Festival strikes balance between old roots, new fun By JIM MARSH For The Beachcomber

Vashon’s summer festival, currently known as the Strawberry Festival, has been going on in some form since 1909. It is common to hear islanders greet each other in July by saying “Happy Festival,” like it is a holiday. It is a holiday. Islanders put on this massive celebration so they can show off their talents, experience new things, eat great food, dance in the streets and carouse with friends and family. Great memories are created during Strawberry Festival; it is a holiday that has something for everyone. Use this guide to plan your weekend so you get a chance to do it all. Vashon has received a lot of press recently for being such a beautiful place. It is said that people on Vashon are inspired

by this beauty, for the island is home to an extraordinary number of accomplished artists. This year, Vashon artists take center stage and are located in and around the Village Green. Local artists plan all year for Strawberry Festival, so make sure you take a tour of the Vashon artists’ area to find your next favorite piece. Music is also everywhere during Strawberry Festival,

as it is on Vashon year-round. Each year, we have more musicians that want to play than we have stages, so we’ve added more music. New this year will be a hip-hop concert on Friday night in Ober Park featuring Seattle rapper Draze. Hours are also expanded on stages throughout the weekend. Music will be playing in Ober Park in front of the library, at Pandora’s Box, in

the Beer Garden, at the Village Green and at the U.S. Bank Stage. Several restaurants and bars host bands as well. And what is music without dancing? We have street dances at the U.S. Bank Stage Friday and Saturday nights, as well as swing dancing in front of Sporty’s on Saturday and the Beer Garden is a great place to show off your moves. The intersection of Bank Road and Vashon Highway is also where dance flash mobs and scheduled performances will happen. Check out the guide in this paper for music and dance schedules. 5:30 p.m. The Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Museum will host the Strawberry Festival Dinner at the Heritage Museum. Goes until 8 p.m. 6 p.m. Beer Garden opens at the north end of the festival grounds. The garden remains open until midnight. 7 p.m. Live music begins at the Beer Garden. 7 p.m. Music begins at the VARSA Youth Stage featuring Seattle hip-hop artist Draze. 9 p.m.

Live music begins at the Street Dance Stage at U.S. Bank and continues until midnight.

Saturday, July 16 7 a.m.

The Sportsmen’s Club’s all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast begins in the Vashon IGA parking lot. It is open until 11 a.m.

8:30 a.m. The Bill Burby Inspirational Fun Run and Walk begins with the 10K run at the intersection of Vashon Highway and Gorsuch Road. 5K Run and Walk participants will begin their run at 8:45 a.m.

10 a.m. Vendor booths along Vashon Highway open to sell food and fun items. Booths close at 6 p.m. 11 a.m. The Grand Parade takes place on Vashon Highway between Puget Sound Energy and Ober Park. Noon Kids’ Zone activities open at the north end of the festival grounds. Noon Beer Garden opens. Live music from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m., when the garden closes. 12:30 p.m. At the conclusion of the parade, Master Kabuki artist Mary Ohno and students will perform Japanese Bon Odori dance at the main intersection of Bank Road and Vashon Highway. 1 p.m.

Parade offers diverse snapshot of island community Everyone loves a parade, or so the saying goes, and the quintessential Strawberry Festival tradition will kick off Vashon’s summer on Saturday morning. As in years past, a children’s parade will precede the Grand Parade. Festival-goers should keep an eye out for perennial favorites like the Thriftway shopping cart drill team, ukulele band and antique tractors, as well as floats representing community groups, organizations and sports teams. The parade will start just south of town, it will proceed through the heart of town center before coming to an end near Ober Park. Performances will take place at various locations along the route.

Islanders walk, ride bikes and pull wagons along the parade route. The parade offers a wide variety of local groups and organizations, including the island’s garden club, grocery store clerks and radio station.

Mary Ohno, a master Kabuki artist, will lead a group in a Bon Odori — a simple folk dance done to honor ancestors. Parade vehicles will park along the north end of festival grounds for up-close viewing after the their trek through town, and once again this year, the Grand Marshal will choose a favorite float — announcing the winner and presenting the trophy from the Ober Park stage.

All invited for fun at Burby With Strawberry Festival fun and food in abundance all weekend, the Bill Burby Inspirational 10K Run and 5K Run/Walk offers a chance to burn off the festival calories before the heat of the day. On the morning of Saturday, July 16, dozens will lace up their tennis shoes for the 36th year. The race is in honor of Bill Burby, a beloved teacher and coach at Vashon Island High School who died in 1989. The race honors his dedication to island youth sports and healthy life choices. Registration fees are $35 for adults and $20 for children. Fees go to support high school athletic teams and provide the annual Bill Burby Wellness Scholarship to a high school senior who has demonstrated a healthy lifestyle. This year, the top girl and boy finishers in the 9 and under and 10- to 14-year-old categories will receive a 10-visit punch card to the Recess Lab, Vashon’s new bouldering gym. Prizes for adults in the 10K and 5K runs will be $100 gift certificate

Kids’ Zone: Time for festival fun

Art at Village Green A selection of the island’s extensive and diverse population of artists will show and sell their work during this year’s festival at the Village Green. With a wide variety of mediums represented, including woodwork, photography, pottery, jewelry, mosaics, textile art and blown glass, to name a just a few, there is something for everyone. Whether for personal use or gifts, all purchases will support Vashon’s local artist community.

Again this year, the Strawberry Festival will include a host of activities for kids, including a climbing wall, giant bubbles and a big slide A zip line will also provide plenty of fun, along with other surprises. The area will be located north of town right across from Ober Park, which will be home to the Youth Stage. Other youth activities will also be in the area, creating a central area for families as well as youth out adventuring on their own. Honor festival history with dinner at museum The Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Association (VMIHA) will host the Heritage Museum’s Festival Dinner on Friday night, a picnic-style dinner that will feature live music from island band Poultry in Motion and a silent auction. The community event draws 250 people each year, VMIHA President Deb Dammann said, and is a fundraiser for VMIHA. The event will run from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 15, on the museum lawn. Admission is $20, $10 for kids 10 and under and free for those under 6 years of age. Tickets are available at the Vashon Bookshop, brownpapertickets.com and the museum, which is open Wednesday through Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.

The Tom Stewart Memorial Classic Car Parade will take place at 11:45 a.m. on Sunday and will feature unique and vintage cars from across the Pacific Northwest. Attendees will be treated to classics as well as one-of-a-kind rides that will be parked throughout town for up-close viewing when the parade is done. This moving automotive exhibition will start at Vashon Center for the Arts and bring the cars north on Vashon Highway to 178th Street at the Vashon Theatre, where they’ll head west. From there,

they’ll head north on 100th Avenue past the Sugar Shack to Bank Road and turn east, bringing them to the four-way stop at Vashon Highway. Each vehicle will then head back south through town and park. Voice of Vashon will announce the parade from its studio front near Zombiez. The best viewing will be along Vashon Highway from Bank Road to the theater and at the four-way intersection in town. The parade is a memorial to the late businessman and owner of Misty Isle Farms, Tom Stewart.

Fuel the fun with a pancake breakfast On Saturday and Sunday mornings, Vashon’s Sportsmen’s Club will carry on a delicious festival tradition with a pancake breakfast for a good cause. From 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. to noon Sunday, volunteers will serve pancakes, strawberries, sausage and beverages in the Vashon Market IGA parking lot. The meal is $8, or $5 for children under 10 and seniors. Both cash and credit cards will be accepted. Proceeds will benefit the Sportsmen’s Education Association, which provides scholarships for graduating high school seniors. As an added bonus this year, the club will display the Miss Thriftway Hydroplane, a restored 1955 hydroplane raceboat that participates in races to this day. Mini hydroplanes will also be passed out to the kids while supplies last.

From Point A to Point B: Getting around at Festival Shuttle service

Road closures

Organizers recommend taking advantage of the shuttle and Metro buses. Shuttle stops have signs, and visitors can wave the shuttle down if in a safe place for it to pull over. The north-end shuttle runs from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. The shuttle will attempt to meet ferries, pick up passengers along the way and drop off at Ober Park. Return trips pick up at Ober Park. The last shuttle leaving Ober Park back to the ferry will be at 6:30 p.m. Saturday and 5:30 p.m. Sunday. The south-end shuttle runs from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. It will meet arriving ferries and drop visitors at the Vashon Senior Center then proceed to Agren Park and back. Return passengers can catch the shuttle at the senior center on Bank Road or the Chevron. The last shuttle leaving the senior center for the south-end ferry will be at 6:30 p.m. Saturday and 5:30 p.m. Sunday. The cost for the shuttle is $1 each way per person. Children under 5 are free. Please bring exact change.

Vashon Highway is closed through town during Strawberry Festival. Traffic is routed onto Cove Road, 107th Avenue, Bank Road, 103rd Avenue, 100th Avenue and 178th Street. 100th is for northbound traffic only, while 103rd is for southbound traffic. For a detour map, see vashonchamber.com.

Bus service The regular Saturday Metro bus schedule will be in effect, and the buses will follow a detour around town. Times will vary slightly from the regular schedule. There is no Metro bus service on Vashon on Sundays. Get complete ferry and bus schedules online.

Parking and permits Those who drive to town will find parking scarce, and many roads to town will be closed much of the weekend. A limited number of disabled parking permits will allow some to park closer to town. Call the chamber of commerce at 463-6217 to obtain one.

Festival-goers will find a literal smorgasbord of food, souvenirs, services and more along the vendor strip on Vashon Highway, north of the four-way stop in town. Booths selling clothing, art, household items and services will be open for business throughout the weekend. Look for the “Homegrown Vendor” signs on booths that offer island-made products or represent local organizations. Included in the mix will be food vendors offering a variety of snack, meal and treat options. Tempting bites will also be available from island businesses such as Snapdragon, Vashon Island Baking Company, Orca Eats and Patty’s Tamales.

For the first time in Strawberry Festival history, revelers will have the chance to learn how to swing dance before the Saturday night street dance with the Portage Fill Big Band and The Great Divide. Islander Candy McCullough

will teach the free lesson at 6 p.m. Saturday in front of Sporty’s and will cover the basic steps of East Coast swing. After the hour-long lesson, attendees will be able to show off what they’ve learned and cut loose to swinging tunes.

MUSIC Live, local music at Strawberry Festival includes dozens of bands that play music spanning nearly every genre from blues, soul and rock ‘n’ roll, to country, big band and classical guitar. When it comes to music, the festival delivers entertainment that calls for toe-tapping fun on eight stages throughout town. Most of the acts are homegrown, though some performers come from

other parts of the region. Several are returning favorites, but many are new to Vashon. A first-ever youth concert in Ober Park on Friday night will be a part of the scene. Not to be missed are the street dances, when Portage Fill and other bands with big sounds will get you swinging. Hang on to this handy guide and enjoy Vashon’s rich musical traditions. Loose Change 7:00 p.m.-11:00 p.m. A favorite of islanders for many years, this band entertains with non-stop danceable tunes. The band’s powerful front man Troy Kindred is backed by a tight 13-piece band that includes the big organ sound of keyboards, an inspired lead guitar, solid bass and drums and a dynamic 5-piece horn section. And let’s not forget the four female backup singers. The sheer size of Loose Change makes for a big sound and a great on-stage look.

Draze will headline the Strawberry Festival’s first-ever youth concert on Friday night.

The Van Redeker Band 9:00 p.m.-12:00 a.m. The Van Redeker Band performs dynamic interpretations of songs by some of music’s greatest songwriters, including The Beatles, Annie Lennox, Cream, Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash, as well as originals by veteran songwriter Daryl Redeker. The group plays across a wide palette of musical genres and is known for its energetic performance style and lush harmonies. The band is Redeker on lead guitar, Sam Van Fleet on guitar, keyboard and vocals, Sara Van Fleet on bass and, for the festival, Dodd Johnson on drums and percussion.

Intelligent Design & Baron 1 7:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m. Intelligent Design (ID) and Baron 1 are two upcoming local musicians from the Seattle area. ID takes his influences from the hip-hop and EDM (electronic dance music) culture found in the various places he has lived around the world. Baron takes his inspiration from Seattle street art and hip hop music. The two have come together to give audiences an experience,

through their mixes and original music, to invoke all the senses and blend reality and the imagination of listeners.

Max Moore 7:45 p.m.-8:15 p.m. Max Moore is a 16-year-old musician and producer from Vashon. He started writing music on his computer in middle school and has since begun to incorporate instrumentation into his compositions, influenced from genres such as hip hop, indie and pop music.

Draze 10:00 p.m.-11:00 p.m. Headlining the Strawberry Festival’s first-ever youth concert, Draze is a hip-hop emcee and musician emerging from the vibrant Seattle scene — fueled and building on the legacy of several mainstream Seattle artists. He was introduced to hip hop on the streets of Seattle, found his passion in creating music and progressed as an emcee, soon becoming one of the most respected hip-hop artists in the Northwest. Draze credits influences like Nas, Outkast, Dr. Dre and Bob Marley for the depth in his sound.

Dive into rich funky, jazzy hip hop-rooted textures woven with conscious and delicately crafted lyrics. Originally from Harlem, Ralph Reign now resides on Vashon. Made up of 18 current or former island residents, Portage Fill is a classic big band with full horn and sax sections, backed up by a rhythm section, and featuring two vocalists. Portage Fill is well known for its selection of swing tunes from the 1930s and 40s, but is versatile enough to work in some blues, Latin or even rock ‘n’ roll numbers to put on a show for all ages and musical tastes.

Rumor Has It 2:30 p.m.-3:15 p.m. Rumor Has It combines indigenous rhythms with its signature string-band rock. Always a vocal band, it is adding an indigenous vibe by following the sound of a different drummer. Guitarist Roger Taylor; Steve Amsden on many guitars, banjo, and citern; Paul Colwell; Sarah Perlman; Gordy Ryan on percussion and vocals and Gen Amsden on vocals combine to create a band full of voices.

Delilah Pearl & The Mantarays 4:00 p.m.-4:45 p.m. Put on your dancing shoes, your skinny ties, those sartorial dark-rimmed glasses, and let’s dance. From Vashon Island, Delilah Pearl and the Mantarays craft a signature sound and a style all their own. Throw in a bit of 1940s hepcat jazz, a heap of modern soul and R&B, a smoky torch ballad, and there you have the simmer audiences are looking for. Always dressed to the nines, the band has roots in everything from jazz to rock to soul to bossa nova to the avant-garde.

Subconscious Population 5:30 p.m.-6:15 p.m. Everyone on Vashon knows Subconscious Population, a band that has always been a huge part of the island’s musical and spiritual history. The original band dates back to 1980, with different members coming and going, but always centered around front man Ron Hook. Santana was a huge influence in the beginning, but Sub-Pop found its own vibe that blended reggae, jazz, blues, rock and country together.

a blend of classic country, 1970s folk and indie rock. With only a quarter century behind him, Alex’s poignant lyrics ponder the highs and lows of existence through Americana-tinted lenses.

Animals of Grace 1:45 p.m.-2:15 p.m. Animals of Grace is an alt-folk duo based in Seattle, led by innovative 12-string guitar player and classically trained vocalist Erika Lundahl. Together with percussionist Doug Indrick, Animals of Grace crafts a musical experience that readily shifts from driving exhilaration to sublime and emotional.

Catbird 2:30 p.m.-3:00 p.m. CatBird is Mary G L Shackelford and Jim Burke, a husband-and-wife team who have been playing music together for 38 years. Whether playing old-time or venturing into some jazz, their tight playing comes from a deep-seated natural give-and-take that has developed over their years of playing together. With Mary playing lead on mandolin and Jim accompanying with guitar and banjo, their music will get your feet tapping and your hands clapping.

Andy James & Rebekah Kuzma 3:15 p.m.-3:45 p.m. Andy James and Rebekah Kuzma combine their unique talents as an inspiring duo. They make heartfelt music covering the likes of Tin Pan Alley and Harry Nilsson. The duo has been singing together for a few years now and enjoys performing music with tight and interesting harmonies. Some of their favorites include Stephin Merritt and The Everly Brothers. Andy plays both electric and acoustic guitar and banjo. Rebekah plays mandolin and tenor guitar.

DrSputnik 4:00 p.m.-4:30 p.m.

Manuel Monestrel 7:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. Manuel Monestel has recorded 16 CDs with his wildly successful Costa Rican band “Cantoamérica.” Since the 1980s, he has been researching and reinventing Limonese Calypso, a genre of the Afro-Costa Rican culture influenced by Walter Ferguson. He and his band are often credited with popularizing Limonese Calypso throughout Costa Rica and Central America.

DrSputnik is Philip Royal playing fingerstyle guitar and Sam McKinstry playing banjo, fiddle, guitar and upright bass. McKinstry is Royal’s nephew and teaches music to deaf children in Portland, Oregon. Together they lay out some of the old tunes.

Annie O’Neill 4:45 p.m.-5:15 p.m.

Annie O’Neill is a Seattle-based singer-songwriter specializing in laying down rhythmic grooves on her acoustic guitar or belting out the blues with a full band. She is a dynamic performer with powerhouse vocals to back it up.

Emree Franklin 6:15 p.m.-6:45 p.m. Emree Franklin is a rising 21-year-old singer-songwriter and recording artist from Friday Harbor, Washington, whose captivating voice and poignant lyrics transcend her age. Growing up as the daughter of master falconers in the San Juan Islands, Emree’s signature storytelling draws from her life experiences, writing openly about emotions that are always real and brutally honest. It is that authenticity combined with driving rhythms and contagious melodies that have captured the attention of music lovers, as she continues to build her fan base, extending live performances to Nashville, San Francisco, Seattle and Los Angeles.

Marcus Family Band 1:45 p.m.-2:30 p.m. The Marcus Family band has been playing music for many generations. Dan and Michael are life-long musicians who are pleased to share the stage with the next generation of Marcus musicians: Max and Nate. The family is joined by honorary member Tim Volpicelli Marcus.

MDM Trio 2:45 p.m.-3:30 p.m. Guitarist Michael Whitmore and saxophonist Dianne Krouse, hosts of Voice of Vashon’s Friday Morning Scramble, are joined by bassist Michael Marcus. Although they have played together in other settings, this is their debut performance as a trio. Expect the unexpected.

Some Hat 3:45 p.m.-4:30 p.m. Lifelong friends Phil Rosenbaum and Jim Ferrari started their musical collaboration nearly 30 years ago. Playing original compositions of smooth jazz and blues at multiple island events, they always leave their fans wanting more. Starting in 1996, Some Hat performed at nine Strawberry Festivals; after pursuing different musical directions, they are finally back.

3:15 p.m.-3:45 p.m. Mysterious, captivating, ever-so-talented, this man will lay down his funky grooves and make you forget about your troubles. Front man for over 30 years for the legendary island band Subconscious Population, Ron has earned the respect of many people. His spiritual guidance has been the light for many, both young and old. His music? Ask anyone, and they will tell you how inspiring it is.

Riverbend 5:45 p.m.-6:30 p.m. Riverbend, the popular island band of Paul Colwell, Rochelle Munger, Peter Larsen, Dave Lang, Cliff Simpson and Chuck Roehm, will play at Strawberry Festival 2016. With each band member bringing experiences from local bands The Garage Boys, The Colwell Brothers and How’s-Bayou, this band has a wide breadth of musical experience and talent sure to please.

Sum Band 4:00 p.m.-4:30 p.m. An up-and-coming group consisting of three members — Chai Ste. Marie on lead vocals, Josh DeHaven on rhythm guitar and vocals and Vor Hostetler on bass — all members are homegrown on Vashon Island. Husky vocals, funky bass lines and reggae guitar riffs make for a unique sound.

OneNiteStand 2:00 p.m.-2:45 p.m. OneNiteStand is gaining ground with more rocking tunes and incredible vocals by Terri Cole. This band is nothing but rock and blues with an emphasis on classic rock tunes, as well as some originals sprinkled into their repertoire. They’ve all got blues chops, from growling it to flat-out rockin’.

Gypsy Wolf 3:15 p.m.-4:00 p.m. From the mind of Wesley Brenner comes a world of magic brought to life by the wild wizardry of Bob Krinsky. With the help of musical brethren Pat Fereday, Henry Sondi, Nick Hyde and Tanner Aaron, Gypsy Wolf begs all to come dance in the magic mist of folk and rootsy reggae.

vanNorman 4:30 p.m.-5:15 p.m. Vashon’s legendary drummer, Fletcher Andrews, teams up with brothers Darren and Chuck to form the group vanNorman. These three musicians — each with a distinct perspective in music — collectively draw inspiration from every decade of rock, creating a completely modern and new sound. Frontman Chuck plays guitar, sings and solos over the rhythm section forged by Fletcher and Darren.

Sarah Christine 5:45 p.m.-6:30 p.m. Sarah Christine is a visionary songwriter and soulful singer who delivers uplifting messages of empowerment, positivity and connection. She draws inspiration from the beauty and healing energy of nature along with her passion to celebrate life.

Goodnight Mush 1:00 p.m.-1:30 p.m. Goodnight Mush is a fully functioning, live, vegetarian rock band. The current configuration is a three-piece outfit consisting of Ryne Pauley on electric guitar, Gundy on drums and Ryan Jamess on bass and vocals. As for trying to describe the sounds these three lads conjure, think MC5, the Kinks, the Replacements and Creedence, with extra old-fashioned protopunk attitude and bluesy rock ‘n’ roll energy.

Gregg Curry & Rick Dahms 1:45 p.m.-2:15 p.m. Gregg Curry’s songs dig deep into the roots of American music to create his original sound. He has traveled America, absorbing influences from rock, soul and blues to country, bluegrass and gospel. Drawing from hundreds of original songs and numerous recordings, he seamlessly knits those American traditions into his unique musical tapestry of lyrical, catchy tunes. Joining Gregg will be Rick Dahms on guitar and vocals.

Jason Everett 2:30 p.m.-3:00 p.m. Jason Everett (Mister E) is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger and producer who plays a variety of stringed and percussive instruments, including his custom Conklin seven-string fretless bass guitar, electric upright bass and electric sitar of his own design.

Ken Jacobsen 4:45 p.m.-5:15 p.m. Ken Jacobsen is a guitarist, cellist and multi-instrumentalist who has played and taught many different styles of music. He is currently living in Tacoma, but still teaches lessons on Vashon and is looking forward to bringing his electric cello, looper and a variety of instruments to Strawberry Festival for a journey through ambient space, around the planet and back out to the outer reaches of the improv universe.

Nick Hyde 5:30 p.m.-6:00 p.m. Nick Hyde is a born-and-raised islander who has been playing music since he was in elementary school, but it has been only in the last few years that he has found a passion for singing, songwriting and performance. He is influenced and inspired by all genres of music from classical, to jazz improv, to blues and folk.

John Browne 6:15 p.m.-6:45 p.m. Progressing from college sophomore to folk-music groupie-worshiper in early 1960s Miami, John’s musical career has been what he jokingly refers to as one long, downward spiral to this present time. As part of the Ph Phactor Jugband in 1966, John opened for a number of notable performers, including Frank Zappa, Lenny Bruce, Dan Hicks, The Dead, The Doors, The Quicksilver Messenger Service and others.

This act has a ton of energy, heart and talent that makes for an engaging, powerful show.

Cherrywood Station 7:45 p.m.-8:15 p.m. Cherrywood Station is islanders Gus and Camille Reeves. The duo met in Portland, Oregon, and, after singing gospel tunes together acapella the first night they met, they never stopped collaborating. Both Gus and Camille are prolific songwriters who carry the torch of American music by performing classic and original numbers with the acoustic sounds of soul, country, blues and folk.

blends the rootsy foundation of country with the emotional honesty of rock ‘n’ roll. Originally from Texas, Allison’s rich voice has just the right amount of grit and warmth. Bill Brown & The Kingbees 7:00 p.m.-11:00 p.m. Since last year’s Strawberry Festival, Bill Brown and the Kingbees have been performing all over Puget Sound. Folks love Bill’s crisp harmonica and no-holds-barred vocals. The five-piece band featuring John Gaborit on guitar, Tony Handy on drums, Leslie Shelton on bass and Steve Minzel on keys plays a variety of music, from old rock ‘n’ roll to blues, disco, jazz and slow songs that melt lovers’ hearts.

Rooster plays its own unique take on an eclectic mix of rock, blues, pop, new wave, fusion, soul and funk from the 1960s though today. Wailing guitar, swirling organ, thundering bass and pulsating drums ensure you’ll be up out of your seat and dancing. Founders Rick Doussett, on guitar and vocals, and Ken Widmeyer, on keyboard, this year added new members Andy Dousett on bass and vocals and Stephen Cooper on drums.

1:45 p.m.-2:05 p.m. Maijah Sanson-Frey is a 16-year-old singer-songwriter with a passion for love, music and stars. You may have seen her perform at many of Vashon’s events, including the I Am Vashon Guitar Project. Maijah has many musical inspirations, including Amy Winehouse, Adele, Lana del Rey, Alt-J, Hozier, and, of course, The Beatles.

Duo Finelli

A fixture of the Vashon music scene, this four-piece band plays only occasionally and brings brand new music to the show every time. With Jon Whalen on rhythm guitar and Dorsey Davis on bass, the two share the lead vocals and song-writing duties. Longtime island rocker Richard Lipke and up-and-comer Emory Medima-Boyajian round out the FieldHands sound from punchy to rolling and many plateaus in between.

Gregg Curry & Ragged Glory 4:15 p.m.-5:00 p.m. Ragged Glory has evolved a sound around Gregg Curry’s original songs that is uniquely theirs — a sort of rock-and-roll minstrel show/tent revival that mixes the sacred, the profane and the in-between into a musical stew, new and familiar at once. Their concerts are energetic and explore a varied landscape of moods and feelings. The tunes are catchy; the words will alternate between making you laugh and giving you pause; the music will make you want to dance.

Jonah Cole 4:45 p.m.-5:00 p.m. Jonah Cole got his first guitar for his second birthday and started lessons at age 7. His principal musical influences are Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Mike Doughty, Flock of Seagulls and his teacher, Daryl Redeker. He has performed for classes at Chautauqua Elementary School and is excited for his debut performance at the Strawberry Festival.

20 Eyes 5:00 p.m.-5:30 p.m. From old-school punk classics to new covers and original songs, the three teenagers that make up 20 Eyes — Angelica Odom on guitar and vocals, Forest Bowden on bass and vocals and Jacob Bowden on drums and backup vocals — set the bar for rocking the house. With influences ranging from the Misfits and Ramones, to The White Stripes and Johnny Cash, these young musicians play live music with a ferocity and passion rarely seen.

A Street Blues 6:15 p.m.-6:35 p.m. A Street Blues is a charismatic youth blues band from Washington with a flair for combining hard-rocking blues and contemporary blues standards. Band members Ava Adams, 14; Christian Taylor, 13; Brook Jones, 15; and Croix Stone, 17, have a unique chemistry and musicality that’s remarkable for musicians so young. Ava’s soulful vocals accompanied by powerful instrumentals make for a brilliant juxtaposition of hard rock and smooth blues.

The Mystic Vines 6:40 p.m.-7:00 p.m.

Duo Finelli is a pair of funny ladies presenting a clown show with circus antics, live music and classic style comedy. Based on Vashon Island, they love to travel the world and perform.

The Mystic Vines is an American alternative, funk-fusion band. Formed in February 2015, the band’s lineup consists of lead vocalist Halley Adams, guitarist Zachary Mitchell, drummer Jack Walker and bassist Gabe Gadbow, all from Gig Harbor, Washington.

Mallory Breen is a 17-year-old alternative indie-inspired singer-songwriter. She took up the guitar when she was 8 years old and immediately fell in love with it. Recently, she has begun singing and writing her own music.

The School of Rock house band is chosen through an audition process where members are held to a high standard both musically and culturally. They act as role models to other students and play at a variety of events, but more than anything, these kids rock songs ranging from classic rock to modern selections.

RISE & RISK 3:40 p.m.-4:00 p.m. RISE (Rock Island String Education) is a program for third- through fifth-graders wanting to learn fiddle or guitar. Vashon-based RISK (Rock Island String Kollective) is one of few multi-generational string ensembles playing traditional, folk and rock music. Featuring a range of string instruments, RISK provides public performances at island schools and senior centers. Both groups have performed at the Folklife Festival for the past two years.

9:00 p.m.-12:00 a.m. at the U.S. Bank Stage The all-islander band was formed in the early 1980s and played locally for many years before hitting the big time. The band has opened for Asleep at the Wheel, Charlie Daniels and many other well-known acts. Playing a mix of country rock, Texas swing and straight-up rock, their arrangements are sure to rock the street dance.

The Rumble Strips 11:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m. The Rumble Strips play hot, oversized dance music from West Africa, the Caribbean, New Orleans and anywhere else. Expect horns, percussion and rhythms to shake your feet loose.

Jon Yoon 12:30 p.m.-1:00 p.m. Jon Yoon is a ukulele acoustic-pop artist from Seattle by way of Chicago. He is often entertaining Pike Place Market tourists with ukulele versions of popular songs and originals.

Will van Spronson (Super8) 1:15 p.m.-1:45 p.m. Will van Spronsen, who performs and records as the Super8, is an idiosyncratic singer-songwriter who lives on Vashon. He is sometimes joined by his son, Boots, on keyboards and vocals. The music of the Super8 falls somewhere in the sphere of Americana and the balladeers.

played music together along with Rick’s brother, Tim. One day when it was time to play, there was no Tim. “Tim couldn’t make it,” Rick said. Fast-forward a few years, Doug and Rick are both living on Vashon, but Tim couldn’t make it.

Sun City Players 1:30 p.m.-2:15 p.m. Come enjoy the sweet acoustic sound of Sun City Players. Laura Caldwell will charm you with her heart-felt melodies of some familiar pop and folk favorites — covering artists such as James Taylor, Tracy Chapman and Paul Simon. Al Carness is an accomplished and seasoned guitarist. He has played with numerous groups and solo artists in Portland since leaving the music world in Los Angeles in 1995.

Sealth 2:30 p.m.-3:15 p.m. Sealth plays everything from the Mamas and the Papas, to Led Zeppelin, to Van Halen, to the Head and the Heart. The high-energy rock duo incorporates washboard, harmonica and kazoo along with their acoustic guitars to create classic rock covers with a folky, Americana twist.

2:00 p.m.-2:30 p.m.

The Flying Mandolinis 1:00 p.m.-1:45 p.m. The Flying Mandolinis create beautiful music out of anticipated chaos. If you think that mandolin music is squeaky and grating, these seasoned musicians have turned it into an orchestral treat. Imagine six mandolins in three different sizes, supported by a bass, playing some of your favorite tunes.

Some’tet 2:30 p.m.-3:15 p.m. In April 2013, guitarist and composer Michael Whitmore began a weekly residency at the Snapdragon Café on Vashon. These Sunday night jams grew into a full-blown ensemble with Barry Cooper on trumpet, Dianne Krouse on sax, Patrick Christie on upright bass, Dodd Johnson on percussion and jazz vocalist Christine Goering. The overall sound is mellow, almost West-Coast cool.

Joshua Powell & The Great Train Robbery 4:00 p.m.-4:45 p.m. Caught between the dualistic disenchanting scenes of Buffet cover bands and high school hardcore in Florida, a young Joshua Powell transplanted to the Midwest. Now a loudening voice in the Indiana independent music community, Powell has carved out a niche in his new home by setting his hyper-literate lyrics to broad swaths of psych-folk.

Lost as a teen on a hike in the Adirondack Mountains, Jon Whalen’s younger brother vowed that not only would he survive, he would never laugh at his brother’s music again. His younger brother has not been to one of Jon’s shows since 1986; he simply did not trust himself. Jon will break out a solo set of fresh tunes that he’s been shopping around trying to score an independent film soundtrack gig.

Little Deer 2:45 p.m.-3:15 p.m. Little Deer is Lawson Cannon on guitar, Alex Sturbaum on accordion and Brian Lindsay on fiddle. Together, they have over 30 year’s experience in the Celtic and American Old-Time genres. They play a delightful mix of fast dance tunes, slow aires and the occasional spirited song.

Kristin Chambers 11:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Kristin Chambers is often described as a chameleon songstress,” as her original creations shift seamlessly from genre to genre: bluesy ballads and folksy anthems to spirited pop songs. Still, Kristin’s writing and voice remain focused in a style that is uniquely her own — unpretentious, soulful, relatable, hopeful and instantly recognizable.

Released From Quiet 3:30 p.m.-4:15 p.m. The groove-centric rock duo is Chris Kendziorski on vocals and guitar and Mary Yeager on percussion. The foundations of RFQ began on two continents: Chris’ roots in Japan and Mary’s in Alaska. An undeniable magnetism pulled these two together, and they‘ve called the Pacific Northwest home for 15 years. Their songs offer hope and warning, lullaby and alarm, encouragement and caution.

Beige Radio 1:00 p.m.-1:45 p.m. Sitting at under one year of age, Beige Radio is still a very new project for Wes Gonzalez of the now-defunct local band New Lungs. The project has been largely rooted in the themes surrounding his previous band’s indefinite hiatus. Beige Radio is currently Wes Gonzalez, Drew Pine, Rich Clark-Coller, Antoine Martel and Nathan McMillan.

Jamie Nova Sky 2:15 p.m.-3:00 p.m. Jamie Nova set out to create the music that was manifesting itself within her soul. In 2010, she recorded and released her first album. In 2012, Jamie added guitar virtuoso JT Phillips to her line up, adding depth and color to her music. Taking it to a deeper level in 2014, she found the final members: Rick Friel on bass and Christopher Kiger on percussion.

He toured and opened for Pearl Jam, Oasis, Cheap Trick and Elliott Smith. The Sugarmakers are Rick Friel on bass, Faith E. Vicious on percussion and backups and Eric Eagle on the drums.

Rachel Harrington 12:15 p.m.-12:45 p.m. A new full-time Vashon Island resident, Rachel Harrington has released four critically acclaimed albums to date. Best described as gothic Americana, her songs have won accolades at various esteemed contests, including Sisters Folk Festival and Merlefest.

Sundae & Mr. Goessl 1:00 p.m.-1:30 p.m. Sundae & Mr. Goessl are a husband-wife duo reviving great composers like Duke Ellington, the Gershwin brothers and Cole Porter. Kate Voss stands in as front woman with a sweet, inviting sound. Jason Goessl keeps the party going with his impossibly layered guitar parts, playing bass, melodic lines and chords at the same time.

The Gin Joints 1:45 p.m.-2:15 p.m. A unique project that revisits the music from the Tin Pan Alley jazz era to classic country and rock ‘n’ roll, The Gin Joints’ upright bassist Birch Pereira and his relaxed, Chet Baker-inspired vocal style takes center stage. The band features a revolving cast of sought-after Seattle musicians that draw from the repertoires of Fats Waller, Hank Williams, Louis Armstrong, Patsy Cline and Ricky Nelson.

Shasta Bree 2:30 p.m.-3:00 p.m. Shasta Bree is a singer-songwriter influenced by such artists as Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin, Harry Nilsson, Gillian Welch, BB King and Etta James. Shasta’s music rests in the elegant shade of Americana.

11:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Beatlemania is alive and stronger than ever with many groups performing the timeless songs of John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison. From the Royal Albert Hall, to music stages large and small, seats are filled with Beatles fans young and old. Three Beatlemania fans have put their talent and love for this music together and created the newest, most compelling Beatles band yet.

Once Upon A Tuesday 12:45 p.m.-1:30 p.m. Lead vocalist and guitar player Tyke Reasy and bassistvocalist Keith McNeal began writing together shortly after meeting while in the Navy. Since being paired at an open mic with, and subsequently adding, Sandy Johnson on drums and percussion in 2012, they have steadily continued to assemble an impressive catalogue of their own songs. Once Upon A Tuesday will take you on a musical excursion that bends and blends genres into something unique.

Willie & The Whips 2:00 p.m.-2:45 p.m. Seattle’s Will Morgan has played guitar and sung since he was 10 years old. Will formed Willie & the Whips in 2013 with a mission to learn and transmit the blues and, thereby, make new music. The band is inspired by Mississippi Fred McDowell, RL Burnside, Jr Kimbrough, Johnny Shines, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Muddy Waters, Jimmy Reed and Y’all.

Poultry in Motion 3:15 p.m.-5:15 p.m. A Poultry In Motion show is like having a freight train come roaring through your backyard barbecue. Just grab your hat and go for the ride. Surely there will be a lot of laughing, a lot of foot-stomping and lots and lots of dancing. They will be bringing their unique brand of swampy Cajun blues, gospel, R&B, country, folk and rock ‘n’ roll to close down the Beer Garden Sunday.

12:15 p.m.-12:35 p.m. Sam Profit is a 14-year-old Vashon resident. He started taking guitar lessons four years ago and made his Strawberry Festival debut last year. He plays the acoustic guitar and enjoys classic rock and alternative music. His favorite artists are David Bowie, Neil Young and Led Zeppelin.

Emmett Sherman 12:40 p.m.-1:00 p.m. Emmett Sherman is a 13-year-old born and raised islander. He started playing guitar and taking lessons from Daryl Redeker in January of 2014. His main musical influences are Angus Young, Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page.

Kate Atwell 1:45 p.m.-2:05 p.m. Kate Atwell is a young singer-songwriter from Vashon. At 10 years old, she took on the guitar and, five years later, began writing music. She loves taking a vision for a song or cover and making it a reality. Her style primarily falls within the genres of folk, rock and soul. She has drawn a lot of inspiration from artists John Mayer, Oasis, Alanis Morissette and the many folk artists from the 1960s and 70s.

Ruby Seago 2:10 p.m.-2:30 p.m. Ruby Ted Seago is a 17-year-old artist making her way in the world. She performed at the most recent Sharing the Stage with Eva Cyra and is now performing with Maijah Sanson Frey on the youth stage.

Petrichor 3:15 p.m.-3:35 p.m. Petrichor is a band of teens from Vashon Island High School that plays covers of songs from their favorite alternative and indie bands. Made up of singer and guitarist Iris Sackman, bassist and singer Dimitrius Brown and percussionist Josephine Slade, Petrichor is the smell of the earth after the rain.

Annika brings years of experience performing on stage in open mics and with The Vashon Island Youth Chorus in performances such as “Bye Bye Birdie” and “Annie.” Annika & Rex chops up a tasty mix of tunes highlighting Annika’s ability to bring her passion for music to life. With a strong voice and pop-sensibility, the band is a not-to-miss festival gem.
