Vashon nonprofits Moving away, island volunteer leaves behind address wide range long list of community accomplishments of local needs SUSAN RIEMER Staff Writer

Editor’s Note: This is the fourth and final story in a series that explores the state of nonprofits on Vashon, specifically how they fared in 2015 and what they have planned for 2016. Roughly one dozen nonprofits have been profiled in the first three stories of this series, and another six are contained in this writing, but these 17 nonprofit organizations are only a snapshot of the many that serve the Vashon community. While the focuses of the organizations range from pets, to the land, to the education of schoolchildren and resources for those with low incomes, it’s clear that the island’s nonprofits look to fill in the gaps that aren’t filled due to Vashon’s unincorporated county determination. The island’s Interfaith Council to Prevent Homelessness (IFCH) works to provide subsidies for rent and utilities so people can stay in their homes and provides free meals for those in need; Zero Waste Vashon (ZWV) works to preserve the environment and teaches
about smarter ways to consume and dispose; Partners in Education (PIE) provides island teachers with grants for materials and resources not paid for by district or state funds; the Vashon Schools Foundation raises money for school district budgetary shortfalls, and the Vashon Tool Library creates a place where islanders can get the necessary materials to improve upon or build new things. IFCH founder Emma Amiad said last week that the organization works to “fill the gap” between rent and wages for those who live and work on the island. “Our biggest challenge is the incredible rise in the cost of rentals,” Amiad said. “Most of those who work on the island make about $25,000 a year, but the average rent is $1,800 a month. It just does not add up.” She said that a new program spearheaded this year by community activist Hilary Emmer resulted in people in need of rental subsidies being paired up with donors who could help them. slanders who passed the Vashon Theatre a few weeks ago may have noticed a message of gratitude on its marquee. “Thank you, Rex Stratton,” the sign read for several days running.
After nearly 20 years on Vashon, Stratton and his wife Barbara plan on moving soon to the East Coast to live closer to their daughter and grandson. Mindful of their coming departure, theater owner Eileen Wolcott said she wanted to thank Rex publicly for his role in the 2012 fundraising effort that enabled her to buy a digital film projector — equipment essential to staying in business. “We are going to miss him quite a bit,” she said. “He is kind and compassionate and analytical, but he is always thinking about the well-being of everybody. He is looking to expedite the best path to happiness for all sides.” Indeed, Stratton, an attorney whose practice focuses on intellectual property law, has volunteered countless hours for causes in addition to the effort that put his name up in lights, including helping to bring Puget Sound Cooperative Credit Union to the island and serving as a volunteer and commissioner for Vashon Island Fire & Rescue (VIFR), among a multitude of other activities. Earlier this month, during a long conversation at his west side home, Stratton, who will turn 71 next month, talked about his civic roles, while a common theme ran through them. “Just being a member of a committee is not fulfilling. As the attitude of intolerance toward refugees, immigrants and the Muslim community grows in many areas, islanders are taking steps to assist where they can and ensure that immigrants on Vashon feel welcome. Several islanders interested in assisting Syrian refugees are learning what it would take for the island to welcome one or more families or support them in other ways. An informational meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 5, at the Vashon Library; all interested people are welcome. This will be the second meeting on this issue, according to Carolyn Gill, one of those involved. She suggested that everyone who attends consider what resources they could contribute to a refugee family, from providing a room to offering to babysit to taking people to the grocery store. A previous meeting was held at the Gills’ home earlier this month with guest speaker Greg Hope, the director of the Refugee Resettlement Office in Seattle. In a Facebook post following that meeting, Jeffrey Gill noted the greatest challenge in resettlement is coming up with enough money for rent; employment opportunities are also important, as well as language issues for non-English speakers. He also indicated that Hope wondered whether a community as isolated as Vashon would be ideal for a refugee family. Carolyn Gill said she believes those involved are looking for ways to provide assistance that is truly beneficial, whether that means welcoming refugees or providing other kinds of support. In an unrelated effort, several local businesses have joined a nationwide effort to combat intolerance by placing “Hate Has No Business Here” signs in the windows of their shops. The signs read: “We stand with our Muslim community members. We stand with refugees and immigrants in our community,” and “All are welcome here.” The message that all are welcome is also translated into a myriad of different languages, including Spanish, Arabic and Japanese. Emily Keiko Pruiksma, a Japanese-
American islander, said that the signs mean a lot to her and her family members, many of whom had to deal with a similar situation after the Pearl Harbor attacks. “I’ve heard so many stories from my Japanese-American grandparents, aunties and uncles about their experiences after the bombing of Pearl Harbor,” Pruiksma said. “It brings our community so much pain to know that other innocent people are experiencing the same fear and hateful treatment now. We’ve all been searching for ways to change and heal this story.” She is spearheading the local effort to spread the word about the signs and said last week that the Vashon Library, Vashon Pharmacy, Thriftway, Minglement and the Vashon Bookshop were just a few of the businesses that had agreed to post the sign or pass it on to the owner for approval. Minglement owner Eva DeLoach said that the signs are a “nice call to action,” but that everyone should be being welcoming and non-censorious anyway. Vashon Tea Shop owner Elizabeth “Boo” Dinan-Slack seconded DeLoach and said she doesn’t think anyone should or would feel unwelcome in her business. “As far as I’m concerned, they’re welcome here,” Dinan-Slack said. “The tea shop welcomes everybody; gays can find shelter here; anyone who is being harassed is welcome here.” The Hate Has No Business Here movement began earlier this month at the independently owned Minnesota business Common Roots Cafe. According to the cafe’s website, the owners decided to put up a sign “to make it clear to Muslims, immigrants and refugees in our community that they are welcome in our place of business and that we stand by their side.” The sign soon caught the eye of the Main Street Alliance, a national organization that works with small businesses to give them a voice on national issues. The alliance took the cafe’s sign and turned it into a national movement that has made its way across the country. VoV teaches broadcasting, NEWS BRIEFS Food filmmaking to students Sound building sells
Three Vashon High School (VHS) students and a McMurray eighth grader are training under Voice of Vashon (VoV) experts to learn the technology behind radio commentary, video broadcasting and documentary filming. According to a statement from Vashon Island School District Superintendent Michael Soltman, at the beginning of this year, VHS juniors Jacob Danielsen, Aaron Johns and Michael Clark and McMurray eighth-grader Lars Cain began working with VoV to produce a bi-weekly radio show called Fresh Delivery. The project reportedly went so well that the students were “invited to learn all they could about the engineering aspects behind the Voice of Vashon,” Soltman said. The students soon began controlling the board at the studio while VoV broadcasters commentated VHS basketball games. With the basketball season in full swing, the students have taken over all engineering duties at VoV during game broadcasts. With radio responsibilities conquered by the students, Soltman said that VHS Riptide Advisor Steven Denlinger decided to add a broadcast component to the Riptide produc-
tion schedule. In the fall of 2015, a group of students led by seniors Danielsen, Brandon Fairbanks and Mary Lawrence started broadcasting live video of the high school’s football games. “There were all kinds of interesting technical difficulties to be overcome and lots of real-world, on-thejob learning as a result,” Soltman said in his statement. “During football season, eighth-grader Lars again ran the board at VoV, and a rotating group of student commentators, including VHS senior Sam Yates, announced the action from the press box.” The students have expanded their repertoire and are currently filming, editing and posting VHS’ Open Mic productions online, as well as creating short documentaries about the VHS journalism program. Soltman said he is delighted that students are getting “real-world, applied learning experiences.” The students will continue broadcasting the high school boys’ and girls’ home basketball games. The next home game for the girls is at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, against Bellevue Christian. The boys will play the same day after the girls’ game.

After several years on the market, the Sound Food building at the corner of Vashon Highway and 204th Avenue has sold. King County Assessor’s Office records show that the building sold for $805,000 on Saturday, Dec. 19. The building has been owned by islander Jeff Cunningham since 2005, but assessor’s records show the new owner is CSL Properties NW LLC. Secretary of State records list the LLC’s agent as islander Greg Stoffer. Reached last week, Greg Stoffer’s wife and John L. Scott real estate agent, Diane Stoffer, said that she could not comment because the sale had not yet closed. “You never know with these things. It could always fall through,” she said. New downtown shop features organic skin care and wild-crafted jewelry By JULI GOETZ MORSER Staff Writer
Lapis and Luxe is the most recent business to open its doors this year on the west side of Vashon’s town core. Housed in the northern half of the former liquor store, Lapis and Luxe is owned by Kimberly Smoot, a licensed aesthetician, and Kathryn Tonnessen, an artist and herbalist. The shop, which officially opened last Friday, sells organic skin care products and essential oils, jewelry, stained glass and watercolor artwork and is a skin care treatment and nutrition support center. The store’s name reflects the interests of the two owners: Lapis refers to the wild-crafted — meaning sourced from the wild — jewelry created by Tonnessen. A Vashon resident for the past several years, Tonnessen makes necklaces out of stones from the island’s shores and earrings from feathers dropped by local birds and even the translucent backbones of squid. From the day the shop opened, Tonnessen’s jewelry has sold quickly, Smoot said. At the back of the store, three 6-foot panels of stained glass by Tonnessen portray a classic Northwest scene of Mount Rainier. As for Luxe, the word refers to Smoot’s profession as an aesthetician. Before moving to Vashon two years ago, Smoot ran her business,

Now, she can combine her skin care treatments, facials and peels, organic makeup, hair tinting and removal with her passion for nutritional support. She sells Eminance, an organic bio-dynamic skin care line from Hungary. She gives treatments in a room located at the back of the store and painted a soothing deep green, where she also offers her clients information and support for eating nutrition-rich foods. “I give a full-on facial massage, which includes a leg, arm and scalp treatment, steam and mask. It’s really a lovely all-body treatment, and it’s different from what most people have had,� she said adding that while she is not a doctor, she talks to her clients about what she sees during the facials and how it might relate to nutrition. Tonnessen, who Smoot calls a plant shaman, has worked at Cedarsong on the island and is currently going to school for acupuncture. “She has foraged and taught classes,� Smoot said. “She harvests everything and is very knowledgeable. She is also very artistic — the downstairs of her house is an entire craft room. She has a storyline for where she collected (elements for) each piece of her jewelry. She is a plant shaman and herbalist.� The duo plan to offer coffee and tea to clients who come for

For now, we’ll offer what we offer, and then add the evening workshops.� In addition to the skin care line and jewelry, the shop currently sells colorful handwoven bags made by the Masai in Kenya; earrings from Dakota Wolf, a former Vashon resident, plus watercolors by Smoot’s mother Suzanne Birch. “We’ve already had great sales,�
Smoot said. “We are happy with it, but the best part is that we are hearing that the space is calming, that it has a good feeling in here.�

Make a New Year’s resolution to find a tribe, help your health

eople who need people are the luckiest people in the world,” sings Barbara Streisand. In truth, we all need people, but some of us, myself for one, don’t like to admit it. One of the basic human needs is closeness to other people; without it, infants don’t develop properly and can even die. But how much do we need other people? And what kind of connections do we need? In communities where many healthy folks are over 100 years old, there are particular kinds of connections: multigenerational families that spend a lot of time together is one kind. In those places, centenarians say that family is their top priority. Faith-based communities are another kind of connection; the health benefits do not depend on the type of faith. Spiritual practices relieve stress, which is good for health, and sharing those practices with others adds to the benefits of human connections. Creating a “tribe” of people who share a healthy lifestyle and who support and

We felt blessed to have these people help us. The key to a long and healthy life is to have people like these in your life all the time and to give to them as much as you receive. The holiday season puts a spotlight on whether we have a tribe or not. My husband and I lack immediate family in this area, and every year I think I will find people to share Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations with us. Every year I procrastinate until it is too late. I’m turning 60 in February 2016. It’s about time I built my tribe. So this is my New Year’s resolution: In 2016 I will intentionally build a tribe of people who share my interest in a healthy lifestyle, who I want to support in their lives and who I trust to support me. Finally, with the placement of the last beautiful wood beams and metal brackets, the full outer frame of the new Vashon Center for the Arts (VCA) is visible. But how do you enter the building? Actually, lots of ways. This will be a very easy access facility. After a cup of coffee at Minglement, you could cross the intersection and enter the Northwest corner, with most pedestrians, through a big door in the large glass North wall. Or, if you arrived by car, you'd probably park in the lot just to the east of the building and enter through the main double doors on that same side. Both entrances lead to the spectacular North-end lobby, next to the new gallery. This building will be a real workhorse though, so there will be several other access points. A door on the very South end of the building makes for a quick dash to and from the Blue Heron. The West-side breeze way (reminiscent of Minglement's front porch) will have quick access to both lobby and 'back of house' classrooms and dressing rooms. Really big stuff like stage sets will come and go through the loading dock on the Southeast side. 60 percent finished! What's really incredible, is that the VCA is already more then half completed! In just four months, every door in the place will be busy, allowing audience members, performers and anyone who's just curious, into the open house and the first performance.
2015 has come to an end. I want to express my gratitude to those whose questions I have tried to answer here. Also thanks to all of you who stop me around town to comment on those answers! I want to welcome your questions concerning real estate matters in general and Vashon issues in particular as we move into 2016. It is always my hope that people will learn from the mistakes of others. It can save you a lot of money, time and anxiety. This has been a very busy year in real estate. Over 180 homes have sold this year in every price range from $165,000 to over $1,500,000. Land sales were also vigorous with over 34 parcels selling this year. I recall that one year, during the depths of the recession, we sold only 7 parcels of land and 75 homes. The reason for the jump in home sales this year and last is partially because homeowners were waiting out the recession, hoping for a better market to sell. We anticipate that 2016 will be a great year too. Most of our sales are a result of folks moving off the Island because of a job transfer, or because of divorce or death. Rarely have I heard of anyone leaving because they just don’t like it here. We always have a significant number of sales involving people already living on Vashon who are just moving to a different type of property on the Island. Their kids get older and now they want acreage for horses, or the owners are aging and want to buy down to a smaller place. Then there are those people who are doing very well and want a larger or nicer home, maybe something on the water or with a big view. Whatever the market, I want you to know I will continue to be available to show you homes and land. Moreover, I am always available to consult, answer questions and just be a resource for our wonderful Vashon Maury Island community. It’s a pleasure and an honor to serve you.

ONGOING Yard and Food Waste Pilot Program: King County and Zero Waste Vashon remind everyone that the yard and food waste pilot program is underway at the Vashon Transfer Station. Results of the program will help determine if a permanent program is feasible. Yard and food waste collected from Vashon will be composted at Cedar Grove Composting in Maple Valley. Yard waste accepted includes branches, grass clippings, leaves, weeds and Christmas trees (not flocked or artificial and no decorations). Branches and trees must be less than 8 feet long and less than 4 inches in diameter. Food waste accepted includes fruit and vegetable scraps, breads, bones meats, cheese and coffee grounds (and may be placed in compostable bags). The cost is $12 per load, up to 320 pounds. Three Vashon violinists and their teacher, Gaye Detzer, took their instruments and holiday spirit to the Cathlamet ferry Monday, Dec. 21. The quartet played a variety of songs, from Christmas favorites like “Jingle Bells” and “We Wish you a Merry Christmas,” to “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.” The onboard performance took place on the 4:35 p.m. sailing from Vashon to Fauntleroy and back. Detzer said that the ferry performances are a tradition that she is picking up again.

Most people listen to their conscience but not many have had a chance to sit down and have coffee with it. I have been lucky enough to do that because, at least for these history articles, Bruce Haulman has been my conscience. Bruce, as many people know, is a real historian on the island not, like me, a gag writer with a love of all things in the past. Bruce generously gives up his time once a week or so to help me find stories to write about, steer me in the right direction when the facts are ambiguous and point out when I’m flat out wrong. I can hear him now telling me in his mellow, friendly voice, “No Chris, the Superbowl was never played on Maury Island” or “Bunker Trail is not named for Archie Bunker” or “Tiger Woods never caddied at the Vashon Country Club although that might be where he ends up.” But even with our vigilance some mistakes unintentionally made it into print and for that I would like to offer my apologies and corrections. In one article I wrote about how some of our roads got their name. Bank Road had the nickname “whoopie road” and I said that was because there were so many make-out spots along its route. It turns out the nickname was correct but it was due to the hilly route which gave the sensation of riding a roller coaster. I like my version better. My biggest known whopper was the story regarding brick factories on Vashon. I said there were 52 brick factories at the height of this industry. That fact raised a few eyebrows including my own but there it was in black and white from a reliable source. Bruce tells me, however, there were only about a dozen such operations on the island. My guess is the error comes from a mistyped “5” instead of “1” but for a weekly column cross-checking references is a luxury I cannot always indulge. If there are any more facts or figures that are not quite correct, please know that they were done unwittingly and the error rests solely with me. I would like to say I hope you have enjoyed reading my articles as much as I have enjoyed writing them. Happy holidays and may your coming year be a historic one!

Quartermaster Drive spearheads road construction in 20th century By TERRY DONNELLY and BRUCE HAULMAN For The Beachcomber
Quartermaster Drive was completed between what is now Monument Road and Portage in 1914. Before then, the road to Portage followed present-day SW 216th Street and dropped down to Portage at Tramp Harbor, where Highland Avenue SW is today. Portage was first filled in 1897 when a crew from the Dockton Dry Dock built a causeway to allow a water-level passage for those going to Dockton. In 1914, King County constructed the bulkhead along the northwest end of Quartermaster Harbor and laid the road seen in the 1914 photograph. Notable in the photograph is the Sherman House where the road turns, which remained there until it was burned in 1936. The house at the top of the hill in the center of the photograph is no longer there. The house along the water, to the left of the road as it sweeps up the hill, was built by Dick Fredrickberg around 1912. On the left-hand side of the 1914 photo, on the beach lies the remains of the Molly Bleeker, the large flat-bottomed barge that served as a home for the Bleeker family and used to transport bricks from their brickyard at Burton to destinations around Puget Sound. The area on the
point above the remains of the Molly Bleeker was declared Bleekerville, but was never developed, much like many similar plots around the islands that remain undeveloped. The current photograph shows the road as it exists in 2010. The original bulkhead lies about where the fog line of the current road is, and the road itself has been significantly widened. A new rip-rap bulkhead has also been installed by King County. The Sherman House is gone and is now part of the Middling property. The house at the top of the hill in the original photograph was taken down and replaced by the current house that is obscured by the trees. The Frederickberg house along the water is still there, although substantially remodeled and expanded. Pirate breaks state rushing record Vashon High School junior Bryce Hoisington broke the Washington State rushing record this year, rushing a total of 2,929 yards in 10 games. The feat came after the Pirates’ Nov. 6 game against the Coupeville Wolves; Hoisington rushed 573 yards, breaking the VHS single-game rushing record.
Vashon dogs capture the hearts of the world Vashon was catapulted to international fame in mid-September after Vashon Island Pet Protectors posted this photo of dogs Phoebe and Tillie on its Facebook page. When islander B.J. Duft’s dogs disappeared, VIPP mounted a search for them and found basset hound Phoebe in a cistern. Tillie, a setter-mix, kept watch over her trapped friend and left to look for help every day. After more than a week, the two were found, and this photo was snapped. The story went viral with news outlets as far away as the Middlee East and Scandinavia picking it up. Tillie was later awarded a Washingtonian hingtonian of the Day award by Governor Jay Inslee.
Maury Island’s iconic Point Robinson lighthouse turned 100 in 2015. The centennial of the former Coast Guard station was marked in April by a special exhibit at the Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Museum, and the lighthouse got a new roof in June.

The Vashon Island boys’ basketball team picked up two more wins last week, bringing its season to 8-1 overall. The Pirates took on Darrington at an away game on Saturday, Dec. 19. With two evenly matched teams, the game was close, and the Pirates won by just two points: 47-45. The Pirates were at home Monday, Dec. 21, and took on Bremerton’s Crosspoint High School. The game brought another big win for the boys with a 73-43 victory. The Pirates’ starters set the tone quickly, getting two steals and scores to start the game. Crosspoint did not seem to have the same size and speed to keep up with Vashon, as the Pirates pulled out to a 48-19 lead in the first half. The dominance continued at the start of the second half with a 12-0 run by Vashon scoring on fast-break points and put-back rebounds. Coach Andy Sears primarily used bench players in the second half, and the future certainly looks bright for the Pirates with dazzling ball skills and crisp passing from the bench to close out the game and secure the victory. The Pirates headed to Bend, Oregon, over the Christmas holiday to participate in the Les Schwab Holiday Hoopfest basketball tournament. The tournament includes many notable teams from Oregon, California, Washington, Alaska and even Australia. Vashon’s first game of the tournament was after press time, Dec. 28, against the Sherwood High School Bowmen from Sherwood, Oregon. The boys will return to Washington for their first league game on Friday, Jan. 8, against Seattle Christian. The 5:30 p.m. game will be an away game. — Joel Schoenberg is the father of a Pirate basketball player.
Vashon Island High School’s girls’ basketball team traveled north on Saturday, Dec 19, and defeated the Darrington Loggers. The Pirates were able to take command of the game early thanks to the hot hand of freshman Chloe Kuyper. Within the first few minutes of the game, she snatched a couple steals, converted them into fast break lay-ins, grabbed a defensive rebound, took a few dribbles down the court and calmly drained a three-pointer from the top of the key. Senior Natalie VanDevanter finished out the first quarter scoring with a nice mid-range shot from just inside the free throw line for an 11-6 lead. Thanks to the aggressive play of the Pirates, who again converted several steals into fast-break points, the Loggers’ offensive struggles continued in the second quarter. Junior Eva Anderson and Kuyper provided more offense, while senior Annika Hille converted three of four free throws and made a mid-range shot to end the half with the Pirates leading 23-11. The second half featured more of the same, and the Pirates rolled to an easy 51-23 win. Hille got the hot hand in the second half on her way to a career high 21 points. Kuyper finished with a season best of 17 points, and junior Eva Anderson added eight. Senior Melanie Stoffer led the rebounding effort with seven;

Kuyper and Anderson each grabbed six boards, and VanDevanter grabbed five. On Tuesday, Dec 22, Vashon hosted the Coupeville Wolves in another non-league game for both teams. The challenge for the Pirates in this game was defending Wolves senior Makana Stone, a solid 5-foot 11inch tall post player, who averaged over 18 points per game entering the contest.
It turned out to be a defensive game for both teams, as the scoring was difficult to come by, and the Pirates played to a 15-all tie in the first half. The Wolves went on a 7-0 run to begin the third quarter as the Pirates went cold and couldn’t get any shots to fall. Anderson was finally able to stop the bleeding by nailing a threepointer with about three minutes remaining in the period. But the Pirates managed only six points in the quarter and trailed by five entering the final period. In the fourth quarter, freshman Olivia Larson gave a nice defensive effort while Anderson again came up with some timely shots to keep the game within reach. But the Pirates couldn’t close the gap, and the Wolves were able to secure a 36-29 victory. Anderson led the Pirates on offense with nine points; Hille had seven, and Kuyper had six. Kuyper also grabbed five rebounds, Hille and VanDevanter grabbed four each, and Anderson and junior Selena Mildon grabbed three each. The girls traveled to Mount Vernon over the Christmas holiday to participate in the Bulldog Classic Invitational, on Dec. 28 and 29, after press time. The Pirates will begin league play in January with a 7:15 p.m. away game Friday, Jan. 8 ,against Seattle Christian. — Joel Hille is the father of a VHS girls’ basketball player.

the organization’s meal program is “going terrific,” but hopes the county’s efforts to expand transportation on the island can help more people get to the free meals. She continued to say that she feels the county’s updated comprehensive plan can give Vashon a voice. “My personal perspective in terms of the comprehensive plan and transportation plan is that it gives us some glimmer of hope that (the county) knows we’re here and need help,” Amiad said. “They’re recognizing the gentrification with more and more million-dollar homes being bought in cash and no affordable housing. Hopefully there’s funding for affordable housing in the comprehensive plan.” While the IFCH is fighting to keep people in their homes, Zero Waste Vashon is fighting an entirely different battle. The environmental group is focused on recycling and figuring out ways to reduce and reuse the waste the island creates. The organization had a year of projects: putting recycling compactors in at the transfer station over the summer and starting a year-long yard and food waste disposal pilot program in October. ZWV Treasurer Jerry Henley said the yard waste program is going “very well and surpassing expectations,” but the food waste program is still in its implementation stage as the community is trying to figure out how to best aggregate and transport the waste to the transfer station. He said the organization will continue trying to find the best collection method through 2016. “We’re expecting to have a big year (next) year,” Henley said. “We had the pilots started with the county this year, but next year there will be projects related to the island specifically. We have a lecture series with hopefully four people to come speak about reducing, reusing and the environmental issues we’re concerned with, and then we’ll be heavily involved with the community gardens on the island.” He said the organization is also planning on doing more work related to composting in an effort to supplement Vashon’s unhealthy soil. “We’re always looking for help, and donations to go toward our efforts,” Henley said. In the education arena, PIE and the Vashon Schools Foundation this year contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to island schools. Founded nearly 30 years ago, PIE has given a total of more than $1 million in grants to local teachers

for educational materials. This year, the organization’s annual fall grant program resulted in the funding of 25 grants totaling just under $38,000. The grants were awarded to island teachers at Chautauqua Elementary School, McMurray Middle School and Vashon High School, and the school board was given a glimpse into a few of the programs being funded at the Dec. 10 school board meeting. “Each year we present a big check and our favorite grant from one teacher at every school,” PIE President Jenna Riggs said last week. The favorites this year were Chautauqua’s birding program created by fourth-grade teacher Jan Smith, VHS’ grant requested by math teacher Lisa Miller for geometry blocks so students can build shapes in 3D and McMurray’s woodshop class led by science teacher Lea Heffernan. “She needed a special, very, very safe table saw,” Riggs said. Riggs said 2015 was a successful year because the organization was able to fund everything it wanted to fund. Looking to next year, Riggs said that the organization has the same goal and will continue fundraising at the sheepdog trials and through the annual phone-a-thon. At the schools foundation, Administrative Coordinator Donna Nespor said that the organization raised close to $250,000 this year. The five-year-old nonprofit has raised a total of $2 million
to help keep staff and teachers in their jobs and replace outdated curriculum, but this year Nespor said the focus was on suicide prevention and mental health resources. She said she would like to keep that focus in 2016. She said the foundation will also be funding new curriculum as soon as the district and school administrators give their approval. With the schools providing the metaphorical mental tools needed to succeed, a new nonprofit is aiming to provide mechanical, literal tools. Vashon’s Tool Library was founded earlier this year and rents out wrenches, air compressors, paint sprayers, axes, ladders and anything else a person may need to repair or build a home, shed or garden. “The Vashon-Maury Tool Library is a community resource designed to support and promote shared use of tools on Vashon and Maury Islands,” the organization’s website states. The organization is a project born out of Sustainable Vashon and has more than 280 members who have contributed to the library’s inventory and rented out hundreds of the tools. Tool Library founder Steve Graham said 2016 will bring an expansion of the organization’s classes and workshops, particularly chainsaw classes and bicycle workshops. He also said he has applied for a county grant to hopefully be used for a large-scale Earth Day event.

Resin (Reese) Wyman J ANUARY 27, 1923 – D ECEMBER 17, 2015
Resin (Reese) Wyman left us on December 17, 2015. He was born on January 27, 1923 in Port Angeles, WA. Reese was a WWII veteran and fought in the European campaign during the war as a fighter pilot, specifically flying in P-51’s, P-47s, and spent sometime in the B-17 Bombers. After the war, Reese worked in many jobs, but enjoyed photography. He eventually worked for the Boeing Company for over 27 years, mainly in Engineering as a Contract Compliance Coordinator. He retired in the late 1980’s. Reese and his family lived in many parts of the country, but Washington State was home to him. Reese and Edith lived on Vashon Island, in Federal Way, Shelton and finally in Graham, WA. Reese is survived by Edith, his wife of 72 years, his four children, Lynn, Lee, Katy, Liz and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Reese has quite a number of friends and will definitely be missed. Rest in Peace, Reese. A memorial gathering will be at a later date. Please sign the online memorial at www.bonneywatson.com. •

The marquee at the Vashon Theatre extends a message of thanks to Rex Stratton. Rob Harmon, an environmental entrepreneur also instrumental in the credit union effort, noted that Stratton’s training as a lawyer means that he knows how to work through problems carefully and methodically. “That is an essential skill for changing the world or changing an island,” Harmon added. “But he brings a lot more than that. He brings the willingness to just stand up and act. Lots of people act without thinking. Lots of people think without acting. Rex knows how to think, and he is utterly unafraid to act.” That willingness to act may have played a key role in Stratton pursuing a different type of activity altogether: He became a volunteer with the fire department at age 63. “I could see the need for volunteers was substantial,” Stratton said. “I thought I better walk my talk. I got in better shape, passed the physical and got to be a support volunteer.” In that role, he learned to drive the department tenders and rescue vehicles and responded to fire calls and motor vehicle accidents, where, he noted, he frequently directed traffic from the middle of the road. “Nobody would get by me,” he said, adding with laugh, “My best use in the fire service was as a traffic cone.” Stratton went on to serve as a fire commissioner in a six-year term that ended this week; Chief Hank Lipe, however, shared a markedly different view of the value of Stratton’s service. “His ability to communicate at the appropriate levels and always come up with ideas or solutions that were of the highest standards — it amazed me sometimes,” Lipe said. “I cannot recall any time I would ask for his opinion and he did not have quantifiable solutions and give me ideas about how to go about addressing them.” Lipe credited Stratton with being an advocate for all members of the department and for reaching beyond Vashon and getting the department involved with county issues through the King County Fire Commissioners Association. One of his biggest accomplishments as
a commissioner, both Stratton and Lipe agree, occurred shortly after he was elected. The administration learned there had been a six-year period when eight of Vashon’s volunteer firefighters were not signed up for a retirement program, a problem that had occurred at other fire districts as well. The law would not let them buy back in to the program, and Stratton began working with the Board of Volunteer Fire Fighters and Reserve Officers to change the law. He drafted the needed legislation and gave it to Sen. Sharon Nelson (D-Maury Island), who introduced it. It passed after two legislative sessions, thanks to Nelson’s efforts, Stratton said, and VIFR bought back the members’ pensions. “That was huge. That was incredible,” Lipe said. “I did not think he had a prayer.” Hearing that assessment, Stratton laughed. “I was not sure I did either,” he said. “I said I was going to do it, and by God, I was going to get it done.” Now, looking ahead, Stratton has new plans in mind and a timeline for the pending move. “My goal is March 18, my grandson’s second birthday,” he said. He and Barbara will settle in Vermont, and Gornall, who worked with Stratton in Island GreenTech and on countless other projects, said he expects Stratton will keep up his efforts after he moves. “Do not be surprised to hear of this little town in Vermont that has expanded into new horizons. The community will be better for him being there,” he said. As for Wolcott, who benefitted personally from the work Stratton helped shepherd for the theater, she said she is impressed with the Strattons’ decision to move at this stage of life, leaving such a rich history behind. “To leave a place where you are beloved, that is brave. For me that is the most inspirational thing Rex has done. He is going to go out there and start over again,” she said. “That is pretty fantastic. It is a good lesson.”

Sammy’s son, Oscar is 10 years old. He is a bit shy at first, and may hide from loud noises, but he shows his loving side by cuddling in your arms at night. He is very quick to purr, sometimes drooling with affection when being petted. When he was a kitten, his favorite play thing was a sheer purple scarf which earned him the name Oscar Wilde, who had similar tastes. :-) He’s a goofy little guy. Often, he just flops over on his side when he comes to greet/cuddle, as if he is overcome with his own cuteness. Has such a serious face, but is a cuddle-bun at bedtime.

Meet Jodie, a small breed mix that is aching for someone to love her and help her feel safe. 4 years old and she loves lap time and snuggling in the blankets more than just about anything in the world. She also loves taking walks and is great with other dogs so would swoon to have another pooch companion in her new forever home.
