The Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board released its new cap on marijuana retail licenses Wednesday and Issaquah will be allotted an additional spot for a store. The city currently has one sanctioned store, the Issaquah
Cannabis Company. The increased allotments are the result of work by the Board, the state Department of Health and other agencies to roll existing purveyors of medical marijuana — alternatively called dispensaries, access points or “collective gardens,” as they’re known in state law — into the recreational
retail system as directed by the Cannabis Patient Protection Act signed by Gov. Jay Inslee earlier this year. “Our goal was clear: To ensure medical patients have access to the products they need,” Board Director Rick Garza said in a press release. A third-generation Eastside builder is planning to specialize in traditional Indian architecture. “My industry is very old and very Anglo,” said Mike Stewart, founder of Auspicious Homes. “It’s an indus-
try that needs to change.” His mission to build Vaastu-inspired homes throughout the Eastside took shape while he worked as a realtor in the Issaquah Highlands area. He realized at least half of the people coming through were tech professionals from India — and they were all asking for
things the current cookiecutter industry does not supply, he said. For example, no one builds a home thinking about where the puja room (a room dedicated to prayer) should be or considers building a spice kitchen, Stewart said. Typically, Eastside build-
ers buy a large plot of land, subdivide it and build tract housing: a one-size-fits-all approach. Stewart’s grandfather began building homes on the Eastside in the 1950s. His father, of Greacon Homes LLC, built about 25 homes in the Sahalee neighborhood and around 80 more

years. He began his career there as a firefighter and paramedic in 1991. Chandler, more than 1,400 miles south of Issaquah, has a population of about 250,000 people. Clark has also served as fire chief for the Chandler County Island Fire District, which provides emergency response to county islands within the city’s boundaries. Additionally, Clark was

The team learned, from a 2012 TED Talk former Oregon Democratic Party Chair Joe Smith gave, that one paper towel can do the job of four or five if the user vigorously shakes the water from their hands into a sink and folds their single towel in half. The folded towel dries with greater efficiency thanks to interstitial suspension — meaning, essentially, the water is absorbed through multiple layers of material. After playing the video and explaining how they pitched the concept to their classmates, the team called up Superintendent Ron Thiele to demonstrate the technique. Thiele dipped his hands in a wash basin, gingerly shook his hands 12 times and wiped them off with his folded towel. “Well,” he said. “They’re

‘Sammamish’ a candidate for name of next state ferry

“Sammamish” is one of three leading names the Washington State Transportation Commission is considering for its fourth, $122 million Olympic-class ferry. The commission is seeking public input on the eligible names at its next meeting Jan. 12 and 13, in Olympia. The commission will make its final selection in March 2016. The Washington State Department of Transportation has been building new, 144-car ferries to replace four of its oldest vessels. The total project has a $515.5 million budget. Two of the new ferries are currently in service. The third will be complete in 2017; the fourth is set to be completed in 2018. Of the 24 vessels in the fleet, nine are between 40 and 60 years old, approaching the end of their service lives, according to the commission. Per the commission's

McCleary funding plan? Not this year
E
ight lawmakers entrusted with The Petri Dish drafting a school funding plan in line with the tenets of the state constitution and dictates of the Supreme Court won’t complete their task this year. The contingent of Democratic and Republican lawmakers met for a final time Dec. 14, adjourning JERRY without agreement on the contours CORNFIELD or content of a proposal to put forth in the 2016 session. They plan to gather again Jan. 4, 2016 — one week before the session begins — with hope but uncertainty of reaching an accord. “We’re still negotiating. We’re taking our task very seriously,” said Rep. Norma Smith, R-Clinton, who is one of the lawmakers in the work group. “What we’re trying to do is craft something that can be well-received in the Legislature.” What this means is the Legislature will begin 2016 just as it did in 2015: in contempt of a Supreme Court order demanding a blueprint for amply funding public schools by the 2018 deadline set in the McCleary case. In addition, a $100,000-a-day fine levied by justices in August continues to pile up. Thursday will mark the 127th day of sanctions which amounts to $12.7 million. Any notion those sanctions will push lawmakers toward a more rapid conciliation hasn’t occurred as some lawmakers, including a couple members of the McCleary Eight, think the Supreme Court exceeded its authority. There is resistance to any action perceived as placating justices. “Our focus has been on doing the right thing for the education system, not on responding to the Supreme Court,” said Rep. Chad Magendanz, R-Issaquah. “The fines are not

One of the first acts of the new council will be to (internally) vote on a mayor. The new mayor should be Ramiro Valderrama. Ramiro has earned the trust of the citizens and the rest of the council
But they are still wrestling with how to end the reliance on local property tax dollars to pay teachers, principals and staff. It will require a new method of compensating school employees with state funds. That will cost money and could see some residents paying new or higher taxes. The Democrat-controlled House and Republican-run Senate couldn’t find a solution in this year’s recordsetting 176 days of session. And their leaders don’t plan on finding one in 2016 — an election year — either. Since September, the work group, with help from two of Inslee’s top

In the first 16 minutes of play, the Redmond Mustangs hit seven three-pointers but still trailed the Issaquah Eagles 37-32 at halftime in a Class 4A KingCo boys basketball contest. Redmond connected on just one three-pointer in the second half and Issaquah rolled to a 69-46 victory on Dec. 18 at Issaquah High School. The Eagles, who improved their overall record to 6-0 with the win, knew they had to find a way to slow down Redmond’s outside shooting. Issaquah head coach Jason Griffith said it was just a matter of his team extending their zone a tad more on the perimeter. “The kids did a good job of not getting sucked in the second half. We contested more shots but you have to give Redmond credit. They
hit a lot of shots in the first half,” Griffith said. Issaquah senior guard Scott Kellum poured in a team-high 24 points in the win. Kellum nailed a threepointer, drawing the foul while being knocked to the floor with 3:27 left in the third quarter. He hit the ensuing free throw extending Issaquah’s lead to 47-38. “We were hitting open shots and my teammates were finding me. I was just happy to knock them down. It was a good night,” Kellum said. Griffith was glad to see Kellum get into a rhythm on the offensive end. “Scott is one of our leaders and he showed he is one of the better players in KingCo (Conference). We’re proud of him,” Griffith said. The Eagles, who nabbed a fourth place finish at the Class 4A state tournament last March, are playing with a chip on their shoulder.
Kellum said not many individuals thought the Eagles would be this good this season due to the graduation of star player Ty Gibson this past June. Gibson is currently a freshman basketball player at Eastern Washington University in Cheney. “A lot of people didn’t think we could do the same thing we did last year without Ty,” Kellum said. “We’re trying to prove them wrong right now.” The Eagles will compete in the Torrey Pines Holiday Classic in Southern California during Christmas break. “We are in the national division and we play Fairfax in our first game. They are ranked No. 26 in the nation and are typically one of the better teams in the country. We go to these national tournaments to see what we are made of. We pride ourselves on being competitive,” Griffith said.

the relatively unregulated nature of medical marijuana commerce, the possibility of underreported revenues and the number of dispensaries that have shut their doors since the Cannabis Patient Protection Act was signed into law. However, the researchers were able to estimate the medical marijuana market’s value somewhere between $290 million to $690 million, with $480 million determined as the best estimate, based on a census of stores and voluntary survey of revenues. King County was determined to contain the greatest share of the state market, producing 36 percent of state revenues from medical marijuana and containing 31
percent of verified dispensaries. King County will nearly double its allowance of retail licenses, save for the four cities that have instituted bans or moratoriums on recreational marijuana. The Sammamish City Council voted to prohibit marijuana enterprises in October 2014. Additionally, four cities — Burien, Maple Valley, Mercer Island and Tukwila — have allotments for retail licenses but no operating retailers. Those cities will nevertheless double their allotment. Issaquah is currently home to one medical marijuana dispensary, GreenLink Collective. Other area dispensaries, such as Ahh! Advanced Holistic Health and East-
side Greenlight, have recently closed. GreenLink has operated in Issaquah since 2012 and, if it applied for a retail license, could qualify as first- or secondpriority applicant. The Reporter asked Cliff Gehrett, the general manager of the Issaquah Cannabis Company, what his thoughts were on the possibility of a competitor in city limits. “We’re just focused on our business and serving our existing customers as best we can,” he said. The Issaquah/Sammamish Reporter contacted GreenLink Collective by phone and email for comment. GreenLink did not respond as of the early holiday deadline.

Vaastu is something that’s not necessarily seen but felt, Stewart said. “Had I known about (Stewart) three years ago, I would have bought Vaastu, because I’ve seen the difference,” said Ritu Ruia, of Sammamish, after attending Stewart’s first talk on his business Saturday afternoon in Sammamish City Hall. Ruia, a mortgage advisor with Absolute Mortgage, said she really struggled to find a Vaastu home when she and her husband moved here. She recalled calling her
mother in India, concerned about the lack of Vaastu. As long as her puja room was Vaastu, her mom advised it would be OK. “I hope his product sells,” she said. “It’s a good product.” Venk Sai, of Bellevue, also attended the talk with his wife Meena Venkat. “Buying a house is one of the biggest decisions of your life,” he said.
