Have you seen the Back-to-School aisles and specials in our local stores and various media advertising? These displays are a sure signal that school “starts” again for the new school year. Wait…what? In reality, school never sleeps in the Sequim School District, and my own experiences, as well as those of many others, tell a very different story. We heard the staff and community tell us that increasing student achievement and prioritizing student learning needed to be the primary priority for our efforts, so staff has been very busy extending learning opportunities for students throughout the summer. Not only did our staff operate the Extended School Year program for the IEP students who qualiﬁed, Sequim High School offered an independent summer credit retrieval program for students needing additional options to stay on track for graduation. Whether a high school student was a senior hoping to graduate on time, or a freshman who struggled with that very different ﬁrst year of high school, all students in grades nine through twelve were given the opportunity to take summer credit classes in required subjects like math, physical education, English, and U.S. History. The Sequim High School Library was the host for a physical Enjoy the rest of the summer — Classes for most students start summer school in July for students who preferred human assistance, while a larger number of youth accessed APEX classes online. Welcome to the 2016-17 School Year and all the opportunities that lie ahead for students to experience success in our school district! I have watched our support service team’s diligent efforts throughout the summer months to ready things for the return of our students. We are pleased to offer you this copy of Kids Today, our guide for Back to School information for our families. This document includes activities and events of the district, as well as quick reference for some essential information and annual notiﬁcations. Please take a few moments to read through the information presented in this booklet. Additional information and updates are available on the District website at www.sequim.k12.wa.us. It is that time again to begin a new chapter for students, staff, and our Sequim community. I look forward to meeting you at the Back to School Fair, Open House, and the host of other events organized for the acclimation of our students to the new school year.

Welcome to the Sequim School District Volunteer Program! The district recognizes the valuable contribution made to the total school program through the volunteer assistance of parents and community members. Last year, we had over 900 registered volunteers in our schools. To volunteer in the Sequim School District, you must first complete the volunteer clearance process and background check. This process must be repeated each school year. The 2016-17 Volunteer Registration all online application program will be available beginning August 18 on the district website at www.sequim.k12.wa.us. Our new application process is done entirely online now for maximum efficiency. The beginning of the new school year is an excellent time to start an application online so you can be ready to volunteer in the schools or chaperone a field trip. The online application process requires an e-mail address and provides step-by-step assistance. You will need to scan and submit a copy of your current Washington State driver’s license or state ID card to the district office. Allow for at least two weeks processing time before the date you wish to begin volunteering. After you have completed the online application and submitted your driver’s license, you will receive notification by e-mail when clearance has been completed. Visit the computer kiosk at your child’s school building or the district office during office hours or, for your convenience, complete the application process from your home computer. breakfast and lunch for our students, as well as important educational programs for our elementary students. And for middle school students? Carol Harms taught a pilot summer school math class for eligible middle school students during the first two weeks of August. The importance of this class heralds the end of social promotion in middle school. Next year, students who fail a class in sixth, seventh, or eighth grade will need to complete summer school work to remediate the content loss signaled by that non-passing grade. Students who don’t complete the summer school remediation will need to complete that work during elective time the following year. We are so thankful to our insightful freshmen, who surfaced the need for a summer session, and the end to the unintended ripples that face students in high school when there are no systems in place to ensure that middle school students focus time and attention on the work of learning. This all said, let me be clear about two other things. Were it not for the hard summer work of our custodial and maintenance crew, augmented by staff from the ranks of bus drivers and para-educators, the beginning of the 2016-17 school year would be a dismal prospect. I personally witnessed the amazing efforts of the people working diligently to wax floors, pressure-wash buildings, paint, and complete other building and grounds tasks that cannot be done when students are in our buildings. In addition, we often overlook the yeoman efforts of the business office and district office folks who make sure we all get paid and hire the staff necessary to complete our 2016-17 work, so take a minute to thank the folks who keep the district operating while some of us rest and vacation.

The fourth annual Back to School Fair, offering resources for families with children from birth to 18 years old, is Saturday, August 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Boys & Girls Club at 400 W. Fir St. in Sequim. Back packs and school supplies will be available to families in need. Services include immunizations, haircuts, and vision checks for children. Activities for kids include a fun photo booth and more. There will be books for children, free food and other giveaways. Interactive exhibits include a ﬁre truck, school bus and a police car. Information on Sequim schools, riding the school bus and school bus routes, free/reduced price school lunch program applications, local preschools and other early learning programs, immunizations, how to obtain a library card, dental hygiene for kids and more will be available. High School Graduation Requirements Policy 2410 - Sequim High School Students currently need to obtain 22 credits accumulated grades 9-12 in order to graduate. Beginning with the Class of 2019, new state minimum graduation requirements were implemented raising the requirement to 24 credits. Each student shall complete an Educational Plan for what they expect to do the year following graduation. In addition, all students are required to pass High School End of Course Exams in English/Language Arts, Math and Biology.

Illness - When your child returns to school after an illness, a phone call or a note signed by a parent or guardian must accompany him/her to excuse the child’s absence. An incident which you feel is harassment, intimidation and/or bullying should be reported to the supervisor or building administrator or the superintendent. A form to report Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying can be found on our website under Policies-Procedures, Prohibition of Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying. Sequim School District Prohibits Sexual Harassment. Sexual Harassment is a form of discrimination prohibited by Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Discipline/Exceptional Misconduct Policy 3240 - The District will use a progressive disciplinary policy, relying on lesser forms of disciplinary action becoming more severe with repeated violations, except for those items which have been identified as exceptional misconduct, which will be subject to more serious disciplinary action due to the seriousness of the offense as defined in Policy and Procedure 3240, Student Conduct Expectations and Reasonable Sanctions. All students receive a copy of this publication at the beginning of each school year. Releasing Student Records/Information/“directory information” Policy 3231 - Certain information is defined by the federal Family Rights and Privacy Act as “directory information.” The law states we may disclose “directory information” about your child unless you request, in writing, that such information not be released. Directory information is defined as the student’s name, photograph, address, telephone number, date and place of birth, dates of attendance, participation in officially recognized activities and sports, weight and height of members of athletic teams, diplomas and awards received, and the most recent previous school attended. In most cases, requests for this type of information come from the news media for pictures to accompany feature stories. We will not release any “directory information” for commercial purposes or for other purposes not required by law or not related to school business. Occasionally, photographs may be taken of students for use in the news media or in District produced publications. If you do not want your child to appear in a photograph, videotape, film or slide, please let your child’s school know in writing. In accordance with RCW 28A.225.330, we are authorized to forward student records to schools in another district to which a student has transferred or to colleges or educational institutions to which a student is applying.

Food Service

The Sequim School District recognizes the School Food Service Program as an integral part of the school day. Sequim Schools offer an approved lunch and breakfast program. This program provides for nutritious, balanced hot meals daily at all levels. The meals are nutritionally balanced with lunch meeting one-third the recommended daily nutrition requirement. Free and reduced-price meals are available to students whose families meet certain federal income requirements. Check with your local school for income guidelines and application forms. Complaints and Grievances Concerning Staff and Programs Policy 4220 - The board desires that the district be informed of the criticisms and complaints that parents, guardians, or community members may have regarding its staff, programs, and operations. At the same time, the board has confidence in its staff and programs and shall act to protect them from unwarranted criticism or disruptive interference. Concerns received by the board or a board member are referred to the superintendent for investigation and action. Forms to begin the process may be obtained at school building offices. No Tobacco Policy 4251 - Smoking or any other use of tobacco products or nicotine delivery devices shall be prohibited on school district property. This shall include all district buildings, grounds, and district-owned vehicles. Budget Policy 6000 - Each year in August, the Sequim School District Board of Directors adopts a budget detailing how the district will spend its monies for the next fiscal year. Before the budget is adopted, a public hearing is held. Visit the District website at www.sequim.k12.wa.us for a current copy of the budget. Pesticide Policy 6895 - The district complies with the requirements of law regarding pesticide notification, posting and record keeping. Parents, please notify the District in writing if you would like to be notified of any District pesticide use at your child’s school building. Transportation Services Transportation is provided for students who reside more than one mile from school and for all students grades K-5 under one mile. One bus run will be operated in the AM and one in the PM with a mid-day Kindergarten run. Schedules will be posted on the district website, at the schools, and printed in the local newspaper in advance of school beginning. The first week schedules and bus stops may be adjusted slightly as bus routes are fine-tuned with respect to times and students rider numbers. General Guidelines - If your student rides a school bus, parents are asked to review general bus rules with their students. Those rules and regulations are distributed the first week of school by your bus driver and need to be signed are returned to the driver. Children Walking to School - Parents plan a Safe Route to School with your child. Caution them to choose intersections for crossing that are regulated by stop-and-go signals, traffic signs, or intersections that are designated with school crossing signs with good visibility in good directions. SUMMER WORK – Did you know?

Summer is one of the busiest times of year for the Technology Department, and this year is no different. The school-wide tiling project at Helen Haller Elementary created an opportunity to improve student computer access with a designated permanently mounted computer area in each classroom. Students will now have better access to computers in their classrooms with more elbow room in which to work. Significant upgrades in network infrastructure occurred this summer with the upgrade of core server equipment. These improvements establish a new level of performance that will ensure a consistent and reliable experience for both students and staff. Additionally, the district is upgrading its fiber connectivity at Greywolf Elementary, Olympic Peninsula Academy and Sequim High School. The fiber upgrade is partially funded by E-Rate, a federal program targeted at improving connectivity and infrastructure in our country. This work supports our district’s vision for development of a robust technology Infrastructure. Each year, Sequim School District welcomes new staff, and that means movement within buildings and setting up new computers; it is also the time of year when computer maintenance and updating are performed on all district computers. This includes battery and hard drive replacement, additional memory installation and new wiring. All 2,000 + computers are given a refresh during the summer. It’s a big job to prepare for the first day of school, and a top priority for the Technology Department is to have all equipment ready and up-to-date for when students return.

The new template now automatically adapts to the device you are using, be it cell phone, tablet or computer. We hope this new template makes our information more accessible and user-friendly. 2016-17 Sequim School District Bus Routes Sequim School District reserves the right to change bus routes and times as needed. Students in grades K-12 ride on buses together. Please check your student’s bus route and pick-up time listed below, as some routes have changed since last year. First day of school: The Transportation Department strongly encourages all students who intend to ride the bus do so on the morning of the first day of school (August 31, 2016). This will enable parents, students and bus drivers to become familiar with the bus stop routine. Students who plan to ride the bus need to be at their stop five minutes ahead of pick-up time. Times and pick-up points listed below are approximations until exact enrollment and passenger loads are fixed. Please remember, if a bus passes waiting students, it may not be their bus. For the first day, new students will be picked up at all stops along routes, except for Hwy 101 East and West routes. The following are routes, not necessarily bus stops. Students will be advised after two or three days where the permanent bus stop will be. Every effort will be made to space stops approximately one-half mile apart, thus requiring a quarter-mile walk along routes. Exceptions will be made only on a case-by case basis due to special circumstances such as student safety or handicapping conditions. Safety reminder for Hwy 101 West & East students: All students living on Hwy 101 West or East must catch the bus at their designated stop. Do not cross the highway to catch the bus at a later time. Reminder for A.M. Greywolf Elementary students: Greywolf Elementary students are transferred to a shuttle bus in the Fir Street stadium parking lot. Kindergarten Bus Drop-off Requirements: Bus drivers will not drop Kindergarten students at stops unless a parent or other designated adult is there to meet the child. If there is no adult at the stop, the child will be brought back to the transportation center. Parents, for younger elementary students on regular bus runs, please have someone at the stop to meet the students, particularly on Hwy 101 East and West. Students will ride the same route bus in the A.M. and the P.M. unless otherwise noted. Students who wish to get off at a stop other than their own, or who wish to ride a bus other than their own must have an official bus pass issued by the school office. Help kids get to school and home safely

An adult’s flash of impatience behind the wheel or a child’s panicked sprint to catch up with a departing school bus can turn a single moment into a terrible nightmare. This fall, as the children get back to school it’s important that drivers and children remember that getting to school and home safely is everybody’s business.

If your children take the bus, make sure they know these five simple rules: arrive at your school bus stop five minutes before its scheduled stop; wait for the bus a safe distance away from the side of the street; stay back from the bus until it comes to a complete stop; if it’s dark, wear retro-reflective material and stay visible to drivers; and if you miss your bus or if it never arrives, go straight back home. For those who walk or ride a bicycle to school, help them choose the safest and most direct route. If there are no sidewalks, Drive slowly in school zones; kids can dart out into the street faster than you can blink an eye.

Teach them to cross streets only at crosswalks and to always check for cars to the left first, then right, then left again. In the car, respect school bus traffic laws, which means coming to a full stop, from both directions, until the bus’s red lights stop flashing. Keep an eye out for children crossing the street, especially during hours when the school day starts and ends. Slow down in school zones, and be watchful for children running to catch the school bus.
