City kicks off 2nd annual So Bazaar art market SAMANTHA PAK spak@redmond-reporter.com
Thursday kicked off the City of Redmond’s second annual So Bazaar art market. It was the first in a series of three free events this month, with the remaining So Bazaar events on Aug. 20 and 27. Joshua Heim, cultural arts administrator for the city, said they piloted the
event last year as a night market and about 5,000 people attended. This time around, they are starting things earlier at noon and the market will last till 10 p.m. each night. Heim said the idea to extend So Bazaar came from Northwest Art Alliance, one their partners for this year’s events. So Bazaar will be located along the Redmond Central
Connector (RCC) between 161st Avenue Northeast and Leary Way Northeast in downtown. Heim said they are building on what people enjoyed about last year — doubling the number of artists in the marketplace. There will be 25 local artists and artisans selling their wares, such as jewelry, woodwork, metalwork, ceramics, fiber art and
soaps. One of the focuses of this year’s So Bazaar was to make the market experience successful, Heim said, who added that the city also received feedback from vendors saying they wanted the market to open at noon. Residents of Camp Unity Eastside (CUE) may soon be living in something other than tents. Today, NewHouse R&D, a company from Ann Arbor, Mich., will be arriving at the homeless encampment at Redwood Family Church (11500 RedmondWoodinville Rd. N.E. in Redmond) to assemble their DecaDome. The DecaDome is a lightweight portable shelter with walls and a roof that can be built and taken apart in a matter of hours. Allen Bolen, outside coordinator for CUE, said they are looking at the DecaDome as a long-term alternative to tents. He said these shelters can last longer as they can better resist the elements, which is particularly beneficial for
those who are living outside long term. “We are very excited at the possibility of finding a humane, comfortable, safe, alternative to tents,” said CUE treasurer Chris Yager in a press release. “We spend thousands of dollars a year replacing wet, moldy, torn tents and believe there must be a better option.” NewHouse owner, Eric Lipson is equally enthusiastic. “So far, people have really liked this model,” he said in the same release. “We are looking forward to hearing what the Camp Unity residents and the community think. That’s the whole point of this exercise. We will also assemble the unit with Camp Unity volunteers so they will learn how the buildings go up, and be able to do it themselves if we build more.” [ more CAMP page 7 ]
‘No’ votes still lead the way in proposition results According to the King County Elections website at the Reporter’s press time, Redmond’s Proposition 1 had a “no” percentage of 53.08 (4,084 votes) and a “yes” percentage of 46.92 (3,610 votes). Proposition 2 had a “no” percentage of 54.05 (4,163 votes) and a “yes” percentage of 45.95 (3,539 votes). Both propositions need a simple majority to pass. A percentage of 27.59 of the ballots had been counted: 7,747 out of 28,075 registered voters. Proposition 1 addresses public safety, infrastructure and walkability. Proposition 2 focuses on capital projects in the parks department and parks maintenance. The next election results update will be at 4:30 p.m. today. The results will be certified at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

A 20-year-old Renton male was charged at King County Superior Court
Aug. 7 with one count of child molestation in the first degree, according to court documents. Melyvn Bravo-Flores will be arraigned on Aug. 19 at the Seattle courthouse, according to the King County Prosecuting Attorney Office’s press secretary. Redmond police officers arrested the defendant at his residence Aug. 5 for investigation of child molestation charges at the La Petite Academy in Red-
mond. He was booked into King County Jail, where he remains with bail set at $100,000. In an earlier report, Redmond Police Department (RPD) public information officer Becky Range said on July 15, a staff member at the academy, located at 8675 161st Ave. N.E., notified police that a family reported child molestation allegations involving a staff member and a 5-year-old [ more CHARGED page 3 ]

A 30-year-old Redmond man died in a two-car accident on eastbound Interstate 90 near Snoqualmie last Saturday afternoon. According to a Washington State Patrol (WSP) press memo and press release, at 2:10 p.m. a 20-year-old male driver from Medina was traveling eastbound on I-90 near State Route 18 and drifted onto the left shoulder and hit a parked vehicle. A 29-year-old Redmond female standing outside her vehicle was struck and critically injured. The man who was sitting in the female’s car later died at Harborview Medical Center. He was identified as Sohel Ahuja by the King
Redmond announces voluntary water curtailment The City of Redmond announced that it is joining Cascade Water Alliance, Seattle Public Utilities, Tacoma Water and the City of Everett in asking residents and businesses for voluntary curtailment of their use of water by 10 percent of projected current use due to continuing drought conditions. The City of Redmond along with Bellevue, Kirkland, Issaquah, Tukwila, Sammamish Plateau and Skyway water and sewer districts get their drinking water from the Seattle water supply. Historic low river levels, combined with record-setting hot and dry weather have significantly increased the demand for water. These reductions in water use will help the region further maximize its water supply for people and fish. “We are asking Redmond

Downtown visitors get up to four hours of free parking
and a forensic child interviewer spoke with the victim to gather more details about what occurred. The forensic child interviewer also spoke to a teacher, who said she observed the defendant tuck the victim into her cot on several
occasions, according to documents. On Aug. 5, Redmond police notified Renton police they were in their jurisdiction and were making the arrest, which occurred without incident, Range said.
Visitors to downtown Redmond can now get up to four hours of free parking in the Redmond Central Connector (RCC) lot. The parking rate for more than four hours is $5. The RCC lot, which opened on Dec. 16, 2013, features work done by artist John Fleming. The striking 10-foot rings in alternating blue and yellow were designed to draw attention to the grove of trees left standing when the parking structure was built. The lot has 92 parking spaces, two of which are for disabled drivers. Operating hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday; parking is free for the first four hours during this time, as well as on weekends and holidays. Seven steps to a great school year Where did summer go? It’s hard to believe that a new school year begins in just a few weeks. For most kids and teens, this is an exciting time: They’re looking forward to seeing their friends, making new ones and learning more about their favorite subjects. But it’s also a time of stress and anxiety: Will I do well in school? Will my parents be proud of me? Will I make the sports team? Will people like me? At Youth Eastside Services (YES), many of the young people we see are having problems dealing with pressure — from their parents and their friends, but mostly, from themselves. Sometimes the result of this stress is feeling lost or sad, like they don’t know how to cope. Sometimes the situation is worse, and they’ve tried to stifle their worries with drugs or alcohol. Whether your child is just starting elementary school or getting ready to finish high school, we’ve got seven suggestions to help you set them up for success this school year: Patti Skelton-McGougan

1. Keep an open, communicative relationship with your child. Even if your child seems totally OK, open up a conversation to make sure that they feel safe talking with you about what’s going on in their life. Check in regularly. The simple act of listening and reassuring can go a long way. 2. Make sure your child has a structured routine. Depending on their age, you can either set a predictable schedule for them, or if they’re older, help them create one. Just be sure not to overschedule your child, or encourage over-scheduling. Leave some room for downtime. 3. Help them find healthy outlets for stress. Does your child like music? Running? Reading? Cooking? Spending time with friends? Help your child find and indulge their passions to stave off stress.
4. Teach and model problem-solving. When you run into an obstacle, what do you do? Kids watch and learn, so next time you’re in a tough spot, take a step back and show them patience, creativity and perseverance. Make sure your child also knows that it’s OK to fail sometimes; treat it as a learning opportunity, and emphasize effort over ability. 5. Encourage good nutrition, exercise and rest. The foundation of a healthy kid is a balanced diet, regular activity and proper sleep — eight hours or more. 6. Inform your child about upcoming life changes. If you know there will be a big change coming up — a new job, a trip, a move — treat your child like one of the team and let them know early. Better yet, get them involved in important decisions that impact them. 7. Maintain perspective and encourage your child to do the same. The most important thing is your child’s health and well-being. Straight A’s or the “right” college won’t ensure that they’ll be happy in life.
No matter what you do, sometimes kids just need extra support. Irritability, headaches, stomach aches, changes in eating or sleeping habits, skipping school and clinginess can all be signs of a stressedout kid. If you’re concerned about your child, call YES, and we can guide you to resources that can help you. Most importantly, don’t forget to mitigate your own stress. Studies show that excess parental stress can decrease the quality of your relationship with your child, and increase the number of negative interactions you have with them. Even better: By managing your own stress, you’ll be setting a great example.

Funding needed to find cure for Alzheimer’s There has been growing recognition of the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease but the funding to find a cure lags dramatically behind what’s necessary. In 2010, Congress unanimously passed legislation that set a goal of finding a treatment for Alzheimer’s by 2025. But National Institute of Health (NIH) research on dementia has not increased to the $2 billion a year level that scientists say is needed. In fact, for every $100 spent on Alzheimer’s research, Medicare and Medicaid programs spend $26,000 to care for people with the disease. Currently there are 100,000 Washingtonians living with Alzheimer’s disease, and that number will grow to 140,000 by 2025. We must invest more to find a treatment and a cure now. The U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee has approved a bill giving $350 million more to the NIH for Alzheimer’s research, while the House Committee has voted $300 million. If even the
lower figure is signed into law, that would be a 50 percent increase in research funding for this disease. I urge senators Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell, as well as Rep. Suzan DelBene, to vote for this vital Alzheimer’s research boost and push to make sure it is in the final appropriations bill enacted into law.

Health reform is in motion, let’s keep it going The Supreme Court ruling upholding tax subsidies in federally funded states that are a lifeline to low-income people was a victory for our country. In the King v. Burwell decision, the Supreme Court recognizes that tax credits are one of the Affordable Care Act (ACA)’s key reforms and vital to the law as a whole. Now, we should consider this lawsuit an inspiration to transform our health-care system. As far as we’ve come, there is still more we can do. There are provisions laid out in the ACA designed to en-
sure the quality of care we receive doesn’t depend on our income, race or what language we speak. Like many managing a chronic health condition, I’ve struggled to afford care despite having health insurance through my employer. It’s a relief knowing I can’t be denied coverage for a preexisting condition, yet still, living with diabetes has landed me with significant medical bills, calls from debt collectors, and even legal action taken against me. We must also build on the gains we have already made here in Washington to develop a health-care system where no one is left out and everyone can make health-care decisions without fear of falling into medical debt. A multi-year, grassroots movement has started to bring a truly universal health care system to our state. I’m part of the Health Care is a Human Right campaign (healthcareisarightwa.org) and I encourage others to get involved in their communities. Health reform is in motion. Let’s keep that motion going and realize a health-care system that works for all of us.

Lily Burns describes herself as a typically reserved person, but admits that when it comes to her children, she will do whatever she needs to stand up for them and support them. It was because of this fierceness to protect her two children — who are grown now — that she was so affected when a 2-yearold girl was struck and killed by a car on July 1 at Redmond Town Center (RTC). The girl had run out from the curb near the town center’s playground and into the road, where a 25-year-old male driver was
already slowing down as he approached the intersection of Northeast 74th Street and 164th Avenue Northeast. “It was kind of waiting to happen,” Burns said, explaining that there is no fencing or any type of barrier between the town center playground and the road except for a fence directly surrounding the play area.

Last month’s incident left such an impression on Burns, who lives in downtown Redmond, that she has started a petition on Change.org. The petition calls for RTC to make

Burns has also started a Facebook group called Do Something Redmond. Currently the group is focused on the petition, but she said its purpose is to provide a space for people to share their concerns about safety and other issues in the rapidly growing community. Burns said the incident happened on the evening of July 1 and by 9 a.m. on July 2, things were back to normal and there was no sign or evidence of the incident except for a couple of flower bouquets people had placed at the site. She felt this was disgraceful and disrespectful to the girl and her family. The petition is Burns’ way to honor the girl. “I’ve just really taken this to heart,” she said. She also wants to prevent a tragedy like this from happening again.

But when she drove through the town center Tuesday morning, Burns said she saw no indication of this.

Courtney Klein, who has been the town center’s property manager since 2013, said they are currently working with a safety expert to install additional barriers at the entrance of the Sensory Garden play area as well as a fence by
the landscaping. “That work will be completed next month,” she said. Klein said since July 1, they have received a few emails from people who are concerned about safety at the town center. “We have had many conversations with businesses within the Redmond Town Center community over this tragic loss,” she added. “As a whole, the response has been a shared grieving and inquiries on how to support those involved.” Klein said they have also received emails from those asking what they can do for the girl’s family. She said many RTC businesses have made donations to the Safe Crossing Foundation, a Seattle-based organization that helps children heal and

Through her petition, Burns is proposing a portion of the streets approaching the intersection where the playground is located — Northeast 74th Street and 164th Avenue Northeast — be closed to traffic and become pedestrianonly zones. Northeast 74th Street on the east side of the intersection is already closed to vehicle traffic and Burns’ proposal would just extend the closure. “It is preventable if you simply take the cars away from the children,” she said about another incident in the future. In response to this suggestion, Klein said there are no plans to extend the pedestrian-only area at this time. “We need to adhere to city codes for traffic requirements and emergency access for the hotels and office buildings,” she explained. While this may not be an option RTC officials are looking at, Klein said they are looking at others. “Internally we are looking at all possibilities and we certainly appreciate everyone’s ideas, including the idea of a security guard (to watch for children who may stray from the play area and/or their caretakers),” she said.

She is the city’s artist in residence and these performances — entitled “Dream for Redmond” I and II — will be like a farewell to Redmond. “We’re really wrapping up her time here,” Heim said about Neare. He added that for him, Neare’s performances are what he is looking forward to the most with So Bazaar. For Van Winkle, who is a Redmond resident, she said she is looking forward to the great art and meeting and interacting with her neighbors in town. In addition to the featured art-
ists, there will be a Night Nosh featuring food trucks, which will run from 4-9:30 p.m. each night. And just as organizers have doubled the number of artists this year, Heim said they have also doubled the number of food trucks. “Every night (last year), the food trucks sold out,” Heim said. There will be different food trucks each night, though some will be at So Bazaar for more than one night. This year’s Night Nosh lineup includes Athena’s Food Truck, Peasant Food Manifesto, Seattle Pops, People of the Chubbs and Bumbu Truck. There will also be a Sip Bazaar underneath the “Signals” art installation. From noon to 1:30 p.m., it will be for all ages, featuring a milk bar by Smith Brothers one day and Italian sodas from Trader Joe’s. Beginning at 4 p.m., the Sip Bazaar will be 21 and older and feature beer, wine and signature cocktails.

CUE is an independent, nonprofit camp that rotates among local churches. The encampment arrived at Redwood on June 20 and will be there until Sept. 20. Bolen said since they have been at Redwood, they have received a lot of support from the church. He said church officials have made themselves available to CUE and check in with them on a regular basis. Todd Puckett, the senior pastor at Redwood, said things are constantly improving. “We are thankful to have the opportunity to serve the homeless community in Jesus’s name,” he said. “Every homeless person is an individual whom God loves and we feel it is our job to be His vessels. We long to see lives transformed and for every individual to have there needs met. We all need community.” Bolen echoed this feeling and said the Redwood community has been like a family.

Often the issues are civil matters, but we provide assistance when possible.” Tomorrow, CUE will be holding an open house from noon to 4 p.m. The community is invited to attend, tour the camp, share refreshments, meet the neighbors and check out and critique the DecaDome. Bolen said the open house will give their neighbors the opportunity to meet CUE residents and learn more about the encampment.

Einstein among four LWSD schools to receive all-day kindergarten funding from state
schools in Kirkland. About 72 percent of kindergarten students statewide will be eligible for state funded all-day kindergarten in the 201516 school year. For this school year, families who opt for allday kindergarten in the 27 other LWSD elementary schools will still pay for the second half of the school day. State funding pays only for half-day kindergarten in other district schools. Half-day kindergarten remains free to families in those 27 other schools. The budget recently passed by the state legislature included the increased funding for all-day kindergarten that will allow the addition of four LWSD schools in

When asked where he got the idea for the book, he said fiction books are usually somewhat autobiographical and it was no different in his case. 2015-16. The state of Washington gradually has been increasing the number of schools in the state that are funded for all-day kindergarten since 200708. It began with funding for schools with the highest level of poverty. This is the first year that any school in LWSD has received state funding for all-day kindergarten. The state is moving toward all-day kindergarten because research shows it offers opportunities for long-term educational gains, especially in the areas of reading and mathematics.
A Better View
“I was in the army,” Gibb said, adding that he also served in Vietnam. “I wrote about what I knew.” In addition, he has worked in the investment industry just as Johnson does in the story. Gibb founded Sweetwater Investments, Inc. in downtown Redmond in 1989. Gibb said he initially planned for his novel to be about the funny things he has seen throughout his post-military career, but things just weren’t coming together. So the story became about an “everyman” and the

struggles he faces when he begins a new profession. For Gibb, it was more than just Johnson’s career paths that mirrored his own. He said upon returning from Vietnam, he also had to adjust to life back home. “I will openly admit that I had PTSD,” he said. Back then, Gibb said, people did not know what that was or how to treat the condition. He explained that in the military, it is a very inclusive environment and there is a lot of excitement and adrenaline during combat time. Coming back home, Gibb said, can sometimes be a letdown as soldiers depressurize from an action-packed life. “A lot of those rules don’t transfer to civilian life,” he said. It took Gibb eight years to write “Exordium.” Having never written much prior — he had only written newsletters to his clients — he said he attended a few seminars on how to write a book.
One of the things he took away from those seminars was that he needed to treat writing like another job and set time aside to actually do the job. For Gibb, that time is an hour each night. “It takes longer than you think it’s going to take,” he said. Gibb also learned that writing is not easy, especially when you are writing for other people — especially if they are not familiar with the topic. He said most people have no real understanding of the military or of the investment industry, so he had to find a way to simplify things but still provide enough details so readers can understand the concepts. Despite the challenges he faced in writing “Exordium,” Gibb said he has “ideas for a couple more novels.” “I guess once it gets in the blood it is hard to stop,” he said, adding that he also would like to write a book about investments.

Man pleads guilty to attempted murder for injecting son with heroin A Redmond man pleaded guilty Thursday afternoon to attempted murder in the first degree for attempting to kill his 4-year-old son in 2013 by injecting him with heroin, according to the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office website. The defendant, Eric E. Lehtinen, 39, will face a sentence range of 15 to 20 years in prison. Prosecutors will recommend a sentence of 20 years in prison. Lehtinen is currently scheduled for sentencing on Sept. 4 before Judge Mary Roberts in courtroom W-905 of the King County Courthouse. The case was handled by Senior Deputy Prosecutor Don Raz and Deputy Prosecutor Ben Gauen.
Welker’s trial moved to Aug. 24 Christine Welker’s trial has been moved from Aug. 12 to Aug. 24, according to the King County Prosecuting Attorney Office. The Redmond woman was charged with assault in the first degree — domes-
tic violence for reportedly stabbing her husband on the morning of April 28, 2014. At that time, she was 54 years old and her husband was 66 years old. King County Superior Court documents state that Welker pleaded not guilty to the charge at her arraignment on May 13, 2014. She was charged April 30, 2014 and is being held in King County Jail in Seattle on $500,000 bail, according to court documents and the prosecuting attorney’s press secretary.
Malsch’s case setting continued to Aug. 19 Robert Malsch, a 21-year-old man from Lynnwood who pleaded not guilty to vehicular homicide, hit-and-run felony and reckless driving in Redmond in February, had his case-setting hearing continued to Aug. 19, according to the King County Prosecuting Attorney Office.

This project — located at 18024 Redmond Way — incorporates an attractive design as well as a functional structure to meet the needs of residents and businesses. The property has four stories and a covered load and unload area with 578 units. Indian Men’s Golf Club will tee off Seattle ProAm Sunday in Redmond IMGC (Indian Men’s Golf Club) will tee off its Seattle Pro-Am 2015 at 2 p.m. Sunday at The Golf Club at Redmond Ridge. The event will feature the 10 top Indian professional golfers who are visiting the United States on an eight-week tour across 18 cities. Local amateurs are invited to play alongside the Indian pros. The nonprofit IAPGA (Indo-American Professional Golf Association) will help put on the event and proceeds from the event will go to the organization. “While IAPGA is set up to support self-funded golfers in India to give them exposure to play in the U.S. and help them qualify for PGA, these pros give back to the local communities who support them by giving free golf clinics and organizing pro-am tournaments,” reads a press release. “The tournament will bring the South Asian Indian and American community together and drive cross-culture diversity with the amazing game of golf.” Tomorrow, the pros will offer a free golf clinic, along with chipping and putting contests, at 2 p.m. at The Golf Club at Redmond Ridge. Redmond Historical Society gets 4Culture grant to research area poultry history The Redmond Historical Society has received a Heritage Project grant from 4Culture of King County — totaling nearly $7,000 — to help research and document the history of the chicken farm industry in Redmond, which goes as far back as the 1920s. The effort will culminate in a presentation to the community about the once-prevalent poultry business.

The findings of the research are targeted to be presented as part of the Redmond Historical Society’s Saturday Speaker Series in the fall of 2016. Redmond Historical Society is a volunteersupported organization, with offices and historical displays housed in the Old Redmond Schoolhouse Community Center. The society receives financial support from 4Culture, the City of Redmond, the Bellevue Collection, Nintendo of America and Happy Valley Grange, as well as from other donors and members. Redmond Historical Society is known widely for its Saturday Speaker Series. The Redmond Historical society is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1999. The society’s mission is to serve the community through stewardship: collecting, preserving and sharing Redmond’s unique heritage. According to the grant narrative, “poultry, especially egg producing, was once big business in our state. It is the story of immigrants, family farms, co-operative marketing associations, exports, and internationally recognized scientific breeding.” Today there is not much physical evidence of this era in Redmond’s history—and with the exception of the Morelli farm, “there is scant written information.” The project will be implemented in phases. Initially, society volunteers will be collecting first-hand accounts from surviving family members who were part of this era in Redmond history. Pierre Bruneau, 85, whose parents moved to Redmond in the mid-1940s and started Skyline Poultry Ranch on land that is in today’s north Redmond neighborhood, is one such example. The research will also seek to collect information on the Redmond activities of Heisdorf & Nelson, an internationally known poultry breeding business that at one time had its headquarters and a hatchery in the area of today’s Microsoft campus. The interviews will be handed off to a historian who will

DEA announces 10th annual Prescription Drug Take-Back United States Drug Enforcement Administration acting administrator Chuck
Rosenberg announced that the 10th National Prescription Drug Take-Back will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 26. As with the previous nine events, sites will be set up throughout communities nationwide so local residents can return their unwanted, unneeded or expired prescription drugs for safe disposal. Collection sites in every local community can be found by going to www. dea.gov. This site will be continuously updated with new take-back locations. The National Prescription Drug Take-Back addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Many Americans are not aware that medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are at alarming rates, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that many abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, many Americans do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medicine, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away — both potential safety and health hazards.

The real estate market activity for the Greater Eastside and King County through July has been HOT. Due to an extreme “lack of homes on the market” there is no sign of a typical summer slowdown in sight. One reason sellers may be hesitant in listing their home is fearing that they may not be able to find a replacement.
