Kitsap County residents who died in uniform during World War II T he Path of Freedom memorial at Bremerton High School’s Memorial Stadium honors all Kitsap County residents killed in action in all wars. The individual names are etched in huge granite slabs, as are the names of 13 Medal of Honor recipients from Kitsap County. The Bremerton High School Associated Student Body of 1946-47 raised $39,562 to build Memorial Stadium, to honor those who fought in World War II. In 2007, the Semancik Foundation expanded the project by creating a personalized veterans’ memorial and flag plaza in the stadium, called “The Path of Freedom.” The center stone is inscribed with the logos of the seven branches of our military and the words, “For those who have given life, limb and soul, so we might enjoy our freedom.” Contributed / Semancik Foundation Hugh D. SIGNIFICANT DUTY STATIONS OR DEPLOYMENTS DURING THE WAR: Stationed in Seattle and San Francisco; served onboard the USS Andromeda (AKA-15) and the SS Alcoa Patriot (U.S. Naval Armed Guard). Carried combat equipment to invasion-staging
bases and beach heads. The ships also brought wounded soldiers and Marines home. Saw action in the Battle of Okinawa onboard the Andromeda, and the Battle of Leyte Gulf on the Alcoa Patriot. POST-WAR CAREER: Graduated from Western Washington University and Columbia University; served for 30 years as a teacher, school counselor, principal, and assistant superintendent in the Bellevue School District.
