon BBQ, salmon hatchery displays, an art show, children’s parade led by the late J.P. Patches, Little League football games at Veterans’ Memorial Field, fire crew competitions and more. • In 1980, the Salmon Days Festival and Grande Parade underwent two major changes that have been credited with altering the course of the festival: Salmon Days became a Seafair-sanctioned event and a festival float was created again. • To aid in the growth process, merchandise was introduced, the first paid festival director was hired

Today, Salmon Days is still presented by the Greater Issaquah Chamber of Commerce with the goal of providing a community celebration focused on honoring the miraculous return of the salmon. The Kiwanis are still barbecuing salmon, almost two tons each year. The Grande Parade features more than 100 entries annually. Veterans’ Memorial Field is transformed into the Field of Fun and hosts free games and activities for families to enjoy. What began as an art show has manifested itself into a marketplace of more than 270 onsite artists selling their handcrafted pieces to an audience of more than 180,000.
