When Monte Powell isn’t boating, collecting antique oriental rugs, celebrating 60 years with his wife Diane or spending time with his five (grown) children, he’s working at PowellsWood Garden in Federal Way. And the 16-year-old, three-acre garden has come along way since the Powells bought the 40-acre property in 1993. “We believe gardens can be therapeutic,” Powell said. “I like to say get

den. Now an oasis in Federal Way’s urban environment, it wasn’t always that way. When they bought the property, they discovered the ravined property had been severely neglected and used as a dumping ground. The only thing salvageable was the successional forest that remains today. “It was really somewhat barren or bare around the house,” he said. “It just had things dumped on it so we did two or three years of soil restoration and built the garden on top of that.” Soil improvement was key, Powell said, as when he started he “couldn’t

the soil right before you try to do the garden and the garden will calm your soul, not soil.” Before they purchased the property, the Powells moved to Federal Way in 1961 as Powell’s business was in Des Moines. In his early days, he was also an official naturalist for Water District 56 and knew the property as having a spring with good quality water. He recalls his children playing in the forest when they were younger. “There were only 5,000 people here,” Powell said of Federal Way. “It looked like the suburbs.” Powell said he got his green thumb

grow weeds.” But they eventually grew hedges to divide the outside space into seven garden “rooms” and opened their garden to the public in 1999 during the Federal Way Symphony’s Garden Tour, which they helped start. The garden room and patio were completed in 2003 and eventually the Powells opened their garden to the public as a way to serve the Federal Way community. Although Oliver the neighbor cat gets free access, the garden is open to the public from April through October from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesdays through Saturdays. Entry is $5 per person and is free for children under 12 years old. Guided tours are $8. Over the years, the garden has changed from an English theme to more of a northwestern garden. “We try to do things that are really appropriate to the Northwest by using leaf textures, size patterns and plant and flowering,” Powell said. “… We’re constantly bringing in new material.” The newest would have to be the golden form of Don Redwood, a plant that was thought to be extinct but was found in China in 1946. The Powells also host several community events, with the largest being the Mother’s Day tea and the Story Telling Festival in July. This year’s Storytelling Festival is on Friday, July 24 and Saturday, July 25. Special storytellers include Donald Davis, Lyn Ford, Kevin Kling, Motoko and Antonio Rocha. “Storytelling is not reading out of a book,” Powell said. “It’s for adults as well as for children.” Powell said the workshops that will teach people better storytelling skills are important because storytelling can not only improve communication but help people understand complex ideas. The event brings more than 600 people and is $20 for adults, $5 for

children. This year, Powell installed a green parking lot that essentially looks like a grass lawn with a garden around it. But it’s specially designed to hold cars with a plastic grid system that’s incorporated beneath. The grass pave locks together with sand in between and under it, creating a lawn that’s strong enough to hold fire trucks. Powell said a green parking lot is currently at Village Green, a Federal Way-based retirement home that he owns. Along with the green parking lot is the implementation of the garden’s first rain garden, which will likely be complete by next spring. “The water runs off the top of the house, through the pipes and into this pit, which we’ll put plants and things,” he said. “Eventually, we’ll plant it up but now it’s very sparse.” As Powell looks to the future, he sees PowellsWood as a public garden. In fact, they’ve already formed a nonprofit. And as they continue to refine and improve the garden, Powell’s ultimate goal is to be a resource for educational youth outreach. They just finished a trial run with Mountain to Sound Greenway Program, which develops curriculums and resources for children to learn about conservation efforts. The program works with schools and coordinates six sections of learning. “There’s quite a movement now, I think there’s a recognition, that if we’re going to have an affect on, well in dramatic terms, saving the planet, you’ve got to deal with this younger age group and get them thinking about it because a number of the problems that have been created have been through lack of knowledge or understanding,” Powell said. “So you’re trying to bring up this knowledge base of the younger generation and that’s where we’re going to solve the problems.”

The building off of exit 143 at the entrance of Federal Way shimmers on the outside — and inside. Inside that building is the headquarters of the largest private mint in the country. The Northwest Territorial Mint began operation in 1984 in Auburn. The headquarters has been situated in Federal Way for about six years now, located at 2505 S. 320th St. Ross Hansen, owner and founder of the company, got his start in the business by selling coins as a teenager. “In 1976, as a 16-year-old, I started selling coins and gold and silver at a little flea market right off Highway-99,” Hansen said. “For whatever reason, I didn’t think you could make that a living. I just thought of it as a hobby, but it was a hobby I did pretty well at.” He went on to get his pilots license, but after a few years, he decided that what he once thought was just a hobby was actually his real passion. He started a coin shop in Auburn in 1981.

At the time, Hansen bought from a mint in Utah. He then began to notice a decline in quality and they challenged him to do it himself once he made them aware of his findings. “I investigated what it would take and it’s a lot more complicated than most people realize,” Hansen said. “It took me a year-and-a-half, but we ended up building a mint and started striking coins and medallions. Since that time, we have grown into the country’s largest private mint.” The Northwest Territorial Mint has eight locations total. The largest factory they own is located in Dayton, Nevada. The other factories are located in Green Bay, Wisconsin; Tomball, Texas and Honolulu, Hawaii. There are also retail locations in Alexandria, Virginia and inside the Pentagon. The last two locations are the headquarters in Federal Way and a pick and pack facility in Auburn. There are around 300 employees total. “We were located down the hill in Au-

They have also made knives, cuff links, coasters, belt buckles, silver bullets and several more items with practical uses. Hansen’s favorite project was the President Reagan Memorial Medal that they were contracted for. “We were contracted by the President’s Library for President Reagan’s Memorial Medal that was passed out to people who were his staffers and at his funeral,” Hansen said. “We worked with the president on the wording and the image. We had to make the coin for six years since they had to be made within a few days of his death. It’s probably been one of the highlights of my career.” The company has contracts with multiple organizations in the United States, including the military and Boy Scouts. They are the makers of many of the medals adorning those in the military, the Medal of Honor, challenge coins for military personnel, the CIA and FBI, etc. “The most rewarding thing we do is design the medals that adorn the chests of our American men and women in uni-

Federal Way’s Town Square Park closed for year during redesign 2015-2016

Less than a year after its creation, Town Square Park will close for one year for a complete redesign. The park dreesign includes a larger lawn, a children’s play area, spray park, restrooms, basketball courts and a walking path — all encompassed in four acres for an estimated $1.5 million budget. Parks Director John Hutton and Parks Deputy Director Steve Ikerd were directed to take on the project in February after Mayor Jim Ferrell terminated contractor Nakano Associates because their designs for the park exceeded the city’s budget by about $1.7 million for a total of $3.4 million. There’s currently $1.6 million in the downtown redevelopment fund, the only source of funds for the park at this time.

theater feel” Nakano Associates proposed in their designs presented at the Jan. 31 City Council retreat. Instead, Hutton said the city’s design incorporates the natural slope of the park to create a similar space. Ikerd said a lot of Nakano’s features were very “high end,” which included concrete retaining walls, plazas and dramatic features. The city also plans to reuse elements from the current park. Up to 10 tables, umbrellas, barbecues, benches and planters will all be repurposed as well as the current lawn grass and basketball court material, known as slurry seal. Hutton said the new basketball courts — two half-courts, one regularsized and a smaller one for children — will be created by cutting the current slurry seal to form the arched shapes for the courts. “Basketball’s really popular there,” Hutton said. “It’s not meant to be an athletic park driver but we do want to leave them because they’re there and it has been popular.” The grass on the current half-acre lawn will be cut up and reused along …see PARK, PAGE 9

City of Federal Way Parks Director John Hutton Way twist. “Steve has been working really hard on cool concepts that would involve a cool experience, visually, as well as with a huge fun factor,” Hutton said. “An interactive fountain, if you will.” Hutton said there may be a cascading water feature where “say mom or dad brings their little kid to the park on an 85-degree day and the parents want to feel mist or regulate their experience on how wet they want to get. Adults can control their dampness at their own degree.” And because there’s a spray park, restrooms come with the package as they are required by King County Public Health. Near the restrooms and spray park, there’s space for a potential cafe in the future, however, it’s not represented in this phase. Ikerd and Hutton also identified two areas for a potential veteran’s memorial, which various veterans advocacy groups and local service groups will fund. The park design incorporates more shade than the current park by adding more than 100 trees that “will provide shade and color two times a year” with spring cherry trees and a mixture of maple, dogwood and serviceberry trees, according to the plans. On the northeast corner of the park will be an area for a covered shelter when it rains or when the sun beats down and there’s also space for a future stage for concerts or other events on the southwest corner. The southeast

corner will include a rain garden to enhance water quality but will also provide educational opportunities for children. “On the drawing there’s a future band shell,” Hutton said. “That may be something that would come in later.” Hutton said in the meantime, the Parks Department has a mobile stage that Ikerd built himself that will suffice. The city chose the park features based on feedback from 450 respondents from a survey the city recently conducted. “It’s going to be a great park,” Hutton said. “It’ll change the whole feel.”

areas on South 320th Street, while new hydroseed is planted to create a “great lawn” three times the size of the current one. The new lawn will be over one-anda-half acres, but Hutton said grass will also surround the play area, basketball courts and south end of the park. When the park opens next summer, it will include a a 66-foot long zip line for two children at a time, an octagonal climbing structure in addition to the regular playground equipment. The city will also save money by tying in the catch basins currently at the park. Town Square Park will retain two driveways but open a main walking entrance to the east for people who come from the Transit Center. And although the parking lot will be reduced from 50 to 40 spaces, Hutton said the Transit Center will be available for parking when the city hosts events such as movie nights in the summer or the holiday tree lighting in the winter. Because the city broke ground in June and doesn’t anticipate reopening until the summer of 2016, Hutton said there’s a 50/50 chance this year’s holiday tree lighting will be at the park. “We already have a live tree reserved, it’s 28-feet tall, and we’re hoping for growth,” he said. “It would be planted on-site, and there’s a possibility we could actually do [the tree lighting] there but I’m hesitant to say.” Hutton said it’s all a matter of whether the site will be ready for people, given that it will still be under construction. One of the most costly, yet exciting, proposed design features is the spray park. Between the play area and lawn will be a spray park somewhat similar to the water area at Town Square Plaza near Kent Station, but with a Federal

World Vision in Federal Way provides relief to the people of Nepal By ANDREW FICKES For the Mirror A devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake erupted in the south-central Asian country of Nepal between the Himalayas and Kathmandu, the capital on April 25.

A TWO-PERSON TEAM TRAVELS TO COUNTRY TO DOCUMENT RELIEF WORK

Many villages were flattened, historic buildings were reduced to rubble and thousands died or were injured. Meanwhile, thousands of miles away at World Vision headquarters in Federal Way, Ben Chandler, a video producer at World Vision, and Kathryn Reid, a humanitarian news editor for the global nonprofit, mobilized to go as a team to Nepal where they would transmit back video, still photography and news articles, documenting the need of the people there and how World Vision was meeting that need. “Current donors and potential donors were our audience,” Chandler said. Chandler’s videos and Reid’s news articles were dispersed across World Vision’s social media network, like YouTube, Facebook and the World Vision website. Chandler and Reid arrived in Nepal two days following the earthquake. They worked together, and sometimes separately, for two weeks before returning to Federal Way on May 10. “We started at the international airport in Kathmandu and did a good bit (of reporting) around there before setting out into the countryside,” Reid said. “It’s a very different situation when you get out in the urban areas where you have to park and walk and climb into the small villages in the mountains.” As Chandler and Reid ventured through the villages, documenting as they went, they said they saw pockets of poorly constructed, multi-story buildings that had collapsed like dominoes onto other buildings that were otherwise sturdy. “We were focusing on people and their needs,” Reid said. “I did still photography and wrote news stories to send back to headquarters and for direct mail to particular groups like churches and to World Vision partnerships in other countries.” …see NEPAL, PAGE 22

Other World Vision communications offices in places like Africa, Malaysia, Mexico, Australia and India sent teams to document. Though Federal Way is home base for World Vision — where it’s been located since moving operations from California in 1995 — the Christian humanitarian organization has global offices and a contingent of aid workers in nearly 100 countries, all with the objective to combat poverty and injustice the underprivileged suffer. For example, World Vision has more than 200 staff based in Nepal and for the past decade more than 70 projects have been underway, focusing on maternal and child health, education, child protection, livelihoods, water, sanitation and hygiene. “We have a World Vision base in Nepal,” said Amy Parodi, World Vision’s media relations director based in Federal Way. “We already know what the needs are and the language spoken there. In Nepal’s case, we’ve already done disaster preparedness in that area.” Parodi said that global offices respond to localized flooding and earthquake relief. In the case of a large disaster, a global response team is dispatched. Because of World Vision’s decade-

Reid, who has been with World Vision for nearly five years, said she loves nothing better than to talk to people about their needs and help them make those connections to help their needs be met. “There are things that we see that our donors don’t have the opportunity to see,” Reid said. “It’s a wonderful opportunity and responsibility to be able to connect them.” Chandler has been with World Vision for nearly three years. He said he loves to share people’s stories. “I see myself as the conduit between

those who need help and the people who can provide the need,” he said. Chandler said he will travel to Peru in less than two months to document work being done there. Reid said a return trip to Nepal is not in the plans, but she said she would love to return to see the progress being made there. “There are so many things that we saw,” Reid said. “I would like to see where it goes.” Parodi said that to date, World Vision has helped more than 65,000 people in Nepal. In recent weeks, Parodi said the monsoon season in Nepal has started. “It is more urgent than ever to begin the rebuilding process so families can have a more permanent place to stay,” Parodi said. “World Vision has been working in Nepal for more than a decade and will be walking alongside the people of Nepal, transitioning from relief to long-term efforts in the coming months.”

Steel Lake Park also includes horseshoe pits across the street, open lawn areas, a sand volleyball pit and swimming.
