Around a dozen Federal Bureau of Investigation agents executed a warrant on a home on the 15000 block of S.E. 25th Street early on the morning of Sept. 14, according to an eyewitness and local police. Around ten FBI vehicles and between 10 and 15 agents were seen at the residence around 6 a.m. on Sept. 14. The reason behind the FBI’s actions is unknown at this time. “I can confirm that we executed a search warrant at that location, and gladly report that our routine activity went smoothly,” said FBI

In the haze of that first week after the Sage and Isaac Cook went missing – talking to the police, frantically making phone calls, trying desperately to locate the boys – the first day of school came and went unnoticed by David and Helen Cook. It wasn’t until later that they began to notice the children heading off to school, Sage and Isaac Cook absent from the crowds. “What’s been hardest, I think, has been seeing little kids hopping off of the school bus at the end of the day and skip home, or the groups of kids waiting for the bus
in the morning,” Helen Cook, the boys’ stepmother, said. “We used to do that routine with them every morning.” The boys, Helen and David Cook had been looking forward to the start of school, which would have been after Sage and Isaac returned from a visit with their biological mother in California. That was late August; the Cook brothers, aged 14 and 9 respectively, haven’t been seen or heard from in three weeks. While the Bellevue Police Department and the Los Angeles Sheriff ’s Department search for the boys, and David and Helen Cook desperately try not to think about the band practices, soccer games and other milestones the boys are missing. During David Cook’s divorce with the boys’ mother, Faye Ku, education had been a point of contention. As a Harvard graduate,

Cook valued traditional schooling. Ku, meanwhile, was a proponent of “unschooling.” Unschooling is reportedly a method of self-directed homeschooling that puts the drive and responsibility for learning in the hands of the child, according to Home Education Magazine. It was one of many intense views Ku holds, David said; she also believes vaccinations cause diseases. The courts ruled in Cook’s favor in 2009. The dust had begun to settle when Ku abducted the two boys in June 2013 and headed to Sea-Tac Airport, where she attempted to board a plane to Taiwan. They were detained by the local law enforcement. Bellevue residents have voluntarily cut their water use by 14 percent over the last month in response to the abnormally dry spring and summer. “Bellevue residents and businesses have done their part in helping the region cut water use by 14 percent over the last four weeks – exceeding requests by water providers to cut use by 10 percent,” according to a news release from the city of Bellevue. Despite the reduction and a handful of recent rainstorms, officials are warning residents that continued water conservation is strongly encouraged. “While the recent rains have helped, it has not been enough to return water supplies to normal levels,” the city said in the statement, adding that the region still needs to replenish regional water supplies for people and fish. The region experienced it’s all-time driest May-July and unusually hot weather throughout the summer.

Bellevue and cities throughout Puget Sound originally asked citizens to voluntarily reduce their water usage by 10 percent on Aug. 11. Asking citizens to voluntarily reduce their water use was the second in a fourstage water shortage plan used by the Cascade Water Alliance, which supplies water to Bellevue and other Eastside cities. The first step was a water advisory, which was issued on July 27. “At this time we are not thinking about introducing a mandatory reduction, but we definitely need people to continue to find ways to reduce their water use,” said Bellevue Utilities spokesperson Michael May. The decision to enter a mandatory curtailment is up to Seattle Public Utilities, which provides water to the Cascade Water Alliance. In the case that SPU called for a mandatory reduction, the Cascade Water Alliance (including Bellevue) would likely follow suit. To further conserve water, May recommended residents turn towards indoor solutions such as upgrading to water-conserving fixtures and fixing leaking pipes. “The weather had cooled, so maybe now is the time to think about ways that people can save water indoors,” he said.
Officials have identified Bellevue resident Timothy Hagan, 62, as the climber that died during a climb in Mount Rainier National Park on Sunday, Sept. 13. Hagan was one of three climbers that left Carbon River to camp and climb in the Lake Crescent area. After a successful climb of The Chief (elevation of 7,076 feet), Hagan reportedly fell during the groups’ descent, according to the National Parks Service. Weather conditions prevented efforts to locate Hagan by air on Sept. 14, but a ground team of two park rangers and Mount Rainier National Park’s exclusiveuse helicoptor were able to reach the victim on the morning of Sept. 15. His body was transported to the Pierce
County Medical Examiner’s office, where it was confirmed that Hagan died of multiple blunt force injuries. An active climber, Hagan was reportedly attempting to scale all 100 of the Mountaineers Peaks at Mount Rainier National Park. The Chief was one of two remaining peaks he needed to complete the task. The Chief is a pronounced, rugged peak located in an isolated area just east of Windy Gap on the Northern Loop Trail, and is one of two summits of Sluiskin Mountain. He had also scaled 18,491-foot Pico de Orizaba, the tallest mountain Mexico and the third highest in North America, and 20,561-foot Chimborazo, the tallest mountain in Ecuador, according to Peakbagger.com, where many climbers log their goals and summits.

Mayors from across the Eastside helped welcome the incoming Leadership Eastside (LE) classes during a luncheon at Cascade Community College in Bothell on Sept. 11. During the luncheon, the mayors discussed both their respective cities as well as those of other neighboring communities while discussing with attendees possible ways to improve both. Those attending included Bellevue Mayor Claudia Balducci, Bothell Mayor Josh Freed, Mercer Island Mayor Bruce Bassett, Issaquah Mayor Fred Butler, Duvall Mayor Will Ibershof, Snoqualmie Mayor Matt Larson, Redmond Mayor John Marchione, Sammamish Mayor Tom Vance and Kirkland Mayor Amy Walen. “It’s a great event, and it’s been growing. It’s always very uplifting, actually,” said Balducci. LE is a Redmond-based organization that promotes connections between leaders and better relations with communities on the Eastside. The Leadership Eastside Leadership Enrichment Program is two-year program where the participants develop and exercise skills to meet the needs of business, non-profit, and government leaders and help improve their organizations and their communities. “Leadership Eastside builds capacity in our communities to tackle difficult problems,” Marchione said. “I look to [Leadership Eastside] graduates to fill the boards and commissions positions.” Year two has them create their own regional sustainable projects intended to put skills learned into action.
“They’re (participants) creating a network from the ground up,” Walen said. “It’s really a powerful networking tool. Their (Leadership Eastside) programs brings people together. They convene some great minds around concrete problems that need to be solved.” The group also allows the Eastside mayors a chance to interact and discuss issues that impact the various cities east of Lake Washington. “If you look across the lake at Seattle, their population is about the same as the entire Eastside. It’s important for us to work together, especially because of the way we interlock as cities,” said Balducci. Mayors across the Eastside have been trying to work together more in recent years, Balducci said. In the past, a handful of people had shied away from working collaborately and the cities tended to see each other as competition. When she was first selected to be mayor of Bellevue, Balducci received a call from Marchione asking her to help coordinate a relationship between theirs and other Eastside cities, she recalled. “The most pressing issues on the Eastside are managing growth, building infrastructure and addressing homelessness,” Marchione said. “These are all regional issues and not confined to one city. We need participants that can see the big picture and [Leadership Eastside] produces those graduates.” Now, the ten Eastside mayors meet monthly for a lunch to catch up on their individual operations and potential collaborations. “At first it was information sharing, but it’s sort of grown into working together on different projects,” Balducci said.
Three nominated to replace Hunter in 48th District King County Democrats selected attorney Patty Kuderer, Redmond City Councilmember Kim Allen and real estate broker Santiago Ramos as its nominees to fill the vacancy for state Rep. Position 1 in the 48th Legislative District. The office came open when Ross Hunter resigned the seat to head the Washington State Department of Early Learning. The final choice will be made by the
Metropolitan King County Council within the next 60 days. The three names were chosen Wednesday by a special nominating caucus of the King County Democrats, consisting of the 39 elected and appointed Democratic PCOs of the 48th District. All 39 PCOs showed up in person to participate in the nominating caucus.

To the editor Bellevue’s $25 alarm fee looks like a tax
Over the past 11 years, we’ve had two false alarms with the alarm system at our house - one because of our dog, and one because we forgot to lock our backdoor which then opened in the wind. Regarding the new False Alarm Management Program that Bellevue is implementing, I completely understand the purpose and I’m also OK with the fine for having a false alarm, since it takes our police officers away from other important duties. However, what I don’t agree with is the $25 annual “registration fee” for this program. Basically, this $25 fee is a tax on homeowners who have alarms, nothing more, nothing less. As a result, I’m very curious if this fee/tax was implemented using the same protocols that our local government is required to follow for any other tax that they want to implement. After all, a tax by any other name is still a tax.

Petty one-upmanship again on display
Regarding Don Davidson’s political ad in last week’s Reporter, it is disappointing to see, once again, the petty one-upmanship that so often accompanies these races. Davidson makes a point about the source of his political donations compared to those of his competitor, John Chelminiak, and points us to the PDC’s website for confirmation. I’d like to remind him that two years ago Bellevue residents were appalled by candidates taking in Republic Services’ donations, despite our council voting on a trash contract at the time. (Guess who got the contract.) I’ve been on the PDC site. It tells me that this year $300 from Republic Services have paid - ironically enough - for a good few of Davidson’s plastic signs that currently litter our streets. I see that as a big insult to this city’s voters — one that puts his spurious claims well into perspective. My message to all candidates is to keep it clean, keep it about city policy and keep it about the future of Bellevue. And pick up your dirty signs after you. This year, we’ll be keeping a much closer eye on you than perhaps you’ve had in the past.

Give every child a fair shot at success BY SEN. STEVE LITZOW AND REP. RUTH KAGI

alf of Washington’s children are set up to fail. On the first day of kindergarten, they’re behind on math and language and don’t have the social and emotional skills to succeed. These kids are starting a lifelong race 20 yards behind. Most never catch up. If you’re a mom or dad, a business owner or a taxpayer, you should care. Because when children fail, we all pay the price. Children who drop out of school, do drugs and end up in a life of crime cost taxpayers, on STEVE LITZOW average, $2.5 million each. That money could be spent making college affordable or fixing our schools. It’s as simple as pay now, or pay a lot more RUTH KAGI later. The good news is, we have a solution: high quality early learning. Research shows that children who participate in high quality early learning have lower rates of: special education placement, grade repetition, obesity and teen pregnancy, abuse and neglect and juvenile detention. They also have higher test scores and higher rates of high school graduation. Scientists say 92 percent of a child’s
brain is developed by age five, before he or she sets foot in a kindergarten classroom. Washington has an ethical imperative to prepare all students to compete in the 21st-century job market and fully participate in democracy. With the legislature under a constitutional obligation to fully fund K-12 education, we cannot ignore highly effective programs that move children toward higher student achievement. Because we take our duty to the entire educational continuum – early learning, K-12 and higher education - so seriously, we must invest in both high-quality early learning and our K-12 schools. If we continue adding billions more dollars into our K-12 system without ensuring our children are ready to learn when they arrive, everyone loses. We’ll have a very expensive K-12 system and still over half our children will be set-up to fail. We have an obligation to ensure every child – even children who are victims of abuse, neglect or poverty — have the opportunity to succeed. That’s why we sponsored the bipartisan Early Start Act - a comprehensive childcare and early learning quality improvement plan. Early learning helps kids be ready on that first day of kindergarten and puts them on a path to success. Lawmakers also have an obligation to taxpayers. We know every tax dollar must be spent as wisely as possible. And early learning has the highest return on investment of any education - between $4-$17 back for every dollar spent. Yet, our state currently
spends less than one cent of every tax dollar received on early learning. Albert Einstein said, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.” If we want different results, we must change our spending. We must invest in high quality early learning. If world-class brain research and many economic studies do not convince you, consider the real-world experience of those who see the need firsthand. Law enforcement, the business community and military leaders agree that investing in high-quality childcare & early learning is the most effective step we can take to prevent crime, ensure a thriving economy and protect our national security. This year's passage of the Early Start Act along with a new budget that adds $159 million for early learning and care with 1,600 more slots for the state’s Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program - the largest early learning increase in state history - will bring the high quality programs that we know work, to all of Washington’s childcare centers and preschools. A strong start for children leads to more successful schools, stronger families, more self-reliant adults and safer communities. WIAA reveals investigators, little else for football probe BY ALLISON DEANGELIS BELLEVUE REPORTER
Two former federal prosecutors will conduct the fact-finding investigation into the Bellevue High School football program, the WIAA announced on Sept. 15. The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) announced that Carl Blackstone and Bob Westinghouse of Yarmuth Wilsdon PLLC will conduct the investigation into allegations made against the football team and the Academic Institute in Bellevue. “Well, all that I’m in the position to tell you that the WIAA has made it crystal clear that they want a fair, reasonable and thorough investigation,” Westinghouse told the Reporter. “They want to level the playing field for high school activities.” The former federal prosecutors with the United States Department of Justice have more than 50 combined years experience in investigating, according to a WIAA press release. The two men head Yarmuth Wilsdon’s white collar defense and internal investigations practice group. Most recently, Blackstone and Westinghouse worked for the Seattle and Tacoma Public Schools as internal investigators. “Blackstone and Westinghouse are experienced in this area with their independent in-depth, fair and thorough reviews,” WIAA Executive Director Mike Colbrese said in a press release. In late August, Bellevue High School requested that the association provide a fact-finding of alleged violations. Hiring fact-finders is the next step in the WIAA process for addressing potential violations as set forth by the WIAA membership.

Outside of the announcement of the investigation and Blackstone and Westinghouse’s hiring, little information has been made available by the WIAA about the proceedings of fact-finding investigations. A fact-finding investigation is the fourth step in investigating alleged rule infractions, and follows an initial investigation by the WIAA and communication with the offending school, according to the WIAA Handbook. As the Reporter previously reported, the WIAA previously investigated charges that the Bellevue program had violated recruiting and offseason training rules and sanctioned Bellevue High School. How the previous events relate to the current factfinding investigation is unknown. A WIAA representatives declined to comment. The WIAA staff does not initiate investigations. Instead, a member school or league must request a review that includes the perceived violation and evidence. When asked by the Reporter what the penalties are if a school is found not to have reported violations, WIAA spokesperson Conor Laffey said that due to the many hypothetical scenarios that could necessitate a fact-finding mission, he could not be more specific and that the association would not be commenting further. Similarly, when asked what a fact-finding investigation entails, Laffey declined to comment. In their initial response to reports concerning the Bellevue High School football team, the association released a statement with a brief outline of the proceedings to come. After an investigation is completed, the league may accept the findings or place further sanctions on that school, which the school may appeal to the WIAA District and ultimately to the WIAA Board. If the league or the WIAA District is not comfortable with the initial findings reported by the school, either entity may request that the WIAA investigate the allegations. During their investigation, Blackstone and Westinghouse will be looking at the WIAA rules and regulations,
but will also be attempting to gather facts and determine what evidence substantiates or refutes the allegations made against the Bellevue football program, Westinghouse said. “They make the final determination, we find the facts,” he said. The association has previously conducted investigations into two Washington schools this year, but declined to name the schools, the circumstances of the proceedings or any other information. However, WIAA Executive Board meeting minutes show that Inglemoor High School’s basketball team was handed a $500 fine for using 13 players during the regional basketball tournament, the girls basketball roster limit and WIAA handbook rule 18.3.0 at the regional and state level. Also former Head Coach John Augustavo was placed on suspension for the first two varsity games of the 2015-16 basketball season. As was previously reported by the Bothell/Kenmore Reporter, a sister paper of the Bellevue Reporter, the Bothell School District declined to renew Augustavo’s contract weeks later. Meeting minutes also revealed a potential violation in District 4, which covers Southwestern Washington. There was no further information on that possible violation or any measures taken. Neither the WIAA nor Blackstone and Westinghouse have set a timeline for the fact-finding investigation, according to Westinghouse. That being said, both parties are committed to expediting the work, but plan on being as thorough as the facts require, he said.

One of two alleged burglars attempting to rob a home on 123rd Avenue Northeast was tracked down and apprehended by one of the Bellevue Police’s K-9 units in the morning on Sept. 10. The suspect, a 25-year-old Bellevue resident, later admitted to committing a dozen different vehicle prowls in the area overnight. At approximately 4:56 a.m., Bellevue Police responded to a report of a burglary in progress in the 5400 block of 123rd Avenue Southeast. The homeowner at the at location called 911 to report two unknown suspects in their garage. K-9 Roc and his handler, Officer Brad Knudtsen, were part of the response team. Roc tracked one of the suspects to the 12100 block of Southeast 60th Street and found
the suspect hiding in some bushes. After the suspect refused to surrender, Roc was sent in to apprehend him. The man was later treated for a dog bite received during his arrest. The Bellevue Police have identified a second suspect in the early morning burglary, but currently still following up on leads and have yet to locate the suspect and make an arrest. Roc was the first Bellevue Police dog purchased by the Bellevue Police Foundation. The department has three dogs that are trained in tracking, criminal apprehension and narcotics detection. Kemper Development will receive a $526 million loan to help finance its 1.5 million-square-foot expansion of the Bellevue Collection in downtown Bellevue. The money will come from the credit unit of the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, which invests in diverse types of private real estate. The loan was announced Sept. 10. The board has
invested more than $5 billion Canadian dollars into commercial real estate credit transactions since being founded in 2010, according to a press release. The Lincoln Square Expansion broke ground a year ago. It will consist of a 41-story multi family/W Hotel tower, a 31-story Class A office tower and a threelevel retail podium, which will be anchored by a luxury theatre and chef-driven restaurants. The hippie era, in a modern light ‘Counter Couture’ now open at the Bellevue Arts Museum BY ALLISON DEANGELIS BELLEVUE REPORTER
Embroidered shirts, patchwork pants, beaded dresses galore fill the exhibit space for ‘Counter Couture’, a new exhibit at the Bellevue Arts Museum that is meant to capture the energy and character of the 1960s and 1970s through fashion. For curator Michael Cepress, the exhibit has been about 15 years in the making. While in high school, the artist and designer discovered the book, ‘Native Funk and Flash’, from which much of the exhibit draws inspiration.
“That book completely changed me,” he said. “It made me realize that clothing isn’t just a simple thing, but an expression of so much more, and that we can have lots of creative fun with clothing.” Over time, Cepress tracked down the designers featured in the book and exhibit, in some cases helping them dig through storage bins for the clothing items now on display at the Bellevue Arts Museum. The pieces are often one of a kind, wildly colored, intricate and bold. The clothing articles embody a variety of cultural influences, from Middle Eastern to Native American to Japanese. Although one museum-goer could be overheard comparing a handmade patchwork dress to something she had seen in Free People, the pieces in ‘Counter
erism of the American Dream. “What’s most relative to that culture today is that impulse of taking what you’re interested in, taking wherever you’re at sexually, spiritually, emotionally and finding a way to bring that into your wardrobe and show that in how you dress,” said Cepress. In that way, ‘Counter-Couture’ is interesting to view through the modern lens, in which political correctness and fast fashion have changed the way Americans approach clothing. There is little daring, save perhaps sexually, about the clothing that fills Americans’ closets nowadays before getting thrown out next season. But, it’s all mass produced, and it doesn’t have the soulfullness that these pieces from the 60s have,” he said. A Sound Transit bus crashed on Bellevue Way on Sept. 16 after the driver lost consciousness, sending the bus up onto a curb and into an apartment building, according to officials. "There was significant damage to the bus but luckily no passengers or pedestrians were injured. The driver was the only patient and was transported to Overlake Hospital for precautionary reasons only," according to Bellevue Fire spokesperson Ryan Armstrong. The crash caused the closure of Bellevue Way from Main to Northeast Fourth Street. None of the dozens of passengers onboard at the time were injured, nor were any bystanders located in the LensCrafters or other businesses that occupy the ground floor of the apartment building.

In a letter police found in Ku’s apartment, Ku blamed the children’s father for trying to control them and asked him to leave them alone. After years of instability preceding and during the divorce, the two boys were settling in and had built friendships through their extracurricular activities, school and hobbies. Isaac Cook attended his first soccer practice of the year just prior to his abduction, and Sage Cook had told his stepmother he planned to audition for the school play. “This was going to give them a solid base that they had lacked during the divorce years,” Helen said. “Everything was
www.bellevuereporter.com just coming together, and suddenly they were just ripped from that.” In the weeks since their abduction, the Cook’s lives have hobbled on. The International School Robotics team that Sage Cook was a part of had their first meeting of the year, a classmate wrote in a letter to the elder Cook brother. “All of us at school really miss you,” the teenager wrote. “We’re all trying our best to keep being happy and live our lives, though every once in a while, we start talking about you and get really sad.” In another letter, Sage’s friend Thomas Shen writes that everyone is depressed that he isn’t at school. “You’ve missed great moments and I would love to share them with you...By the way, I’ll help you catch up every step of the way, especially in school. Principal Tara Grey jointly sent a letter to parents at each school urging parents to reach out to school staff if their children are having difficulty dealing with the disappearance of their classmates. “In my official meeting with teachers to share this news, I made sure that they knew that our counselor was available for any students who may have heard of the situation,” Grey told the Reporter. The Cook’s are still working to find their sons and bring them home. David and Helen Cook have noticed the drop-off in media attention surrounding the boys’ disappearance, and David has seen traffic on the “Help find Isaac and Sage Cook” Facebook page drop from 80,000 hits daily in the first days after it was established to 25,000 hits per day, he said. “The word is fading now – we’re trying really hard to trying to keep the boys pictures in front of people and not let the search die down,” he said. Working with law enforcement in two states has also been a challenge. While the boys were last seen in California, an arrest warrant for custodial interference issued for Ku in Washington means that the Bellevue Police Department has taken the reins on the investigation and search. “I think also the fact that the incident is split between two jurisdictions has been challenging. That type of coordination, they’re struggling with it,” said Helen, adding that both law enforcement groups clearly have the boys’ best interests at heart. “There’s this sense that nobody’s really on it, driving it. And we’re not the only family in this situation out there.” The Cooks are offering a $25,000 reward for information that helps lead to the boys’ return. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Bellevue Police Department.

under the state Constitution and therefore cannot receive public funding. “The decision not only invalidates Initiative 1240, but also unnecessarily calls into question the constitutionality of a wide range of other state educational programs,” the statement said. “These important programs range from Running Start to Washington State Skills Centers that provide career and technical education to high school students.” Under the state constitution, programs like Running Start are not considered “common schools” because they do not have elected school boards. Despite the threat to Running Start programs throughout the state, Bellevue College’s program is considered safe, as it reportedly does not receive state funding. “Actually, Bellevue College does not receive funding from the state from the Running Start program, so this will not impact us,” said Bellevue College’s Vice President of Institutional Advancement Gayle Barge. Initiative 1240 passed with 50.7 percent of the vote in 2012, making Washington the 42nd state to approve charter schools. The measure provided for the opening of as many as 40 charter schools within five years. The first opened last fall. This school year, eight more have opened, with classes beginning over the past few weeks. The schools, located in Seattle, Tacoma, Kent,
Highline and Spokane, are committed to remaining open for the year, even if that means relying on public donations, according to Randy Dorn, the state superintendent of public instruction. “As we wait for a final judgment by the courts, I’m committed to ensuring that the education of the nearly 1,200 children enrolled in approved charter schools is not interrupted,” he said. His office will work with educators across the state, including school district leaders, to help assure that charter school students will continue to receive appropriate education,” wrote state Superintendent of Public Instruction Randy Dorn in a public letter. The charter school law was challenged by the League of Women Voter of Washington, the Washington Education Association, the Washington Association of School Administrators and others. The plaintiffs argued that the lack of local elected governing bodies and the funding implications violated state law. In her majority opinion, Chief Justice Barbara Madsen cited precedent from 1909 in ruling that charter schools are not common schools because they are controlled by a charter school board — not by local voters. She further rebuffed an argument from the state that the charter schools could be paid for from the general fund rather than money specifically intended for public schools, because the state doesn’t segregate the funds and thus doesn’t have a way to ensure restricted money isn’t spent on charter schools. Attorney General Ferguson previously announced that he would file a motion to challenge the ruling by Sept. 24.

Wolverines lose season opener against Bishop Gorman BY SHAUN SCOTT BELLEVUE REPORTER
In a matchup between two of the most wellknown high school football programs in the nation, the Bishop Gorman Gaels (Las Vegas) reigned supreme against the Bellevue Wolverines. The Gaels delivered a 35-7 victory against the Wolverines in front of a packed house on Sept. 11 at Bellevue Memorial Stadium. The Gaels improved their overall record to 3-0 while Bellevue dropped to 0-1. Bishop Gorman running back Biaggio Walsh had 15 carries for 164 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Walsh’s 37-yard touchdown run with 4:48 left in the first quarter gave his team a 14-0 lead. Walsh also scored on a 1-yard touchdown run on the first drive of the game, giving the Gaels an early 7-0 lead. Bellevue assistant coach Rick Brown said Walsh was a tough running back to slow down. “He is a tough runner and he ran hard. It was the first game of the season and we just couldn’t corral him,” Brown said. Bellevue running back Ercle Terrell agreed wholeheartedly with Brown’s sentiment. “He is a beast,” Terrell said of Walsh. “He runs downhill and he’s a good player.” Turnovers derailed the Wolverines opportunities on offense in the first half. Because of Bishop Gorman’s ball control offense, the Wolverines had just four offensive possessions in
the first 24 minutes of play. Bellevue turned the ball over on downs after a failed fake punt on their first possession. On their second and third possessions, they lost fumbles and time expired on their fourth and final possession of the first half deep in Bishop Gorman territory. Terrell, who rushed for a team-high 165 yards in the loss for the Wolverines, said his squad will rebound from the loss. “We just got to finish games. We had a lot of mistakes but we can pick up on it and just continue with our success,” Terrell said. “Much respect to them, they came out and played a good game.” Bishop Gorman head coach Kenny Sanchez was thrilled to see his team control the line of scrimmage and improve to 3-0 on the season. “This is the third game in a row where we have had over 120 to 130 yards rushing. Give credit to those big boys (offensive line) up front. They have been fighting for three weeks now against three out-of-state teams and they have been playing hard,” Sanchez said. “This was a great high school football game. It was a great atmosphere and it never gets old.” The head coach was also impressed with Walsh’s electric performance against Bellevue. “He is a great football player, a great running back and a great team player,” Sanchez said of Walsh. “We’re happy for him.” Bellevue will face the Mercer Island Islanders in their second regular season game at 7 p.m. today in Mercer Island.

Homeward bound BY SHAUN SCOTT BELLEVUE REPORTER
A minor league baseball player and 2010 Skyline graduate got the call of a lifetime on the final day of July: Righthanded pitcher Adrian Sampson, 23, was traded to the Tacoma Rainiers. Sampson was drafted in his sophomore year at Bellevue College to play for the Pittsburgh Pirates organization, and specifically played for the AAA affiliate the Indianapolis Indians. Now, he’s moved across the country to be back on the West Coast, about an hour from his hometown school, Skyline High. He had six appearances as a starting pitcher for the Rainiers in the 2015 season. “It’s been fantastic,” Sampson said in late August. “Having family and friends come out to every game is great. I was refreshed when I came here. Seeing them in the stands is tremendous.” He admitted to having mixed emotions after getting the call he would be traded to the Seattle Mariners organization’s minor league team. “We had a baseball family over there in Pittsburgh. I played with those guys for four years. Obviously that is the hardest part. You spend countless hours with your teammates every day,” Sampson said. “When I heard I was being traded to the Seattle Mariners my heart
almost stopped. If there was one organization out there I would had liked to be traded to, this was it for sure.” Sampson, who pitched for the Bellevue Bulldogs in 2011 and 2012 before being drafted in the fifth round of the 2012 MLB June Amateur Draft, credits the college’s baseball coach, Mark Yoshino, for molding him into the pitcher he is today. “Yosh was definitely my second father figure to me. He sat me down and taught me the art of pitching,” Sampson said. “He just had so many uncharacteristic ways of teaching, and it was just outstanding. The work he puts in is incredible. He is always putting in 12to 14-hour days and is just an unbelievable coach.” Sampson recorded a 2-4 overall record in six starts since being acquired by the Rainiers. He said his breaking ball is his best pitch, but he feels confident in his fastball as well as a newly developed change-up. “You got to get guys out with the fastball if you want to pitch in the big leagues,” he said. “The biggest pitch I learned about three years ago was the change-up. With the outcome of a gridiron matchup between the Sammamish Totems and Foster Bulldogs football teams hanging in the balance, Sammamish Head Coach Todd Craig put the game in the hands of his team’s new starting signal caller. The Totems, who trailed the Bulldogs 29-28, had just scored on a touchdown toss from junior quarterback
Kekoa Loschky with less than a minute left in regulation. Craig decided to go for the two-point conversion and the win instead of potentially tying the game with an extra point. The plan worked to perfection. Loschky successfully converted the two-point conversion with a quarterback sneak up the middle and the Totems left Tukwila with a dramatic 30-29 win on Sept. 11. “We just put all of our biggest lineman at guard and at center and the
coaches just called a quarterback sneak on down,” Loschky said. Loschky, who finished the game with two touchdown passes as well as the game-winning two points, said he could feel the support of his teammates in his first ever varsity start at the quarterback. The 5-foot, 9-inch, 145-pounder previously played the wide receiver position. “It was definitely a good feeling to show them that I could do it. I could tell they all believed in me,” he said.
