Black Diamond History The City of Black Diamond was incorporated in 1959, but was first established as a community in the late 1880s for the mining of coal. At the turn of the century the town was a major exporter of coal in the region. The Pacific Coast Coal Company in Black Diamond became the largest coal mining operation on the West Coast. Some historic buildings retain their original locations. A rich history surrounds the City of Black Diamond from the famous Black Diamond Bakery to the Black Diamond Museum of History. Black Diamond offers a warm and friendly rural, small town atmosphere with spectacular mountain views. The city is nestled in the foothills within miles of the beautiful Green River Gorge and Flaming Geyser Park. The City is on the verge of growth. At 4,160 citizens, population projections may reach above 20,000 in the next 20 years. Over the past several years, major annexations have increased the population and acreage of Black Diamond. The annexation of the Lake Sawyer area in 1998 doubled the number of citizens. Recent annexations in the City’s urban growth area have increased the city’s size by approximately 1,600 acres. Unlike other communities, the city has stood firm to its vision and growth strategies as identified with the community and captured in the Comprehensive Plan. As the final pieces fall into place, Black Diamond is in the position to allow growth to occur in a well-planned, environmentally sensitive manner that protects the rural character of our community. Our city gym now offers Jazzercise, basketball, volleyball and Karate. Our Black Diamond Community Center offers social, recreational and emergency services for seniors, families and youth. This Center has been designated as the Red Cross Mass Disaster Center for the South King County area in case of a major emergency/disaster in the region. BUILD A KIT FOR AT LEAST 7 TO 10 DAYS Imagine if resources aren’t available for seven or more days. You might have to take care of minor injuries and access to resources will likely be limited. Help your family be better prepared by gathering additional supplies and customizing the list to meet your needs. Once you have the basics, think about items you could use to help yourself and others, or simply improve your comfort. Identify a storage container or key location to place your survival kit, then gather and store supplies. Supplies include water and food as well as items for shelter and warmth, first aid, communication, personal hygiene and sanitation. It’s possible your home could be damaged and you may have to evacuate; be sure to include a backpack or similar bag so you can pack some of these items to go. Many of these supplies you may already have at home. Below are suggested basic supplies to survive for 7 to 10 days. ■ Water – one gallon per person per day for drinking and sanitation ■ Food – at least 7 to 10 day supply of non-perishable food per person ■ Cash – ATMs won’t work without electricity ■ Battery-powered radio and extra batteries ■ Flashlight and extra batteries ■ First aid kit ■ Whistle to signal for help ■ Filter mask or cotton t-shirt to help filter the air ■ Moist towelettes for sanitation ■ Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities if needed ■ Manual can opener for food ■ Shelter items like tents, tarps and rope ■ Garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation ■ Unique family needs: supplies for infants, pets and elderly, prescriptions, and important family documents Local agencies across Puget Sound are teaming up to share information and encourage residents to prepare for catastrophic events with this regional campaign, WHAT TO DO TO MAKE IT THROUGH. Ravensdale Ravensdale was originally called Leary, after the name of Leary Coal Company, in turn named for John Leary, a Seattle coal speculator. The later name came from the flocks of ravens that fed on grain spilled from the boxcars on the Northern Pacific Railroad tracks that ran through the town. Underground coal mining commenced around 1899 by the Seattle and San Francisco Railway and Navigation Company, although coal had been mined in nearby Danville and Landsburg a few years earlier. The coal mines were later acquired by Northwest Improvement Company (NWI), a subsidiary of Northern Pacific. In 1907, Ravensdale, Washington was a coal mining town with a population of about 1,000 residents, most of whom worked for the mining company. Ravensdale was officially incorporated on August 15, 1913. On November 16, 1915 at 1:25 p.m. an explosion occurred at the mine
killing thirty-one men, one of the worst coal mining accidents in Washington state history. The NWI mine was closed permanently and many of the immigrant miners left town seeking work elsewhere. A number of coal miners from Ravensdale moved to Ray, Arizona to mine copper. Over the decades coal mining continued to fuel Ravensdale’s economy as new mines were developed operating on the Danville, Landsburg, and McKay coal seams. The Dale Coal Company became one of the more successful from about 1924-1941, followed by the Continental Coal Company from 1942– 1944, the Anderson Coal Company from 1943–1948; and Palmer Coking Coal Company from 1937-1975. On January 29, 1955 four miners were lost in the Landsburg mine when a cave-in filled the mine with water, mud and debris. On December 17, 1975 at 2:30 p.m., the Rogers No. 3 mine was dynamited shut by Palmer Coking Coal Company. This was the last underground coal mine in the state of Washington.
