Arlington takes center stage for 4th, Fly-In Dear friends, As mayor, I would like to personally invite you to join me in celebrating the Fourth of July in one of America’s Best Communities – Arlington! Our July 4 grand celebration is the kickoff to many more great summer events that provide a variety of entertainment for all ages. The list of activities during the Fourth is immense. This year is no different and will feature some new events to accompany our many traditional favorites. It always amazes me how many volunteers and community groups spend our nation’s birthday hosting the events! Start your day off with

the Pedal, Paddle, Puff Triathlon and the Pancake Breakfast by The 12th Man Grill with proceeds benefitting Youth Dynamics. The fun continues with

the Kiwanis Auction, the new Stilly Beer and Wine Garden and food concessions, the Old Fashioned Kids’ Carnival, the Grand Parade; Kiddies Parade, the Duck Dash and ending with the fireworks display. This is one of my favorite days in Arlington; it is a great day to visit with friends old and new, discovering what makes Arlington such a special place and one of America’s Best Communities. The party doesn’t stop because after the Fourth of July the high-flying fun and entertainment of the Arlington Fly In begins on Thursday, July 7, and continues through Saturday, July 9. The world’s fin-

est aerobatic performers, and Paul Allen’s Flying Heritage Collection will be on hand, along with daily air shows. The annual downtown Street Fair is always a guaranteed winner with lots of great vendors and entertainment from Friday, July 8, through Sunday, July 10. New vendor means breakfast won’t be only meal

ARLINGTON – For years, the Arlington Heights Fire Department has put on the Arlington 4th of July Pancake Breakfast. This year, it decided to stop doing it, and focus on smaller, more intimate local events. That left a big hole. Organizers asked various service organizations if they would like to do it. To no avail. But fairly recently the local Arlington Runners Club convinced the 12th Man Grill food truck to do the job. That business agreed to do it, but also wanted to be available to serve lunch and dinner, too. And, it also was requested that a beer garden be part of the deal. So the City Council recently agreed to that. So, instead of the event losing a breakfast, it gained a lot more, Bob Nelson of Kiwanis said. Youth Dynamics, which helps local youths, will provide workers for the breakfast.

“Proceeds will go back into the community,” said Jessica Ronhaar of Youth Dynamics. Breakfast will consist of pancakes, sausage, eggs and coffee or orange juice. Organizers hope to keep the cost about $5 a plate. “We wanted to continue the tradition of the breakfast,” she said. Another goal was to have the event all day. “There was a big lull,” from after breakfast until the parade, she said. The beer garden will run July 3 from 4-8 p.m. and from noon to 9 p.m. July 4. Nelson said the fire district dropping out of the 4th pancake breakfast left all the organizers wondering what they should do. He said 12th Man Grill food truck saved the day by coming in and agreeing not only to do breakfast but also lunch and dinner. “We tried a lot of food trucks,” he said. “It left us scrambling.”

Pedal, Paddle and Puff Triathlon draws variety of teams, individuals ARLINGTON — Participants can test their endurance on sea and land in the upcoming Pedal, Paddle and Puff triathlon at Haller Park July 4. “I love putting on this race because there are no other athletic events like it,” coordinator Devin Brossard said. “Each year it gets better.” The 5K challenges triathletes to race by bicycle, canoe and a run starting at Haller Park with the race happening along the Stillaguamish River. “Like many aspects of the 4th of July in Arlington, the race becomes a yearly tradition for many families,” Brossard said. “It’s a lot of fun.” Brossard has been a part of the event for three years and is anticipating 100 people to show up. “There’s a real sense

Carnival adds to fun of ‘Old-Fashioned Fourth’ The “Old-Fashioned Fourth” will not only return to downtown Arlington on Monday, July 4, but it will also overlap with the final day of the Smokey Point Carnival. Jennifer Holocker, executive director of the Arlington-Smokey Point Chamber of Commerce, explained that the carnival is slated for the Thursday-through-Sunday weekend of June 23-26, followed by the Friday-through-Monday weekend of July 1-4. The carnival will again set up shop at the corner of 172nd Street and Airport Way. Tickets are on sale for $20. Ticket sale locations include the Grocery Outlet, the Chamber Visitor Information Center in Legion Park and the State Farm offices in Smokey Point. Each ticket is an all-day ride wristband, for any day the carnival is open. For the Old-Fashioned Fourth, the chamber routinely brings in close to half-a-dozen food vendors, to serve the public during a day when all of the restaurants and other businesses along Olympic Avenue are closed. Kettle Korn, snow cones, ice cream, hot dogs, pizza and other carnival food are frequently featured, along with face-painting, a wading pool for making giant soap bubbles and an assortment of games. Legion Park will host the “Kids Carnival” from noon to 4 p.m. July 4, which should give those in the Kiddies Parade enough time to get started at 4:30 p.m. Chamber members will be selling Fourth of Julythemed items at the gazebo, where they’ll also be selling tickets for the bouncy house and pony rides. A rock climbing wall will also be available.

ARLINGTON – An oldfashioned, full-sized grandfather clock valued at $4,000 will be just one of the items available at the annual Arlington Kiwanis 4th of July Auction. “We’ll see what we can get for it,” Bob Nelson of the Kiwanis said. Proceeds go for local scholarships. Nelson said there will be just one silent auction this year, at 9 a.m. at Haller Park. The live auction will start at 10:30 a.m. He said last year the early auction was not well attended, but the later one was, so they decided to split the difference. They raised enough from the auctions last year to present four $3,000 scholarships to local students. Previously $2,000 scholarships were given out. Other items that will be auctioned off include a trip to a Palm Springs condominium for a week and a Stay-and-Play at Angels of the Winds casino. Corporate sponsorships also help the cause.

Kids show their independence in their own parade The boys and girls of Arlington will have yet another opportunity to upstage their elders this Fourth of July. The Cascade Valley Hospital and Clinics will present the annual Independence Day Kiddies Parade for Arlington on Monday, July 4, which gives kids 12 years and younger the chance to wave to cheering crowds along Olympic Avenue for free. Kiddies Parades in years past have attracted more than 100 young entrants each. Although Jennifer Egger of Cascade Valley Hospital is still involved in coordinating both the Kiddies and

Variety of entries makes for a grand 4th parade Marching bands, football teams and dance squads have all participated in Arlington’s Fourth of July Grand Parade in years past. Event organizers expect this year’s Independence Day Grand Parade should offer much of the same eclectic collection of entrants, who are scheduled to begin their jaunt down Olympic Avenue beginning at 5 p.m. on Monday, July 4. Cascade Valley Hospital has taken the lead in putting together both parades, and is excited that this year’s Grand Parade will again feature some of the event’s most reliable attendees. The Mission Pipe Band originally formed in 1962 as a Royal Canadian Legion band. Its connection with Arlington goes back to 1987, when it participated in its first Fourth of July parade on Olympic Avenue. “It hasn’t missed an event since,” said Jennifer Egger of Cascade Valley Hospital, as she looked forward to welcoming the band back for its 29th year in the parade. As for the more than 100 other entrants that each year’s Grand Parade usually attracts, Egger believes that the more-creative entrants are the more strongly and fondly they’re remembered. “The crowd loves a show,” Egger

said. “They really appreciate all the entries, but for the Fourth of July in Arlington, more is definitely more,” she laughed. Logan noted that the small-town feel for which Arlington is praised by a number of residents and visitors alike is balanced by the diversity of participants and attendees that events such as its Fourth of July parades attract. “You see a good mix of old friends and new faces at the Grand Parade,” Egger said. “It’s always great fun.” Registration for the Grand Parade runs from 2:30-4:30 p.m. at the Public Utility District building at 210 Division St. Entrants cannot participate if they aren’t registered by 4:30 p.m. As many as 50 volunteers are anticipated to be on site to coordinate registration, judge entrants and supervise the order in which participants will make their procession through Arlington. Egger also recommends that prospective entrants call her at 360-618-7848 or stop by the reception desk at the hospital to register. An entry fee of $100 will be charged for participation by any political entry or person running for office in the upcoming election, while a $25 fee will be charged for all commercial entries. All other entrants may register for free.

Rubber ducky you’re the one that could win a prize ARLINGTON — The Great Stilly Duck Dash returns to Arlington to celebrate its 28th anniversary July 4. “It’s been a lot of work selling tickets, but it’s rewarding to see all the community improvements,” coordinator Dave Duskin said referring to the Rotary Club’s newest project. Such improvements have included the addition of a playground at Haller Park and expansion of the local Boys and Girls Club. “The playground at Haller Park was a crown jewel,” Duskin said. “When the splash park gets done, it will even get better.” The rubber duck race will start at 7:30 p.m. at the Stillaguamish River and end at Haller Bridge. The first duck with the entry ticket to cross the bridge wins $5,000, and five second-place winners win $1,000. The proceeds will go to the splash pad at Haller Park and also other organizations it supports this year. Tickets will be sold around town by any Arlington Rotarian $5 each or five for $20. Duskin hopes the many surrounding events will draw in people for ticket sales, such as the Stilly Beer and Wine Garden put on by the Arlington Runner’s Club and the nearby carnival.

Arlington hosts closest fireworks show around

ARLINGTON – This city hosts the only local public fireworks display, starting at about 9 p.m. July 4. The event takes place at Quake Field near the Arlington Boys and Girls Club, west of the Arlington Airport. The Rotary Club of Arlington is again putting on the event this year on Monday, July 4. Club member Paul Ellis said Rotary pays for the hourlong event from proceeds raised from the Duck Dash, along with some hotelmotel tax money as well. Enterprise Fireworks Inc. is again putting on the show. Ellis said the best places to watch the show are at either side of the club. He said traffic can get heavy at the club so his advice is to “come early.” He added the parking lot at Evans Field on the north end is also a good location.

Barbara Tolbert, executive director of the Fly-In, reported that the popular air show has been rescheduled from the middle of the day to the evening from 7-9 p.m. on Friday, July 8. “While we have scores of folks who come from across the country and spend all three days at the Fly-In, we wanted to do something for our local residents as well,” Tolbert said. “This allows them to get off work for the week, enjoy some dinner and take in a spectacular show.” This required the rescheduling of the vintage and military vehicle procession to 5:30-7 that afternoon, which was also done to serve those who usually missed it. “Kids Day” is again slated for the Fly-In’s opening day on Thursday, with activities starting at 9 a.m. and including flight simulators and law enforcement K-9 demonstrations, the latter to help raise funds for “Pennies For Puppies.” As in previous years, the Arlington Airport’s 25-foot outdoor movie screen will play family rated movies all three days, starting at dusk around 10 p.m. on July 7 with “Minions,” followed by “The Martian” on July 8 and “Interstellar” on July 9, at roughly the same times. “We don’t always have aerospace movies every year, but we have at least two space exploration movies this year,” Tolbert said. Among the event’s other changes, Tolbert noted that the military history area has expanded and moved closer to the main entrance gate. It will include displays and exhibits from the Puget Sound Military Collector Clubs, the National Guard and the Army Reserve 364th Expeditionary Sustainment Command in Marysville. The Paul Allen Flying Heritage Collection is also growing its footprint at the Fly-In this year, with some fully restored and authentic World War II Hellcats and Japanese Zeros. “These planes are incredibly rare,”

Tolbert said. More tentatively, Tolbert encouraged prospective attendees to check the FlyIn’s website at www.arlingtonflyin.org for word on when the “Hot Air Balloon Night Glow” will take place. “We’re shooting for either Friday or Saturday at dusk, but we’re also at the mercy of the weather,” Tolbert said, adding that even a 12-knot wind would be too much. Tolbert thanked Whiskey Ridge Brewing for partnering with the Fly-In to furnish it with a beer garden this year.

Arlington Street Fair offers something for everyone

Live music, food, handmade goods and family activities can all be found at the 26th annual Arlington Street Fair, set for the weekend of July 8-10 in downtown Arlington. Kathleen Shalan of the Country Rose and Bella Bungalow on Olympic Avenue is chairing the event for the third time. “It gets bigger and better every year,” said Shalan, who noted that vendors can sign up until Friday, July 1. “After that, we have to start laying the street out.” Shalan anticipates the Street Fair will draw more than 120 vendors from throughout Puget Sound and beyond. Although she acknowledged that most are coming from Snohomish and Skagit counties, at least one is making the trek from Montana. “Mostly, though, it’s just an opportunity for local folks, who normally don’t get this type of exposure, to market their wares, whether they’re vintage furniture, handmade décor or jewelry,” said Shalan, who added that many of the vendors will also have children’s activities at their booths. The Arlington Farmer’s

Market also will have its tents and booths set up on Olympic Avenue that Saturday, July 9, so those attending the Street Fair will have an additional group of local artists, farmers, beekeepers, florists and more who will provide local products to browse. Live bands will be playing in Legion Park, from the OldTime Fiddlers at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 8, to the Voices of the Village at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 10. In between, the musical selection will include rock, blues and easy listening. Legion Park will also host Last Leaf Productions’ performance of William Shakespeare’s “Henry V” from 1-2 p.m. July 9. Shalan also promised that familiar favorites would return, from face-painting to food vendors offering barbecue, hot dogs, corn dogs, elephant ears and burgers. A shuttle to and from the Arlington Fly-In at the Arlington Municipal Airport will be provided free of charge.
