Two representatives from the sheriff ’s office will hold a public meeting on Vashon Wednesday night with the goal of increasing communication and building relationships with islanders. Captain Ted Boe, the operations captain for the King County Sheriff ’s Office Precinct 4, which includes Vashon, and Sgt. Jeff Cunningham, Vashon’s liaison to the office, will lead the meeting. The focus will be on general operations and current crime statistics on the island, officer conduct and the complaint investigation process, and citizen rights when interacting with the police. There will also be time for a general question-and-answer session, Boe said, noting the meeting is also intended to be a time for community members to speak up about what kind of policing they would like on the island. “We are interested in having an open dialogue,” he added. The idea of a community meeting came up recently when an islander reached out to him on behalf of residents who had questions and concerns about policing on Vashon, Boe said. He and Cunningham came out to the island, met with the group and determined a community meeting would be a good idea — one they hope to repeat on a quarterly basis. “It was really apparent that there is information sharing that we are failing at. This seemed like an opportunity to address that,” he said. In addition to Vashon, Precinct 4 includes Skyway, White Center, Kent, Boulevard Park and Federal Way. In some of those communities, Boe noted, there are storefront police stations and community service officers, who serve as liaisons between various community groups and the sheriff ’s office, but Vashon does not have those same kind of networks, making communication more difficult. n its current special exhibit, the Heritage Museum is showcasing the craft of former islander Marshall Sohl, who told the history of Vashon and its people by rendering it meticulously through wood burning and painting.
Called “Marshall Sohl: You Cross over the Frame into Knowledge,” the show features more than 20 large wooden storyboards and approximately 40 paddles that Sohl created from the 1970s until his death in 2002, along with several personal possessions and photos. Many islanders remember Sohl, who frequently rode Vashon buses and cut a striking image in town with his long flowing white beard and hair, duct-taped shoes and a stuffed duffel bag — both on display as part of the show. Island historian Bruce Haulman and videographer Peter Ray curated the Susan Riemer / Staff Photo exhibit; it was Haulman’s idea, and Ray, At the Heritage Museum, Peter Ray, one of the two curators of the speical exhibit, examines the long intrigued with Sohl and his work, was quick to say he would assist when

Beloved clinic doctor, a man of varied talents By ANNELI FOGT Editor
Decades of practicing as a family medicine physician at Vashon’s largest medical clinic have allowed Michael Kappelman the chance to do a little bit of everything, from delivering babies to treating traumatic injuries and dealing with the ailments that come with old-age. Beloved by his patients, Kappelman’s last day as a doctor on Vashon was Monday, Jan. 4. “He’s definitely just a good guy. He’s a hard worker,” Bob Youmans, who has been a patient of Kappelman’s since the beginning, said. “He took (his work) very seriously, and he was always such a joy for us. It’s hard to see him go.” Islander and Columbia University Professor Emeritus of Clinical Medicine Yale Enson said that he has been seeing Kappelman for six years and has always been impressed with how the doctor handles his patient load. “I wish I would have trained him because I would be so proud,” Enson said. “He’s so empathetic, and he’s a healer. ” Longtime colleague and fellow clinic doctor Gary Koch hired Kappelman in 1983 and then worked with him for Kappelman’s nearly 33 years at the clinic. He said that Kappelman was fastidious and set the bar high.
“He set the standard to which all physicians should be measured,” Koch said. “I’m not just talking about on the island. I’m talking about everywhere. He’s that good. There is nobody more dedicated or thorough, and we all attempted to meet that standard.” Koch said he and Kappelman went to the same medical school at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, but didn’t know each other before working together on Vashon. “He lived here (at the clinic) because he was so dedicated and wanted to get everything done,” Koch said. “He would be here all hours, and if I’d be here, I’d walk down the hall and ask him a question. We kind of thought alike. We’re going to miss him, no question.” The doctor who has become so loved in the community says he will definitely miss the clinic, but will stay on the island and may even take on some part-time fill-ins at the clinic. But, Kappelman says he has no shortage of hobbies to occupy his time. More than 50 volunteers last year helped the Vashon Friends of the Library put on its fundraising events, a huge improvement over the seven members that sat around the organization’s meeting table a couple years ago. Now, the organization is hoping to continue the growth by bringing in more young volunteers. Vashon Friends of the Library President Deborah Anderson said this week that she credits the new blood on the volunteer force that came in early 2014 for reinvigorating the organization. A host of islanders expressed interest in volunteering with the organization after a Beachcomber article in January 2014 reported the nonprofit had been seeing the number of volunteers decrease while the age increased. “We were a sleepy little organization and everyone was getting burned out and had been doing it for a mil-
lion years,” Anderson said this week. “Then in 2014, we had this huge reinvigoration, and now we want to kick it up a notch again.” The organization also had been operating without a 501c(3) status since the 1990s. That too was reinstated in 2014. With a new board and multiple successful fundraisers in 2015, including a film night at the Vashon Theatre, a giant book sale and a “Tea for Book Lovers and Book Clubs” event, Anderson said she is hoping for a large turnout at the nonprofit’s 10 a.m. meeting Saturday, Jan. 23. “We’re hoping to reinvigorate and turn our roster of members into boots on the ground,” she said. “The sky is the limit.” The meeting will discuss plans and ideas for the year’s fundraisers as well as start the search for a new president and vice-president. “If people are interested in literacy, we’re the place to come,” Anderson said. She also said friends’ members pride themselves
on the ability to host successful fundraisers that are non-alcoholic, and the organization plans to continue in that direction. “We’re non-alcoholic to go with VARSA’s (Vashon Alliance to Reduce Substance Abuse) mission and the community saying that, ‘We don’t need liquor to open our wallets,’” Anderson said. The organization aims to provide funding for library programming and recently funded the purchase of LEGO bricks for the library’s brick club and popcorn for the teen movie night. “It’s a really important thing that they do for us,” Vashon Children’s Librarian Amelia Lincoln Ecevedo said. “I can do two times the programs with them that I’d be able to do without them.” The Vashon Friends of the Library’s first meeting of 2016 will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, in the library’s meeting room. All are welcome to attend.
Woman pleads guilty to stealing sign advertising gun sales An island woman has pleaded guilty to two charges in connection with the disappearance of a sandwich board sign in town that was advertising gun and ammunition sales. Korina Knudson, 47, stole the sign at the corner of Vashon Highway and Bank Road advertising local gun seller Brad Shride’s business. The theft happened late last month and she entered her plea for the third degree theft and malicious mischief charges on Wednesday, Jan. 6, at the Seattle courthouse. She was given a 12-month deferred sentence, according to King County Prosecutor’s Office officials. Knudson was also ordered to pay a $200 fine, $659 in restitution and multiple associated court costs, county court records show. She was also ordered to complete 25 hours of community service and enroll in counseling.

Vashon freshman raising money for social justice border trip Islanders may purchase luminaries to help young student go to Arizona-Mexico border By ANNELI FOGT Editor
As the presidential debates continue to spark conversations and controversy about immigration, a local high school freshman is tackling the subject head-on by travelling to the Arizona-Mexico border to learn about the issue. Sequoia Gregorich will travel with six other Seattlearea youth in April to talk to immigrants making their way into the country and activist groups trying to help them. The trip is part of the Unitarian Universalist College of Social Justice and BorderLinks programs. Sequoia and other members of the group were selected to go after writing an essay about the issue. In an attempt to raise money to fund the trip, Sequoia’s mother, Patty Gregorich, is beginning a campaign for islanders to donate money in exchange for a luminary. All luminaries will be displayed on Saturday, Feb. 13, along the path between McMurray Middle School and Vashon High School. Luminaries can be dedicated to a person or group that has been a beacon or a person who may need more light in their life. The name of the person or group that the luminary is dedicated to will be written on the lantern, and a path of light will be created. Gregorich said that she hopes the fundraiser will serve as a representation of the trip’s mission. “Some of us are saddened by another type of darkness,

Gregorich said that Sequoia has always been passionate about social justice and advocacy and found the Unitarian Universalist fellowship, which “believes that all people have worth and dignity.” After finding the group in middle school, Sequoia participated in a silent protest

Gregorich said that the experience deepened her daughter’s “quest for more information on immigration justice.” Sequoia seconded her mother’s words and said that she is wanting to learn a lot more about the major social justice issues in the world today. She credits her mother, who she joked is a hippie, with raising her to be aware of the issues.. “I’ve always been thinking about doing (a trip like this), and the opportunity just arose” Sequoia said. “I’m excited, but I think it’s going to be scary, and it should be. It’s not supposed to be a feel-good sort of trip.” She said that the only things she is hoping to take from the trip are a greater comprehension of the issue and the people involved. She would also like to find out ways to help. “I’d like to be able to understand this issue more and explain it to others because there’s a lot of confusion, I think,” Sequoia said. “I really want to help because actions speak louder than words.” The public is invited to attend the luminary walk after dark on Feb. 13 beginning at the middle school. The path will be lit with the community’s lanterns and will be accessible to those who are mobility-limited or in a wheelchair. A minimum $1 to $5 donation can be mailed to Gregorich at P.O. The temperature could even be considered balmy, and islanders were seen out in the island’s forests and parks making up for time spent indoors. Even as the Seahawks took to the playoffs Sunday, visits to Shinglemill Creek, Judd Creek and the beach of the former Glacier site at Dockton Forest revealed islanders, and their dogs, out enjoying the crystal clear, warm day. Seniors and young couples took to Shinglemill’s steep climbs and rocky trail; children chattered and screamed in amazement at Judd Creek, and women decked out in 12’s gear took their dogs to a lookout on the former Glacier mine site to see Rainier. Living in this area allows for a greater appreciation of nice weather and sunlight, and the appreciation is easy to notice on days like Sunday. The forecast is calling for more traditional rainy weather this weekend, but it can be guaranteed that islanders will be out and about on the island’s trails when the rain stops or the sun comes out again.

There are niches that no one is filling at the market that customers routinely request: Eggs, mushrooms, honey, fermented products and locally grown meat are just a few. VIGA’s market committee would like to see a whole row of services ranging from tailoring and small machine repair to shoe repair and even computer and editing assistance. Unique processed foods like Kombucha, preserves, teas, herbs and herbal tinctures would be fun business ventures. There is also room for more ready-to-eat food: imagine a whole row of lunchtime choices that could draw crowds from Seattle. There are also many craft openings that could expand the market offerings in new directions: We could use a sandal maker, sheep skins (collaborate with some of the meat producers on the island) leather work, relief carvings or handmade wooden toys. Finally, the market would benefit from craft demonstrations like blacksmithing, carving and weaving. Local chefs could do cooking demonstrations, which would build relationships that carry over to their restaurants and catering businesses. Customers, imagine a market with all these offerings. Vendors, imagine building on the regional reputation of the Vashon Farmers Market. Together, let’s build this market, rev this engine and take off. Gun sales on Vashon a scary, bad idea for all

Stolen gun sign was ugly, code violation When an ugly black sandwich board sign advertising guns and ammunition (“Gun seller should be able to advertise with no harrassment,” Jan. 6) disappeared from the corner of the main intersection in Vashon, my wife and I debated whether it was in response to the type of merchandise being purveyed or an act of public service in the interest of aesthetics not unlike the one performed by people who walk their dogs when they use a plastic sack to remove from the sidewalk their canine companion’s calling card. If the latter, it’s unlikely anyone would take issue with this gesture toward beautification. Regardless of how one feels about the goods being touted, we find it difficult to imagine anyone disputing the fact that the sign is a crude, amateurish eyesore
that degrades the overall character and quality of the village. There are appropriate places to advertise one’s business, such as in print media or an attractive sign within the permitted distance from one’s shop. Perhaps I should claim my right as a citizen to live in an attractive place with my sidewalks free of unsightly impediments. However, there is a more specific reason for the sign’s removal. King County Bulletin 20A, Department of Permitting and Environmental Review, page three, under the list of “prohibited signs,” specifically mentions “portable signs such as sandwich/A-frame signs” not directly adjacent to the place of business. If there is permit, it would be a service if The Beachcomber would look into the matter and affirm its existence. If there is no permit, then the lawless behavior that prompted its placement should be condemned by the entire community. — Charles L. Nagel, MD

An open letter to those who believe in the wisdom of exercising the right to sell firearms to the residents of Vashon Island: What infinitely remote danger motivates anyone to tell the people of Vashon to purchase guns? On a scale of one to 10, how likely is it that some maniac is going to shoot up this town? The first time I saw the sandwich board sign at the intersection of Vashon Highway and Bank Road announcing the sale of guns and ammunition, I tasted vomit rising in my throat. Not surprisingly, that’s probably the same reaction I’d have if I saw some maniac shooting up the same intersection. In the Jan. 6 letter to the editor, “Gun seller should be able to advertise with no harassment,” the letter reads, “Americans are scared. Your friends and neighbors are arming themselves with personal defense firearms.” Those are the only words offered that might explain why it’s a good idea to peddle guns and bullets. We’re all scared, and our friends and
neighbors are arming themselves? It sounds like a third-rate movie titled, “Armageddon Comes to Vashon Island.” Here’s the TV Guide plot synopsis: “Gun business booms, then all hell breaks loose.” In my mind, guns and those who sell them are profoundly scary and dangerous. No one should make a living from spreading instruments of death and destruction around an Eden like Vashon Island. —Mike Pankratz

My mom lives on Vashon and I live in Olympia. I try to get up there a couple of times a month but I don’t always get to see mom as much as we both would like. I’m concerned about her. She is still very active but she seems to be spending a lot of money on home mainteance issues. I do what small repairs I can, and her house seems in good shape, but I balance her checkbook every month and there seems to be a lot of unusual expenses. I’m sending you some of the bills to take a look. You helped her buy the house and she trusts you.

I’m happy to help and glad you sent the bills. I believe your mom is being taken advantage of. You might want to suggest to her that you have more oversight of her expenses. An example is a company that is testing her drinking water every month. There is no need for that since she is connected to one of our larger water companies and they are required by law to regularly test the water for bacteria and nitrates. Even those of us with private wells rarely check our water quality more than annually. Another thing I noticed is a monthly spraying for wood destroying pests. She has a split level home! It’s a solid cement slab with four foot high cement foundation walls. No wood destroying pests in beams or posts on that house! The siding is well off the ground so there is not even wood contact with the dirt to encourage wood destroying pests. She also paid a contractor from Seattle a tidy sum to wrap all of her plumbing pipes so they wouldn’t freeze. It’s a fully insulated house with no pipes exposed to the elements! No need to wrap pipes. She also heats the house at all times so freezing pipes seems very unlikely. It’s such a shame that many unscrupulous people take advantage of the elderly. I hope you can intervene and get rid of some of these expenses.

ONGOING Ping & Putt: Islanders of all ages and skill levels are welcome to come and play indoor ping pong and putt-putt golf at the Open Space. The ongoing event is cosponsored by the Vashon Park District. The cost for ping pong is $4 per hour for table, paddles and ball or table only for $3 per hour. One table will be available for 30 minute rentals at a cost of $2 per session. Golf costs $3 per round on the six-hole course with putter and ball included, or $25 for a 10-round pass. On Saturday, Vashon Island Soccer Club’s girls U12 Scallywags competed in the semifinal round of the Tacoma-Pierce County Junior Soccer Association’s Leanne Ehnat Championship tournament. The Scallywags lost 3-0 to Norpoint Soccer Club’s Shooting Stars. In what was a competitive first half, the Shooting Stars opened up scoring with a long shot over keeper Lola Kuyper’s head. In the second half, Scallywag strikers Kaitlyn Bonaventura and Cait Jeffcoat could not get any clean shots on goal, and the Scallywag offense struggled to sustain attacks. The Shooting Stars added two more goals to put the game out of reach. The team finished second in the division, earning the right to play in the tournament. Over the course of the season, the Scallywags amassed 53 goals and gave up only 15 on their way to a 9-1-2 record. Choral group celebrates Scottish poet with song and spirits The 18th century bard of Scotland, Robert or Rabbie Burns, made his mark as a lyricist, pioneer of the Romantic movement and as Scotland’s national poet. Since 1802, six years after his death, the Burns Supper has been held to celebrate the man who penned the New Year’s song “Auld Lang Syne” and, Scotland’s unofficial national anthem, “Scots Wha Hae.” The celebration is marked by toasts and ample servings of haggis. If haggis doesn’t whet your appetite, then perhaps you can wet your whistle with Scottish ale brewed by Seattle’s Naked City at the Vashon Allied Arts event “Robert Burns Chorus” slated for 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Blue Heron. The group whateverandeveramen will lead the evening in song and storytelling about the life and work of the famed poet. Brad Pierson conducts the group, which he founded in 2012 as a project-based Seattle ensemble dedicated to performing high-quality choral music in venues not typical for the music. Pierson’s goal was to inspire a new appreciation for choral music, and he often will invite audience members to sing along rather than just be spectators. The singers will lead the evening of Burns’ songs plus other traditional Scottish and Irish drinking ditties. No prior experience is necessary as the songs will be taught throughout the event. The Burns tribute, sponsored by Vashon Allied Arts, is becoming an island tradition though the show is for adults 21 or older only. Concert presents classical music by several Nordic composers Vashon Allied Arts’ Classical Concert series will present a program of music by several Nordic composers at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Blue Heron. Works by Sibelius, Aulin, Gade and more will be performed by violinist Svend Rønning and pianist Lisa Bergman. Rønning is an associate professor of music at Pacific Lutheran University and concertmaster of the Tacoma Symphony Orchestra. He records and performs throughout the world. Bergman is known in the Northwest as a passionate advocate for classical music as a midday announcer on Classic King-FM. She is also the artistic director of the Mostly Nordic Chamber Music Series presented at Seattle’s Nordic Heritage Museum. a very different kind of policing (on Vashon),� he said. To some degree, services can be tailored to residents’ requests, he added, though there are limitations, including budgetary constraints. Still, he said, he and Cunningham genuinely want to hear from people at this meeting and those that will follow. Sometimes law enforcement officials do not engage and share information, he added. “This is my effort to break some of that,� he said. The meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. tonight, Jan. 13, at McMurray Middle School.
Friday house fire in Spring Beach neighborhood extinguished quickly By SUSAN RIEMER Staff Writer
Vashon Island Fire & Rescue responded to a house fire Friday night in the Spring Beach neighborhood on Vashon’s south end and extinguished it before there was extensive damage to the home. VIFR Firefighter Jason Everett, the incident commander that evening, said the fire began in the home’s chimney and then spread to the roof, but did not cause damage beyond that. The
department was called to the fire, in the 14700 block of Spring Beach Road, around 7:30 p.m. Everett noted that fires in that neighborhood are of particular concern because of the community’s remote location, the narrow road in, the surrounding steep hillsides and the frequent winds that come in off the water. However, Everett said that the firefighting operations went well Friday evening, despite the logistical challenges, includ-
ing that the department’s radios did not work there. Turnout to the scene was strong, he added, with at least 10 members of the department, both staff and volunteers, responding. “It all worked out fine,� he said, adding that the department trains for such incidents. “We are mindful and cognizant of the systemic challenges, and we’re constantly working to make sure we are prepared to meet those challenges,� he said.

Former Vashon resident dies hiking on New Zealand glacier The New Zealand Herald on Jan. 3 reported that Eric Jacomb, 54, a Vashon resident who had been residing in New Zealand for more than 15 years, died after falling into a glacier on the west coast of New Zealand’s south island. According to the newspaper’s report, Jacomb is a father of three and was “tramping� near the Mawson Glacier on Jan. 2 with four others. Jacomb reportedly became separated from the group and they became concerned when he didn’t meet up with them. The Herald reports that he fell into the glacier and died. The Herald continues to report that Jacomb was living in Rangiora on New Zealand’s south island and worked for a farming co-operative. In the Hearld’s Jan. 3 story, friends and family remembered him as compassionate and adventure-loving.

VHS wrestlers battle on, still plagued by injuries Boys’ basketball: Team
defeats Seattle Christian

This year, Vashon Pirates wrestlers are so busy learning valuable lessons about adversity and resiliency that there aren’t many of them left to actually compete. Last week, the team traveled to Buckley to take on the White River Hornets on Wednesday, Jan. 6, and wrestled a dual meet at home against Port Townsend and Eatonville on the 7th. After those two days, the incredible shrinking wrestling team lost a couple more athletes to an injured arm, injured ribs and a pesky skin condition. Against White River, Vashon had five JV matches with Pirates Nicholas Nuxoll and Jackson Bard emerging victorious. Both won by pin, while teammates Sean Casey, Adon Ellis and Joe Ghigleri all lost. In varsity action, the Pirates managed to fill 11 of the 14 weight classes, with many younger and less experienced wrestlers getting the call against stiff competition. It was an odd night, where only one of the matches went the full six minutes — a barn burner for sophomore Hunter Burger, who came up just short with a 4-2 loss. The Pirates either won by fall or lost by fall. Freshman Payton Bonaventura won a great match at 106 pounds, followed by wins for seniors Shane Williams, Clyde Pruett and Logan Nelson. Match of the night goes to Nelson, who dislocated his finger twice in the first 60 seconds of the match before adequate applications of tape and a high tolerance for pain saw him pin his opponent at the end of round one. The next night, the Pirates reconvened at the home gym in doubledual action. Vashon wrestled well against Port Townsend, winning nine of 13 matches either by forfeit or

He handily defeated his counterpart with a pin 48 seconds into round one. Vashon cobbled together 12 matches against Eatonville with wins by Nuxoll, Petersen, Ghigleri, Clyde Pruett, Nelson and Bard. Freshman Ghigleri had the match of note against Eatonville. He was up 6-2 at the end of round one, but the score narrowed to 9-8 at the end of round two before he won by fall at the end of round three. He was pleased with the team’s efforts during tough times. “With all the injuries, it was exciting to see our young guys compete as well as our seniors — Clyde, Logan and Shane. The team had the weekend off to rest and recuperate before beginning the second half of the season this week. On Thursday, the team will travel to Bellevue Christian for the first Nisqually League action of the year. The next day, the team travels to Klahowya to face tough regional competition. The Vashon High School Pirates boys’ varsity basketball team kicked off Nisqually League play Friday night with a win in SeaTac against the Seattle Christian Warriors. The game was the first of eight Nisqually league games in the 2016 season for the Pirates, who are now 10-2 overall. The game started quick and strong for the Pirates, with Samuel Schoenberg hitting a three-pointer within seconds of the tip, and Vashon’s fullcourt defense holding the Warriors for a shot clock violation. After Edgar Polkat’s steal fed into Sam Yates’ speedy fast break, it felt like the rout was on with a 15-6 lead after the first period. The Vashon defense held firm for the remainder of the half, with Jemiah Hoogen and Langston Dziko absorbing two physical offensive charge fouls from Seattle Christian, which ended the half with 14 team fouls. And on Vashon’s offensive end, Sean Delargy and Sam Schoenberg led the way, hitting multiple threepointers and finishing out the half with a combined 22 points. Vashon led 29-15 at the halftime buzzer.
In the second half, Vashon came out to score, with Alex Symbol getting in on the action with a baseline jumper and Schoenberg hitting his fourth three-pointer of the game. But the Warriors came fighting back on the performance of senior center Taggart Anderson to come within five points by the end of the third quarter. The score was 42-37 heading into the fourth. In the fourth quarter, Seattle Christian’s Anderson kept his team in the game, showcasing his own three-point range to match the deep accuracy of Vashon’s Yates, Delargy and Schoenberg. Anderson led his team with 25 points but did not get much help from the rest of the team. In the end, Vashon’s rebounding and ball handling skills helped to drain the clock. And as Seattle Christian resorted to fouls, the Pirates were able to convert free throws to seal the game 57-52. The boys played Bellevue Christian Tuesday after press time and will take on Lindbergh (Renton) on Monday, Jan. 18 at home. — Joel Schoenberg is the father of a Pirate basketball player.

The Vashon High School girls’ basketball team visited the Seattle Christian Warriors on Jan. 8 for their first league contest of the season. The Pirates began the game trying to work the ball inside during much of the first quarter, having marginal success, as they committed several early turnovers, which limited their scoring opportunities. Both teams had a slow start offensively, and the Warriors led by a score of 12-8 with about five minutes left in the second quarter. Soon thereafter, the Warriors were able to put together a quick scoring run, sparked by two consecutive three-pointers, and they outscored the Pirates 10-5 to finish the first half with a 22-13 lead. During the third quarter, the Pirates began to connect on some nice shots, keeping the Warriors from extending their lead, but still found themselves down by a score of 32-25 to begin the final quarter of play. The Warriors extended their lead back to nine at the beginning of the fourth quarter, but then Vashon got aggressive on defense, forcing the Warriors into some turnovers, leading to some muchneeded fast-break points. With about five minutes left in the game, the Pirates were within six points and held that margin until about one minute remained, at which time the game became very exciting for the crowd as the comeback effort began. After a timeout, junior Eva Anderson drove down the court and made a short two-pointer to get the Pirates to within four. On the next possession, as the Warriors brought the ball across half court, senior Annika Hille
made a nice steal, drove down the court, missed the short lay-in attempt, but grabbed her own rebound and passed across the key to freshman Olivia Larson for a lay-in, and the Pirates were now within two. The Pirates then committed a foul to stop the clock, putting the Warriors’ Alex Ellis at the line for two shots. Ellis made one of two free throws to make it a threepoint game with 21 seconds left. On the next possession, senior Siena Jannetty drove down the court and made a two-pointer to make it a one-point game. But with only eight seconds left, the Pirates had to foul quickly, putting Ellis at the line again, and she calmly made both free throws to put the Warriors back up by three. Still with eight seconds left and needing a threepointer to tie, the Pirates were unable to get off a good shot, then fouled Ellis yet again, and she made one of two free throws for the final score of 44-40, Warriors. Jannetty led the scoring for Vashon with 12 points and also grabbed two rebounds. Hille scored 10 points, grabbed six rebounds and also nabbed four steals. Larson scored seven points and grabbed three rebounds; Natalie VanDevanter made six points with three rebounds; Anderson scored five points, and senior Kate Atwell grabbed four rebounds. The next game of the season was Tuesday after press time against Bellevue Christian. Registration for spring sports is underway With spring just around the corner, registration for spring club sports is underway. The Vashon Lacrosse Club, now in its 25th year, is looking to field boys’ and girls teams for several ages, and organizers stress lacrosse experience is not necessary. “We welcome new players,” said Michael McMillan, a board member of the club. Players are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible, ideally no later than Feb. 15. Registration, which has been open for several weeks, has been going well for boys’ teams, though additional players are welcome at all levels, he said. For the girls, registration has been going more slowly, but the club is expecting to field the same teams it did last year, he added. Practices will begin in February for players in grades three through high school. To help keep the cost of the sport down, the club has a rental program, especially for those in their first or second year and trying out the sport. Playing costs typically run higher for the boys, as more equipment

Vashon Youth Baseball & Softball is also welcoming new and returning players and fields teams of all ages, including coed T-ball teams for kids under 6, machine-pitch teams for kids under 8 and teams for boys under 10, 12 and 14. Registration as soon as possible is encouraged. He said he also wants to sleep, exercise, read, travel and get back to practicing music during his retirement. “I had studied to be a musical composer in college and played piano seriously,” Kappelman said. “I finished my undergrad work at Carleton (College in Minnesota) and went to Texas (The University of Texas at Austin) and started music,” Kappelman said. “After two years in Texas, I went to medical school at Washington University.” Kappelman said that while in medical school, he had incredible experiences and got the chance to travel to Guatemala and care for patients and then spend a summer in Alaska. “All of those experiences consolidated and cemented my interest in family practice medicine,” Kappelman said. With his mind made up, he came to Providence Hospital in Seattle in the early 1980s and did a three-year residency before finding Vashon in 1983. “Vashon was an under-served area, and Granny’s (Attic) was integral to the clinic’s survival. I came in July 1983 thinking it would be temporary,” Kappelman said. “I came
over here to fill in for doctors on their days off, and I had no specific plan to stay.” Then one of the clinic’s doctors became sick and Kappelman found himself in the former doctor’s position. “I took over, and it never ended,” Kappelman said. At the time, he was living in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood and commuting to the island. He commuted for 14 years, but said he never missed a day at the clinic. “I’ve always been very proud of that. The roads would be icy, and I had my car with weights in the back to keep from sliding around, and the power would go out, and we’d work in the cold and make house calls,” Kappelman said. While on duty, he stayed in a little cottage at Klahanie Beach, just north of KVI beach, and said he had to take a rickity little tram down the bluffs each night. “It was cold, cold, cold,” he said. “I eventually had a bedroom made for me at the clinic for when I had to be there after-hours, and a piano was donated so I could play when no one was there.” He recalled that on his first Christmas on Vashon, all the pipes at the clinic burst, and his instruments and equipment were floating in the drawers. “I thought, ‘What did I get myself into?” he said. He stitched up K2 employees who would get injured at work in the middle of the night, and would go with the fire

department and treat the trauma patients the firefighters responded to. The island’s rural nature grew on him, and he began to love the range of medicine he practiced here. He moved to the island in 1997 and began work on the rammed earth house on 204th Street, where he and his wife raised their two daughters. While his work both in and out of the clinic was varied, he said his favorite memories are from his days delivering babies, which he and Koch did until around 2003. “It’s been a change letting that go,” he said. “I loved that part of (the job). It was a great thing and a lot of fun.” He said his most memorable delivery was when he followed the parents’ car onto the ferry to get to Seattle and was sure that the mother would make it to Swedish. “We got off the ferry, and I told the father to wave his arm out the window if anything progressed,” he said as he recalled the day in the 1980s. “We were going over the West Seattle Bridge, and the husband puts his hand out the window. We pull into this gas station, and she’s in a Volkswagen van. I leaped into the van and caught the baby before it hit the ground.” When babies weren’t being born at gas stations, Kappelman and Koch took on the clinic and the changing medical landscape. Both doctors said that many things have changed in the last three decades as corporations and insurance providers merge and switch, but the changes have never affected their way of working. “It’s been a huge change in the industry and . . . the political environment is difficult,” Kappelman said. “A lot of doctors get burned out, but the thing that feeds us is patients and keeping them first.”

Haulman broached the idea a few years ago. “I have been fascinated with Marshall since the time I used to see him on the streets,” Ray said. The two reached out to Sohl’s family members and owners of Sohl’s work and began to assemble the show. The result includes storyboards on the walls and several paddles — many of them on cast-off cores of K2 skies — wood burned, painted and some with glitter, hanging from a mobile and adorned with tape in true Sohl style. Nearby, a large portion of Sohl’s own workshop is set up, complete with working drop lights above the desk and countless three-ring binders full of Sohl’s notetaking and historical research. Combined, those elements, along with the photos of Sohl, including one larger than life by Jenn Reidel, bring to light the man and his remarkable body of work. Faith Sohl, one of Marshall Sohl’s eight children, still lives on the island. She, a sister and their mother, Dora Mendoza Sohl, attended the opening last month. “The tears came right to our eyes,” she said. “I felt the sense that Pops was alive. He was alive in that exhibit.” Speaking about Ray, who assembled the work space, cleaned all the paddles and made the mobile they hang from, Faith Sohl said he succeeded in his goal. “He tried to capture my dad’s personality. I thought he did a beautiful job. He took the essential pieces and created the feeling of being in his studio,” she said. Walking through the exhibit last week, Ray noted that when Sohl first began his work, he only did wood burning, but over time, he added paint to his pieces, including vibrant gold and hot pink, and his boards became more colorful — but were always meticulously rendered. In the center of most of the boards is a dominant image — typically a map — and around it arranged in a uniform grid, countless facts, which Sohl researched, hand-lettered and burned into the wood, along with their locations on the map. A storyboard about Burton shows all of these elements. The middle of the board shows the Burton Peninsula, and around it in small squares are an array of handlettered, woodburned facts that span eras,

Newport 1912.” Haulman, in an article about the exhibit for the museum’s newsletter, points to the craftsmanship in each piece. “Notice the precisions of the layout — the symmetry of everything, the clarity of the lines, the exactness of the lettering, the deliberate use of paint,” he wrote. Sohl’s attention to detail sprang from four areas, Haulman added: his training in the Army as a surveyor, his wood burning skill taught by an island neighbor, his attention to historical research fostered by another islander and his experiences in the South Pacific as a combat engineer during World War II. “If you look at his work, it is overloaded with information,” Haulman said. “There is not a space that is not covered with something. It is a real genius — to have these experiences and put them together in this artwork that is phenomenal. There is nothing else quite like it.” Sohl was born in 1919 in the Rainier
Patrick S Nielsen Patrick S Nielsen - Beloved husband, dad, grandpa, brother, son, and friend passed away on 12/18/15 of a heart attack. Patrick was born March 24, 1953 to Naomi and Jim Kerns in Seattle Washington. He was their oldest son. He was adopted by Robert Nielsen when his mom remarried. He was raised in Seattle until 1957 when they moved to Vashon Island. He graduated from Vashon High School in 1972. He served in the US Navy from 19721975, the US Coast Guard from 1977-1981, and the US Navy Reserves 1982-1991. In retirement, Patrick moved to Olongapo City in the Philippines, where he lived for the last ten years. He is survived by his father Jim, nine siblings, wife Emily, his two daughters Candria and Kristine, and four grandchildren. He will be greatly missed. Patrick was buried in the Philippines on 12/30/15 with full military honors. A Memorial Service will be held at 2 pm on 1/16/16 at Trinity Lutheran Church 2020 Franklin St SE, Olympia, WA 98501.
Valley and grew up in the region. When World War II began, he enlisted and was trained as a surveyor and combat engineer, Haulman said, serving mostly in the Pacific Theatre. Of the 200 soldiers who entered the war in Sohl’s unit, only 18 survived. Afterward, he became a surveyor working on highway projects. When I-5 began in Seattle, he returned to the area and worked on connecting I-5 with the new Highway 520 bridge. In 1962, the family moved to Vashon from Bothell, where they had been renting a home for $40 a month; he recounted the story in a 2002 Post-Intelligencer article. “I read in the paper there was land on Vashon going for $18 down and $18 a month. There was no power, no water. Just swamps and forest all around here. I learned how to water witch and dug a well. That was the start of it,” he said. The family settled in the Spring Beach neighborhood, Haulman added, and
there Sohl met one of the men who would influence his work, Baron Elbert von Stauffenberg. Referred to as “The Baron,” he was an accomplished wood burning artist and taught Sohl the skill, which he went on to include in all of his pieces. Additionally, with island historian Roland Carey, Sohl shared an affinity for detailed historical research, venturing to libraries in Seattle, Portland, Olympia and Tacoma in search of more information. Speaking to her father’s appreciation of history, Faith Sohl said one of his wellknown sayings was, “Some people make art for art’s sake. I make art for history’s sake.” By some accounts, however, Sohl did not consider himself an artist. In the Post Intelligencer article, he clarified how he saw his himself. “Not an artist,” he said. “That sounds high. You could call me a primitive. Wookworking’s in my blood, and that’s the truth. I come from people who make things. Just call me a maker.” Faith Sohl, noting the detail involved in his work, said his large pieces took 1,000 hours to create and he would joke that when he sold them he earned a penny an hour. By the end of his life, that had risen to $1 an hour, though his last piece sold for $2,500. Ray, who spent hours creating and installing the exhibit, said he has read only portions of each of the storyboards but would like to read them all in their entirety — a task that would take untold hours. “You could do a feature-length documentary about any one of these boards,” he said. “Any of them you can get sucked into and become curious about.” Stepping back from one of the pieces he had been reading from, he added, “If anyone wants to supplement their Jesus Barn knowledge of the island, they can come read all about it.”
The show will hang in the heritage museum at 10105 Bank Rd. until March 20. Museum hours are 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays. Admission is by donation.
Nancy Ruth Capps Nancy Ruth Capps, a longtime resident of Vashon Island, died peacefully in her home on Sunday, December 27th 2015, after battling a long illness with cancer. She was born in 1952 in Seattle, WA. Nancy attended Federal Way High School, Highline Community College, and Evergreen State College where she did an internship at the Institute for Dance Movement Therapy. She began her work career as a jewelry store manager for Fred Meyer. Later she became an esthetician and had her own business. Nancy had a true love for nature…caring for birds, animals, plants, and trees. She loved living next to the water. She studied meditation, Reiki, Shen and other healing modalities. Nancy is survived by her half-sister, niece, and step brothers, who all live in the Puget Sound area. A memorial service in honor of Nancy will be held at Island Funeral Services on Vashon Island at 2:00pm January 30th, 2016. Donations in Nancy’s name can be made to Vashon Island Pet Protectors, Vashon Island Youth and Family, Vashon Community Food Bank, or Heron Habitat Helpers.

He was a scrawny, scrappy looking kitten with a serious eye injury. He was not neutered and he tested FIV positive. Fast forward several weeks and we have a thriving sweet cat who is now neutered and has been to an animal eye specialist. It turns out that he will need to have his injured eye removed. Once that happens, Scrappy will be ready for his new life in a safe and warm home. He will need to be an indoor kitty and he will shower his new person with love and appreciation in exchange for lap time and regular meals. Born about 2006, Ned is a small sized male cat with a big heart and a gentle soul. He doesn’t have a mean bone in his body. Ned is looking for a quiet home where he can be loved and spoiled for the rest of his many years.
