Profile: Navy Wives Club of Bremerton Group provides emotional support — and ways to get involved

lthough by name it appears to be a support group for those whose active-duty spouses

are away on deployment, there is much more to the Navy Wives Club. In recent years, the Navy Wives Club of America has evolved into a significant source of assistance to

the military community of Kitsap County. The club is a nonprofit educational and charitable foundation with branches all across the United States These chapters, most

prominent near military installations, routinely hold fundraisers to provide active duty, veterans and spouses with needed resources, such as counseling, financial assistance and referrals, as well as opportunities to build relationships and get involved in the community. See CLUB, Page 5

USS Turner Joy hosts legacy academy for incoming CPOs BREMERTON — Navy Region Northwest chief petty officer selects graduated from a CPO Legacy Academy aboard the USS Turner Joy (DD-951) Aug. 28. The academy entailed living aboard the Vietnam War-era destroyer while participating in community relations projects, ship preservation and leadership training. It concluded with a ceremony on the pier in front of the Turner Joy Museum. “It was definitely a unique perspective,” said Chief (Select) Fire Control Technician Matt Deklaver, from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, assigned to USS Kentucky (SSBN 737).

“Learning to work with sailors attached to surface ships was something I may have not had the chance to do in my career otherwise. No matter what the challenge was, we would put aside any differences we had and overcame.” As the 37 selects marched onto the pier singing “Anchors Aweigh,” their mentors and families waited to greet them. “As future chiefs you will be entrusted to keep our naval heritage alive,” said Senior Chief Musician Roy Brown, of San Diego, California. Near the end of the ceremony, the graduating class presented a plaque to the Turner Joy with their class number and names

to commemorate their accomplishment. “What all these men and women did here is the start to something much grander,” said James Levinne of Bremerton. “They are going to be the ones in direct contact with the younger generation of sailors, helping them and shaping them into the best they can be.” As the ceremony concluded, chief selects gathered their belongings from the ship and set off to bring their newfound knowledge back to the fleet, keeping tradition and heritage alive for sailors to emulate in the years to come.

Help for veterans transitioning into the future T

he second-highest number of veterans enrolled in Washington’s colleges and universities? That would be Olympic College. Kitsap County’s diverse economy and emerging industries — as well as quality of life and relative affordability — make our region a great place to settle in retirement or post-enlistment. But the key to successfully transitioning to a career in Kitsap’s economy is education. We’re fortunate to have one of the 10 best community colleges in the U.S. (Aspen Prize); active-duty personnel, dependents and retirees have access to quality two-year degree programs as well as an increasing number of undergraduate degrees. Now, there’s an additional big benefit for veterans attending OC: Olympic College has received a three-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education, for $320,000, to create a new student center for veterans. The new Center of Excellence for Veteran Student Success will be designed to boost veteran enrollment and help ensure they complete programs to earn degrees. This investment enables Olympic College to hire additional staff that will provide enhanced advising and orientation, conduct outreach and develop systems to monitor student success and ensure early follow up if students are struggling. The funds also provide for staff training and professional development. “This award is great news for the continued growth of OC as a destination for veterans and active-duty servicemembers,” said Rep. Derek Kilmer, D-Bremerton. “It will help military members further their education and learn new trades at Olympic College. This investment reinforces how much Olympic College does for members of the military and their families by helping them transition into the next phase of their careers.” Olympic College also signed a biennial Memorandum of Understanding with the state Department of Veterans Affairs to continue their participation with the Partners for Veteran Supportive Services. The agreement seeks to increase awareness of veterans’ programs on and off campus; encourage campuses to implement best practices and policies to support and welcome veterans; and help veterans succeed in postsecondary education and training. We appreciate and applaud every effort by those involved in these initiatives to ease the transition for those who have served our country. Such initiatives as these will provide the support and services that our military personnel, veterans and their families need to be successful in their transition from the military into higher education.

SOUND OFF Informative story on Coast Guard in WWII I picked a copy of the August edition of Veterans Life at the Bangor commissary. The front page feature article caught my eye (“America’s Forgotten Fleet / During World War II, 75 former Navy frigates were manned and commanded by the U.S. Coast Guard”). The author, Sara N. Miller, did a nice job with the article and I learned something that I didn’t know, even though more than 28 years of my life were spent in the

USCG. To Ken Meinke, the subject of the article, thank you for your service! There were other Coasties that manned transports during that wartime era. Anyway, a “good read” — thanks for giving the Guard the newsprint. Now on page 3, in the table of contents reference to “A salute to our Coast Guard,” you have a slight error when you refer to the USCG as “ ... the nation’s oldest seagoing service.” Not so! The U.S. Navy is our oldest seagoing service. Now, if you would have written, “... the nation’s oldest con-

tinuous seagoing service,” then it would be correct. We’re in a Navy county, and we don’t want them to be upset. As for a new name for Veterans Life, if you wanted to be all-inclusive, how about just “Military Life”? Best regards, P.R TAYLOR, USCG (RET) Via email Editor’s note: Duly noted.

Continued from page 1 Members, generally spouses of active-duty service members of all military branches, conduct business meetings monthly to plan volunteer projects and other community service efforts. Despite the name — which at one point was to be changed “Navy Spouses’ Club” — the club is open to everyone regardless of marital status and branch affiliation. “We’re here to help in all ways,” national vice president Joey Price, a member of the Navy Wives Club’s Bremerton chapter, said. “Diversity is great because it brings new ideas.” Founded five years before the onset of World War II, the Navy Wives Club is committed to giving. The club was founded to help form bonds, and to support sailors’ families and spouses while they were underway. The members hold the belief “They also serve, who stay and wait” (this later became the club’s motto), and originally comprised of Navy, Coast Guard and Marine Corps wives. The club has adopted six resolutions that advocate support of our military; caring for the blind; supporting the flag; and deterrence of drug, spousal and child abuse. The club’s scholarship program was started in the 1950s, offering students of military families assistance in obtaining a college education. Each year, 30 scholarships of up to $1,500 each are made available for dependents, representing one of the many services the club provides. Each autumn, club

members from across the United States convene to decide on a national project. These projects involve partnering with other charities to provide services to those in need. This year, the club has decided to join “K9s For Warriors” to provide wounded warriors with service dogs. For those who gave the ultimate sacrifice, the Navy Wives Club pays honor by participating in Wreaths

Across America. Taking place on Dec. 12 each year, this event salutes veterans who gave their lives to protect America’s freedom by placing wreaths on their graves at the Arlington National Cemetery. The Navy Wives Club is a major supporter of this event; members nationwide spend all year fundraising in order to purchase supplies to make wreaths for the fallen.

Price said of the club’s principles of dedication and commitment, that nobody in need of assistance gets turned away. Throughout the year, the Bremerton chapter donates blankets and footwear to local fire departments and provides support for misguided youth who have been incarcerated. During the holiday season, the club works with the YWCA to provide gifts during the holiday season.

Price said the club derives great satisfaction from making a difference in other people’s lives. The local branch of the Navy Wives Club of America meets at the Jackson Park Chapel Fellowship Hall in Bremerton at 10 a.m. on the second Saturday of every month. The next meeting is on Oct. 10. Daytrip: Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge You could be a lighthouse keeper for a week

ne tank of gas will get you to and from one of the most beautiful beaches on the Olympic Peninsula. And, if you don’t mind some visitors, the lighthouse at the end of the spit can be all yours. At 5.5 miles in length, Dungeness Spit is the world’s longest naturally occurring sand spit and home to the Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge.

The refuge is a sanctuary for more than 250 species of birds, 41 species of land mammals and eight species of water mammals. Its trails and picnic areas offer breathtaking views of the beaches, Dungeness Harbor and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. If you’re up for the hike or a paddle to the end of the spit, visit Dungeness Lighthouse, built in 1857 and now on the National Register of Historic Places. The New Dungeness Light Station Association has manned the lighthouse since 1994. If you join the association, you can stay a week in the lighthouse keepers’ quarters for a relatively low fee: A family of four can rent part of the keepers quarters for $350; a larger group can rent the entire house for $2,100. “When you stay at the lighthouse, it’s yours for a

week,” said Chad Kaiser of the association. During the day, you’llhelp the association maintain the lighthouse by caring for the grounds and giving tours. Your last day, you’ll make sure you leave the house and grounds the way you found them. Otherwise, it’s just you and the eagles, harriers, otters, orcas ... and the stunning sunrises and sunsets. There’s wireless Internet and satellite TV. But, really? “You are as isolated as you want to be,” Kaiser said. The association will give you a lift to and from the lighthouse. Otherwise, access to the lighthouse is limited to hikers at low tide and small boats in calm seas. Boats and kayaks need to call ahead for reservations, as water access is limited to minimize the disturbance to marine mammals and

Designated as a refuge in 1915 President Woodrow Wilson established the Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge on Jan. 20, 1915 as a refuge, preserve and breeding ground for

native birds. Dungeness Spit protects nutrient-rich tideflats for migrating shorebirds in spring and fall; a quiet bay with calm waters for wintering waterfowl; an isolated beach for harbor seals and their pups; and abundant eelgrass beds for young salmon and steelhead nurseries.

Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge is open to the public year-round. Hiking, wildlife viewing and photography are popular activities. Pets, ballplaying, bicycles, camping, kite flying, Frisbees and fires are not permitted, as they are a disturbance for migrating birds and other wildlife.

Leonard Hitchman receives medal 70 years after liberation

INGSTON — Leonard Hitchman is a man of few words. He lives by himself in a beautiful house he and his wife built on old family property near the water in Kingston. Hitchman was drafted when he was 18. He was a member of the Army Air Corps that helped liberate France during World War II, and he recently received a medal from the La Consule Générale by a decree signed by the President of the French Republic thanking him for his service. “I received a letter in July,” Hitchman said. “It wasn’t for a specific award for one certain thing. It was for ‘the contribution for liberating our country.’ ” So read the letter that Hitchman received in July. Along with the letter came the medal. A medal enlisting Hitchman as a chevalier of the Legion of Honor. “I spent all of 1944 in France, in various battles,” Hitchman said. “We arrived in Normandy 17 days after D-Day and were there until the end of the war. We were in Germany, Belgium, Austria but mostly in France.” Hitchman attended Queen Anne High School in Seattle and was drafted in February 1943. After training in various places, he was shipped to England in December that same year. He and his troop operated out of Southern England during the Battle of Britain. “Germany was bombing Britain every night, and we were stationed in an airfield south of France,” Hitchman said. Their job was to fly over with bombing and strafing. Shortly after the infamous invasion of June 6, 1944, Hitchman and his crew prepared to head to Normandy where they were stationed right behind the beaches.

“The war broke out and we started reconquering France. Our job was to stay ahead,” he said. “When armed forces met resistance, we were called for air support to move whatever was in the way.” When the war ended, Hitchman still had several months in his service. However, he and his troop were sent home. went to the University of Washington to get a degree in business. Hitchman then worked for 40 years in the agriculture business before retiring and moving to Kingston. The house he lives in has been in the Hitchman family since 1928. What used to be summer property with rudimentary cabins and tents is now a

There is much less traffic.” The windows from the kitchen and living room look out over the bay, and on the top of the TV cabinet where Hitchman likes to watch the Seahawks play, sits a small model of a plane with the inscription “K-4” on the side. “That is a model of a plane I crewed on during WWII,” Hitchman said. “[The] plane crashed in a lake in Austria close to the end of the war. Navy volunteers upgrade playground PORT ORCHARD — When you need to complete a project, just call in the Navy. That’s what happened Sept. 19-20 when 75 community and active-duty Navy volunteers descended on Clayton Memorial Playground, on Dwight Street, to clean, paint and refurbish the site. The playground was updated and refurbished in 2012 to coincide with a reunion of the USS Lewis and Clark submarine crew. At that time, the playground was spruced up but the rest of the park was left for a future upgrade.

“wonderful surprise.” “I was just a young kid and went where they sent me,” he said. “As far as an interesting military career, I was fortunate. I went a lot of places, did a lot of things.”
