W
hen fire surrounded their home near Chelan last month, Avé and Drew Dover packed their cars to evacuate, but in an effort to save their property, Drew began clearing fire lines with his tractor while the flames encroached. As the situation grew more dire — no electricity or water, thick smoke in the air and the fire advancing — Drew, a former Green Beret and registered nurse, insisted on staying. Unwilling to leave her husband behind, Avé said she had resolved that they would remain and fight the fire with one lone neighbor. As they gathered in the driveway, help arrived without warning, as a Vashon Island Fire & Rescue (VIFR) vehicle pulled in. “I was shocked to see
‘Vashon Island’ on the truck,” Avé recounted by phone last weekend. “It was like a little miracle — if not a big miracle — to see the Vashon truck all the way at our ranch.” The team included two island firefighters, Brett Kranjcevich and Wesley Paulsen, and a third firefighter from Bothell. They were in the area as part of a South King County Strike Team mobilized by the state to protect homes and other structures. The group’s arrival on the Dovers’ doorstep began with a text message, according to Kate Davidson, one of the Dovers’ two daughters living on Vashon. The five Dover siblings had been sending worried messages back and forth as the Chelan-area fires raged and none of them could reach their parents, she said. As the number of young people in the United States diagnosed with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is on the rise, three island artists are participating in a national campaign to stem the tide of this tenacious but mostly preventable epidemic. Leah Mann and Ela Lamblin — the husband-and-wife team behind the performance art of Lelavision — and composer Jason Staczek are creating a live performance and video aimed at education and prevention. With funding coming from the Elton John AIDS Foundation and a Kickstarter campaign that will begin next week, the works are slated to premier on World AIDS Day in December. “It’s all so preventable,” Mann said, noting that unprotected sex continues to be the leading cause of HIV infection. “We have to be able to normalize these conversations and lessen the stigma for young people.” Locally, King County has experienced a decrease in new youth (specified as ages 13 to 24) diagnoses, with 33 in 2013, down from 42 in 2012 and below 40 for the first time in over five years. But this is an anomaly compared to the national statistics. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 9,961 youth were diagnosed with HIV in the United States in 2013. More than 8,000 of those cases occurred in those aged 20 to 24 — the highest number of HIV diagnoses of any age group. At the end of 2012, it was estimated that 62,400 youth in this country were living with HIV, and over half of them were undiagnosed. With the highest increases seen across the southern states, the Elton John AIDS Foundation chose to partner with the Community Foundation of Greater Atlanta (CFGA) to fund youth-oriented intervention programs, some of which will have a national reach. That’s where Mann comes in. In January, the CFGA dispersed some of the money it received from the Elton John foundation to a youth outreach organization called Moving in the Spirit — a program that integrates dance instruction with performance, leadership and mentoring opportunities for kids ages 3 through 18 in the Atlanta area. Mann co-founded the program over 20 years ago and is still involved as its artistic director emeritus. “They basically commissioned a (performance) work as an intervention piece,” she said. “Something that could travel and speak directly to young people. So they called me.” The challenge was a steep one, but Mann was undeterred. Just one month into the project, however, her own nephew died of heart failure resulting from undiagnosed AIDS. “It came as a total shock,” she said. “He was a young, SEE HIV, 18

Vashon property valuations have risen for the third straight year, according to the King County Assessor’s Office, but they are still below the prerecession levels. Last year island home values increased by nearly 7 percent, though individual properties vary. Currently, the average value of residential properties on Vashon is $449,900, compared to $421,400 last year. In 2008, at the real estate peak, island home values

were $531,300. Phillip Sit, a spokesman in the assessor’s office, said nearly all residential areas in King County saw increased values in 2014, but few rose to 2008 values. The new property values are determined by analyzing recent sales of comparable properties in the same area as

Sit noted that many property owners erroneously believe that their property taxes will go up the same amount as their home value. This is not the case. On Vashon, most homeowners will not see significant changes in their property taxes, as most agencies that levy property taxes can collect only a set amount each year. In Washington, Sit added, taxing districts are held to a 1 percent annual increase in property tax revenue, unless voters approve special levies. Throughout the county, property taxes increased by about 4 percent in 2015. Remnants of pier to be removed from natural area On Thursday, the King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks (DNRP) will begin working to remove the remnants of a concrete pier on the southeast shoreline of Maury Island. Now included in the Maury Island Natural Area, the pier was once part of the Glacier gravel mine site. The project is slated to take about 15 days, during which time the 57- by 25-foot section of concrete as well as any material that may have been placed inside the covered portion of the old pier will be excavated and hauled away. County officials say that approximately 111 cubic yards of concrete will be removed and taken to an off-island concrete recycling facility. Potentially, 128 cubic yards of fill will also be taken; however, if the material within the pier is native to the beach, then it will not be removed.
The DNRP’s goal is to restore natural beach-forming processes and improve the nearshore habitat of the area. Structures like piers can alter the physical characteristics of the nearshore, by changing processes such as sediment transport, wave energy and light penetration — all of which have an impact on plant and animal life such as eel grass and forage fish, both critical components of our local ecosystem and marine life food chain. Officials say the removal of the pier should help restore natural beach-forming processes to a 60- by 25-foot area of the shore. Work will take place from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, from Thursday, Sept. 3 through Friday, Sept. 18. — Sarah Low

Sheriff’s office investigates harassment incidents
Vashon Community Care looks to islanders for support By SUSAN RIEMER For The Beachcomber
Vashon Community Care is looking to raise $300,000 by year’s end and has recently launched a campaign to bring in the needed funds. Verna Everitt, the executive director of the Vashon Community Care Foundation, is leading the effort, which she is calling At Home on Vashon. “My message to the community is imagine if Vashon Community Care (VCC) was not here,” she said. “So many residents have lived here all their lives, and they reached this time in their life when they need care.” Raising funds at VCC is a continual effort, and many islanders are likely familiar with the challenges the center faces as a nonprofit, community-owned facility. At the heart of the financial struggle, Everitt said, is that the reimbursement rate of Medicaid, which pays medical costs for people with limited income and resources, has been stagnant since 2007, while costs have risen. Now at VCC, Medicaid covers just 49 percent of the cost of care for residents in assisted living and 70 percent in the skilled nursing facility, Everitt said. The agency cannot bill for the balance of the costs, but must cover the unmet expenses in other ways. Typically, the center has about a 50-50 split in the percent of center residents who pay privately and those who are covered through Medicaid, she said. For both philosophical and pragmatic reasons, the center remains committed to serving those
who have exhausted their means while living there. “Even if we could only accept private pay, we would collapse given the demographics of the island,” she said. “We need those Medicaid patients as much as they need us. ... Together all of run this five-star institution. While the center hopes to raise $500,000 this year, the budget deficit is actually over $1 million, said Truman O’Brien, the foundation president. Income from the center’s rehabilitation program and careful management of the budget has cut that figure in half, he added. So far this year, Everitt said, they have raised $200,000 and are aiming to bring in the remaining $300,000 in the coming months. “People on the island have been very, very generous,” O’Brien said, noting he is optimistic the community will step forward again. In addition to raising funds from the community, Everitt said she is trying to find grant money, but there is little available. The center’s largest supporter, she noted, is Granny’s Attic, which provided close to $70,000 last year. Thriftway is also generous, she added, providing $500 from tip jars every month. O’Brien likens the situation at VCC to the Vashon schools, with a foundation that raises funds because of insufficient government funding. Barring an unexpected change at that level, VCC will look to the community — and beyond — to house the island’s elders. ‘We are always going to raise money,” he said.

The King County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an incident that occurred about 1:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 23. According to King County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Jason Stanley, a 22-year-old black male victim reported that he was walking home from work in downtown Vashon, when a vehicle swerved toward him as if to run him off the road. He said it later came back, and one of the passengers swung at him with a baseball bat. The victim returned to work after calling 911. Deputies were on another call, so it took some time to get to the victim. In the mean time, dispatch tried calling to advise him of the delays, but they could not get though because his phone was unable to accept calls. He decided to walk home after some time had passed and took a short cut but heard somebody shout a racial slur and heard what he thought were gunshots. The case is being investigated further by detectives. If anyone has information about this incident, they should contact the sheriff’s office at 296-3311.

Vashon Island: Better than a trip to France
It is time for public input on school athletic facilities
As fall approaches, I’m working hard to keep our big summer vacation front of mind. We went to France, and o mon Dieu! Many times during our trip I concluded that the French deserve to be snotty, since everything is better there. Other times I would think, this is crazy, we would never put up with this nonsense. Some contrasts were obvious: They have the Eiffel Tower; we have Monument Road. They have the beaches of Normandy; we have KVI. They have public transportation and government. Unlike Vashon, French children are raised on wheat, blood, milk fat derivatives, wine and cigarettes. It is illegal to be gluten or lactose intolerant, and the idea that you wouldn’t want to eat what we might call “mixed liver loaf” inspires looks of confusion and pity. Where we have militant bike activists in competitive spandex and extra cranial protection, they have 50,000 three-gear granny bikes installed throughout the city, rented for less than $1.50/day by Parisians in suits and skirts and no helmets, weaving in and out of traffic, through red lights, while smoking and talking on their cell phones. We gawked in wonder, since not one aspect of that image could happen here. It was an affront to everything we hold dear regarding litigation. Being from King County, we were amazed and giddy at the unregulatedness of it all — it felt so dirty! Meanwhile, there seemed to be tons of unspoken rules in beach etiquette. In Brittany, we unwittingly squatted in pre-paid beach tent #6 in the fancy vacation town of Dinnard, while the fancy Parisian physician was (likely)
The Vashon Island School Board has had several discussions about what the district should seek in its next bond measure for the high school campus. It’s now time to pull the public into this discussion. Should the district opt for a bare-bones measure, focused solely on replacing its wholly inadequate track? Or should it also address shortages in recreational space and ask voters to pay for a new gym? Does a synthetic field make more sense than a grass field? Should the old but serviceable bleachers be replaced by a grandstand? And what should come of Building F, the brick structure built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Roosevelt Administration? Foundational to all of this is the hardest question of all: What do voters believe they can afford? Vashon voters already backed a $48 million bond measure to build a new high school. Board member Bob Hennessey talks about how each generation needs to carry its civic weight when it comes to our public schools. How much more weight should this current generation of taxpayers be asked to carry? At the board’s last planning session, the members tackled some of these issues, with three of them saying they preferred a $25 million measure — the low end of the options district officials and architects had put before them. It was a strong stance: Superintendent Michael Soltman clearly wanted the board to endorse a more ambitious proposal. But this dynamic and sometimes tense conversation between board members and district officials is only part of the story. The voices still unheard are those of voters. Once the board has a proposal in hand, it plans to hold some forums, where islanders can see the options, ask questions and voice their opinions. Critical to the success of these discussions will be two issues: the participation of islanders with a range of opinions and the board listening fully and well to what they’re saying. The fact is, the board has already held meetings about the district’s facility needs with so-called “stakeholders” — coaches and league directors who use the gym and fields on a regular basis. But as board member Dan Chasan recently noted, those folks aren’t stakeholders, they’re people with vested interests. The stakeholders are all the island’s taxpayers. The board was thoughtful and circumspect at the last planning session, voicing a preference for a modest approach in the face of pressure to do more. What’s not clear is if this approach will be modest enough on an island that’s been hesitant to embrace improved athletic facilities. It’s now time for the next step. It’s time for islanders to speak up and for the board to listen. Only then will the board be able to craft a package that might get over a high hurdle — the 60 percent supermajority required in bond measures.
ISLAND WAYS By KEVIN JOYCE getting a crepe. Admittedly, it was an ugly American mistake. We were removed like pesky flies, but then managed to spread our towels 6 inches into our neighbor’s sand perimeter, at which point the entire beach went silent and glared at us. Ok, I’m exaggerating. But imagine that happening at Lisabuela, or for that matter, imagine a French tourist at Lisabuela. I can see them wandering into a Vashon beach potluck, being handed a veggie burger, then being too polite to remark on how it really tastes, or how they were dying inside. Then they’d drive around the island, which is really not much different from the French countryside. Then again, their roads change names every couple blocks, have no logic to their one ways, and in the starkest contrast of all, they don’t seem to do road repair, nor have anything like our rabid enthusiasm for traffic cones. This distinction was made most clear when we arrived home to the quadruple traffic bypass on the north-end dock. We jetlag-lugged our bags to a car whose location I couldn’t remember on a hill far, far away, and I (snottily) thought: If this were done to the French, they would block the traffic with their tractors, drink wine, gesticulate and throw tomatoes. We should totally do that. One afternoon I wanted to go to a café to, you know, drink wine, read a novel, smoke a cigarette

Coyotes
Electric wires prevent attacks I was sad to hear of the loss of pets and livestock attributed to the coyotes. (“Coyote reports rise, group aims to educate islanders,” Aug. 26) However, I thought I should share with folks what we have done on our property on Wax Orchard. We
have sheep and chickens and have had a history of losses of chickens from raccoons and threats to our sheep from dog packs that occasionally roam around. We tried everything and finally put in electric wires around our fencing. There are two electric wires, one above the other, at just the right height to be unavoidable to a dog or coyote trying to dig under

and be bohemian. I found the perfect spot, and right behind me was a swarthy French guy in his 20s with a lip ring, quietly singing a depressing song with a guitar and smoking. Bonanza! I motioned to the spot next to him, he shrugged and made a “pffft” sound, which is Parisian for pretty much everything. I sat down and said, “Parlez vous anglais?” and he went “pfft” again. I explained that I was from a small, sparsely-inhabited island in the heavily wooded remote western frontier of America, which could only be reached by boat. He blinked a few times, as if waiting for more. I asked for a cigarette. He “pfft”ed. I asked him to play a song, and he explained that he would have to see if the muse came to him. I struggled with the cigarette; he tinkled the strings with excruciating quietness; I leaned in to try and hear his brilliance, and then he turned to me and said, “It’s not coming.” It was an awesome moment, even though for him it was probably like a 50-year-old Kansas diaper salesman had put him through a deeply painful life experience. But I’d so like to return the favor. So I say come, you French cheese makers and pig product eaters. Come, you wordy philosophers and moody artists: Come to our island, where we have all this and more to rival yours. You’ve never seen trees like ours, and once in your life, you should experience the thrill of ordering a skinny triple soy caramel split shot flan latte. You might just swoon.

the fence or jump over it. That works. We also have two electric wires around the chicken yard that can’t be avoided by raccoons trying to climb the fence or go under it. Branches can fall against the wires, or shrubs can grow up around them, which causes them to short out, so we monitor them daily. I check every day to see that the fences are on and working. It takes just a couple of minutes. We hear the coyotes from our house sometimes, but we don’t worry. There are power outages, but they rarely last long, and we always check to be sure the electric wire is back on. We do have a dog, and she knows enough to leave those wires alone. — Emma Amiad
Our behavior will help keep coyotes wild I appreciated the article on Coyotes in last week’s paper. However, I was deeply disappointed that the article didn’t state what to specifically do if one is sighted (other than to report it), nor did it state that we should not feed them. Coyotes are wild and must remain so. We need to scare them away by shouting, waiving our arms and throwing rocks at them. Loud noise makers can help as well. They need to fear humans. Fifty-three coyote/human attacks took place in California between 1988 and

1997. There have also been attacks in Washington. Most of this stems from people feeding them. They lose their fear and look to humans as a source of food. Athletic facilities
Adequate investment has been delayed too long There is no disagreeing with Katrina Lande’s observation that a new high school track is long overdue (“A new track is essential and overdue,” Aug. 26). But the stadium field and gym are hardly acceptable either. These facilities are as run down as the old cinder track. The unavoidable problem is that we have gone too long without adequate investment in our high school athletic facilities, which are extensively used by school and community athletes. The gym is over 50 years old with crumbling locker rooms, disintegrating bleachers, a wornout floor and large areas inaccessible to

disabled people. The stadium field turns to muck after the first heavy rain, endangering our athletes. Our kids are at a competitive disadvantage because most schools play on turf. When our field sports athletes make the playoffs (hooray!), they are not allowed to host a home game because we lack a modern turf field. After decades of neglecting our high school athletic facilities, the bill to fix the problem is high, but this is hardly surprising. These costs can be scrutinized and trimmed. For example, why spend more than $1 million dollars to replace an uncovered grandstand with another uncovered grandstand? Does it really make sense to install another high maintenance, fragile grass field when nearly every other school district and municipality in the state has switched to turf fields? Why worry about re-orienting the field at great expense? With the pending school board elections, we have an opportunity to debate the merits of the school district’s plan and each candidate’s position, especially the incumbent board members. Rather than rushing a plan through to avoid the upcoming election, the current board needs to respect this process. Whoever we elect will be asking us to pay for any new athletic facilities. We have the right to evaluate and provide input on those plans.

Volunteers would help garden and art project blossom The garden and art project, Eden Reframed, near the Burton Acres Recreation Center offers a place to contemplate the passing seasons and participate in a public art project that embraces permaculture principles, soil remediation, blossoms for bees and fruit for the picking. Created by former Vashon resident Beverly Naidus and reimagined last year as a pollinator garden, Eden suffered in this summer’s drought. Recently a tiny group of volunteers has established a watering schedule, and the plants have perked up. All island residents and visitors are invited to visit the garden, investigate the story hive and enjoy the late-summer light. Do close the gate when you leave to keep deer from eating the plants. More than 275 motorcycle enthusiasts registered for the 33rd Annual Isle of Vashon Old Bike Rally on Sunday, according to islander Jody Heintzman, one of the organizers. “Considering the inclement weather, this was a great turnout of folks who enjoy riding old bikes on the backroads of Vashon,” he said. Bikes from as far away as Vancouver, B.C., Oregon, California and Idaho were present. Notable bikes included Rick McMaken’s “Oldest Bike,” a 1928 Harley Davidson, and Chris Obrien’s 1950 Vincent Rapide. In appreciation of the support of this event, the Vintage Motorcycle Enthusiasts will donate $500 to the Vashon Maury Community Food Bank, as is their tradition, Heintzman said.

You’ve got mail!
Last week I went to the post office to sign up for a P.O. box and the nice lady told me I would have to get on a waiting list. “Harrumph,” I said, shaking my monocle at her, “this simply wouldn’t stand one-hundred years ago.” The reason for my pique was that in the early part of the last century we had no less than sixteen post offices for our needs. Any place that was big enough to have a name, it seemed, was reason enough to have a postal service. I’ll bet in those days most of the mail on the island was news about another new post office. Typically they were associated with a store but sometimes the operation was in a private home. Small though they might have been, at least one island postal facility got the attention of President Benjamin Harrison when he appointed a new postmaster. According to the certificate he did this, “by and with the advice and consent of the Senate,” marking the last time the President and Senate agreed on anything. One of the first notable mail carriers was Amos Cummings who was paid twenty dollars per month to carry mail from the Burton Dock to the post office. This was a laborious task that he completed with a wheelbarrow. After a time Fred B. Sherman came up with a small cart for Amos which included a pony named Shamus. Many years of reliable service ensued but, as these things happen, he died in 1933 and his ashes were cast upon the water - Amos not Shamus. The first postmistress for the Cedarhurst Post office was Lucille Spaulding. At that time the postal service had an unusual way of compensation. Lucille was paid by the number of letters she handled. And there may have been a little old-fashioned nepotism at work when Dr. Spaulding ran for the senate because all his campaign letters were sent through Lucille’s post office making for a bigger paycheck. These local post offices served as a gathering point for people as well as mail and offered a chance to stay in touch with friends and neighbors. Like many institutions on the island, though, improved roads brought changes. Beginning in June of 1905 Fred Kingsbury became the first Rural Free Delivery (RFD) carrier, working out of Portage. As RFD routes grew larger the need for stand-alone post offices grew smaller. The last one to close was Dockton in 1979 which left us with one post office, and, apparently, no available P.O. boxes!* *The Burton post office is technically a substation of the Vashon post office. back Vashon Tlingit artist Autumn Shotridge and Tlingit/Haida herbal medicinals expert Jessie Hunt. The gallery will feature a variety of sage, sweetgrass, osha and devil’s club ointment from Alaska, plus handmade, beaded leather and sealskin medicine pouches by Autumn Shotridge and devil’s club beaded necklaces by Sue Shotridge. An artist talk by Hunt about the ingredients and benefits of her soaps, healing ointments, and balms will begin at 7:30 p.m. VALISE will present six artists — Claudia Hollander, Morgan Brig, Joanne Hammer, Pascale Judet, Rebecca Dvorin Strong and Bonnie Wilkins — who came together 10 years ago to form an artist group with the humorous moniker “Le Petit Salon.” Eventually the group disbanded until VALISE member Pascale Judet invited the other five artists to join her in a reunion show. Vashon Allied Arts will feature all of the original works by more than 130 Vashon artists that will be auctioned at the nonprofit’s fundraising auction, “Vive La France.” The reception will include a “Taste of Vashon” with food and spirits by many island vendors from 6 to 9 p.m. Vashon Intuitive Arts will show multi-media work of Helen White.

Island artist Ted Kutscher will exhibit new work in a show called “The Light in Places I Like” at the Fountainhead Gallery in Seattle for the month of September. An opening reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12. Kutscher, who has painted many island scenes, was represented by the Silverwood Gallery from 1998, until the gallery closed in 2013, exhibiting new work in annual shows. Commissioned artist inspired by hands By JULI GOETZ MORSER Staff Writer
The Acoma Pueblo located west of Albuquerque is known for its intricately designed pottery, an art form dating back 1,200 years. On a recent visit to the pueblo, island photographer Kim Farrell fell in love with a certain piece of Acoma pottery but found inspiration in the hands that created it. Farrell will offer the photograph she took of the potter’s clay-covered hands as her commissioned art piece for Vashon Allied Arts’ upcoming auction, “Vive La France,” slated for Sept. 18 and 19. Hands have long inspired Farrell. She is drawn to their expressive language that reveals much without words and articulates a visual narrative. “I have always loved older people’s hands as well as their eyes,” Farrell said. “I was struck by her (the potter’s) hands — the bits of clay on her fingernails and the clay highlighted in the cracks in her fingers. Farrell, also known on the island as Dr. Farrell for her dedicated work as a physician, laughingly calls herself a paid observer. She believes that is much of what photography is about — observation. But she quickly adds that photography is also about communicating feelings and reactions to what is observed. Farrell bought her first single lens reflex (SLR) camera in 1988, before spending three months bicycling throughout Europe. Though she’s always been drawn to imagery, loved looking at art and other photography, her simple goal was to have decent photographs. What focused her attention on the art behind the lens was when she saw someone else’s travel photos. “They were taken a mile away and waist high and didn’t tell us anything,” Farrell recalled, “so I decided

Kim Farrell’s photograph, “Acoma Hands,” will be one of six commissioned pieces auctioned at Vashon Allied Arts’ upcoming art auction, “Vive La France.” to have fun playing.” During medical school and throughout her residency, Farrell said she dabbled with her art form. Later, when she and her husband took a year off from work and traveled the world, Farrell made a point of trying to shoot her subjects in different ways. “I loved trying to capture the essence or uniqueness of a place,” Farrell said. She took over 40 rolls of film, and the effort paid off. After moving to Vashon and seeking more formal instruction, Farrell took one of island photographer Ray Pfortner’s classes. When Pfortner saw some of her previous work, he encouraged Farrell to submit her photographs to contests.
She did, and “Nature’s Best,” an international photography magazine, published her images. Farrell dreams of one day shooting for an organization like National Geographic. Closer to home, her more immediate plans are to do a series about the hands of Vashon. “Hands — and eyes — are telling,” Farrell said. “They show the work we do. They can be comforting, loving and also even a weapon. They are so rich and show our sense of humanity. They are markers of people’s lives and time. There is real beauty in that.”

New season opens for Vashon Opera By JULI GOETZ MORSER Staff Writer
In 2008, a small group of island opera lovers banded together to take on the challenge of establishing a fullfledged opera company. Considering the Byzantine complexity of producing an opera, the mission seemed daunting. Yet as Vashon Opera heads into its seventh season with the production of Gaetano Donizetti’s witty “The Elixir of Love,” the company is flourishing, thanks to the dedication of its founders and countless hours of support from island volunteers. “Vashon Opera runs on volunteers,” said artistic director Jennifer Krikawa. “We wouldn’t exist without them. They give their talents, time, support and enthusiasm.” In a recent email, Krikawa listed a partial compilation of the numerous tasks that needed to be accomplished for each opera — from major efforts like designing and constructing of sets to the minor but necessary pinning of wigs. Susan Hedrick, a longtime islander, was an early Vashon Opera volunteer. While she’s worn many hats, including those of her characters when she sings in the chorus, her current job is volunteer coordinator. A dedicated opera fan, Hedrick deeply appreciates the unique nature of Vashon Opera. “It’s such an amazing thing to have a real opera company on this tiny island,” she said, “and we can do it because of people willing to jump in behind the scenes and do some things they’ve never done before. ... They come back show after show and volunteer in different ways.” Karen Perla keeps coming back. She’s been painting sets for several years. She likes to see the different approaches taken by each set designer. And though she admits she’s

not a diehard opera fan, Perla values what Vashon Opera does for the community. “It’s interesting to get such big name singers to come here and to give the Chorale singers and musicians a chance to participate in quality opera,” she said. Cindy Stockett says she didn’t know much about opera before volunteering except that her one experience attending an opera was not her cup of tea. She said Vashon Opera has given her a very different understanding. “We have supertitles (in English), and you are right there, close up,” she said. “The biggest thing for me was when I cried at “Madame Butterfly.” I was very moved by it and really surprised.” Stuart Tribble, on the other hand, began listening to the Texaco-Metropolitan Opera years ago over the radio. He’s worked on the Vashon Opera sets for the past five years and is now the set-build manager. He donates his time because he loves the art form and knows that without volunteer effort, there would be no opera on Vashon. The sets for “The Elixir of Love” include a New York City brownstone, circa 1915, that becomes the backdrop for some of the comedic opera’s famous duets and arias. Barry Johnson, who played Frank in “Die Fledermaus,” will return to play Dr. Dulcamara. Andrew Krikawa, who played Figaro in “The Barber of Seville,” will perform as Sergeant Belcore. The principal roles of Nemorino and Adina will be sung by Robert McPherson and Kristin Vogel, each making their Vashon Opera debut. Vashon singers will again fill out the chorus led by Joe Farmer. Musical and stage director, conductor and orchestral arranger James Brown presides over the production. The volunteer stories are abundant and glowing. But perhaps the most surprising tale comes from newcomers

Football club campaigns for support The Bounty Club — the parent group that supports VHS football — in conjunction with Vashon’s American Legion Post, is launching a joint community service project affectionately being called The Jolly Roger Project. In an effort to promote broader community awareness and support for the high school football teams, the two organizations will hang Jolly Roger pirate flags on the American Legion’s flag poles and standards throughout the island. The flags will be hung on each day of a home football game. Volunteers from both organizations will install and take down the flags, all at no cost to merchants. Individuals or merchants who do not currently participate in the Legion’s regular flag program but would like to join this
event are encouraged to do so. Flags will be hung on Fridays, Sept. 4 and 18; Oct. 2 and 16; and Nov. 6. Additionally, the Bounty Club is planning to resurrect the time-honored tradition of the tailgate parade to every home game, leaving from Ober Park and driving through town to the stadium. Pre-game tailgate parties will also be held at Sporty’s restaurant from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. before each home game. Postgame events will be held at Saucy Sisters. Both events are family-friendly, and the merchants are donating a portion of the proceeds to the football team as they raise funds for new uniforms. VHS varsity football team gets pre-season workout at jamboree By CHERYL PRUETT For The Beachcomber
The Vashon Pirates football team took to the field in pre-season action last Friday at Franklin Pierce High School in Tacoma. Four schools competed in the round-robin style scrimmages, with each team getting valuable field time to work out the kinks before the regular season begins. Vashon ran 10 offensive plays and 10 defensive plays against 1A teams from Rainier and Toledo, and 2A Washington High School from Lakewood. With many rookie players as well as several players who sat out the last few years, the team was able to shake off some rust and settle some nerves before they face Forks in this Friday’s home opener. Junior running back Bryce Hoisington is looking to pick up where he left off last season and had several carries for positive yardage. Filling out the running back corps are senior Logan Nelson and freshman Adrian St. Germain.
Taking snaps for the Pirates, sophomore Connor Hoisington is adapting to a new system of plays. Back on the field this year after being sidelined with injuries last year, are seniors Edgar Polkat and Clyde Puett, both receivers. The offensive and defensive lines look strong this season with senior Matt Kruly jumping in the fray, joining rock solid starters Ronnie Krieger, Hunter Stanley, Jackson Bard and Cody Whitman. And looking like they never missed a year, seniors Azim St. Germain and Anthony Gateman stepped in and made impact plays throughout the scrimmages. The Pirates will take on Forks at 7 p.m. on Friday at the VHS field. There will be a pre-game, family-friendly tailgate event at Sporty’s from 5:30-6:30 p.m., with a portion of the proceeds going to the Bounty Club (the fundraising support group for the team). — Cheryl Pruett is the parent of two VHS football players.

Longtime racer places third at NHRA event By DANIEL GREEN For The Beachcomber
Island drag racer Chris Barnes recently landed third place in the National Hot Rod Association’s (NHRA) Northwest Nationals. Racing his 1964 Plymouth wagon against powerful American muscle cars, Barnes didn’t go down until the semi-finals, a whopping achievement for a station wagon driver. Barnes has been involved in drag racing for over two decades now, but he explained that his interest in cars goes farther back. “I was a car guy since I got

Hotwheels,” he said. Now, he and his crew chief, islander Mike Brenno, have competed in a myriad of racing events with a handful of old wagons. Their most coveted vehicle, however, is the ‘64 Plymouth Savoy that almost took them to the top of the Northwest nationals. Barnes admitted that the car was an “old man magnet.” “It has a carburetor,” he noted. “A lot of people don’t even know what a carburetor is.” But the car attracts geezers for a good reason: its racing class, “Stock Eliminator,” is one of the most historic
classes in the NHRA, meaning some of the old men who talk to Barnes about his car were actually veteran racers. “It’s like going to a baseball game and meeting Babe Ruth,” Barnes said. Aside from the attention Barnes receives because of his car’s age, the wagon itself is, as dragster enthusiasts would put it, a “monster.” He has upgraded the car’s stock 318 HP engine with a 426 — an engine that displaces just one cubic inch less than most of the classic Corvettes. Barnes said he covers the first 60 feet of a race in less than 1.5
seconds, adding that he routinely runs the car at around 125 miles per hour at the peak of the race. “I’m haulin’ ass,” he said, somewhat seriously. “All the organs are pinned to the back of your body and the front wheels come up off the ground.” Not surprisingly, the car eats up a gallon of fuel every quarter mile. T he t h i rd place showing at Northwest Nationals has been one of the greatest achievements of Barnes’, and his team’s, racing career. At the competition, 40,000 people watched as he burnt
opponent after opponent. In addition to the $450 in award money he will receive, the victory proved to Barnes that his years of hard work and love for the sport could pay off with sheer excitement. After all, Barnes doesn’t drive with hopes of stardom, but rather for the simple enjoyment of racing souped-up cars. On his car’s website, Barnes described his battle at nationals rather casually: “It was a fun ride.” — Daniel Green recently graduated from Vashon High School, where he wrote for The Riptide.

If he had, or if the doctors had recognized the classic symptoms of AIDS much sooner and treated him, he would still be alive.” It was then that Mann’s commission became more of a mission. Dubbing the project GTZ or Getting to Zero (new HIV diagnoses), she soon discovered how big the task ahead of her was. When she first began working on the piece with the teens from Moving in the Spirit, she found that they were more concerned about getting Ebola than HIV, and they knew nothing of the initial outbreak in the early 1980s that began the epidemic. Most felt that AIDS was only a concern in Africa, she said, completely unaware of a death toll that topped nearly 600,000 Americans by 2005 and continues to climb. The CDC has reported that 13,712 people in the U.S. died of AIDS in 2012 and that factors

Lending a hand to Mann’s mission are both Staczek and Lamblin. To provide a musical framework for her choreography for the performance piece, Mann brought in Staczek, a musician, composer and former engineer, who has played with artists such as Jackson Browne and Crosby, Stills and Nash, and has created the musical scores for several films. “Ela (Lamblin) and Leah have invited me to participate in many Lelavision projects,” he said in an email, adding that his involvement in Getting to Zero came out of discussions the trio had during rehearsals of their latest show. Given that the funding for the GTZ project was coming from Elton John’s AIDS Foundation, Staczek’s initial idea was a re-write of John’s well known song “Candle in the Wind.” But copyright issues prevented them from using it, so Staczek set to work on an original. “It turned out to be more difficult than I thought, because it was very hard to let go of the re-written lyrics to Candle,” he explained. “They (the words) were married to the melody of that song, so they didn’t really want to break out into a new one.” But with the encouragement of a producer-friend in Los Angeles, Staczek started from scratch, and musicians in California recorded the new song. His second contribution was a hip-hop song with an Austin, Texas-based producer and rapper who goes by the name Click-Clack. “I had seen him perform at SXSW (South-by-Southwest) several years ago,” he said. “I knew he would bring something special to the project, and he did. He was able to take ideas from the project and deliver them from a powerful, personal perspective.” Lamblin, for his part, is creating an art-intervention video that will broaden the reach of GTZ and is to be streamed along with videos created by the CDC for its Let’s Stop HIV Together campaign. The video will include interviews Lamblin has conducted with a pediatric HIV specialist from Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, as well as young adults living with HIV both there and in Seattle. The Moving in the Spirit performance will open on Dec. 1, World AIDS Day, at Morehouse College in Atlanta — a private, all-male, historically black school — as young, gay or bisexual black males account for the highest percentage of new HIV diagnoses. From there, the show will go on tour through 2017. Staczek has high hopes for the project beyond its commission. “I hope it (the music) will have some life after the performances to help spread positive messages about the importance of protecting everyone’s sexual health,” he said. Mann’s goals for her mission are far-reaching and clear as well. “Kids aren’t using condoms; they aren’t taking care of themselves. Why not?” she said. “Ela’s video will be shown in biology classes at some of the colleges we’ve been working with, and it could be used across the country. Knowledge is power, so we need to get all of them the information they need and get rid of the stigmas and judgement.” In addition to the Kickstarter campaign that will begin next week, the artists will perform two benefit concerts in November to help raise $10,000 more for the project.

The next day, he sent a text to Kate with a photo of their dad on the tractor, the flames close and clearly visible. “Here is my dad against this powerful and destructive force, head down, trying to save the house and animals,” Kate said. “It was a desperate, desperate feeling for us.” Kate’s husband Ben Davidson was on duty as a firefighter/EMT with VIFR, and she turned to him for help. “I asked him what in the world can we do? My dad is out there taking on the fires,” she said. She sent the photo of her dad on the tractor to Ben, who in turn sent it to Brett Kranjcevich, a volunteer assistant chief with VIFR and the department’s mechanic, who was serving with a South King County team not far from the Dovers. Kranjcevich’s response, Kate said, was that he and his crew could be there within 20 minutes. “I was sitting there white-knuckled,” she recalled. “I was trying to estimate how long it would take for the fire to get to their house.” Upon arriving at the Dovers’ home, Kranjcevich took charge and the men got to work, Avé said. “When the Vashon guys got there, it was like the cavalry had come.” Fire was advancing closely on one side, while also moving in from the back, and another fire was burning in a field across the road, she said. To make matters worse, neighbors who had evacuated had dropped off horses, and instead of having just their own, the Dovers were housing nine of the animals, several of which had begun to fight. The gates were open for them to escape if needed, but some had knocked the fence down, and they were running wild in the yard and road, chased by the Dovers’ dogs. “It was a zoo,” Avé said. “We were fighting a fire and had a stampede at the same time.” Through it all, she added, the men, with Kranjcevich in the lead, stayed focused on their task, and she credits them with saving their home, though firefighters from the Department of Natural Resources arrived later and helped as well. “There is no doubt the house would have burned down in another 20 minutes if they

Marilyn Rae Bailey Marilyn Rae Bailey, 63, passed away on August 20th, 2015. She was born in Devils Lake, North Dakota on September 5th, 1951. Marilyn graduated from Vashon High School and later received a degree in nursing from North Seattle Community College. She was married to Gary Lee Bailey on January 17th 1970 and had two children, Vincent and Angela. Marilyn’s career and passion was to care for others. She worked for over 30 years in general health, nursing homes and home health care taking care of those that needed her love and support. Most of all, Marilyn had passion for her family, especially her grandkids, and her animals. She was also an avid reader and loved to shop. Marilyn is lovingly remembered by; son – Vince(Nikki); daughter – Angela (Keith); grandchildren -Gary, Vincent, Keyonna, Brianna, Kayla and Daniel; sisters & brothers – Barbara (Dave), Bonnie (Doug), Patty (John), Bob (Debbie), Barbara B., and Doug F; companion - Brad; natural father- Peter and many other extended family members whom she loved dearly. She is preceded in death by; husband Gary; parents - Helen and Chuck Hanna; sister - Karilyn; best friend – Joe. Marilyn will be laid to rest on Saturday, September 5, 2015. Services will be held at Yarington’s Funeral Home.

Annika is very shy but gentle. She is still getting used to her surroundings at the shelter and she gets along fine with her bunk mates in the Blue Room.
